getting to know
AIMEE DEL VALLE Aimee Del Valle is a British watercolour artist living and painting in rural France. Before studying art her life was spent in the world of dance and theatre, a perfect companion to her passion for drawing and painting. “When I wasn’t dancing I was sketching people, especially dancers. My parents, both naturally artistic, encouraged me to keep exploring art.” Today, ballet remains a strong creative influence, and Aimee’s ballerina paintings are often described as dreamlike and ethereal.
What is your studio like? When do you paint? My studio is a traditional converted French basement full of brightly coloured furniture that I’ve up-cycled from second hand markets. It has a beautiful, thick tiled black and white floor and two large windows that look out onto my quaint little garden. Whichever collection I’m working on at the time is usually haphazardly pinned or stuck to the walls around me, and Bosley, my Boston Terrier, is normally on the little rug next to me watching me paint, raising his head eagerly every time I get up in the hope that something more interesting is going to happen, which I assure him, is not! I paint during the day while my eldest child is at school and my youngest is at daycare. Sometimes, when I have a painting on the go that I can’t put down, much like a good book, I end up painting in the evening after the children have gone to bed. What do you like best about living in France? The things I love best are the pretty villages and countryside that surrounds me. The weather is beautiful compared to the english climate I’m used to. This highlights the seasons incredibly; winter really is white, autumn is a far cry from the greys and browns I was used to. In France autumn is warm and bright with beautiful yellows, oranges and reds colouring the countryside. Needless to say, spring and summer are simply full of colour! With all of your interests; dance, animals etc, what do you like to paint the best? The main subjects I paint are dance, portraiture and animals. It’s hard to say which I prefer, as with so many other things, I go through phases. When it is summer and I have spent a lot of time at the beach, I find myself inspired by the people around me, especially children in their little fantasy worlds. I love to choose a special stolen moment that I’ve seen and paint it. When I’m feeling like being a bit experimental, and want to create something more adventurous in terms of techniques or colours, I find myself drawn to animals. They seem to allow me to play around a bit more. This is normally when I get a bit messy and suddenly produce eight paintings in one week!
