he senseless murder of 53-year-old Julie Paskall rocked the community of Newton, and beyond, but Paskall’s sister-in-law hopes the tragedy can be a catalyst for positive change – change, she hopes, that comes from the people. “I think that people need to take back their power, their own personal power, and that will help them take back their community,” said Joan Ross, who is married to Paskall’s only sibling. Paskall was beaten in what police believe was an attempted robbery on Dec. 29 while picking up her son from the Newton Arena. She died in hospital days later. Paskall is survived by her husband Al, their 16-yearold son and two adult daughters. “We can’t take back Julie’s death, but we can take back the meaningless nature of her death,” Ross said. “I’d really like to empower people on a personal level, on an individual level. And every person has something, they have something that they can give.” Ross said she sees the community is energized, and she hopes that energy goes in a positive direction. “You can’t destroy energy, you can only redirect it. So, yes, they’re having meetings for safety and all sorts of things, but I

Ross said she also hears the anger coming out of the tragic incident. “You don’t think we’re angry? We’re angry. It’s just too high a price for our family to pay. But it could be your family next. Don’t be us. I can’t change it by myself, but I know that everybody has power.” Right now, Ross said criminals are robbing the public of their peace of mind. “We’re letting them. So they’re not really robbing it, we’re giving it to them. Because we won’t stand up for someone being bullied in a crowd, someone stealing the cookie at Superstore. I don’t mean go and beat them up or have road rage, but say something. Do something. Don’t shrug it off and say, ‘Oh well, I can’t fix that.’ You sure can’t with that attitude.” Ross said she’s glad to see the public demanding change, but added she doesn’t want to see people blaming one another. “Stop blaming, stop pointing for someone else to make this a better world – to make this a better place, to make my community safer. Turn that finger on yourself and ask how you can make it safer.” Ross said she knows the reality of her neighbourhood. In fact, she said her daughter was once attacked at the Newton bus loop. A woman told her daughter she didn’t want her there, and ended up assaulting her. “Not one person stood up for a youth,” Ross said. “I understand people are afraid. And people have been taught not to make eye contact, not to get involved, you might draw that fire. And they’re saying you won’t be safe, but are you safe? Is that attitude creating a safe place? No, it’s not.” Ross said Paskall’s death doesn’t have to be for nothing if the community bands together to help one another.

They’re not going to have their mother, but maybe they’ll have a little piece that says my mother helped the world in a small way,” she said. “Don’t let your mother, your child, your husband, your loved one, have to even be injured, much less killed. Don’t let your family suffer because you didn’t learn this lesson. Don’t let it be your Julie.”

‘BE PART OF THE SOLUTION’

Ross acknowledged that the community has been speaking out about the area’s decline for some time, but said Paskall’s death has now made it impossible to ignore. But don’t point fingers, Ross urged. “Be a part of the solution,” she said. The people in power – like the mayor, elected officials and police – all have a responsibility, she said, but they don’t have all the answers or unlimited resources. “So don’t be mad at them. Support them.

How many of you go out and wave, or go up and congratulate them… They are people too, and they’re trying hard,” she said. Volunteer or tutor someone, extend a kind word, speak up when someone is being bullied, get to know your neighbour, Ross said, stressing that these are all things that make a community stronger, and safer. She pointed to the Nova Scotia students who began Anti-Bullying Day in 2007 by distributing 50 pink T-shirts after a male Grade 9 student was bullied for wearing pink. “Those were kids, and they took their power back. They stood up united and said they wouldn’t stand for it. And look what happened,” she said. “Everybody can think of someone that said something to them one day that made a difference. And what I’m challenging you to do is to be that for someone else. Say something, do something, make a difference if it’s only for one moment in that person’s life.”

Ross said she wants to hear the stories of compassion that are spurred from Paskall’s death. “I want to hear them, I want people to call into the Now, and say this is what I did, this is what someone did for me, this is how this story inspired me,” she said. “I bet you if we start to hear stories of the good things, it will spark more. The mayor’s working on it, and well she should be, but we have a responsibility to do something too.” Beyond that, be an extra set of eyes on the street and call the non-emergency police line if something seems suspect, she said. “Start taking license plate numbers, start phoning the police, start getting after them, that sort of thing. Notice. Look. Be aware,” she said. While police have yet to release any solid leads in the case, Ross is confident Paskall’s killer, or killers, will be caught. “There’s just not a big enough rock in Surrey to hide under anymore,” she said. Ross believes the attack was drug related and has a message for those responsible: “Look at yourself. Is that where you want to be? Killing someone for drug money? Are you going to allow your addiction to control you? Do you think there aren’t other people in the world that haven’t had your bag of hammers, your life, your horror, your grief? There are,” she said. “Maybe there’s hope for someone like that, some kind of redemption. It isn’t going to come from me, I don’t have that much charity in my heart, but I don’t hate them. But I don’t want them on the street. I don’t know that there’s any rehabilitation in that regard. I want the streets to be safe, and I don’t want them out there. WHALLEY — A woman who was struck by a 18-wheeler on Tuesday night has died. The 20-year-old Surreyite was hit at King George Boulevard and 104th Avenue around 8:30 p.m. She was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, but died of her injuries. RCMP said another motorist who

witnessed the accident flagged down the 45-year-old driver, who was unaware he had hit anybody. He stayed at the scene and has been co-operating with police. The investigation is ongoing and cops have yet to determine who was at fault or if alcohol or speed were factors. Witnesses are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP on the non-emergency line at 604599-0502.

SURREY — Dozens of local business owners have received suspicious calls from someone claiming to be from the Surrey Chamber of Commerce. The thing is, the chamber was renamed to the Surrey Board of Trade in 2005. SBoT CEO Anita Huberman found out about the string of calls earlier this month, at which point the board immediately alerted its 1,900 members. She also notified Surrey RCMP, who are looking into the matter. “From that email, I’ve received 30 to 40 responses from members who have received a similar call,” she said. “The main question that’s common with all of the responses we’ve received is that they’re wondering which businesses are looking to move.” According to Huberman, the caller identifies himself as Chad or Rashad and speaks with broken English. When the business owner says they are not looking to move, the caller hangs up.

Huberman said the board has its member directory online, which is how the caller likely gathers phone numbers and information about the businesses. One member tracked the phone number, which Huberman tried calling only to get a busy signal. She added that the caller ID sometimes comes up as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce – SboT’s head office in Ottawa – or as the office of an economic development region. “I was really surprised that the Canadian Chamber hadn’t heard about this,” she said. Huberman told the Now that while the board owns the rights to the name Surrey Chamber of Commerce, they don’t use it in any manner. She’s trying to get to the bottom as to why someone is calling members of the board under the guise of the old chamber. “We’re concerned about this because we don’t want businesses to be defrauded.” If you receive a call of this nature, please notify Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and inform the SBoT at 604-581-7130.

SURREY — With the transit referendum just 10 months away, the Surrey Board of Trade is calling on the Ministry of Transportation to release the would-be question now rather than later. The demands stem from the Ministry of Transportation and provincial government’s inability to put a definitive timeline on when the question will be released, leaving stakeholders such as the SBoT concerned that there won’t be enough time to educate the public on the matter. “We’ve been waiting for the question since the provincial election,” said SBoT CEO Anita Huberman. “We’d heard that it would be ready by the end of October (2013), and now it’s almost the end of January and we need time to educate our business community, as well as the population, about something so significant that will affect our economy today and tomorrow.” Last year, the B.C. Liberal government announced plans to hold a referendum in November 2014 regarding how TransLink funding should be spent. That referendum will decide if money will be spent north or south of the Fraser River, potentially on rapid transit for Surrey or a UBC SkyTrain line in Vancouver. The vote will also run concurrent with this year’s municipal elections. But before all that, Huberman would like an opportunity to educate the public about the implications of their vote. “We’ve done research on transit referendum campaigns in the U.S. and they’ve had multi-year campaigns to educate their populace, and November seems like so far away, but this question needs to be released now,” said Huberman. “We’re tired of waiting for it and we need to stop politicizing transportation.” Huberman said she’s been in touch with the Ministry of Transportation but was told that there was still no timeline on the

SURREY — Playing hardball with the Surrey Angels helps keep Dan Kelly’s passion for competitive baseball alive. The Angels play out of Cloverdale and are a part of a 30-plus hardball league. For the past three years, the 38-year-old Kelly, who prefers to see the game from behind the

plate, has also acted as the team manager. He said that lately, getting enough guys to fill the roster has been difficult. Although only nine players are needed, ideally Kelly aims for 17 a season because he knows that it becomes difficult to commit to a team due to family Dan Kelly engagements. “Every game was a different roster because I couldn’t get the committed guys,” he said. “I was begging people to come out. When you’re playing with eight or nine guys, it’s hard.” According to Kelly, it seems everyone

his age has families and prior commitments and thinks they have don’t enough time. “It stinks because I just want to play ball.” As a father who works and coaches his own son’s baseball team, Kelly understands how hard it is to fit in time for another activity. But for him, it’s worth it to get out, be active and play a sport that he’s enthusiastic about. “I just love getting out with the guys and smacking the ball around. You feel like a little kid when you’re out on the field,” he said. The Lower Mainland Baseball Association

30-plus league has eight registered teams in Surrey, Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Delta and Howe Sound. Once a week from April to September, games are played on diamonds throughout the Lower Mainland. Individual registration costs $180 per season, which includes coverage of park fees and equipment rentals. Kelly Grace, who has been playing with the Angels for the past four years, found that after 18, there weren’t a lot of options to play hardball. “Now there’s more awareness around the sport at our age and our level,” Grace said. “It’s the one sport I really have a lot of passion for.” To play, email dpkelly1975@hotmail.com.

o what’s happening in the news for Surrey and North Delta? I leafed through the Now newspaper and discovered plenty of activity in the area. Among the highlights: Surrey council is considering a tax hike with an eye on increasing funding for schools. The city’s population is growing so fast that the schools can’t keep pace. As a result, Surrey is one of the poorest funded school districts in the province. Council members, including Coun. Marvin Hunt, are torn over whether to hold the lid on tax increases or raise the rates in an effort to help the school district catch up with growth. Crime is an ongoing concern in Surrey – especially in Whalley and Newton. One woman in

North Surrey is irate after her home was burglarized four times in a six-month period. Elsewhere, Surrey RCMP were extremely busy in the past week as they responded to a wide variety of criminal activity, including a double shooting in Newton; a domestic assault and unlawful confinement incident in Whalley; a homemade pipe bomb and a pedestrian struck by a truck on 8th Avenue in South Surrey. North Delta has its own crime to deal with as two men staged an armed robbery of a bank on Scott Road. On a more positive note, commuters are thankful for a new park and ride lot that opened in the past week. The new facility features space for 961 cars and a “kiss and drop” area for those who just need access to transit without the need to park a vehicle. And on a more commercial note, apartments in Guildford rent for $380 a month; you can buy Kinney shoes for $11.89 on sale, chicken breasts sell for $2.18 per pound; a loaf of bread is 78 cents; a new townhouse sells for under $210,000 and

everybody is excited about Expo. Needless to say, the newspaper I’m referencing did not come from the top of the stack in the recycle bin. It was published May 7, 1986 and was provided by Guildford resident Walt Kerr, who was amazed by how little the issues have changed in the last 28 years. The newspaper design and production quality are crude by today’s standards, but the content is remarkably similar. Here we are in 2014 and Surrey councillors still wrestle with the need to address rapid growth in the city versus an almost pathological desire to keep taxes lower than anywhere else in the Lower Mainland. It’s a nice record to have in a politician’s resume, but are artificially low taxes really a good thing when more than 1,000 people every month are moving into the city and adding to the strain on the

existing infrastructure? Crime is still an ongoing concern – especially in hot spots like Whalley (sorry, City Centre), Newton and Guildford. The main talking points have changed in that it takes a couple or 24 murders to get our attention today instead of armed robberies, auto theft and brawling, but crime is a constant and people want to know about it. And that is hardly surprising. Surrey is the second-largest city in the province and while most of the people moving here are hard-working families, there are a few dirt bags making the migration too. If just five per cent of the people moving here are “known to police,” that works out to 50 per month and 600 a year. With the recidivism rates being what they are, crime will always be an issue here no matter what grandiose plan the collective NDP MLA brain trust tries to sell

to voters. Marvin Hunt still has a seat on Surrey city council. He’s come and gone and returned again in the past three decades and now he won’t go away. He won a seat in the legislature in the last provincial election, but has refused to relinquish his council position despite a promise to do so by the first week in January. Commuting from Surrey to anywhere in the Lower Mainland remains an utter and complete pain in the posterior. So much so that Surrey residents would rather drive than take transit. And who can blame them? A 20-minute drive from Newton to Morgan Crossing in South Surrey is acceptable. Make the same trip on transit and commuters take a leap into bussing hell complete with three transfers and a trip duration that varies between one to two hours. And that’s

just within Surrey. Stretch the trip to Richmond or South Burnaby or South Vancouver and its no wonder people just say to heck with it and drive. TransLink recently opened an expanded Park and Ride lot in South Surrey. In over two months of operation, I personally have never seen a car in the new lot aside from kids doing donuts in a beat-up Honda. Thanks for the skateboard park, TransLink. The Surrey landscape may have changed in the last 28 years, but the issues remain the same. It’s probably safe to say that 30 years from now, Surrey residents will be reading about crime, rapid growth, Coun. Marvin Hunt and lousy transit service. The Editor, I would like to draw your attention to an event that is extremely important to those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, and for their caregivers. It is the Investors Group Walk for Memories and it is set for this Sunday (Jan. 26). I speak from personal experience when I say that Alzheimer’s disease is devastating not only to those with the disease but also for those who love them. My wife Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 12 years ago. As a volunteer facilitator, I try to help people by providing support and information. Caregivers have told me this helps Stan and Shirley them cope with their situation, knowing they are not alone. I know from experience it is not an easy task. I know what they are going through. More than 70,000 British Columbians have Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. Many more people are affected as dementia impacts the whole family as well as friends. Roses to the nice couple for giving me a fountain drink after I gave them a coupon at Subway. It was a “buy a foot long, get a second for $1.99” coupon. The coupon required getting a fountain drink. Since they didn’t want the drink, they gave it to me. Rotten tomatoes to our transit system. While driving up 104th Avenue, I passed the 96B line bus. It would be funny if it wasn’t so ridiculous – the bus was empty. I know drivers are only allowed to pick up passengers at certain bus stops but when they are empty they should be able to pick up the 10 or so people waiting for a bus that it drove right past. Fragrant purple roses to the lovely lady in the Guildford food court who paid for my daughter’s meal. The debit system for our bank cards was down and you did her a great favour. My daughter was quite overwhelmed by your generosity and will pay it forward somehow. You are an angel. Thank you again! A 30-rose bouquet to my awesome Grade 11 social studies class! You have all worked so hard this semester. It has been a real privilege teaching you and getting to know you all this year! Joy ride for Becky at Surrey Little Theatre ArtsScene Melanie Minty Columnist

re you stuck in the middle? Middle age, middle management, middle class – just a routine that shows no promise of change, no excitement. Surrey Little Theatre’s next production, Becky’s New Car, is a delightful original comedy (with serious overtones) of what could happen if by chance an escape from “the middle” comes along. Becky’s New Car isn’t about a new car. Becky (played brilliantly by Robyn Bradley – I know, I have seen some of the rehearsals) works for a car dealership. Fate steps in one night and offers up a chance at a new life for Becky. The audience helps Becky with her choices, and with other chores, like collating reports. So, just a warning: If you don’t want to participate, don’t sit in the front rows – although, really, this is part of the fun of live theatre. Marko Hohlbein directs this technically challenging play. The more than 80 lighting cues and 20-something sound cues must operate seamlessly to keep the pace of the play vibrant and Becky frantically moving from one scene to another without benefit of blackouts or costume change. This play needs a strong director, and Hohlbein has the skills. He also selected an excellent cast consisting of Bradley, Terry Thomas, Phillip J. Hale, Ken Boyd, Laura Luongo, Harry Pering and Cindy Peterson Good. Becky’s New Car runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 22 at Surrey Little Theatre (7027 184th St.) on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $15 – book now. The Foursome (the SLT season-opener last fall) and now Becky’s New Car should be familiar to Surrey audiences, as they have been recently performed at Surrey Arts Centre as part of Arts Club Theatre on tour. It is very brave for a community theatre club to mount a production that has seen great success from a professional company. I can’t compare community (amateur) actors to

We are fortunate out here in Surrey to have both. Enjoy. Vancouver’s Arts Club company has been coming out to Surrey Arts Centre for quite a few years now. The popularity of their “on tour” series is on the increase. Driving Miss Daisy is the second of its touring productions for this season, and it runs on the main stage at the Bear Creek Park venue until Jan. 25. This is one of the most remarkable plays ever written, and won not only a Pulitzer Prize for playwright Alfred Uhry but also an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay and Best Picture, along with a Tony award on Broadway. It was the first play Uhry wrote. Not bad. Jessie Award-winning actress Nicola Lipman will win your heart and soul as

the feisty Miss Daisy. John Campbell is the chauffeur, and Brian Linds is Miss Daisy’s son. Tickets are $29 to $43, including all fees. Well, there is the one obvious difference between community theatre and the professionals – ticket price. It’s amazing that actors want to be paid for their work. Even more amazing is that we have a serious supply of actors willing to work only for audience applause. There’s more community theatre across the river in New Westminster. White Rockbased actor Keaton Mazurek takes the stage at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Lawrence Roman’s domestic comedy, Alone Together. This is Keaton’s first production with Vagabond Players, but he has previously

performed with Stage 43 and White Rock Players. His roles have included Rick in Woman in Mind, Brian B. in The Good Game, Christopher Ross in Who Walks in the Dark and John in The Lion in Winter. These plays all won community theatre awards. Could it be because of Keaton? Alone Together is a warm, witty comedy fit for every middle-aged couple that has raised a family and the kids have left home – but return. Directed by Dale Kelly, the play stars two other performers who are well known to Vagabond audiences: Ross Friesen, last seen on the Bernie Legge stage as Maxim de Winter in Rebecca, and Ryan J. Hoopsters raise cash to fight breast cancer The KPU Eagles women’s basketball team is taking on an opponent of another kind: breast cancer. The Kwantlen Polytechnic University team is hosting a game-night fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s (CBCF) B.C./Yukon chapter this Friday, Jan. 24, during a doubleheader that will

see both the women’s and men’s teams host Capilano University Blues. Fans will be able to support CBCF by purchasing a pink T-shirt for $10, and ribbons, pens and bracelets by donation. In addition, spectators can bid on silent auction items and donate their gamenight admission to CBCF.

“The women’s team deserves a lot of credit for putting this together,” says David Kent, KPU’s new director of recreation and athletics. “In my experience, student athletes don’t have a lot of time to spare, but they made the time for this because it’s important.” Friday’s event will be held in the so-called “Bird’s Nest”

FLEETWOOD — Surrey may be B.C.’s second-largest city geographically, but there’s hardly anywhere for Patrick McWilliams and his band to play. The 18-year-old frontman of The Cut Losses, a local teenage indie-rock trio, has performed in the area for nearly two years, but when it comes to finding all-ages venues in Surrey, there’s “almost nothing.” “If we want to play a show, it’s pretty much, we get our drum set and some amps and go set up on a field,” he said. “There’s nothing permanent.” Aside from the odd teen-focused event like Youth Fest or Surrey Shines, the Cut Losses are unable to find all-ages venues for them and their underage fans – and he’s seeing it happen more and more with bigger-name touring groups. “All the bands that I was brought up on, they aren’t really getting booked at Rogers Arena or bigger venues where anyone can go,” he said. In B.C., he said, his favourite bands are getting booked at smaller clubs and bars,

and there’s no designated areas for minors in those licensed establishments. “If I want to go see a band, I have to hope that they have a Portland or a Seattle tour date and drive down to the States.” American venues are allowed to host all-ages concerts where liquor is served; ID is checked at the bar instead of at the door, and the drinking areas are separated from the all-ages areas. McWilliams said he thinks some Canadian cities are afraid that making an all-ages venue will become a go-to spot for teens to sneak in drugs and alcohol, but he feels giving youth somewhere to go will have the opposite effect. “Not only do we not have a venue, but there’s nothing for teenagers to do,” he said, noting that underage house parties with drugs are on the rise. “It makes me kind of depressed.” In an effort to establish a venue for minors, the Cut Losses are performing a show at Astorino’s Ballroom in Vancouver on Feb. 5 to raise funds for Safe Amp, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating all-ages venues. “They’re doing it all for free out of volunteer work, which is crazy for people like me,” said McWilliams, adding that Safe Amp has its own P.A. system and a few microphones. “You can basically put on your own show and work with this company and they’ll help market you for free.” The show – featuring alt-rock bands Rayneman, Northern Rain and The Vidos – has a beach theme to go along with The Cut Losses’s sound. “We try to be surf punk, because that’s how the west coast used to be, especially in California, and all of our favourite bands are of that genre,” he said. “It’s kind of ironic because it’s winter.” Tickets are $5 at the door, and the show starts at 7 p.m. For more information, visit facebook.com/thecutlosses.

Elvis movies the latest move for tribute artist Friskie TheBuzz Tom Zillich Arts & Life Editor

andy Friskie has put together a stage show featuring songs from Elvis Presley’s popular movies. The long-established tribute artist is joined by a Vegas-style band and his daughter, Cassandra Friskie, on a “That’s The Way It Is” tour of B.C., which includes a concert date at Chandos Pattison Auditorium, located in the Fraser Heights area of Surrey, on Saturday, Feb. 1. “We are doing something that has never been done before – a show featuring the hits from Elvis’ movies, so people can relive the excitement,” he said. Cassandra has followed in her father’s footsteps, as she is now busy doing tributes to Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton and others. “She was a natural performer from the time she could talk and play,” her dad recalled. “I remember when she was about two, looking outside and seeing her singing to some of the kids as loud and strong as she

BEAR CREEK — There was no fairy-tale ending for the Fleetwood Park Dragons. After a week of competitive senior boys high school basketball, the Tamanawis Wildcats dominated the senior boys’ final of the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic on Friday night, overwhelming the Dragons 88-47. The 23rd-annual showcase of Surrey hoops talent packed the bleachers at Enver Creek Secondary as family, friends and fans waited for the tip-off, which was won by Tamanawis. While Fleetwood sunk a pair of three-pointers early on, it wasn’t until the second quarter that they put anymore points on the board. Meanwhile, the Wildcats gained a considerable lead by putting up tremendous defence and picking their spots under the Fleetwood hoop. Sukhraj Biring picked the ball from Jordan Mendiola for a lay-up to round out the first period 28-6. “Our strategy was basically to put the gas on and play the entire game trying to get everyone cycled through, every player cycled through off the bench and just keep the intensity up,” said Wildcats assistant coach Andrew Sturgeon after the game. Tamanawis gained a 30-point lead at the start of the second period, partly due to Sukhjot Bains, who drained two three-point shots in a row, bringing his team’s score to 39 and prompting the Fleetwood coach to call a time out. “Sukh’s a great player,” said Sturgeon, noting that Bains was named MVP of the tournament. “He’s the force, really. SURREY — The Holy Cross Crusaders ruled the courts at the 2014 B.C. Catholic School Basketball Championships hosted by the Fleetwood school last weekend. For the second consecutive year, the Crusaders swept the gold medals with both the senior boys and girls winning in Saturday’s championship final. In girls’ action, the defending provincial AA champs were hardly tested en route to their eighth consecutive Catholic banner. The Crusaders capped the week by dispatching Burnaby’s St. Thomas More 5928 in the title game. Michelle Bos was honoured as the tournament MVP while the first team allstar list included guard Nicole Vander Helm and forwards Amy Sprangers and Rachel Beauchamp.
