A Day with Nic Doran HOT SHOTS DOWN UNDER Surphalosophy

Surphang Magazine

'Small but perfectly formed!' Nowadays, everybody always seems to be obsessed with size... the longest this, the highest that. Driving through Surfer's Paradise recently, my attention was drawn to the tallest building in Australia whilst heading down to Snapper Rocks where the Superbank is considered one of the longest, hollowest and best waves in the world! But does size really matter? Or is the old 'small but perfectly formed' still true?

Well seeing as most SURPHANG trips always seem to score small waves, then we certainly like to think so! But just as onshore is revered as the new offshore, then small seems to be the new big for certainly nowadays, the next generation seem to be able to go as big in small waves as they're predecessors could in the big stuff!

01 -

SM

So in this issue, featuring surfers from the largest continental island in the world, Australia, we showcase some of the next generation for whom ripping in small waves is their world! Pushing themselves to go faster, higher, further, size certainly doesn't matter to these guys for as long as there's a rideable wave then it's on. So sit back and enjoy this never small but always perfectly formed issue of your favourite online surfing magazine, SURPHANG! Sometimes small can be perfectly formed... Caloundra, Sunshine Coast. Welcome to

The Pro Show DEANE DOMINATES! Words & Photos: stu gaston

05 -

SM Noa Deane grabs every airborne opportunity at Duranbah, Australia.

Noa Deane is fast becoming one of Australia's top freesurfng talents. He's already being dubbed the next Dane Reynolds and if you've seen any of his many online freesurfng vids then it's not hard to see why! Coming from good surf stock, with his dad being surfng legend Wayne Dean, Noa is also dominating the local Gold Coast surf scene but not through endless competition wins. Noa is a pro simply because he rips and he rips in anything! What some see as windblown chop, Noa sees as a skatepark full of airborne potential. So when we had the chance to hook up with him last month, we didn't have to think twice. Here's the result of two days shooting and chatting with Noa Deane!

SM - 06

Name:

Noa Deane

Age: 18 Years surfng: 10+ years Where you live: Coolangatta Sponsors: Rusty, Dragon, Xcel, Captain Fin Co. Local break/s: Duranbah, Snapper Favourite surfers? Dane and JJ Florence Favourite place to surf? Lowers Favourite surf trick? A bit of everything Favourite board? I have many

The Pro Show What got you into surfng? Probably my dad, he didn't push me or anything and I worked out how fun it was and that was how it started. When and how did you become sponsored? I got properly sponsored when I was about 15 but I had a product one before that. Who in surfng inspires you most? I always liked Dane and John John too. I usually only look at Dane's blog on the internet haha. I watch heaps of skate videos too though. There’s a couple of guys I like watching like Dave Gonzalez. It’s more mellow. It’s all about the skating and not about just shit. No comps or anything just good skatin’ not much politics in it. A lot of young pros are heavily into skate culture. Why is that? You can skate however you want. You’re still gonna have your haters of course, but there is every diferent kind of skater you can think of. You look at skaters and there’s so much going on because they’re in cities, whereas most of the good waves are in remote areas and it’s pretty boring what’s going on outside the water. A lot of what people want to see is the culture going on around that person and that doesn’t happen in surfng.

09 -

SM Noa surfing where he wants, when he wants and how he wants – but doing it with style!

So what do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? Free surfng because I'm not restricted to a time and a place. That said, what do you need to succeed as a modern surfer then? You need a mixture. You need to surf but you need something other than surfng to make you stand out and get you coverage. The people who get heaps of coverage in magazines stick in your head. Some people win comps but they’re forgotten the day the next comp starts. No one will remember who won a comp last year, even on the WCT. I’d be stoked if I won a comp but bummed when the next comp comes around!

SM - 10

What song motivates you before a surf? School by Nirvana When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. I was out D'bah and I did a few of the biggest backside airs I've ever done, but no footage was taken unfortunately. What's the worst wipeout of your life? At Nias I had a good one, it wasn't very big but some how I got hung up and went over in the lip and got held down for a little while.

The Pro Show

What do you do when you don't surf? I like to play the drums/guitar, and if they are not available I like taking photos on flm Do you train as well as surf? Just surf. And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? I'm not too sure If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? Just things that I need, no point getting greedy! A nice house would be good. What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Chicken soup

13 -

SM Noa Deane mixing it up with some cheeky green room time.

What's your goal for the next year? Just to put out videos and try do a few comps here and there And what about the future? Where do you see yourself in fve to ten years ? I would be still surfng and having fun that's what I hope anyway!

SM - 14

Finally, what should surfng never lose? Having fun. People are getting too serious. Some people don’t realize it’s not MMA fghting, it’s a more creative sport. It’s not about getting as many waves as you can, it’s about learning the rules frst. You gotta learn the rules frst then when you do the time then you can get some waves instead of demanding waves and being a kook. Fair enough you might have a bad surf every 50 surfs but guys get stressed out every surf and you think, why do you do it? Just gotta remember it's simply about having fun!

15 -

SM

Noa having fun on his backhand too.

SM Noa Deane dominating Duranbah, with surely big things to come!

Noa deane In a modern world where everything seems to have to be constantly measured and checked its as good as the next thing, how fresh it is when you come across people who remember that life is about living and having fun and not about seeing if you're as good as the next person! For this reason alone, surely Noa Deane is destined to follow in the footsteps of Dane Reynolds. One things for sure, we are all going to be seeing much more of this fun loving surfer in the years to come!

Quinn's Win! Words & Photos: stu gaston

Quinn Bruce – remember that name! You're going to be seeing a lot more of it in the years to come. Having won the Under 16 Australian Champion title at the end of last year, Quinn is hungry for many more wins in Twenty Thirteen. He's most recently won the Australian VQS Championships for his age division and is now getting ready to go big at the World Junior Surfng Championships in Nicaragua next month. So we hooked up with Quinn to chat about his wins when we were rolling along the Gold Coast last month. Here's what went down.

19 -

SM Quinn Bruce whipping round an air reverse at his local, Duranbah on the Gold Coast!

Name: Quinn Jack Bruce Age: 14 Nickname: Quinny Years surfng: 6 years Where you live: Duranbah, Gold Coast, Australia Sponsors: Volcom Stone, Hammo surfboards, Creatures of leisure, Otis Eyewear and Sex Wax Local break/s: Duranbah Favourite surfer? My Dad Favourite place to surf? South Straddie Favourite surf movie? Modern Collective Favourite surf trick? Big Hack Favourite board? 5.7 High performance, Hammo

What got you into surfng? My Dad and my Brother were surfng all the time and I was doing life saving, I loved being in the water! My Dad taught me and I've been out there everyday since! When and how did you become sponsored? A local guy in Noosa named Shannon Neil when I lived on the Sunshine Coast got me with Volcom when I was 12. What moment are you most proud of in your surfng career so far? In Tasmania for the Australian titles I won the u/16 Allstar titles. Who in surfng inspires you most? My Dad for sure, he is out there everyday no matter what the conditions and just guys like MIck Fanning, John John Florence, guys who are pushing the sport. What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? I really enjoy competitions and being in a heat but travelling to surf good waves is my favourite things to do!

SM - 20

So as you mentioned, two thousand and thirteen has got of to a great start for you after becoming Under 16 Australian Champion at the end of last year. Talk us through that contest and the highs and lows that lead to you earning your title. Yeah well the Australian titles were held in Tasmania at the end of last year, It was absolutely freezing! It was tough to stay warm before your heats but I just kept focused and I was feeling well and I had a good board under my feet so I was stoked with the result! You had to overcome some solid surfng from your contenders? How do you rate your surfng peers over in Australia at the moment? Yeah all the other boys were ripping but you know someone has to lose and some one has to win and I guess i just got good waves in the heats I was in! I'd like to think as myself up there but you know just surfng all the time and trying to improve!

21 -

SM It's all pointing in the right direction for Quinn this year!

23 -

SM Quinn chucks out his fins at his local!

You've been surfng against these guys most of your competitive life. There must be diferent levels of camaraderie or rivalry in the ranks. How does this afect the way you surf in a heat? Yeah I know the way most of the kids surf and they know the way I surf but it doesn't really afect your heat because you just forget who you surfng against and get out there! So which of them did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? Jacob Wilcox for sure he has the solidest backhand and it's lethal in a heat! And now you're national champion, does that go down as your best victory to date? Yeah I guess, after the Australian titles I also won the RipCurl Grom Search on the Sunshine Coast which is one of my other achievements I'm stoked with!

SM - 24

What song motivates you before a surf? I like Metal, my brother plays insane guitar and stuf like Mettallica and Iron Maiden amp me up! When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. In South Australia, Pondalowie Bay, No one around just me my Dad and my Brother and a perfect peak, the water was freezing but it was an epic surf! What's the worst wipeout of your life? A 6 foot day at Snapper Rocks, I got washed under water for 20 meters. What do you do when you don't surf? When I don't surf I'm either watching a surf movie, skating or fshing!

And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? I was into Aussie Rules and LIfe saving. If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? I'd buy an island in Indo or somewhere like that for sure! What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Haha, I got some sushi down the road! What's your most overused word? Haha that would defnitely be sik!

SM Quinn goes for a quick stale grab!

So now you’re a champ, what are your goals for the year to come? This year I'd like to get some ratings in the Pro Juniors, maybe even win one too and do some QS's which is my main goal! And what about training? How do you keep on top of ftness and keep on pushing your surfng to help you achieve your goals? I have recently got a scholarship at the Australian High Performance Centre and I'm training there 2 times a week which I fnd is helping me a lot. So I will be training as much as possible to just stay ft and try to better my surfng!

SM - 28

29 -

SM Quinn Bruce whipping round an awesome air reverse at his local, Duranbah!

CHAMP CHATS Now you're from Coolangatta on the Gold Coast with some of the best waves that Australia has to ofer on your doorstep! But what about plans for travelling? Moving to Coolangatta is the best move ever! Get to surf some of the funnest waves in Australia and everyday, it has helped me a lot with my surfng! This year is my frst year that i will be going over seas! I will be heading to Fiji and Hawaii with Volcom which will be something I am defnitely looking forward to this year! Finally, where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? In ten years I'd love to see myself on the CT which is my dream, but you know I'm gonna do as many QS's as I can the next few years and just travel, surf for a living and enjoy myself!

Bring the Gold Coast into any surfing conversation and surfers across the globe will instantly think of Snapper Rocks, not surprisingly the area's most famous surf break. But just further south across the border into New South Wales lies Duranbah Beach – known by the locals simply as D'bah – and here you will find consistant surf whatever the conditions, owing to its prized position between Point Danger and the Tweed River entrance. No surprise then that some of the Gold Coast's best surfers, such as Mitch Crews and Jack Freestone, live just up Flagstaff Beach Road looking down on this less well known golden gem. We caught up with Jack and the local crew over the Easter weekend to see what D'bah has to offer plus thanks to local 'Waves Gallery' photographer, Anthony Mansfield have compiled this pictorial guide to Dee Golden 'Bah.

Up and down the coast of Australia, every town has its very own surfng culture and community and with it the local surf legends. Caloundra is no diferent except for one thing – they're local surf legend is the current ASP World Champion Title holder who was none other than a Caloundra lad himself! So for any grom growing up in such a surf town with such a legend, there's bound to be a bit of hype and pressure. Well if that's true, then current up coming Caloundra grom, Nic Doran doesn't show it! He's exceedingly cool, calm and collected about life but get him in the water and it's a very diferent story! I surf because it frees me from reality. Think of it as an expression, my expression to the world. The wave is my canvas and my boards are my paints, not one is the same in any shape or form. Hands push you to your feet, you don't think and it just takes one wave for that feeling to rush into your bones. It feels nice for that split couple of seconds to feel free, free from what this world has become. All we are searching for when that wave ends is a smile on our faces and the same feeling again. The simplistic idea of standing on a moving piece of water mind blows me to the best of times from seeing a wave roll in and hit shallow water and break. Clean crisp lines that stack the horizon that only a surfer will know the feeling. Gliding across the water like a bird in the sky, like a fsh in the sea. The ocean is when we feel closest to nature and to home than anywhere else. There is no better feeling than the feeling of being completely surfed out, the utter feeling of bloodshot eyes, sandy hair and so tired you can't walk no more will never get old. I don’t surf because everyone else does it or thinks it's cool... it’s the feeling that you get when you wake up before the sun frothing like a little grom itching to get out there. That’s the feeling that no other than a surfer will understand no matter how old you are we still hold the frothing little grom inside each and everyone of us.

SM - 118

Josh Harrison What got you into surfng? My Uncle was a big inspiration when I frst started surfng since he was a good surfer as well and my frst board was one of his that he gave me. Anyone happy haha What do you prefer, free surfng or competitions and why? A bit of both always gives balance, but comp surfng makes you push your limits.

What song motivates you before a surf? Anything that gets your heart going, songs of surf clips always gets you amped When and where was your best surf session? Talk us through it. Last year, much of our winter was light ofshore and pumping waves! I remember one day in particular at South Straddie, the waves were perfect 3 to 4ft and A-frames till the eye can see. Expecting to look over the wall and see 100 plus people out to only see six... Couldn’t believe my eyes seeing spitting barrels and no one there. Wave after wave perfect barrels surfng from sun up till sun down and no one to hassle. By far the best session I have had. What's the worst wipeout of your life? Probably Christmas 2011, 10ft Kirra and the barrel swallowed me up, hit the bottom, snapped 2fns out and snapped my board into 3 pieces. 119 -

Josh Harrison What do you do when you don't surf? Currently working as an Electrical Technician but free time I like to skate a lot, take photos, relax and sleep Do you train as well as surf? Yes, I Train with my good friend Douw Van Vuuren 3 times a week. All sorts of flexibility, strength and speed training And if you didn't surf at all, what sport would you play? Been skateboarding since 4 years of age so I'll go with that If you had unlimited money, what would you buy? Campervan/Bus and travel fnding new surf spots What's the healthiest thing you ate today? Chicken Cesar Salad Burger What's your most overused word? Heavy days

What's your goal for the next year? Do some International WQS events, progress my surfng and gain more exposure And what about the future? Where do you see yourself in fve to ten years time? Hopefully on the WQS fghting for a spot on tour, not really thinking about that just taking every event one heat at a time. 121 -

Go TEAM GB Words and photos: stu gaston

It may be almost a year since Olympimania swept the country up in Team GB hysteria, but for some the chance to represent their country at what they do best has come around once more! In a few weeks time, Surfng GB's Junior Surfng Team will be heading of to Nicaragua to take on the might of the world's best junior surfers in the ISA World Junior Surfng Games.

Go TEAM GB

Heading up the Under 16 Team will be current UK Pro Surf Tour Under 16 Champion, Angus Scotney. The RipCurl sponsored lad from Mawgan Porth has been busy this winter training, getting away to some of the best waves in Europe – here he is during a week in Lanzarote where he scored all time surf at La Santa! With this experience behind him then surely the mild mannered waters of Nicaragua should be well with in his grasp!

Go TEAM GB

Back on the Under 18 Team for a second time is previous UK Pro Surf Tour Under 16 Champion, Will Davey. Not only does he live and breath the waves of his local La Santa, but in his younger days, he joined his dad, Mark for many a surf trip to the Central American coastline. Once again, it looks like surfng well in the waters of Nicaragua should be well within Will's abilities!

Meanwhile, team veteran Miles Lee-Hargreaves will be returning for another opportunity to take on the world's best junior surfers in Nicaragua. Having competed in this event a number of times at various surf spots around the world, Miles will be looking to make his best ever result here especially as this will be his last chance to represent the UK at a Junior level.

Next Issue And so once again we come to the end of another month's fix of inspirational surfing photography. Despite being jam packed with gems from down under, we've decided that one issue simply doesn't do justice to everthing that Australia has to offer. So in Issue Seventeen we're heading to Sydney's surfing scene – its Northern Beaches such as Manly and Narrabeen. And there, once again we will bring you all the best in up and coming talent. But as well as all that, we're bunking off to Bali too with two intrepid travellers from opposite sides of the globe! So don't miss the next epic issue of SURPHANG!
