'Time flies!' Time's a funny old thing when you think about it. Ticking away relentlessly, it tries to order and organise even control our everyday lives, regimentedly moving through seconds to centuries, minutes to millenia. And we often just let it, falling into a daily routine of monotony. But why should we be the servant of time? After all man created time, simply as a means to making sense of the natural world around us – the change from day to night, the difference between winter and summer, the movement of the tides! After all, one hour can seem like an eternity whereas a week can fly by in a flash! Despite its desire to order our world, time is what you make it! Sit waiting for your mate to text back and let you know if the surfs any good and that hour will last forever but a week away somewhere new and that trip will fly! A year ago, we decided we'd had enough of waiting to hear back, so we took the bold step to start SURPHANG. Twelve months twelve issues later and time really has flown. We've loved every minute – we hope you have too!

SM Soli Bailey going sensationally big and pushing his aerial limits.
Billabong has been helping to bring top Australian surfers under the spotlight for many years now. From Joel Parkinson to Jack Freestone, Taj Burrow to Ryan Callinan, all have come to our attention through such classic Billabong movies as 'Trilogy' and more recently 'Blow Up!' These four surfers have practically become household names because of their ability to push surfng boundaries. And now another generation are about to follow in their footsteps, led by Billabong's latest prodigy, Soli Bailey. We caught up with him last summer to fnd out more!

SM - 10
What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I'd like to combine them both because I think free surfng is epic but comps keep you pushing your limits because its a challenge to surf against good surfers. When and where was your best surf session? At home surfng .......... on Christmas day 2011

Champ Chats Tip top Timson! Words: stu gaston & Photos: Vince Timson
For over 5 years now, one name has dominated the heat sheets of British Junior surfng. With four British titles to his name already, Harry Timson, the UK's favourite uber grom, is now making the transition into the Open division of competitive surfng and after a few events last year, he's already quite convincingly made his mark on the UK Pro Surf Tour, taking Carve's UK Aerialist of the Year award still at only 17 years old. So we caught up with him whilst on a trip to Lanzarote to start of the year, and asked him all about life at the top!
19 -
SM Harry Timson in tip top condition!
Two Thousand and Twelve was a pretty epic year for you – highest placed Under 18 Brit on the European Pro Junior tour and earning the title UK's best aerialist surfer must have been just some of the highlights. Talk us through those memorable moments frst then? 2012 was a great year for me! First of all the Euro Pro Juniors went well and it was a productive summer for training, surfng and also coverage. After the summer had fnished, the UK Pro Surf Tour events had started to become confrmed (due to lack of swell in the UK during summer they had to cancel and postpone events and dates) and I managed to fy back just in time for the frst event, the Pro Junior at my home break, Fistral. I ended up winning that event which was a bonus! Another memorable event was up in Scarbrough where I got 2nd in the Open and managed to stick an air in the fnal which lead to me being awarded the Carve UK's Aerialist of the Year!
SM - 20
The previous year you'd made it as British Under 18 Champion. Talk us through that contest? In the British Nationals you were only allowed to enter one division that year and although my category was actually Under 16, I felt like a bit of a challenge and decided to go for it in the Under 18s! The surf was big and messy but I managed to come out on top and become the Under 18 British Champion! You have to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders to win a title nowadays? How do you rate your surfng peers over in the UK at the moment? The level of British Surfng is just getting higher and higher each year. I think one of the people I really look up to is Alan Stokes. I've surfed with him quite a lot recently and watch him in a lot of his contests and he just rips! And that's in any conditions from knee high mush to 6ft bazzas!
21 -
SM Harry's high on airs!
CHAMP CHATS
SM - 22
CHAMP CHATS You've been surfng against guys like him most of your competitive life. There must be diferent levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this afect the way you surf in a heat? I think that everyone surfs diferently and that every dog can have its day! So sometimes you just have to block out the other people and just surf your heats, otherwise you can think too much about what they're doing and lose concentration on your own heat! After all nobody wants to travel the length of the country to be knocked out frst round, although it happens to everyone! So who would you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Defnitely Stoksey! You could throw him out in anything and he will come out with two big scores! God knows what's on the bottom of his boards haha
23 -
SM Harry takes tail high to the top!
SM - 24
Now you're a veteran champion, having already had four such titles in your surfng career so far, so which goes down as your best victory to date? I think actually the title I'm most proud of is the Aerialist of the Year, just because we have some big names on the UK Pro Surf Tour, even worldwide, such as Reubyn Ash! When you have people like him doing forehand rodeos, he spends more time in the air than on the wave! Being a four times champ by Twenty Twelve then, what's next? What are your goals for 2013? I would really like to do something along the lines of top 10 on the ASP European Pro Junior tour, as that is the next step up from what I've been doing now.
25 -
SM Whatever the conditions, Harry Timson's in tip top form!
CHAMP CHATS
SM - 26
CHAMP CHATS
27 -
SM It's no wonder, Harry is currently the UK's Best Aerialist Surfer!
And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng? I have been training with my family seeing as my sister is a cross country runner so I'm always out training with her and then swim training with my dad and brother, nothing too heavy! Now you spent much of last year away frst in Hawaii, then Australia and then France for most of the summer. Do you feel that opportunities to surf abroad have really brought your surfng on? Surfng abroad has improved my surfng by miles! The waves are just so diferent and have more power and better shape which makes your surfng quicker and sharper. France seems like my second home now and it's just a perfect training ground for me.
SM - 28
29 -
SM No doubt, Harry Timson will be in top form for many years to come!
CHAMP CHATS And what about plans for travelling this year then? This year I've just done a trip in Lanzarote with the Daveys and Braddocks! Had great waves too but now I'm of to Indo for two months with my dad shooting and flming for some new videos . After that it will be a short visit home to keep mum happy! Then it's back to france and the Pro Juniors start and once they're all done and dusted, it will be time to jetset of to warmer climates again! Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? In a mansion somewhere in Mexico with perfect waves everyday... hopefully!

It's been a wet and wild winter so far here in the UK. But for the British surfing community this is all the better as it means simply one thing – sheltered spots! Yes as those low pressures roll in off the atlantic and the south westerlies hit gale force then surfers all over britain look to those classic places that only come to life in big stormy conditions. one such place is that jewel in the north cornish crown – St Agnes. 31 -

Thousands head to Brisbane each year looking for just that, but most head south to the obviously named 'Surfer's Paradise' on the Gold Coast and delight in the buzz that fills the area. But if crowds aren't your thing, then why not head north instead!

SM Not just sand, sunshine and perfect peaks – unridden peaks too!
SM - 50
51 -
SM And as well as sand, sunshine and perfect peaks, it's even warm enough for boardshorts!

Next Issue So to finish off our thirteenth issue we'd like to say simply a great big thank you for being a part of our first year on the virtual magazine stand of the world's surfing media. It's down to you our readers that we've made it through but not only that as we've also watched our ratings soar, giving SURPHANG MAGAZINE a veritable position on the global surf media map. All this coupled with the positive feedback we receive regularly has brought us to a great point ready to launch into whatever exciting challenges the second year of SURPHANG MAGAZINE may bring. To set that off to a flying start, Issue Fourteen will see us jetsetting off around the Canary Islands where we caught up with UK Aerialist of the Year Harry Timson; spent some time with local lad and British Junior Squad member Will Davey; joined Spanish Under 16 Champion Alex Bauduin for a chat; and let Pro surfer James Woods tell us about his life on the road, from France to Fuerteventura! Keep your eyes out for all that winging its way onto all the social media sites very soon!
