Empty lineup shots with tranquil blue water and lush green backdrops never get old. Be it shot from the land or in the water. Photo: Brian Scott / nicasurfshots
A pleasant, ambling drive south down the Nicaragua Riviera coastline will eventually land you at the Hacienda Iguana
Beach and Golf Resort. Home to the world-class wave of Playa Colorado, the community is nestled within a private resort golf and surf community. And the wave? It just so happens to be one of the best beachbreaks in all of Nicaragua. Sandbars form up and down the beach, treating the diligent surfer to a new opportunity seemingly every time they paddle out. And if the banks aren’t groomed there’s always the deep-water reef known as Panga Drops within walking distance of the resort.
24 Surfnica Magazine & Travel out
Panga Drops is a swell sucker, pulling in and magnifying and bit of surf that may be passing through the Pacific. Over the years Playa Colorado has evolved into Nicaragua’s signature destination. Between the months of March and November it blossoms into a series of world-class A-frames. With hollow consistent waves and 300 days a year of straight offshore winds, it’s hard to go wrong. Depending on swell direction, interval and luck it’s quite possible to bag the best barrel of your life.

ROQUE CALDERÓN by César Medina
E merging from the first generation of Nicaraguan surfers,
Roque Calderon stands out as one of the country’s most prominent watermen. Born in 1985, he was introduced to surfing when he was 12 by his brother Sergio, a salesman at the first shop in San Juan del Sur, Action Surf Shop. “A typical day was working at Action Surf Shop as a tour guide, and that’s how I learned English and contacted sponsors,” said Roque in a recent conversation. Spending years surfing and competing in Nicaragua and Central America, he clawed his way to three National Open Championships and finished rated sixth in the Central American Surfing Championship 2006. By 2009 he realized his dream: surfing Pipeline. Shortly after that first experience in the islands he moved to Maui with his now wife, Carmen Calderon.“I have lived here longer than three years.
28 Surfnica Magazine & Travel out
I love Hawaii, it’s like a Caribbean/Latin-American mix; the ocean water is very clean and waves are amazing, it gets that big that new spots would break,” he smiles. But it’s not all being about surfing. Roque recently finished his degree in Culinary Arts at the University of Hawaii. After two years of studying he’s now got himself a good gig as a managing chef at the Grand Wailea, Maui. “I could have never made it without Carmen’s support, I am very thankful with her,” said Roque. “I would like to own my own business and continue surfing as long as possible.”“My message for the keikis is to learn and respect the big blue, that’s the only way you’ll get something in return, also take notes from good and bad surfers, there’s always something to learn from them,” notes Roque. Roque Calderon is currently sponsored by: 8eighty and Kazuma Surfboards
