Guy’s early art portrayed the

Widely recognized today as the world’s finest marine wildlife artist, Guy Harvey combines his unique artistic talents with Hemingway classic his background as a marine biologist, diver, photographer and angler, to create marine wildlife art with an unmatched “The Old Man authenticity and visual appeal. Self-taught, Guy’s artistic roots can be traced back to his childhood on the Caribbean And The Sea. isle of Jamaica, where he spent many hours fishing and diving with his father. Guy’s obsession with the creatures of the sea inspired his early drawings. While attending a boarding school in England at an early age, Guy became entranced by Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” — and began developing a series of sketches that years later would prove instrumental in helping launch his career as an artist. Though Guy was interested in pursuing his love of marine art, he opted for scientific training and worked hard in pursuit of an education. Having graduated with honors in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977, Guy returned home to Jamaica to resume his education, earning his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in 1984. Along the way, Guy was able to supplement his income by selling his art, which led to his first exhibition in 1985 — a one-man art show at a Kingston gallery of his 44 pen-and-ink drawings inspired by “The Old Man and the Sea.” The success of the exhibition encouraged Guy to spend more time painting, and by 1986 his work had spread to Florida through a series of showings at boat shows and fishing tournaments. By 1988, Guy Harvey had become identified as one of the world’s top saltwater gamefish artists, and was experiencing so much success that he gave up his career in marine biology to pursue his hobby full-time. Guy is known best for his dynamic gamefish T-Shirt designs. His original paintings have sold for tens of thousands of dollars, and today, reproductions of his art — often seen on magazine and catalog covers — are offered as limited edition prints, and can be found on a wide variety of clothing and gift items. Guy maintains his art studio in Grand Cayman, where he lives with wife Gillian and their two children, Jessica and Alex. Though he gave up a budding career as a marine biologist for that of a highly acclaimed artist, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea, traveling the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints. Along the way, he became an ardent conservationist (see the back cover), supporting “catch-and-release” fishing ethics, collaborating with Nova Southeastern University in Dania Beach, FL, to form the Guy Harvey Research Institute, and working with many organizations to help manage and protect fishery resources around the world. Most recently, he helped establish the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation to fund scientific research and innovative marine conservation educational programs.

An avid fisherman since childhood, Guy is a much traveled and accomplished angler who has caught all nine of the world’s billfish species, including the catch-and-release of two “grander” (1,000 pounds-plus) blue marlin in a single day. Formerly Jamaica’s International Gamefish Association (IGFA) representative, Guy has been a member of the IGFA Board of Trustees since 1993. Guy is also an avid scuba diver, and over the years, has become a skilled underwater photographer and cinematographer, even pioneering the techniques used to photograph and film free swimming billfish. In addition, those talents have allowed him to share his observations through the production of educational documentaries. Guy also operates a large art gallery and gift shop on Grand Cayman Island. 3

Each of the last five years, Guy Harvey used his versatile artistic talents to create custom T-Shirt designs that helped celebrate the success of the NCAA national football championships. All five shirts have proven to be hugely successful, and Guy Harvey fans from many other colleges, students and alumni alike, began requesting custom T-Shirt designs featuring their alma maters. Continually expanding this Guy Harvey T-Shirt line has been our response to those many requests. A P a r t n e r s h i p C o m m i t t e d To Protecting Our Oceans For F u t u r e G e n e r a t i o n s To E n j o y When it comes to their passion for the sea, a partnership in a sportswear business is only part of what AFTCO and Dr. Guy Harvey, the marine biologist turned artist, have in common. Both have forged a legacy of marine resource involvement, and today, both command the highest level of respect for their continuing ocean conservation efforts stemming from a mutual concern for, and love of the sea. The marine conservation ethic of the American Fishing Tackle Company (AFTCO), one of the world’s most highly regarded saltwater fishing tackle manufacturers — evolved through former company Chairman Milt Shedd’s long time involvement in ocean resource projects. Milt, the founding Board Chairman of Sea World, Inc., passed in 2002, but his marine stewardship tradition is carried on by the staff at AFTCO. Son Bill, company President and CEO, contributes well over 500 hours a year providing leadership for ocean resource conservation efforts. Dr. Guy Harvey, a long-time advocate of “catch-and-release” fishing, has also worked closely with many marine conservation organizations, raising over $500,000 a year for related programs, including the Guy Harvey Research Institute. In recognition of his many contributions, Guy has been inducted into both the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Fishing Hall Of Fame, and the International Swimming Hall Of Fame. In recent years, Guy has been producing documentaries and a TV series to help educate others about today’s important marine conservation concerns. Milt Shedd gets a greeting from Shamu at Sea World, where Milt was the Board Chairman for the park’s first 20 years.

Carlsbad Hatchery Milt and Peggie Shedd founded the Hubbs/SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) in 1963. Milt started the now world renown HSWRI white seabass hatchery program in the late 1970’s. Bill Shedd later envisioned, organized and implemented a concept for a series of “grow out” facilities where sportfishermen yearly donate 20,000 hours of volunteer time to raise fish in their home harbors for release back into the wild.

AFTCO contributes over $200,000 yearly from Guy Harvey sportswear sales to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

The Guy Harvey OCEAN Foundation The GHOF funds innovative scientific research and educational programs aimed at conserving the marine environment. It is the goal of the GHOF to help ensure that future generations enjoy and benefit from a naturally balanced ocean ecosystem where fish and other marine wildlife flourish.

Tag & Release Starting with Milt Shedd in the early 1960’s, AFTCO and the Shedd family have been involved with tag and release in a big way. During a 20-year run from 1986 to 2006, the AFTCO TAG/FLAG Tournament encouraged an increased interest in tagging. Today, AFTCO continues to fund the purchase of archival and satellite tags, which have been successfully deployed in yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, swordfish, and blue marlin.

$500,000 Raised To Support Gulf Marine Life With the BP oil spill, the teams at Guy Harvey Inc. and AFTCO began to wonder what impact the spill would have on marine life in the Gulf and what we might do to help. Guy designed two custom T-shirts (shown in photo art right) and AFTCO developed a program whereby $10 per shirt would be contributed to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation by AFTCO, its sales reps and customers, and by Guy Harvey Inc.

Guy Harvey Research Institute Nova Southeastern University The GHRI provides the scientific information necessary to understand, conserve and effectively manage the world’s marine fishes and their ecosystems. In 2012, the GHRI moved to the new Center of Excellence in Coral Reef Ecosystems Science, an 86,000 square foot, state-ofthe-art research facility at the NSU Oceanographic Center.

The goal to sell 10,000 shirts and raise $100,000 was quickly surpassed with overwhelming support from Guy Harvey customers. Over 50,000 shirts and $500,000 was raised in a little over one month. Those funds were then distributed by GHOF for a wide range of marine research projects conducted by the following organizations: Florida International University, Florida Sea Grant, Florida State University, Mote Marine Lab, Nova Southeastern University, Southern Mississippi University, University of Florida, University of Southern Florida and University of Texas.
