For thousands of years people have been dreaming of travelling in space. It was only in April 1961 that you Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, became the first man to orbit the Earth in space. A few years later, in July 1969, an American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, became the first person to set foot on the moon. In space there is no air to breath so astronauts must take air with them in this space craft. When they have their space craft, they must put on a spacesuit. This supplies them with air and keeps their bodies at the right temperature.

SUMMARY OF THE POEMS

(4 MARKS)

Grandma Climbs a tree 

Calls grandma as genius.

Grandma climbing trees.

She was 62 years old

It was disgraceful.

One day she fell-down from the tree.

Doctor advised her one week bed rest.

It was like hell for her.

She asked her son to build a house on the tree.

Her son fulfilled her wish.

Quality of Mercy 

Mercy is compared to the gentle rain from heaven.

It blesses both : giver and the taker (twice blessed)

It is powerful than the king’s scepter.

Mercy is divine

King is equal to God if mercy is seated in his heart. I am the land

Land/earth is the speaker

She says ‘I wait’ which shows her patience.

People buy, plough, grow trees, fruits and grass and say it belongs to them.

They put fences, soldiers fight with guns which chokes the land.

But the land bears all these and says “You Cannot Put Fence Around Planet Earth”.

Laugh and be Merry 

Poet advices us to fill our life with laughter to make the life better.

We should face challenges with a smile.

Life is short – so be happy.

God has created the earth, heaven, sky stars which are the symbols of joy.

Life is an inn where we have to stay for a short time.

Be happy till the music stops. 32

Jazz Poem Two 

Jazz player is a poor old black man.

His face is unshaven and wrinkled.

He wears a faded blue shirt, loose neck tie, old jacket and worn out shoes.

Saxophone across his chest is supported by a wire coat hanger.

Through his music he spreads the gospel of God.

Once he starts playing music, he is no longer a poor old black man but a bird which flies high, high and higher.

Ballad of Tempest 

One night a ship was caught in a winter storm.

Crew crowded in a cabin and prayed.

Everybody had lost hope.

Captain’s little daughter held his hand and asked if God protected them on the land will he not protect them on the ocean.

Sailors were filled with hope.

The Blind Boy 

The Blind boy is the speaker.

He cannot see day and night.

He can only feel the warmth of the sun.

To him, when he sleeps it is night, when awake day.

People pity him.

But he is happy with what he has.

Off to the Outer Space Tomorrow Morning 

The poet is leaving to space the next day.

There would be no night or day or any change of season – so Calendars and clocks are useless.

Nobody will visit him or write to him.

He would be like a prisoner in space.

He is not sure of returning to earth.
