PROGRAMME OVERVIEW: The Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) system is a world renowned framework for teaching and assessing non-technical skills in the operating room environment. This system has recently been adopted by the American College of Surgeons as their framework for assessing non-technical skills in their ACGME accredited residency programmes.

GEORGE YOUNGSON, CBE, MBChB, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCSEd George Youngson was appointed a Consultant General Surgeon in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1984 and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital in 1988. He was made CBE for services to Child Health in Scotland in June 2009. He was previously Vice President and Council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is co-convener of the colleges’ Safer Operative Surgery Course and Non Technical Skills (NOTSS) Master Classes. As past chairman of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board in Paediatric Surgery and member of Specialist Advisory Committees in General Surgery and Paediatric Surgery, his major interests are in surgical education, research into human factors related to surgical performance, and service configuration for children’s specialist care.
DOUGLAS SMINK, MD, MPH Douglas S. Smink, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and a minimally invasive general surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His clinical interests include foregut surgery, biliary tract disease, and abdominal wall hernias. At Brigham and Women’s, Dr. Smink is the program director of the general surgery residency, vice chair for education in the Department of Surgery, and the associate medical director of the Neil and Elise Wallace STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation. Dr. Smink’s research focuses on resident education and simulation. He is co-director of the Non-Technical Skills laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital which focuses on studying how to teach communication, leadership, and decision-making to surgeons and surgical teams.
