THE BISHOP
from Surftech Surf 2024
by Surftech
As a part of the 3 model/ Assassin Series, The Bishop was developed as an enhanced daily driver and has been in deep refinement with Team rider Joel Bishop since he came on board in 2017. After all the variations, we landed on what we comfortably describe as an average to pro level “Quiver Killer”. Since its release, This model was chosen by Tully Wiley in his debut in the 2022 Bells CT WSL contest. The Bishop model consists of a competition rocker/ pulled in nose outline and rolled bottom for automatic speed on the take off, with the wide point moved back a half ½” for a solid back footed sensation that correlates well with the round tail for critical bottom turns and tight snaps in the pocket and heavy arcing rail turns. For performance, we added a generous single under the front foot, flowing it into a deep single with double and moderate Vee out of the tail. The deep single with double adds lift and separation of the water between the fins making it loose and responsive, while the vee makes for easy tipping for proper rail surfing. Rails have a slight downturn / lower apex for immediate wave connection and sensitivity , but are kept a little fuller for stability in various conditions. To complement the pulled back wide point, the forward fins are also set back a ½” from a standard set up to make those tight radius turns easier while holding your rail speed. What started out mainly as an all around competition board, became a freestyle blade for the everyday warrior.
One board that combines the best of both EPS and PU surfboards. While the EPS is lively the PU inserts dampen vibration better. The result is pop out of turns and stability while on rail. With Dual Core construction you will never have to sacrifice again.

DARK TWINN TWIN + TRAILER SETUP / ST SQUASH TAIL
Drawing design influence from Ben Aipa’s /Dane Kealoha wing twin from the mid-late 70’s and Swing thruster of the 90’s, the Dark Twinn is the next step in the evolution of Alternative Performance Shortboard design, developed to be a dominant performance-groveler hybrid. The Dark Twinn’s sleek / active outline, winged thumb tail rear section, moderate rocker, full-lower apex rail, and staged bottom contour create a lively yet controlled planning surface, while the combination of wing to fin placement, wing flute and heavy vee with double concave out the tail creates an intuitive tipping point for your backfoot to transfer rail to rail effortlessly with minimal pressure for tight in the pocket reactions or long drawn out carves. These design elements and Twin+trailer fin set up translate seamlessly for surfers at intermediate to professional level. Noted as feeling “like a free feeling thruster”, the Dark Twinn gives surfers the ability to tap into a more fluid and dynamic side of high performance surfing.

Wrecking Ball
5-FIN OPTION / MULTI PRONGED EXPERIMENTAL TAIL
Taking hints from an experimental board made in 1977 made by Ben Aipa, The Wrecking Ball is the High Performance / Super Groveler that fills the void between Fish and HP Shortboards that brings together all the design qualities needed to pack a ton of action into a small board. The squatty broad outline in the front half of the board gives it paddle/planing dominance while the inclusion of the unmistakable Aipa STING (wing) abruptly breaks the outline to bring in a pulled in performance hip curve that meets a full tail section with a double pronged bat tail that feels like a combo of swallow and squash tails for lift and bite allowing the board to be highly responsive for tight radius turns without sacrificing drive. Updated with high-performance bottom contours, the Wrecking Balls main feature is the hydroplane speed boat inspired “Bevel Rails”. This 45 degree split rail design element provides increased lift, rail to rail reduced surface area for heightened performance, and positive rail control for carves. When the rest of the crowd is struggling on their standard shortboards, the Wrecking Ball will give you the power to drive down the line with unparalleled speed and bash through sections without remorse (with a devilish grin on your face..)

BIG BOY STING 4 + 1 FIN SETUP / SWALLOW TAIL
A favored model for the 210 pounds plus surfer, the Big Boy Sting is designed for the big boys and girls who want to maximize power without giving up maneuverability. Proven to perform by Ben Aipa on the south shore on Oahu, The Big Boy Sting was designed by Ben in the late ‘90s and underwent heavy testing through the ‘2000s. After minor refinements and 100’s of boards built, the Big Boy Sting is now considered the most iconic Aipa design. Thickness where it counts and tapered rails combined with a pulled-in nose and tail allow the Big Boy Sting to turn tight and fast in the pocket. The Big Boy Sting is no puffed-up old guy board; instead, it is a high-performance power surfer’s precision weapon with extra bulk added only where it is needed. We’ve added a swallow tail for extra control when stomping on the tail through powerful sections and decreased drag when driving off the bottom. To ensure the board works in multiple conditions, we’ve included a 4+1 fin setup. Riders can go with a quad fin setup when they need to skate across flat sections or a 2 + 1 when they need extra control in powerful waves. For the first time, the Big Boy Sting is now available in Surftech’s Fusion HD construction. A lightweight, durable epoxy build that adds extra liveliness to an already energetic design.
