Welcome

4

I want to welcome you to RCSI’s new 2018 / 2019 prospectus for our CPD SS education and training programme. RCSI, as the national training body for surgeons, is committed to supporting surgeons at all stages of their careers and meeting their professional development and training needs. The safety and well being of patients is at the core of all our programmes. We have listened to your feedback on your professional education and training needs. We have also examined the evidence base on the provision of safe and high quality surgical care. We have also worked with the various surgical specialties to understand how RCSI can support specialty specific needs. Our new simulation training Centre on 26 York Street has given us the chance to develop a wider range of training courses across all levels of a surgeons career. This years prospectus provides over 450 fully accredited CPD credits. The range of topics cover technical and non technical skills and training. A surgeon must not only be skilled technically in operations and procedures but must also understand how they master teamwork and team building, become effective communicators with colleagues and patients, shape culture and behavior, develop coaching and teaching skills and conduct research. We have provided courses, run throughout the year, on a range of topics, delivered by experts in these areas. You can choose and plan a portfolio of education to meet your needs. You can blend technical skills, emergency skills, career planning, human factors, computer skills and research skills into a CPD plan to meet your own needs. I must also point out, that for the first time, we are providing a fully on-line education programme on Professionalism in 21st Century Medical Practice. This online programme was developed in with support from the HSE NDTP and if all modules are taken it can provide 60 CPD credits. I am very grateful for the work of the team in Surgical Affairs at RCSI in developing this prospectus. The innovation and organization of Prof Oscar Traynor, Mr Padraig Kelly and Ms Paula Mansell and their teams offers a truly high quality and relevant programme for you. I also want to acknowledge the support for this programme by the HSE NDTP unit. I hope you find the programme relevant to your needs, I look forward to meeting many of you. I welcome your feedback on the various topics and the programme as a whole. RCSI is proud to be able to support you.
