Rail safety
Dangerous goods traffic on the rise in White Rock Christopher Poon
Now staff Twitter @questionchris
WHITE ROCK — The number of trains carting dangerous goods through White Rock appears to be on the rise, and the city’s Rail Safety Task Force isn’t pleased. At Tuesday’s task force meeting, the issue of dangerous goods was brought up after it was noted full-length trains carrying crude oil have recently been seen passing through the waterfront. According to Coun. Larry Robinson, who first brought forth the issue of dangerous goods after citizens alerted him to the issue, the number of cars carrying dangerous goods has steadily increased. “In the space of time we started watching, we’ve gone from five or six cars to just last Friday, where we’re now getting full trains of 120 cars going south to north with crude oil,” he said. “On Friday at about 5:30, I was down along the waterfront for a walk and when I saw one coming my jaw dropped. We had had reports and sure enough there was one coming... the whole thing has moved on to a full train of crude oil.” Previous reports have seen instances of chlorine and hydrochloric acid passing through the city, but Robinson noted those instances were usually around four to six cars per train. “It’s changed so fast in two months, we were talking about someday having full trains of petroleum and now we have it,” Robinson said. see RELOCATING TRACKS › page 3

CITY CENTRE — Surrey’s new city hall is open for business. At the media tour Tuesday, Watts called the new hall an “iconic piece of architecture” and praised the hard work that the designers and construction workers have put into the 180,000-square-foot building over the last two years. “This is really an exciting time for the City of Surrey here... as part of the transformation of the metropolitan core, and to really look at how we function as a city of over half a million people,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. The six-storey hall houses 750 city staff across its numerous departments, as well as public services like daycare, community meeting rooms and a

council chambers that doubles as a theatre for local arts groups. “It was important to make sure that there were many community aspects built into the city hall,” said Watts. Construction workers were still hustling around during the tour, piecing together the chambers and the mayor’s office, and putting finishing touches on the building. City manager Vincent Lalonde said the hall was 95 per cent complete, and that the city ensured that all city services were available for the set opening date of Feb. 17. The hall was originally scheduled to open last September, but was bumped to December and then February due to unforeseen obstacles
in the construction process. The 2013 Mayor’s Charity Ball in October was expected to take place inside the new hall, but was instead held just outside on the community plaza in dining tents. According to Watts, the construction of the new hall has spurred $3 billion of investment from the private sector since it was first announced. When asked about the $97-million price tag for the new hall, Watts repeated that the lease of the old city hall will cover $37 million of the cost, and noted that the tax revenue generated from the nearby private investments “far exceeds what we’ve paid for city hall.” Lalonde assured reporters that the provincial government, which has thus far agreed to lease about one third of the old hall for 22 years, is expected to eventually lease the entire building. “We do expect... that over time, the province will take over the entirety of the complex because it’s centrally located with the RCMP, the pretrial and all the court services that are there,” he said.

Relocating tracks ‘something we have to press,’ says Meyer
‹ from page 1
Currently, Transport Canada standards have it so communities with rail lines running through them receive a quarterly report on what dangerous goods have passed through their communities. However, these reports are retroactive and communities receive them after the materials have already been shipped through. In White Rock, that list goes to the fire chief. “It’s after the fact... and the intent of that is to at least allow the municipality to
understand what actually is going through and make some provisions on how they would eventually deal with it,” said city manager Dan Bottrill. “Having said that, you could get completely new dangerous goods coming through the current year, so it doesn’t really add a lot of value.” To that end, it was suggested the city approach Transport Canada and railway operator Burlington Northern Santa Fe about possibly starting a pilot project involving real-time reporting of dangerous goods coming through a community. “What’s attractive is that White Rock is so
actively pursuing relocation as small, we have one firehall and it’s the key focus, but Coun. Alan very controllable,” said Robinson. “If it works it works, if it doesn’t Campbell said they need to keep it doesn’t.” things in perspective. Task force chair Grant Meyer “We have to bite off what also noted the city should also we can chew, this we can deal keep in mind the possible moving with,” he said. “Relocation is a of the railway tracks, which was huge thing and it’s federal, way the subject of an open house held beyond us. You tell me where alongside Surrey last fall. this new line would be because Grant Meyer “Looking at alternate routing is the powers that be would have something we have to press,” he said. to determine where that’s going, then the Those in attendance also expressed big bucks come in.” disappointment that the city was not cpoon@thenownewspaper.com

Transportation committee
Surrey explores road pricing to fund transit Jacob Zinn
SURREY — The city is exploring the idea of implementing road pricing to raise money for TransLink to help fund future transportation projects. On Monday, Paul Lee, rapid transit and strategic projects manager for the City of Surrey, presented the transportation committee with his research on road pricing and how a model could be best implemented to help bridge TransLink’s $600-million gap between its revenues ($1.44 billion) and expenditures ($1.5 billion). See also MONORAIL PITCH › page 8
Road pricing collects funds from drivers through tolls, fuel and carbon taxes, vehicle levies or other methods in a way that “reflects the full economic, social and environmental costs of driving a car.” “One of the goals is to generate revenue so that it provides the opportunity to recover the costs of building, operating and maintenance of the system of infrastructure,” said Lee, who said a joint technical review in 2012 determined road pricing was the most accepted form of funding. Lee discussed a handful of ways to implement road pricing, including a system of high-tech cameras – similar to how tolls are collected on the Port Mann Bridge – or by embedding a GPS in every vehicle to measure how far people are driving and when they travel.
...the idea would be to replace that fuel tax with road pricing. “By using technology to track people by how far they travel or how much they travel... we can charge accordingly to generate revenue,” he said. Lee noted that Oregon recently adopted a road pricing network, charging drivers 1.5 cents per mile and offering a refund on the state’s gas tax. While Surrey’s 17-cents-per-litre fuel tax falls under road pricing, transportation manager Jaime Boan said electric cars and border shoppers who purchase gas in the United States are making it challenging for the city to collect funds that way. “If we went to a method like this... the idea would be it would replace that fuel tax with road pricing,” said Boan. “As the vehicles advance as well, odds are it would already be built into the vehicles.” Lee noted that road pricing could charge users more for using their vehicles during heavier traffic times and offer discounts during off-peak hours, with the intent of easing congestion during rush hour. Coun. Barinder Rasode asked how much it would cost to collect the money, like how Treo gathers funds for users of the Port Mann. Lee estimated that 30 cents of every dollar from the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges go to administrative costs, but noted that Oregon’s system costs less than 10 cents per dollar.

Provincial budget means bigger costs, say NDP Tom Zytaruk
Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk
VICTORIA — The provincial budget released Tuesday offers a few carrots for families with younger children, and firsttime homebuyers. But it also brings in a four per cent increase in Medical Service Plan premiums. Children born on or after Jan. 1, 2007 are eligible for more than $1,200 for their Registered Education Savings Plan and starting in April 2015 a B.C. Early Childhood Tax Benefit will provide up to $55 per month for children under six years old. The government also increased the threshold for property transfer tax for first-time homebuyers, to $475,000 from
$425,000. The New Democrats, however, are saying British Columbians can expect to pay an average of $900 more over the next three years just in hydro and medical premium increases under the Liberal government’s budget. New Democrat finance critic Mike Farnworth said that, over the next three years, hydro will cost the average B.C. family $477 more, and they’ll be paying $400 more in MSP premiums. “The B.C. Liberals’ narrow political self-interest has once again trumped the interests of hard-working B.C. families,” Farnworth said. “This budget is built on the backs of B.C. families, making them pay more but get less.”

Policing
Surrey can now report crime online Tom Zytaruk
Now staff Twitter @tomzytaruk
SURREY — Surrey residents can now report less serious crimes to police online. Check out the Surrey RCMP’s website at surrey.rcmp.ca, look for “Report a Crime” and click on “Online Reporting.” For serious crimes, calling 911 is still the way to go. But examples of crimes that can be
reported online are ones with unknown suspects in cases of theft under $5,000, vandalism, theft from autos, noise complaints and traffic violations. “No matter how small an offence might be – a broken window or something stolen from your car – we want to hear about it,” Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said. Delta Police has had a “no call too small” policy for several years now.

Second-degree murder ‘off table,’ defence argues Tom Zytaruk

NEW WESTMINSTER — Beatrice Thomas should be acquitted of murder – or in the alternative be found to have acted in self-defence – in the 2011 stabbing death of her common-law husband Quannah O’Soup in North Delta. That’s what her lawyer Victoria Desroches argued Monday, at B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. Thomas, 38, is being tried for seconddegree murder in connection with the stabbing death of O’Soup, 37, inside the tiny half-duplex the couple rented on 80th Avenue across from McCloskey elementary school. “Ms. Thomas should be acquitted, full stop,” Desroches told Justice Trevor Armstrong, during her final submissions. “Second-degree murder is off the table.” The court will reconvene on Thursday (today), to set a date for when Armstrong will reveal his verdict. Desroches argued that the Crown failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Thomas intended to murder O’Soup. The defence called no evidence at the trial but Armstrong heard from two Crown witnesses – Patricia Thiessen, 52, and Timothy Senft, 45 – who were inside the house with Thomas and O’Soup when O’Soup died on July 3, 2011. Thomas’s daughters, aged 10 and 15 at the time, also lived with them. She and O’Soup were crack cocaine smokers who lived off welfare and
supplemented their income by shoplifting. The court heard that Thiessen and Senft were in the kitchen and didn’t see the stabbing, which happened in the living room. Nor did the children, who are now in foster care, witness the violence as they were asleep in their room. Thiessen, Thomas and O’Soup had been drinking and smoking crack during the hours leading up to the stabbing. Thiessen testified that O’Soup was in the bedroom, smoking crack, and she and Thomas were in the bathroom doing the same, when Thomas pulled out a pipe from under the sink and began smacking it against her hand. “She said if anything happens, this is self defence,” Thiessen testified. “She said if anything happens, to take care of the girls.” During her final submissions Desroches attacked Thiessen’s testimony as “entirely unreliable” and “completely lacking in internal consistency.” She described it as being a “maze of ambiguity.” Senft, however, was a credible Crown witness, Desroches argued. Desroches noted Senft characterized O’Soup as being belligerent, nasty, threatening and irritable that evening, whereas his own mood, and that of the the two women, “was upbeat.” Desroches argued the Crown hadn’t produced any reliable evidence that Thomas accosted O’Soup physically or verbally, or even brandished a knife. Desroches added the evidence doesn’t bear out that Thomas was the aggressor, but quite the opposite. “Ms. Thomas must be acquitted,” she said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY — Even though they said it was more of a Shelbyville thing, Surrey may pursue a monorail of its own. John Murchie, owner of Murch-Tech Consulting Corp., went before the city’s transportation committee on Monday to propose the installation of a monorail, as an alternative to extending the SkyTrain or implementing light rail transit (LRT). “This is the lowest-priced transportation system to date that I know of in the world,” said Murchie of the monorail. “We have to have an economic transportation system to get the interurban kid into town, when he’s a low-income earner or we’re not going to survive our structure.” Unlike SkyTrain, Murchie said a monorail would have a lightweight design that could be integrated into any community without causing urban planning difficulties. He showed a video that explained that a hangdown monorail could be suspended from tracks 40 feet in the air and safely run above
traffic on existing highways. He added that a monorail system would be more versatile than LRT, citing traffic issues in San Francisco caused by its Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. “Light rail runs around $50 million a mile and you’ll obstruct the traffic for years to come,” he said. He suggested running a monorail along 104th Avenue between Central City Shopping Centre and Guildford Town Centre, which is one of three routes that Mayor Dianne Watts has proposed for future LRT. Furthermore, Murchie said a monorail network between cities could be used to transport oil and goods, not just commuters. “The world is looking for cheap transportation, and the sad part is nobody’s trying to do that. I believe we could do it here in Surrey.” Coun. Barinder Rasode asked city staff to research if monorail could be a viable form of transportation in Surrey and provide a report to the committee.

NORTH DELTA — Delta Police are looking for the thieves who broke into a Scott Road music store and made off with $11,000 in electric guitars. The Long & McQuade store, at 8291 Scott Rd., was burglarized at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Manager Bill Roberts suspects the thieves cased out the store because they took “five of the most expensive guitars we had in the store.” Acting Sgt. Sarah Swallow said a police dog searched the area but “the canine wasn’t able to pick up any type of track.” Police believe a vehicle was used in the burglary. Swallow suspects the thieves will likely try to sell the stolen guitars to a pawnshop, or on the internet. The stolen guitars are a Fender ’52 re-issue Tele model 10-0202-850 (serial number 76833), a Fender Jazz AM SRS model 19-0660-706 (serial US11296776), a Gibson Les Paul Standard LPS-

Provincial budget
Liberals’ wonky idea of ‘balance’ ViewFrom TheCheap Seats Michael Booth
FOLLOw miChAeL On twitteR
S
asquatches, Ogopogo and balanced provincial budgets – which of these three doesn’t exist in British Columbia? (Hint: it’s not the first two.) Native people in this province have long oral traditions describing large, hairy humanoid creatures running through the woods, and even today, there are those among us who are convinced that any oddshaped elongated hole in the snow is evidence of bigfoot. The Ogopogo legends of a serpentine creature dwelling in Okanagan Lake also date back to pre-European contact. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent scouring the lake for evidence with no conclusive results, but that doesn’t stop boaters from visualizing the creature in every floating scrap of
driftwood. The sasquatch and Ogopogo are two iconic creatures of lore in British Columbia that, despite an absence of conclusive proof of their existence, we kinda hope really are out there. A balanced provincial budget on the other hand, that’s just silly talk. Utter folly. People claim to have seen the first two creatures every year, but you would have to be nearing retirement age to recall when a B.C. government introduced a budget that was truly balanced. You know, an event where the money spent does not exceed provincial revenues? Now you’re talking nonsense. By my rough estimate, the last time that happened was in the late 1960s or early ’70s. Since then, successive provincial administrations have been spending money like they were printing the stuff in the basement of the legislature buildings. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Mike de Jong and the Christy Clark Liberals made it zero for my adult lifetime when they presented the latest budgetary projections replete with accounting sorcery, conveniently overlooked costs and rosy outlooks
on revenues that belie the reality the rest of us live in. Heck, de Jong even admitted in the days leading up to the unveiling of his budget that he would be proudly presenting a document where the money spent would match the revenues collected by Victoria – without taking into account government spending on major projects and initiatives. Kind of a major loophole don’t you think? The budget tabled Tuesday outlines the projected spending for all the assorted provincial ministries. More money dedicated to health, less to education, the justice system and social services. Oh yeah, the price of cigarettes is going up as well, although how the government can count on revenues for that particular sin tax in a time when smokers have become
social pariahs is almost as bewildering as de Jong’s claim to have presented a balanced budget in the first place. So while the administrative and day-to-day expenses of the assorted ministries have been vaguely accounted for in the budget, there is still that niggling loophole out there that could well produce billions of dollars in extra spending. Mega projects such as the Site C dam in northeastern B.C., replacing the Massey Tunnel, hospital and school construction, infrastructure improvements – these are the sorts of expenditures that have been conveniently overlooked in the budget. But that’s OK because nobody really knows the true cost of such projects until they are completed – long after the next election. Imagine if the average B.C.
taxpayer adopted a similar approach to budgeting. Wages will cover the mortgage, property taxes, food, transportation and the kids’ braces. Then if we return all the empty bottles in the garage to recycling, we cover the cost of the paint needed for the house. There, we’re all set. Except for the new deck and hot tub for the patio, the new car we need to replace the 13-year-old clunker in the driveway, the mid-winter getaway to Mexico, the new holiday trailer for summer vacation, and, and, and… No problem, just put it on credit and worry about it next year. See how long you can follow that plan before the collection agencies clog your voicemail and bailiffs show up at your door. I’m not sure what is more insulting – that the
politicians who create this fiscal three-card monte scheme claim it to be a legitimate balanced budget, or that they expect the populous to believe it. Gordon Campbell’s Liberals introduced legislation that required successive provincial governments to only pass balanced budgets, but it has become clear in the years since that such strict rules are really just rough guidelines. Mark Twain said there are only three untruths in the world – lies, damn lies and statistics. Well, Mr. Twain clearly died too soon to see the elaborate hoops finance ministers will jump through in the desperate hope of being able to claim they have balanced a budget. I completely agree with Ivan Scott about the issues surrounding policing and Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. Watts has been a tremendous mayor of Surrey since 2005. She has made commendable advancements that benefit both the city as well as its citizens. However, as an aspiring police officer, her stance regarding policing and crime prevention seems off to me. In an article from January 2014, Watts said she’d “hire 100 officers tomorrow if city had the money” and yet she told a newspaper in 2003 the city could use 100 more police officers. Surprisingly enough, the city also had enough money to build an 180,000-square-foot city hall with a price tag of $97 million. And after a recent tragedy that occurred in Newton, the mayor has suddenly remembered to think of crime reduction strategies. I am not at all against these strategies but what is more important, in my opinion, is hiring more police officers so areas are well patrolled. Mayor Watts visited my school for an hour of discussion, and when I posed the question about why more officers aren’t being hired to patrol and ensure public safety, she beat around the bush, leaving my question unanswered. However, my question was answered when at a recent council meeting the mayor announced she will be reducing the number of RCMP officers who attend community safety forums, events and crime reduction meetings. Clearly, Watts does not understand the importance of the police-public relationships. Instead of hiring personnel who ensure public safety, she is simply making it difficult for citizens to feel secure in their own city. As Coun. Barinder Rosode said, “I think it’s time to review our targets, and it’s time to revisit the goals.” And quite frankly, I believe public safety should be at the very top of the priority list.

The Editor, Re: “Surrey addresses local concerns at Newton safety forum,” the Now online. I was at the well-attended neighbourhood safety forum in Newton on Saturday. I had originally thought it was a great idea, but I did not realize it was going to be an election campaign for the mayor and councillors. There was so much self-back-patting, I was anticipating there would be a request for donations. There was a very long list about what was going to be done or was planned to do in the future, not what was in action now. Even after eight years in office, everything is always going to be started in two to four years. They did put in a light bulb at the arena and I heard something about cameras. But, when the topic came up about increasing RCMP right now, the subject seemed to be quickly avoided. So, if something was going to have a continuous, lengthy cost, the mayor did not wish to speak about it. A $100-million new city hall building was/is not a high priority in my books. I am finding it very scary out there now, after living here for 20 years.

By not driving at 30km/h in these zones, not only are you breaking the law, you are also endangering the lives of young children. Shame on you. rotten tomatoes to those “everything is beautiful” people who complain about people being negative. Do you know the difference of being negative and telling the truth, exposing things that are wrong and should be changed to your benefit? People like you are always the first in line after a change has been made to reap the benefits. Remember Jack Webster? People like you called him negative too, but they always tuned into CKNW to listen to his radio show. It takes nerve and a backbone to stand up for yourself when you have been wronged. rotten tomatoes to Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. Talk is cheap. Now you are going to get tough on crime? Where were you in the last few years when people complained about crime? Sounds like more public spin for an election coming up. And when you talk about bylaw enforcement, that is the biggest joke of all. I have never met anyone who has been fined by the city and paid – especially rental properties full of druggies or grow-ops or unsightly properties. What a joke you are. ‘Live’ music backed by technology Pre-recorded tracks used by some bands as a way to keep up with the tastes of younger crowds
When you have musicians onstage that are playing off each other, there can be a real magic sometimes. When you’re playing with a click track, you pretty much take away any of that opportunity for magic.

CLOVERDALE — If you’re going to call yourself “Vancouver’s Hottest Cover Band,” you better be able to play everything. That’s what the guys in Hey Stewey strive for night after night. Formed out of the ashes of another cover band, Hey Stewey performs in venues throughout the Lower Mainland most Friday and Saturday nights, including Dublin Crossing in Cloverdale. With a song list that ranges from Guns N’ Roses to Katy Perry to Neil Diamond, the guys in the band hit a lot of targets, genre-wise. “You have to, because our clientele is constantly changing,” said guitarist Greg Engel. “A lot of younger people are starting to come out to the bars, and they want to hear the Robin Thicke, the Daft Punk. “At the same time, the older people that are still coming out want to hear the Journey, the AC/DC.” But how does a meat-and-potatoes rock ‘n’ roll band make the sound effects of a French DJ duo, or the disco production of “Blurred Lines?” That takes a bit of technology. “The new songs have a lot of backing tracks and electronic music,” said lead vocalist and keyboardist Wayne Debusscher,
Greg Engel (left) and Wayne Debusscher, one-half of the cover band quartet Hey Stewey, sometimes rely on samplers and sequencers to replicate current chart-topping hits at local venues, including Dublin Crossing in Cloverdale. (Photo: JACOB ZINN) the band’s lone Surrey member. “We use rhythm tracks for all the sound effects and electronic drums, things like that, a little bit for the keyboard sounds.” “That allows us to play a wider variety of music to appeal to everybody,” added Engel. The band has introduced a sampler for custom-built sounds and a sequencer to lay out backing tracks for hot-off-the-charts material that can’t be played on traditional instruments. (You won’t hear anything like this in “Dirty Deeds” or “Enter Sandman.”) The guys noted that the implementation is out of necessity: Many club owners recognize the need to draw younger customers, and having newer songs in your arsenal sets you apart from the numerous other cover bands in the area. “It’s a camaraderie between the bands, but it’s also very, very competitive,” said Debusscher. “And because there are so few venues to play, we have to keep upping our game to keep ourselves employable.” But Craig Olson, guitarist for The
Pop Junkies, has an alternative take on backtracks. He said his group, which performs covers and originals, tries to find a way to recreate the odd sounds live when they perform songs by Bruno Mars or other modern pop artists. “There’s very little being done nowadays that can’t be duplicated by musicians,” he said. “We kind of approach from the point of view that if we can’t perform it live as a band, we just don’t perform it.” Olson said performing with backtracks of a set length can detract from the freedom of going an extra few bars and improvising new solos. “When you have musicians onstage that are playing off each other, there can be a real magic sometimes. When you’re playing with a click track, you pretty much take away any of that opportunity for magic.” However, backtracks aren’t always used to replace different instruments in songs. Pete Barone, drummer of cover sextet Dr. Strangelove, said his band uses drum tracks
when they try to remain authentic to how certain songs were recorded. “‘Beat It’ by Michael Jackson originally starts with a drum machine and then real drums come on top, so when we do that song, we reproduce it like how they recorded it,” he said. “Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight’ starts with that 808 drum loop, and then that famous drum fill comes in later. In my mind, I want to recreate it like how he did it.” Both guys from Hey Stewey have seen their share of bands that lip-synch or mime to backing tracks – and they’re careful not to let technology take over the live element of their shows. They said more than 80 per cent of their set is live off the floor. “It can definitely get carried away,” said Debusscher. “I know some bands that started to rely heavier and heavier (on technology) until they got to the point that they’re, more or less, playing along with the actual songs. “Us being musicians at heart, we don’t want to be a karaoke play-along.” Still, to hold their weekly slots at venues throughout the city, they need to know how to play “Get Lucky.” That means the sampler and sequencer are here to stay. “We’re still an ’80s-style rock band,” said Debusscher. “We’re just trying to keep up with the Joneses.” jzinn@thenownewspaper.com

This year’s White Rock Social Justice Film Festival is dedicated to Jack McLachlan, the man who helped launch the event 10 years ago. The two-day festival will run from Feb. 28 to March 1 at First United Church in White Rock. McLachlan, co-founder of White Rock Social Justice Film Society’s first festival in 2005, died on Christmas Day, not long after being diagnosed with cancer. “Jack always hoped that our films would inform about the ‘evil that men do’ but, more importantly, that
Film poster for Searching for Sugar Man, a music documentary to be shown during White Rock Social Justice Film Festival. they would point to a way forward,” members of the film society stated. “The festival this year has the theme of ‘the activist’ – people who become activists and how it pans out,
what we can expect when we try to change the world.” Six films will be shown during the 10th-anniversary version of the festival, starting on the evening of Friday, Feb. 28, with Joseph Ohayon’s Crossroads: Labour Pains of a New Worldview. The films to be shown on Saturday, March 1 are Spoil (Trip Jennings’ exploration of the Great Bear Rainforest), Elemental, You Should Have Stayed Home (an examination of police tactics during the G20 conference in Toronto), Shift Change: True Stories of Dignified jobs in Democratic Workplaces and Searching for Sugar Man: The Greatest ’70s Rock Icon Who Never Was (about American musician Sixto Rodriguez and his activism in South Africa).

My ‘to do’ list includes plays like ‘Death and the Maiden’ This white-knuckle thriller is emotional, intellectual and questions democracy, justice and our role in it. e are well past the time to implement New Year’s resolutions, but don’t despair; Lee-Ann Regan of Rock Paper Scissors just sent me her fourth annual “to do” lists from people around the world. It’s not just the “to do” but also “to continue doing,” “to stop doing,” “to not do,” “to feel” and “to’odle” lists that make for inspirational reading. Here are some ideas of what you can put on your “to do” list, and the other ones as well:
TO DO
Things I want to start doing, being or having. This is easy. When I select theatre events that I want to go see, I tend to favour the frivolous and comedic. Escapists. So on my “to do” is to start including the heavier, more intense drama. Peninsula Productions is bringing a very intense political drama, Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden, to the Coast Capital Playhouse in White Rock.
TENT TRAILERS
TO CONTINUE DOING
White Rock Players is presenting its first musical that is not a pantomime. A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum runs until March 1 at the Coast Capital Playhouse. I hope the theatre company continues to put on at least one musical each year to add to its “list.” Mounting a musical is an ambitious and costly project for community theatre groups, and it will only work if ticket sales support the project. This show is a good beginning with some remarkable performances, and clear dedication from the crew in building sets, creating the costumes and providing props. Support the project. Continue doing.
TO FEEL
This is how you want to “feel” in the upcoming year. This takes some thought and discussion. Maybe some music will put you in the mood. The City of White Rock is
sponsoring a new Sunday-afternoon classical series, and the second concert is on Sunday, March 9, 3 p.m. start at First United Church, White Rock. Tickets are $25/$15, phone 604 541-2199. This concert features clarinetist Julian Milkis, who has been heralded as one of the world’s greatest clarinetists, and renowned concert pianist Eugene Skovorodnikov – absolutely world-class and extraordinary. Apparently the first concert of this series, on Feb. 2, was so well received, the audience gave three standing ovations.
TO DONE
Yes, this looks like a typo, but it isn’t. These are your accomplishments that you are proud of. Positive reinforcement. Metro Theatre has an amazing “to done” list. There Goes The Bride is the company’s 482nd production in 51 years. There is pay parking available, and the drive into Vancouver is sometimes worthwhile. Metro Theatre has just re-joined the Theatre BC family, and that is another nice thing – continue doing. There Goes The Bride runs until March 22. It is a musical comedy with plenty of song and dance.
TO STOP DOING
These are things that you have actually
tried to do, but they just didn’t work for you, so you no longer do them. Write them down, the things you won’t do anymore. Then throw away the list. For community theatre groups, I have something for your “To Stop Doing” list: Please do not send me press releases on Facebook. Whew, that would be a relief. Appreciate it.
TO NOT DO
You want to stay away from anything on this list. Like, do not text and drive, and do not use your smartphone during any live theatre event. No texting, no talking, no photos. I know you already know this, but it is still a good thing to put on your list.
TO’ODLE
This is what you can do when you need to let your mind wander and relax. Maybe a journey to Middle Earth would be perfect. Imagine That! Productions is presenting a musical adaptation of The Hobbit starting Feb. 28 at The Venue, 5709 Glover Rd., Langley. This student production should recapture some of the magic of these wonderful stories. Tickets are only $15; visit ImagineThatPlace.com for more details.

For Denture/Partial Wearers:
‘Paint the Town Red for ER’ gala May 3 at Centennial Arena WHITE ROCK — “Paint the Town Red for ER” is the title of the gala fundraiser for Peach Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation this spring. The Partners in Caring event will be held on Saturday, May 3, at Centennial Arena in White Rock. Since its inception in 1989, the yearly gala has raised an impressive $2.5 million for the hospital.
This year, the arena “ballroom” will be transformed into a dramatic sea of black, white and red, and guests are encouraged to wear those colours. All proceeds will benefit the emergency department at Peace Arch Hospital. The event will be emceed by Christopher Gaze, artistic director of Bard on the Beach theatre company in Vancouver. Sponsorship, auction donation and
volunteer opportunities are available. For details, call 604-535-4520 or email gala@pahfoundation.ca. Siobhan Philips and Louise McKnight are co-chairs of the event, which is presented by CIBC Wood Gundy. “This year’s event is shaping up to be our best ever in terms of the evening’s festivities, auction items and entertainment,” McKnight noted.

Fraser Health initiative
Campaign sheds light on mental health, substance use SURREY – It’s 6:30 a.m. and the alarm is ringing. Like many of us, “Mary” rolls over and hits snooze. Ten minutes later, the alarm rings again, but this time Mary doesn’t get up. Instead, she picks up the phone and calls in sick, unable to muster the strength to face yet another day. This is the third time this week she has missed work. Mary suffers from depression and is like more than 500,000 Canadians every day who miss work due to mental illness. Fraser Health is launching a social media campaign aimed at providing information and resource materials about mental health and substance use issues. “It is time to recognize this is not just something that happens to ‘them’,” says Andy Libbiter, interim executive director of mental health and substance use at Fraser Health. “Mental health and substance use issues impact our co-workers, our families, our friends, and our children. Through social media we can engage our communities in conversations about services, supports and on-going challenges.” During February, members of the public
are encouraged to follow Fraser Health on various social media, including Facebook and Twitter, for information and resources on issues ranging from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) to psychosis to addictions.

Honda opens the doors to 3D printing its cars – for free
DotComrade Christopher Poon Columnist
“You wouldn’t steal a car.” But I’d download one. In the early 2000s, internet piracy was a new and scary concept for nearly all sectors of entertainment media. People were slowly figuring out how to share digital copies of movies, music and video games, and the industries didn’t know what to do about it. Granted, much of those industries
still don’t know what to do about piracy, but as somebody in their 20s, I can remember one distinct (and hilarious) PSA that used to run on TV and DVDs about the effects of piracy. The PSA showed a girl on a computer downloading movies and then cuts to others being shown breaking into cars, stealing handbags, television sets and DVDs off a store shelf. We’re then reminded that downloading pirated films is stealing and that “piracy is a crime.” Compelling stuff. Anyhow, a decade later and peer-to-peer sharing
is simply a reality of life for the many of the people with computers. iTunes and several media companies have done good in getting people to cough up cash for digital copies of music, movies and television shows, and digital game downloading is a growing market. Of course, people still pirate the hell out of stuff, with HBO’s Game of Thrones being the most pirated show for two years running. In fact, when asked about the show being the top downloaded series for two years running, Time Warner
(parent company of HBO) CEO Jeff Bewkes said last summer that the numbers were a compliment, in a way. “I think you’re right that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world,” said Bewkes. “That’s better than an Emmy.” Well I guess that’s progress. Better than the “sue them all to hell” mantra that was heavily prevalent in the first part of the 2000s, an ideology still being employed by the MPAA. And now with the advent of 3D printing, that piracy is also moving into the world of physical items, with
people printing off their own weapons, household items and even toys. LEGO, the ever-popular but expensive building toy, was one of the earliest and most popular items “pirated” using 3D printers. Users are now able to print off any piece they desire and even make custom ones that work with the real deal. Companies have also started to experiment with 3D printing big-ticket items such as vehicle panels, and many of the classic vehicles in the most recent James Bond film were in fact 3D printed and then put onto a working chassis. Suddenly that whole downloading a car thing is becoming a reality and Honda is hopping on the shareware express by recently releasing 3D models of several of its cars for anyone to do with what they’d like. Looking to print your own Acura NSX concept? If you’ve got the means then you have Honda’s blessing. Of course, the chassis, engine and electronics all need to be sourced elsewhere — for now. But with Honda providing the models and HBO not being immediately upset over the piracy of their content, it shows the outlook of companies is evolving when it comes to data sharing and piracy. Where it goes from here is anybody’s guess.

Wildcats, Crusaders ready for Valley dogfight Michael Booth
and then dropped a do-or-die game in their next outing and missed the bus to the sport’s big dance. Wildcats coach Mike McKay said his boys have learned from that painful lesson and are heading into the Valleys determined it won’t happen again. “Our guys are a year older and much better prepared for the Valleys this time,” McKay said. “It’s not that we didn’t want to win last year, but the guys are much more focused now. They understand now how difficult it is to get out of the Valley and they’ve put in so much extra time this year that they’re playing at a whole other level. They’re much more mature this year and they know that even if they fall behind, they can still come back.”

We don’t look at it as a massive challenge because we know we don’t have to play every single team. The inaugural 2014 edition of the AAAA Fraser Valley tournament (the 4A class was introduced this season) began Wednesday night with preliminary round play. The full bracket hits the courts on Friday night with the round of 16. Holy Cross and Tamanawis will both be hosting early round games as a reward for winning their respective zones last week. In the Fraser Valley South zone final, Tamanawis topped Semiahmoo 83-60 behind a 31-point effort from Sukhjot Bains. The win was nice, but the Wildcats have their eyes focused on a bigger prize. “Winning the zone is nice, but the Valley tournament is a much bigger challenge,” McKay said. “We ended up with an OK draw. We play the winner of Lord Tweedsmuir and Panorama Ridge in our first game and we’ve played them both twice so we’re comfortable with that. It gets really interesting after that though. see CRUSADERS › page 38

The provincial championship tournament in any high school sport is a showcase of the best teams in the province. Unless you’re playing class AAAA senior boys basketball this year. When the provincial tourney gets underway at the Langley Events Centre next month, one thing is already set in stone — at least four of the top 15 teams in B.C. won’t be there. That’s because the Fraser Valley Conference, always a traditional hoops hotbed, is ridiculously deep this season. The current provincial rankings have eight Fraser Valley teams — Tamanawis (1), Holy Cross (3), Terry Fox (4), Walnut Grove (5), Sardis (7), Gleneagle (8), Pitt Meadows (9) and Heritage Woods (10) — ranked in the top 10 with Yale and Lord Tweedsmuir pegged as honourable mentions. And the down side of this embarrassment of basketball riches? There are only six provincial berths available for Fraser Valley schools. “The Fraser Valley is definitely very competitive and every game is critical,” said Holy Cross coach Matt LeChasseur. “We don’t look at it as a massive challenge because we know we don’t have to play every single team. We have a road laid out for us and our task is to win our first two games and reach the semifinal. If we can do that, we’re in the provincials and then we can worry about where we place. That’s our focus. “I know it’s hard to look past the strength of the conference, but our job is to play the teams in front of us and not make the task too overwhelming.” One team that knows first-hand the pitfalls of coming up flat in the Fraser Valley tournament is the top-ranked Tamanawis Wildcats. Last year the ‘Cats were ranked in the top five teams in the province with an eye on making some noise in the provincials. Instead, Tamanawis was upended in the quarter-finals of the Valleys

SPORTS Men’s soccer
Horsemen, Firemen advance Two Surrey men’s premier teams are still alive after the round of 16 of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s Imperial Cup playdowns last weekend. The Surrey United Firefighters and ICST Pegasus both posted wins and now advance to the quarter-final round this weekend. Pegasus finally posted a win, but it won’t help them in the league standings where they are currently teetering on the brink of relegation. The Horsemen picked up a shot of confidence when they prevailed over their Newton Athletic Park roommates CCB-RT United 2-1 on Friday night. Pegasus came out of the starting gate quickly as Goldie Takhar took advantage of a defensive error by United and scored in the first minute of play. Shortly before the break, the Horsemen doubled their lead when CJ Jhooty set up Reynold Stewart with a clever pass that led to the second Pegasus marker. In the second half, United pushed back with considerable effort and were rewarded in the 60th minute when Bobby Jhutty cut the Pegasus lead in half. CCB-RT pushed hard for the equalizer over the final 30 minutes, but solid scoring chances by Jhutty, Milad Rahmati and Navid Mashinchi were methodically turned aside by Pegasus keeper
Amar Dhinsa. On Saturday in Cloverdale, defending provincial champion Surrey United Firefighters had little trouble eliminating the first division’s Richmond Hibernians by a 4-0 scoreline. Richmond actually took the game to the Firemen in the early stages of the opening half, but their efforts came up empty thanks to fine play by Surrey keeper Paul Shepherd. After weathering the early storm, the Firemen wrested control of the proceedings in the 35th minute when Reece Miles headed home a wellplaced cross from Vince Stewart. The score stayed at 1-0 for Surrey through the halftime break, but the Firemen quickly put the game out of reach in the final 45 minutes of play. Angus Burke got the ball rolling when he converted a Vince Stewart pass in the 55th minute. The Hibs threw defensive caution aside in search of a goal to get back into the game, but the strategy proved costly as Colin Streckmann and Goran Vitic each scored for Surrey to put the game out of reach. Quarter-final round of Imperial Cup play will take place this weekend. Surrey United will host Inter on Friday at 8:45 p.m. at Cloverdale Athletic Park while Pegasus welcomes Westside to Newton the same evening at 8:30 p.m.

Boys’ basketball
Crusaders’Valley approach is play one game at a time ‹ from page 36 “There’s a lot of good teams out there and you can’t project who will advance. It’s going to be a real battle because if you lose your quarter-final game on Monday, then you have to win three games in a row just to get back into contention for a spot in the provincials.” The Wildcats will host the winner of Wednesday’s clash between Lord Tweedsmuir and Panorama Ridge on Friday at 7:45 p.m. Meanwhile across town in Fleetwood, the Holy Cross Crusaders had a much tougher time of it against the scrappy North Surrey Spartans. The heavily favoured Crusaders shook off the effects of a nasty flu bug in time to secure a 73-71 win.
Holy Cross guard Taylor Browne was named the MVP. “Winning the zone was a good result for us,” LeChasseur said. “The flu bug has been going through our team and we were missing a few guys for the final. North Surrey played really well though; they’re a tough team. “The biggest thing is by winning the zone we get to host the first three rounds of the Fraser Valleys and that’s where our focus is now.” Holy Cross will host the winner of Wednesday’s game between Mouat and Enver Creek on Friday at 7:45 p.m. Quarter-final round games will go Monday evening. Display samples – more than meets the eye. Whether or not it is intentional is a mystery to us all, but I’ll let you in on a little secret. When flooring manufacturers make samples for in-store displays, they seem to have a tendency to only use the “Best” pieces. For example, say a specific species of wood has a lot of knots or other natural imperfections in the grain; those flaws might not be shown in the samples. Wood is a natural material, and certain types of flaws are unavoidable, and samples should only be used as a general guide for colour, and style.”

How ‘live’ is live music? Pre-recorded tracks are becoming more common during ‘live’ shows. But does that mean it’s OK?
