PASSION
W
e are only great when we act with great passion. Especially when it can overcome a very wet monsoon season. These past few months have demanded a passion from all of us. A passion for waves, a passion for the environment, a passion for each other. Only a few windows of opportunity presented themselves. You had to be on or miss it. You could see it in the surfing, led by a re-energized Garut Widarta, who has been surfing better than he ever has. Surftime sat with him recently and asked what it was that had fueled his new passion. He replied simply, “Fatherhood”. We are also proud to feature on our cover the great Made Winada Adi Putra. Although on the verge of being a tribal elder in his mid-thirties, he is still making cover worthy moves with no signs of slowing down. The kids are actually having a hard time keeping up. You will see it all in our lead feature called “Monsoon Dreams”. Veterans and rookies alike, ripping our waves apart with passion. Because passion is the oxygen of the soul. In another feature we have local Ben Benson going head to head with Jordy Smith at Keramas. With Ben chasing his passion as if it were the last bus out of town. Doing his best to match Jordy air for air. Representing the young talent pool of Bali with his own firepower. Proving that one person with passion is worth more than an army without. And from the other side of the world we witness a passion unimaginable. Trevor Murphy has presented us a snowbound portfolio from New England in the United States. Hoary images of a frigid surfing experience that would take more than passion to challenge. It would take a nuclear explosion of desire. And yes, those Jersey boys have got it in spades. And for another aspect of passion, we look within. Within the passionate art and photography of Gene Kreyd. Combining atmospheric drone work with spaced-out interpretations of landscapes, humans and waves, he gives us enough pause to think of the grandeur within ourselves. Within our own feelings. Sparking flights of imagination and perspective that perhaps the Gods themselves intended. Fully grounded, we move on next to Texas, where photographer Jimmy Metyko meditates on what it is really like to be poolside at our current chlorinated revolution. And finally, Ryan Robson explains his love/love relationship between Western Australia and Indonesia. And that is what the contents of this issue is all about. The passion to make great things happen. To feel great things. To do great things. Because passionate souls burn with a fire that very few can handle. And yet none can resist. - Editor -
Photography by Gene Kreyd COVER: Made Winada Adi Putra was a standout during the Monsoon sessions. As difficult as he can be in person, he is still a marvel to watch when he actually feels like pouring it on. Still as nimble as surfers a third his age, always a Rip Curl Cup threat, Adi Putra is on his way to being one of Indonesia’s forever surfers. Like Kelly Slater, ripping world class at 47, Adi Putra is showing no signs of age at all. Good news for all those groms out there who plan on surfing forever. Adi Putra is proof that it’s possible. THE LAWN: DOING THE RIGHT THING
A
s part of the local community in Canggu and to show our appreciation for our Bali backyard, the Lawn Canggu has teamed up with Eco Bali recycling to participate in a beach clean up every Sunday morning at 8am between Batu Bolong and Echo Beach. Eco Bali is a recycling company focusing on waste management. The Lawn venue partners with them on a daily basis and now, proudly, for our weekly beach clean ups. Because we all want to move toward more responsible waste management systems. It’s easier than you thnik. Since December 2018, each Sunday, The Lawn Canggu team gathers with the community to walk along the beach, picking up what simply doesn’t belong on our beloved beaches. Plastic and other materials are washed down Indonesia’s rivers and up onto our shores every day. We feel it is our responsibility to make sure our wonderful beaches are clean and shared with joy. We want to raise awareness in both our up river and coastal communities to meet our goal of keeping our island beautiful. The Lawn Canggu would like to invite one and all to join us on the beach, to take action, and to believe that together, we can make the future happen.

Spread: As if from a time machine, Garut Widiarta is back to the future. Surfing with more zest than the most stoked groms. Here bringing his Halfway beach boogie to the more open faces of Canggu. Right: Made Joi, defining the new state of Indonesian aerials and loving the flight time.
Bronson Meidy during his “Orange session. Dominating the action with rotation after rotation on a board that seemed to go anywhere he wanted. One can only hope the dimensions are stored in some computer somewhere.

arut Widiarta sits at the front bar of his cousins new restaurant with the gold of the sun burnishing his already brown skin. Garut is a little darker these days now that he has grooved into fatherhood and prioritized more time in the surf. You can finally see a little age on him. At the crinkles next to his eyes and the deeper dimple when he smiles that gleaming smile. I sat with him talking about marriage and kids and low tide Padang Padang. It’s no secret that a very lean and hungry Garut has been ripping with a new vigor. He knows he has another Rip Curl Cup in him. Just like his cousin Made Winada Adi Putra. Or his other cousin who certainly should have one, Raditya Rondi. It’s Raditya’s new place that we are sitting in. Right smack dab next to the Goku Resto,
the official clubhouse of the Halfway Boardrider’s club. This family of male surfers stays close to each other. Whether it’s side by side resto’s or side by side in Rip Curl Cup low tide finals. They are princes and they know it. On there way to be Kings. Adi Putra is practically there. You can see in Garut’s eyes a new maturity regarding all this. And over our cold, afternoon beers, I ask him a simple question about surfing the monsoon season. He actually laughs and takes a sip and says “C’mon, it’s the best time, it’s always the best time in Bali”. And I sit and let that settle. Despite the winds and the garbage season you can still ride perfect surf on this island 365 days a year. “You just gotta go find it” Garut says. Truth there, I think. Especially after witnessing one of the more energetic monsoon seasons this island has ever seen. Seems all the veterans were guiding all the groms.
straight through the rains and brown waters and over to the beachbreaks and over the eastside reefs until just about every last new discovery on the island was covered in zeal. And that wild energy came from somewhere.
Left: The perennial Rahtu Suargita has been experimenting with shorter boards . Sacrificing power for the pure joy of super maneuverable machines. Says Rahtu, “It’s like taking a skateboard out there!”. Right: Giada Legati has been flying the equal rights flag with equal performances at her beloved Canggu sandbars. Her fitness being a strong advantage, a ferocious paddler, her wave count is as high any man’s.
Mega Artana demonstrates the importance of converting speed to flotation resistance to pressure release. Happy Landings.
The sessions were surging with youngsters like Varun Tandjung stepping up and old lions like Rizal howling into barrels like a teenager. I asked Garut where all that new energy came from. “The kids, man. Can’t you see it? Bali is going to be theirs”. Another truth. Bali is indeed ready for its inheritors. The old guard, still holding down the fort, are running out of things to teach the kids. And what a great job they have done with what they have had. This next generation, aside from being nimble surfers, have an almost dignified air about them. As if they feel the weight of what they are about to be given. The pride and the beauty of Balinese surfing. Despite the horrors and the blessings of tourism that have been heaped upon them. Although it is hard to think of who is going to take Adi Putra’s Matador place in the Padang
Padang line-up, it’s a little easier to see who will move into Garut’s more electric spot. And the best thing about sitting on Jalan Benesari with Garut is that you can see that he is not worried about it. That he and his generation have very little to worry about at all. With the help and influence of the guys at Rip Curl and badasses like Nick Chong and all the guys at all the label headquarters, Garut and his like have not taken the gold, but rather have absorbed it. Smart enough to know a miracle when they see one. Surfing as a lifestyle in Bali is the best in the world, and they know it. Family, culture, money, faith and absolutely perfect, warm, offshore surf. Raditya pulls up and bounds into his resto with that puppy energy of his. A quick laugh with us and he’s off. One of Garut’s friends shows up on his cool fixed gear. More laughs.
Another beer. The sun cuts down below the buildings and the lights of the street start to wink on. A surfing life in balance seems to live on this street. I say my goodbyes and hop on my bike for home. Knowing that a thousand surfboards will be sliding over the waters at dawn. Surfboards like Garut, like mine, like all of ours. Surfboards that are such a huge part of Bali. Surfboards that provide the real footholds we have on ourselves and the island we love.
Nyoman Satria used the monsoon season to fine tune his backside tube stance. The Rip Curl Cup Trials are always on this guy’s mind.
Despite his mad caperings in the sandy barrels of the eastside, during the Canggu sessions, Made Joi let everyone know he has not forgot his face work. In the land of lefts, a great backside off the lip is a must in the quiver of any Balinese regular foot.

I
t is the known duty of any local to face and defend local pride when a visiting hotshot paddles out into their line-up. And on this day that duty fell onto the shoulders of Ben Benson. And in this case the visiting hotshot was Jordy Smith. And the spot was our very own Keramas. A surf spot that lists under the weight of international recognition. As if the Corona Bali Pro is not enough, clearing the line-up on the best days of the year for the WSL pansies, these days this once bucolic reef is now a target for absolutely every visiting hot surfer on earth. Still, feelings are mixed when a giant surf star paddles out into your break. A combination of respect, pride, jealousy and rivalry. Respect in that the hotshot is just such a red hot surfer. Pride in that he has deemed your spot, your world, worthy of his world class abilities. And jealousy because the guy has had it so damn easy. Jordy Smith has been groomed, delivered to the best surf in the world, he’s f*cking rich, and all he has to do is show up and surf perfect waves, usually empty perfect waves, usually with only one other guy out, at the most perfect surf spots in the most perfect countries in the Universe.
The particular swell direction on this particular day was tailor made for anyone working on the height of their aerials. Jordy Smith showed up out of nowhere on his way to who-knows-where and for a few hours proceeded to set new records. Vaulting into the void like a suicide jumper who wanted to live.
26
SURFTIME
Not to be outdone, Ben Benson, prideful in his Indonesian roots, didn’t surrender Keramas without a fight. He stepped up, going air for air with Jordy at the perfect end wave ramp. In the end, Jordy’s masterful display became more inspiration and less intimidation.
Design wise it’s odd that boards built exclusively for aerials, other than Christian Fletcher’s space machines, do not exist. Are we holding back aerial performance with the desire to have a board that does it all? Once again we should turn to skateboarding for design and performance concepts. Ben Benson, with a very un-standard move on very standard equipment.
And rivalry because, goddammit, this is YOUR spot. How dare he show everybody up, making us feel inadequate, like children to his man. And all the smiles and “hey bru’s” and handshakes and autographs on the beach ain’t never gonna change that. So what is the local to do? Just like a boxer who knows his opponent is superior, you get in the ring anyway and start swinging. Until you are down on your knees, sure, but swinging. Marvin Hagler, 12 time World Middleweight boxing champion famously said of his rare losses “I never lost a fight in my life…I didn’t stop those fights, someone else did”. And so Ben Benson figured he had to step into the ring against a far superior opponent. An opponent with years of experience on him. A grown, large man. A WSL Champion. A guy that can do backflips. No matter, Ben poured it on, determined not to be cute. Pressing the guy for waves, just enough not to be an asshole, but plenty enough to let him know we don’t lay down here like they do in California. And so the uneasy session progressed. Ben completing the best airs of his life and Jordy Smith, feeling the annoyance, putting a little extra ooomph and style into his airs. At one point even flooring it like an F1 driver and boosting into ankle breaking heights. At the end of the session, on his way up the beach to the parking lot, Jordy nodded at Ben. And Ben nodded back. But Ben did not smile. Ben knew he had been wildly outclassed. And so about the only thing Ben had left was his smile. And he wasn’t going to give the guy everything. No. Ben held on to that.
Discipline is never a bad idea. A strict diet and very creative workout routines have morphed Jordy’s 6’2’ frame into a very lean, strong and flexible 80 kilos. The result of which is an adaptable body in any ocean in the world. Any ambitious Indonesian should take note of this. We have the talent on our shores, but desire lacks. If someday someone is going to step up to represent us on the international stage, than we are going to have to realize that the sun does not rise and set on Canggu lefts.
Jordy Smith, rattling off whiplashes like this the way a skater would board slide the bowl. Consistency does not mean boring if you do it right. And remember to always keep the fun alive. It’s the way of our tribe.

Left: Deep Freeze slushy shorebreak. A rare phenomenon. What on earth drives men to surf in these conditions? Do our desires burn that hot? Right: Sam Hammer, dealing with hell and high water.
N
othing burns like the cold. But in the right hands, she’ll melt. That’s the thing about matching a desire to surf against an unimaginable foe. The cold. A cold so deep and so thorough that death lies right on the surface of your skin. There is no other time then when the whole world seems composed of one thing and one thing only. Cold, cold cold. Snow doesn’t give a goddamn whom it touches. When snow falls, nature listens. And if you want to surf in agonizing conditions, inhuman conditions, you better too. Funny how snow makes even the dirtiest place look clean. How you can taste the sky, touch the air around you. Snow, like grains of sand, beaches of it…but deadly, deadly cold. So damn cold even angels are
grounded. So cold it makes you want to get married. Let’s face it, our favorite thing about cold is when it’s over. But still, desire, like the primal ardor for a mate, drives some surfers into a kind of hell on earth. Not a hell of fire but of ice. Numbness. Into a madness. Entering a world with a body that is begging you not to. Because chasing a surfing dream takes you over the edge. Like the temptation of Christ, there is brother devil, offering you paradise, but at a price. You stand there looking out at empty, perfect, offshore barrelling tubes. Yours for the taking. But oh, that price to pay. Bitch cold. Witch cold. Skull cracking bastard cold. Your blood hates you for it. The work your heart is going to have to do.
These are the moments that make you forget your woes and make you just step on the pedal. A good wetsuit here is more important than a good board. Water so cold that even your surfboard won’t flex. With a wipe-out here having bone chilling, session ending consequences, Sam Hammer is as focused as you can be.
There is a great power and glory and beauty to a frozen world. But most men admire it from a position of wary warmth. But surfers actually dive deep into it, finding thrilling hollows within it, allowing it to encircle them, threaten them, change them. It is a rare surrender and takes a man’s great strength. Sam hammer, riding as deep as he can get, making love to a swirling block of ice.
To go fight a battle against time that is impossible to win. You can only charge the enemy lines, become a casualty and retreat before your fire within bleeds out. Still, that temptation is grinding. You realize you don’t have a choice. It’s only cold for those who stand still. So you call on your own packed heat. You suit up in blankets of neoprene. You tramp and crunch through the snow. And you wade into what isn’t water any sane surfer would want. The monster isn’t under the bed anymore, it’s screaming inside your head with your first duck dive. Your hands are assaulted. Your face withdraws and contracts. Your eyeballs could freeze solid. You are in danger. Your own mother wouldn’t recognize you. The fuse is lit. It’s only a matter of time before have to shut it all down. Or the
ocean will do it for you. And yet you go on. You go out and go through the same motions you would on the equator. Paddling, takeoffs, turns, tubes. Until the horniness passes. And you return to shore with the hell beat out of you. With the love beat out of you. And you struggle out of one miraculous outfit and into another that returns you to the world of warmth. And your body loves you again. And you look back at the surf. And like sex, you cannot remember the orgasmic moments, because they have been left behind. But, like all madmen, you know you’re gonna want it again someday. Someday soon. And you will shake your fist at the hellish cold to go get it. To go retrieve those moments now frozen in time.
Left: A perfect moment of anticipation. But that is no pleasant offshore breeze. It is a wind chill well below freezing combing a wave that is cold enough to crack your skull. Sam Hammer, taking whatever perfection he can get. Knowing that if you wait until things are perfectly ready, you’ll imperfectly wait for the rest of your life. Right: No need to wonder why no one is out. The cold here can kill you.
Merry Christmas.

here is no horizon, you don’t see waves coming from the distance. On deck, you here the hydraulic wave generator cranking up and feel the vibration some 15 seconds before each wave magically appears from the wall. I always try to shoot from where you see more of the beach than the wall. But I don’t hide the wall. The wall is a big part of the culture. This is all about surfing, too much wall and there is a viewer disconnect. No wall at all and it’s a lie. My favorite images are the ones that

show all the perfectly aligned beach chairs in the background. It feels like you are in some private cove in the Caribbean. Hard to believe we now have a subculture that can only be found in wave pools. It will never replace surfing in the ocean any more than a pool party will replace a day at the beach. But in the future, maybe millions will never know the difference. Look, it’s a foam pit, same as a gymnast practices in, and that makes it valid.

Jackson Dorian, Son.
The deck over the wave generators had a frenzy atmosphere as each surfer timed their jump to ride a wave. Mason Ho and Cheyne Magnusson and Dion Agius made it really fun. They all know how to optimize a media situation. Mason didn’t land the superman, but the flight time was insane. Nathan Fletcher
wasn’t as loose as the younger guys, but he still had the height. Some paddled out from the “beach”, but most just jumped. And how each surfer jumped said a lot about their personality. Big round bladed fans were installed in case it blew out. They were never needed. Shane Dorian and son Jackson went
toe to toe. Jackson had a cast on and would not get out of the pool. Ever. Guys like Shane and Albee Layer seemed out of place considering the ungodly waves they have stared down. Hendrix Frankenreiter had the tube wired. It was weird being at a pool party and watching some kid do a back flip without

a diving board. You want the first wave after the pool has been shut down for about 20 minutes. So glassy. Crazy seeing surfers adapting to an artificial environment. They made it look natural. Eli Hanneman, at 15, was the youngest real competitor. Here he was, nowhere
near drinking age, plopped down in rural Texas with a bunch of Australian pranksters. Eli just went about his chill self as all the mayhem circled around him. And then when he went into the water, he was easily one of the best. This guy will be big. Complete package. Of course Mason was the funnest guy
there, putting out the most energy, and mentoring fellow Hawaiian Eli Hanneman. But that is what these wave pools take. It may look easy, but it’s not. This kind of surfing demands energy from every aspect. The Pool, the surfers, the media‌the electricity of it all can literally be smelled in the air.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA: It’s 6am. I’m dressed for Antarctica and I’m still cold. The wind is piercing. 10ft of raw Indian Ocean swell is unloading before me. A washed up whale carcass rolling in the shorebreak. Sharks around. Submarine sharks. My wetsuit is dusted in frost. I wonder why I’m not back in Indonesia, the place where this same swell will detonate in a couple days, signaling the end of it’s Indian Ocean crossing. I wipe the thought clean and get out there. INDONESIA: So many years ago I had picked up a camera. A passion ignited. I struck north toward the legends. I found Indonesia. I was in love. There’s a pioneering feeling about being at sea. From the unchartered waters of the Maluku Islands, to the mystical right hander’s in Northern Sumatra, we covered a lot of miles…at her mercy. Vessels were lost, shipwrecked fishermen rescued, greeneyed villagers ambushed the boat. Sleepless nights. Guided not by the stars but the ocean they shone upon. The fulfillment of discovery became addictive. All sides of her beauty competed for the honors.
Imagine the archives that some traveling photographers have of our current heroes as kids. Photos that would never see the light of day within today’s social media appetites. There must be thousands like this one of a young Tommy Sobry gettin’ it on at his beloved Bingin. Although many photographers like Ryan Robson have our home tattooed on their hearts, Indonesia’s not for ever visitor on a permanent basis. Maybe it’s this transitory experience that allows photography that looks more like memories than reality.
There is one thing that Western Australia and Indonesian clearly share. And that is the raw power of the planet in its most pure forms. What violent playgrounds we love.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA: The dark abyss. Shifty charcoal shadows lurking beneath every time you paddle out. You’ve got to be able to deal with the wind. There’s so much wind. It’s a constant search for shelter. Trying to find a corner away from the southerlies. Surfing’s not easy here. You need to be able to look at the trees, the clouds, the way the sun rose that morning. Your heart beats faster. It’s always time to find them. To find her. INDONESIA: A wild love affair. And I drank deeply from that love. But, like any sultry affair, I knew it wouldn’t last. The time came to go home. WESTERN AUSTRALIA: The Wild West, like a high school flame, was once again calling me by name and I was quick to answer. I ate the misty mornings. Wind so cold it blows your ear drums shut. I wanted to surf in a wetsuit again. Feel the camaraderie of the hardship that cold water brings. Indonesia had desensitized me. Spellbound me. A perceptually nude woman with flowing hair and flowing warm waves. She had shown me so much sensuality that my creativity was diminishing. My old lover called, and I ran. Western Australia is a cold bed of Lava. It requires planning and cleverness. Just like any love worth feeling. The variety of thoughts here is second to none and patience is a virtue. So is solid ground. And home made love.

Without question, the most under appreciated talent in surfing’s history, Flynn Novak’s repertoire includes giant waves, the first full rotation backflips (Does anyone remember the “Flynnstone flip?”) monstrous airs and an uncanny ability to find offbeat surf spots on their best days ever. Here on a day when most were running for Outside Corner, Flynn finds his own private canvas on a banner day near Jimbaran.
What in the hell are we doing in places like this. Among the forces that shape our continents. Why were we on the moon? Why have we reached the summit of Mt Everest and dove to the depths of the Marianas trench? Why do we humans do this? Science? Knowledge? Money? Maybe. But guys like Francisco Porcella will tell you another simple reason. This kind of thing get’s you laid.

It is thought. Organic. Crystalline. Interpretive. Loving. Do birds think in three dimensions? Up, down, sideways? Without help we can only go sideways. Humans cannot go up or down. Only in thought. over canvases and in caves for eternity? To open not a door but a hole, a void, in order to fill it with thought. Thought, that King of all existence. Too find that quiet thought. That profound silence and aloneness. To not look but to see. Are our cave paintings and our photography since the beginning nothing more than art simply radiated as emotions? How far does it go? Must one create an image to feel it? Understand it? Is there a joy in loneliness?
You slip beneath the waters and all becomes muffled. You rise in the sky and land noises become subdued. Can we think in the noise? Really think? Do we think on a wave? What does a flying creature think of our thoughts as we dance on the sea?
What must they think of us? Putting so much energy into something that gains no food. No water. No thought at the time of the act. Is loneliness a condition? Or an answer? When are we ever alone?

FISHBONE LOCAL: CANGGU’S POSITIVE CHOICE I
t’s just one of those places that make you smile. It’s close enough to the surf to walk in with your hair wet, but just classy enough to be a step up from just another fried food beer bar. The whole place, from the fresh food to the gathering tables, to the open kitchen to the backyard grassy knoll, is all set up for one thing. Good vibrations. But not the hippie type like so many others in the neighborhood. Fishbone local is about lively times at both lunch and dinner for the semi-adult in all of us. Perfect for everything from post surf chow downs to lunch meetings to romantic table-for-two dining. Here is a place where fun, romance and even a little business can co-exist in a creative, healthy environment. And the food and drinks? Dashing yet affordable. Start with a smoked cinnamon crusted Mojito, hit the black vinegar lobster dumplings starter, go for the Prawn spaghetti and finish with the Deep fried snickers. It’s all sustainable. Fishbone works with the fisherman of Singaraja just to make sure. So you can lunch and dinner guilt free. Make the place a habit, bring your visiting friends, and make sure to get Bella, the manager, to drop by the table. She can make anybody feel at home. Fishbone is a winner that Surftime highly recommends. Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, No.99, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80361

LOOKING BACK LIVING THE DREAM

ike reggae music, pornography too can adapt to any tune. And surfing, being a naked sport, is such an easy target. Considering all the bikini’s and rippling muscles, maybe our sport was born to be porn. Either way, it’s always an exercise in embarrassment when private sexual fantasies about the Sport of Kings find the glaring light of public display. Although the writers of these fine literary tomes must have been belly laughing through the whole process. Obviously, we should too. Steamy, seamy, sweet salty dreams everyone.
