Community kitchen to become self-sustainable pacific community church looks to hire a co-ordinator to run and grow the kitchen’s operations amy reid
now staff twitter @amyreid87
surreY — pacific community church is inviting the community to a forum to hear an update on the cloverdale community Kitchen, an initiative aimed at serving those in need. the meeting, set for thursday, nov. 13, will share information with the public about plans for the commercially-equipped kitchen to become self sustaining now that it’s up and running. “the kitchen is called cloverdale community Kitchen because it’s truly cloverdale’s kitchen,” said Jim heuving, executive pastor with the church. “we want it to be used to address poverty and homelessness in cloverdale... and we think
it happens around food. it’s not the answer for everything, but it’s a great starting point.” heuving said many people associate homelessness with the whalley area, but stressed there is a need in cloverdale. he explained the agricultural land reserve serves as somewhat of a barrier. “there are particular needs to our little locality,” he said, noting langley has a significant amount of resources, while cloverdale has few. the church embarked upon the kitchen project after recognizing the need to tackle poverty in the area. roughly 10 years ago, a grassroots initiative called monday night café began with a small number of people reaching out to homeless and marginalized people in langley. in early 2012, an attempt was made to hold such a program in cloverdale, using the church as a base. meanwhile, the existing kitchen serving the poor in cloverdale, run by the cloverdale christian fellowship, was closed down as the mall used for their operation was demolished for future development. it became evident to the church that a qualified kitchen was needed, and after
We want it to be used to address poverty and homelessness in Cloverdale. fundraising $400,000 and completing construction in december 2013, the kitchen now serves more than 100 meals a week, run by a variety of groups. now that the church has been able to build the kitchen, it’s hoped it can become a “self-sustaining operation,” noted heuving. the church hired B agile consulting to explore the next steps. those recommendations will be shared during the upcoming meeting and include hiring a co-ordinator to develop and manage the operation. the co-ordinator would expand meal programming, work with the community, develop fundraising models in addition to running and building on the kitchen’s operations. the church hopes to hire someone in the next couple of months. from last december to august, the kitchen cost just shy of $20,000 to operate, including administration, maintenance and
supplies. cloverdale’s coldest night of the Year run in february, which raised roughly $64,000 for the kitchen this year, is planned as an annual fundraiser to keep the kitchen afloat. the church hopes to raise as much or more next february. other funding goals include a partnership with the surrey homelessness and housing society, grants and self-funding mechanisms through catering and meals-on-wheels alternatives. in addition to helping address needs in the area, the church hopes the kitchen will also cultivate sustainable social enterprise models to provide employment and skill training through “food-centric” initiatives. it’s envisioned as a networking hub for community partnerships, social enterprise and community resources. to learn more about the kitchen’s future, or to get involved, attend the forum on nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the church, located at 5337 180th st. meanwhile, the church is in the midst of organizing its annual cloverdale christmas hamper program. last year, the program provided 250 families with gifts and enough food to last for one month. to get involved, visit pacificcommunity.ca.

LaPs announces specialty centre for sick cats roxanne hooper
langley advance twitter @langleyadvance
lanGleY — it was Ken mcBride’s first time at the furry tail endings gala on nov. 1, but the walnut Grove retiree insists it will not be his last. the night will forever be engrained in his memory, in large part because he was recognized as one of the most outstanding volunteers for langley animal protection society. But it didn’t hurt that mcBride and his wife charmaine also won a $5,000 dream vacation anywhere. the laps travel lottery culminated with the draw at this weekend’s gala, and helped raise $14,000 towards the night’s fundraising, said sean Baker, executive director of the langley animal protection society. “i’m just so glad that Ken won, not just because he’s an incredible volunteer and does so much for us, but just because i think he and his wife will really appreciate the trip,” Baker said. mcBride, 70, and his wife were still undecided last week as to where they’d travel with the money, but mcBride said
he might return to his homeland of north ireland for a visit. mcBride took up walking dogs a few times a week for laps. while the dog lover enjoyed his volunteer duties, he felt he could do more. flash forward a few years, and he strolled into the shelter manager’s office in 2007, pitching the idea of distributing collection cans to businesses around town that would encourage people to part with their spare change for the sake of the animals. “i must admit that my initial reaction was not entirely positive,” Baker said. “i had been approached by others in the past with great ideas, but that was all they were willing to contribute. they had the ideas and wanted me to do the work. But my mood quickly changed when (mcBride) said the magical words that any manager loves to hear, ‘i will do all the work’.” mcBride offered to organize the cans and “pound the pavement” to promote the cause. “so, with nothing to lose, i agreed to his idea, shook his hand, and wished him the best of luck. and, as he left my office, i did not expect to see him again.” one month later, he was back in Baker’s
office with $500. “i didn’t know what to say,” Baker said. since that first month, the dollar value gradually increased. he now hands in “eight crisp $100 bills” each month and is credited with raising more than $65,000 in spare change. “that is truly outstanding,” Baker said, calling mcBride “amazing.” “Ken mcBride, i would like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize for ever doubting you,” Baker said, presenting him with the new lifetime fundraiser award. “it is a special award that is meant to honour a very special laps volunteer who has truly done something extraordinary.” mcBride shrugs off attention, saying he loves contributing. it takes him about six to eight hours a week to distribute and collect the cans from 15 locations around town, as well as count and roll the coin. “i sure wasn’t anticipating any award... i’d continue doing it, whether i get an award or not,” he said, hoping to keep it up for another 20 years, at least. it’s also his goal, mcBride said, to raise a quarter-million dollars “before i leave this earth.” he’s “very appreciative” of the award,
and said it has already been given a place of honour on his fireplace mantel, amid his family photos. the seventh annual laps gala, according to Baker, was the “most successful” to date. “our net for the whole event, including the raffle, is approximately $105,000,” he said. “this is a new record for us.” the money is earmarked for a new, freestanding building dedicated solely to the care of sick cats requiring isolation. the cat “iso oasis,” as it has been dubbed, will cost upwards of $400,000 and given the money raised directly from gala tickets, auctions, and 50/50, Baker said monday that laps appears to already be a third of the way there – maybe more, he said. on nov. 1, a number of individuals and business owners on hand also pledged money to help build the new centre. that money had not been calculated into the fundraiser total, but Baker estimated it could be another $50,000, at least. two years ago, laps introduced the concept of a new building on the aldergrove site that could help cats, but Baker didn’t know exactly what that should look like at the time.

Wine tasting festival celebrates 25 years in style Troy Landreville
langley advance twitter @langleyadvance
lanGleY — like the vino that the annual celebration revolves around, the fraser valley wine tasting festival seems to get better with age. the 25th edition of the festival at the willowbrook shopping centre hit a whole new level on nov. 1, both in terms of attendance and money raised. for the second time in the festival’s history, it sold out with more than 1,000 tickets sold. early estimates have more than $70,000 raised, and that may rise to close to $80,000 once the final fundraising total is tabulated. proceeds will go to autism society
of B.c., access Youth outreach services society (formerly pocomo Youth services society) and focus Bc, which helps troubled youth with education and therapy. autism society of B.c. has been around since 1974 and is a parentbased and parent-directed society providing support to individuals with autism and their families. organized by rotary club of langley central, the event has raised more than $800,000 for local charities since its humble beginnings in 1989, when the inaugural festival at the George preston recreation centre raised a modest $900. “it’s going very, very well,” club president Guy tousingant said at roughly 7:30 p.m., early on at the

bCLC antes up less casino cash, leading to revised revenue expectations lanGleY — casino revenue for langley city are down $215,000 this year. the city’s take is $16,000 higher than budgeted for the third quarter of 2014 but the amounts for the rest of the year are off. the previous two quarters (January to march and april to June) were down, so the net drop for the year so far is about $215,000. the city budgeted $5.75 million for 2014, and is on course to make about $5.5 million this year. “we will be building the 2015 based on that funding source,” city corporate services director darrin leite told city council on nov. 3. the lower revenues through cascades casino are part of a downward trend as the province allows more gaming. the city received $6.73 million in 2009, $6.565 million in 2010, $5.94 in 2011, $5.92 in 2012, $5.78 in 2013 and $5.53 in 2014. another factor in the reduced revenue, the city discovered, was generous severance for Bc lottery corp. management. it meant a $170,000 reduction in the first quarter. the city sought an explanation from Bclc and was told it was due to a restructuring initiative. payouts to communities were down by about $25 million earlier this year. coun. dave hall wants to get a better sense of what’s going on in gaming. “do we anticipate bringing the casino people in [before the next budget]?” he asked. “we’re really dependent on their successes or relapses.” staff will ask for a meeting.

gala. tousingant called the festival, “the social event of langley.” “every year, i’m surprised at the amount of people who attend and this year is overwhelming,” added tousingant. “the response has been just incredible.” the festival featured 38
wine merchants offering more than 200 types of wines from all over the world for local oenophiles (a.k.a. wine enthusiasts) to sample. club members John morgan and david taft chaired the festival. morgan offered a “big thank you” to diamond
50
sponsor, Bdo dunwoody, which he noted has donated $90,000 to the event over the past six years. morgan was thrilled after the event. “we’ve got an awesome committee,” he said. “members have been doing this for so many years and we’d never be able to pull
this off without their help. i’m absolutely ecstatic with the success we had this year. this is the most we’ve ever raised. this event also wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community and the local restaurants that were involved.” langley advance

meet the candidates
we asked each civic election candidate in our readership area – surrey, white rock and delta – to submit a written response to one question, in 100 words or less: WHY SHOULD PEOPLE VOTE FOR YOU? their responses, unedited except for length, are published throughout this edition of the Now and also online at thenownewspaper.com. surrey mayoral candidates john wolanski:
“never look down on a man unless you’re giving him a hand up.” - reverend Jesse Jackson there are a lot of people struggling in our city, just to survive. the working man, the John Wolanski small businessman needs help, and policies to address this must be implemented. opportunities for all, not just a few, a fair deal for all. i want to create a civic society based on kindness and respect. that’s why i want to be mayor.
vikram bajwa:
in 2011 there was less than 25% voter polling, we ended up with 87 % residents feeling unsafe. You as resident need to vote in 2014, to elect a leader, who can reverse the % and vikram bajwa make surrey a vibrant multiculture capital of canada, not a crime capital or auto-theft capital. surrey first failed in public safety, surrey safe record is open and one surrey is an opportunist. vote independent mayor. vote independent council. take back surrey.
john edwards:
demonstrated leadership and
management experience as: past president and board member of rotary club of surrey, recipient of a rotary paul harris fellowship for excellence in community engagement John edwards with several city organizations including, surrey food Bank, city of surrey, fraser health, community living Bc, fire department, down’s syndrome societies, people with disabilities and employment access projects. several years of senior management experience in some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. healthcare/Business background with extensive experience negotiating with ministries of health in all canadian provinces, us state departments of health, department of indian affairs, australia, the middle east and the uK.
doug mccallum (safe surrey coalition):
i believe that surrey needs to get back to simple government that provides good services for residents within a responsible doug mcCallum fiscal framework. public safety is at the top of my priority list. surrey immediately requires more rcmp and bylaw officers for an increased presence on our streets. Greater public transparency and investment in tackling the root causes of crime are also necessary. surrey needs
a strong champion for transportation investment from the federal and provincial governments, and an end to wasteful spending at city hall. as the former mayor, i will bring experience and leadership back to the city.
barinder rasode (incumbent councillor, one surrey):
one surrey will make our city the safest in canada. our plan was developed by canada’s longestbarinder rasode serving police chief and can be implemented immediately. we’ll hire more police, and 200 community safety officers, who’ll be working by 2015 or we’ll take a 10% pay cut. we’ll tackle the root causes of crime, and help those with mental health and addiction issues. we’ll cut spending by 1%, because we can’t keep raising taxes and incurring debt to cover costs. we’ll manage growth responsibly by launching a new program for development and environmental protection. and, we’ll reduce congestion and connect all town centres with rapid transit. working together, we can build a safe and prosperous city: onesurrey.ca.
grant rice:
i have appeared before council for twelve years, advocating for environmental protection, better transparency, and fiscal responsibility. i was the president of a community association in whalley for eight years, and i continue to offer advice and support to
other organizations throughout surrey. i’ve developed a profound understanding of the practises of surrey’s numerous departments. i have management experience in the Grant rice private, public and not for profit sectors. my education includes a Bachelor of commerce, and a master of urban studies from sfu. my plan to protect and improve surrey, now, and for future generations can be found at Grantrice.ca.
linda hepner (incumbent councillor, surrey first):
i’m running because while we have done a lot to make our city better, there’s still more to do. i have Linda hepner a comprehensive, expert-led strategy to fight crime with 147 more police, a secure mental health facility and targeted programs for prolific offenders. i’ll deliver light rail by 2018, and continue our success of balanced, inclusive growth. a resident of surrey for 29 years, i’ve served surrey for 20 years in numerous positions including as manager of economic development before being elected to council in 2005. i represent surrey on the metro vancouver Board and the federation of canadian municipalities.

my name is merv Bayda and i am asking for the privilege to serve as your city councilor. i am proud to be part of Barinder rasode’s one surrey team, we have a merv bayda proven plan in place to make surrey one of the safest cities in canada. only 13% of the people in surrey feel safe. recently released statistics indicate that crime is on the rise. this is not what other politicians are telling you. when you do not feel safe, nothing else matters. it is time for change at city hall and the one surrey team has the answer.
kal dosanjh (one surrey):
i believe that the power to vote is a power to institute change. my occupation as a law enforcement officer over the course of 15 years allowed me to connect with youth. i embraced my social responsibility of serving our community by developing and running hundreds of youth empowerment programs. it was a call of duty which took me
into law enforcement, but its a call of passion which takes me to the steps of city hall. with one voice we must tackle the social issues of crime, poverty and homelessness. i will lead with integrity, honor, and compassion.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE IN THIS ELECTION But, Only One Puts Surrey First! The Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) belongs to the people of Surrey. It develops city-owned land and pays a dividend to our city that helps fund more police, parks, pools, arts facilities, and community rec centres. It also puts the interests of Surrey residents ahead of developers. Doug McCallum wants to eliminate the Surrey City Development Corporation. Linda Hepner and the Surrey First Team say he’s wrong.
Here’s What the Choice Means KEEP – SCDC
ELIMINATE – SCDC Selling off public land to developers is shortsighted Millions in revenues to the city will be gone Reduces funding for new police Reduces funding for new parks, pools, community and rec centres
✓ Protects Surrey’s lands in perpetuity ✓ Surrey’s residents come first as we invest in our community ✓ Provides valuable revenue stream to the City ✓ Keeps property taxes lowest in the region ✓ More money for new police ✓ More money for new parks, pools, community and rec centres
On November 15, don’t turn back the clock. Keep Surrey moving forward.
Vote for Linda Hepner and the Surrey First Team.

brian young (one surrey):
public safety is of paramount importance to residents and business alike - without this we don’t have a successful city. transparency needs to occur in all brian young aspects of our city! as Block watch captain, i was not informed that property crime nearly doubled until after the quarter had finished. public safety
should be public information, not reserved for the privileged. i believe that all city centres should be treated equally with the list of amenities and projects driven by the community, not dictated by the city. onesurrey was created to give you a voice, please use it on november 15th.
rick scorsese:
as a surrey resident and a small business developer, i am passionate about fueling small business owners and entrepreneurs with tax incentives, educational tools rick scorsese and city support. further, as a professional having worked in hospitality, utilities and transportation, i will bring my 15+ years of education and experience in to the city hall making transportation efficiency, crime reduction and entrepreneurship top priorities. in addition, i will replace the ineffective police committee with a much more practical, unified system with free information flow that will include your neighborhood participation in reducing crime.

civic election 2014 meet the candidates
surrey council (cont.) stephen gammer (teamsurrey):
i am a life long surrey resident having graduated from lord tweedsmuir. i am passionate about our city, its people and our future. after over a decade of one party rule we want to see balance, safety, and simplicity stephen Gammer returned to city hall. we want to restore the process of decision making to the people of surrey instead of for friends and insiders. team surrey will be there to ask the tough questions, hold people’s feet to the fire and help restore people’s faith in our city hall. on november 15 please save 2 votes for teamsurrey
brenda locke (teamsurrey):
we love surrey – my family has lived here for more than 35 years. we have seen tremendous growth in our city, but infrastructure has not kept pace with that growth. transportation, social services, recreational services and especially policing and public safety need serious and immediate attention. we can and must do better. for more than a decade, council has
“Our business is really heating up!”
been dominated by one-party rule. that is not good for surrey and our infrastructure deficits are a result. i have experience as a former mla, minister and businesswoman. teamsurrey will ask the tough questions and bring balance to council.

jim mcmurtry:
i am opposed to a council hand-picked in the mayor’s living room, a $395,412 salary for a city manager, a “white elephant” city hall that was part of municipal expenses rising 16% last year, richard Branson Jim mcmurtry getting $420,000 at surrey’s regional economic summit, the mayor making $150,000 of which one-third is tax-free, a million in uncapped contributions to surrey first at election time, and free trips for politicians to england, india, china, colombia, italy and puerto rico. if the surrey circus is to remain the same each year, at least the clowns should change. fight repeat offenders – don’t re-elect them!

civic election 2014
meet the candidates
surrey council candidates (cont.) gary hoffman:
my name is Gary hoffman. i have lived in surrey for many years. i have worked for Government and in a small business environment. i believe that surrey can continue to grow Gary hoffman and become a better place. we need responsible growth that will also incorporate the expansion of our infrastructure. i recognize vital issues such as roads and transit need to be addressed, but i believe that it is essential to maintain effective, efficient government, without program cuts, unnecessary tax increases, or fees. i believe in spending our tax dollars responsibly, and doing this job with honesty, integrity, and accountability.
rina gill (safe surrey coalition):
i am an entrepreneur who is very passionate about surrey and all of the potential it has to offer residents. this belief is something that i bring to volunteering rina Gill my time with a range of organizations working to contribute positively to the broader community. i am running for city council with the safe surrey coalition because crime, irresponsible use of taxpayers’ money and political aspirations are getting in the way of good government that is about the people. i am fighting for public safety to be the number one priority at city hall and for immediate action to be taken.
beau simpson (safe surrey coalition):
as an awardwinning journalist in surrey for the past seven years, i understand the challenges we face during this important beau simpson time in our history. that’s why i chose to put my career as editor on hold to run for council. for far too long, i have watched our communities buckle under immense pressures that an out-of-touch city hall has placed them under. citizens want safer communities, better transit, a ward system and a fiscally responsible government, one that doesn’t waste $150m on a new city hall. more than anything, they want strong leaders who will restore public confidence in surrey. please vote for Beau simpson and the safe surrey coalition.
justin thind (safe surrey coalition):
my family and i have lived in many
neighbourhoods across surrey. one of the most surprising things that i have seen is the way that city hall currently favours certain areas over others. this is completely wrong, as every resident has the Justin Thind same right to good services and elected officials who listen to their concerns. the safe surrey coalition is about bringing back simple government. on public safety, we need immediate leadership, focus and action. politics can be very self serving. i am motivated differently, and am running to truly give back to a city that i l love.
laurie guerra (safe surrey coalition):
i am a mother of five children, and i am proud to say that i have raised my family in the wonderful city of surrey. however, becoming a Block Laurie Guerra watch captain in my neighbourhood of fleetwood really awakened me to the problems of crime that all residents encounter, and the gaps that exist in maintaining public safety. i have joined the safe surrey coalition because i believe in public service, particularly when it comes to our community. it is time to get away from politics by bringing commitment, dedication and most importantly action back to city hall.
shawn francis:
heavy duty mechanic. 3 top issues: 1. crime reduction 2. increased public safety 3. more transportation services. first, i would increase the number of police officers to comparable levels to shawn Francis our neighbouring municipalities. second, i would examine and implement strategies for crime prevention. like expanding community watch programs, after school outreach programs, and forcing the demolition of derelict and abandoned properties. third, i would work towards crime reduction, by cooperating with our community partners to reduce poverty in our most vulnerable neighbourhoods. and finally, transportation is the cornerstone to a healthy and vibrant community.
judy villeneuve (incumbent, surrey first):
i care about making surrey a welcoming, safe and inclusive city that is the best place to find a home, access a good education
Judy villeneuve
and nurture a family and build a business. i believe in protecting our environment and vulnerable residents, and i feel that with surrey first i can advocate for those priorities. a resident of surrey for 44 years and surrey’s longest serving councillor first elected 25 years ago, i serve as chair of the social policy committee, the public art advisory committee and metro regional culture committee where i strive to expand art and cultural appreciation.
tom gill (incumbent, surrey first):
i believe that candidates have a primary responsibility to respect taxpayers by holding the line on tax increases and investing tax dollars wisely. as a Tom Gill chartered professional accountant, and an elected councillor since 2005, i am proud of the high standard that is set by council, while ensuring that property taxes remain low and maintain the lowest per capita spending in the lower mainland. first elected in 2005 and the current finance chair, i am a founding director of the surrey homelessness and housing society, a director of the healthcare Benefit trust, and cfo for coast mental health.
bruce hayne (incumbent, surrey first):
as a member of council since 2011, i have been involved in many of the changes that you see in surrey today. i want to see surrey’s economy bruce hayne continue to grow through private investment and a climate that promotes innovation. i believe our city has achieved so much over the last 10 years under the leadership of mayor watts and i know that there’s still more to do. an entrepreneur and surrey resident since 1993, i was elected in 2012 and serve as chair of the environmental sustainability advisory committee and as chair of the innovation and investment committee.
barbara steele (incumbent, surrey first):
surrey first has delivered strong, effective and cohesive leadership which i want to see continue. i’ll work hard to ensure we make surrey barbara steele a city where citizens of all ages have a safe, high quality of life. as a city we are respected and i will work hard to keep this image of surrey alive. a surrey resident for 32 years and a councillor since 1998, i am past president of the union of Bc municipalities and currently represent surrey at the metro vancouver Board. i serve on the boards of the pacific parklands
foundation and the fraser Basin council.
mary martin (incumbent, surrey first):
a resident of this city for the past 25 years, i feel blessed to live in such a dynamic city and as a councillor i am honoured to mary martin serve its residents. with a career in the healthcare industry, i bring a passion and understanding of the importance of health to a high quality of life for all. a surrey resident for nearly 25 years and a councillor since 2005, i serve as the diversity and inclusivity advisory committee chair, chair of the community health programs committee and on numerous boards including surrey memorial hospital foundation and centre for child development.
vera lefranc (surrey first):
i’ve had a passion for community service since i was young, and i believe that i can make a difference in government to help create a safe, inclusive vera LeFranc and sustainable community here in surrey. as a manager with canada’s largest credit union, i bring business discipline with a social conscience for a balance problem solving approach. a surrey resident since 1998, i’ve provided leadership in developing the surrey homelessness and housing society where i’ve worked with the board and foundation. i helped develop the surrey poverty reduction strategy in cooperation with the poverty reduction coalition.
mike starchuk (surrey first):
a resident of surrey for over 50 years, i have an immense passion for the city of surrey. my goal is to help build and maintain a city that mike starchuk is safe, clean, and affordable and those people that choose to live, play and work in the city are kept safe. i had the honour of serving with the surrey fire department for 32 years, retiring in 2014 as chief fire prevention officer. i was a founding member of the surrey fire fighters charitable society and was awarded the Queen’s diamond Jubilee medal in 2013. obi canuel:
dear surrey: if any of you struggle to pay the rent, or live paycheck to paycheck, or wait for the bus to take you to work, then you have no representatives on council. Your obi Canuel mayor made more than $130,000 last year, and these folks are supposed to represent you and your interests. instead, wealthy land developers donated $676,283 to their campaign in 2011. i’m only here to point out the problem. do not vote for me, because i will do nothing but donate 2/3rds of my bloated salary to charity. although it can’t get any worse, so why not?
james duncan:
my name is James duncan and i am running for surrey council as an independent. i have worked as a construction contractor and jobsite security for many James duncan years. i would like to change transit fines. also, health care can be improved. thank you.

as mayor for the past three years, i feel i have demonstrated my capability and competence, and have done a good job for our citizens. i believe in: accountability Wayne baldwin and common sense; maintaining the unique character of white rock; preserving the single family neighbourhoods; minimizing taxes and controlling spending; purchasing the water

david bradshaw:
a vote for david Bradshaw is a vote for: community first in all matters, an end to monster homes ( height & size), strict compliance with the david bradshaw official community plan, train relocation, all citizens being treated with care & compassion, affordable housing for seniors, taxation relief, support for small businesses, returning city hall to the community, transparent epcor purchase, proactive management as opposed to “crisis” management, increased support for the creative arts community, new tax on absentee owners.
White rock council candidates mike hornak:
i believe in engaging the city of white rock community for our future. my personal thoughts are: what do we, the residents of white rock want to preserve, and mike hornak what do we need to change to create a successful future? i have witnessed many changes in white rock over the years, but as a resident, i want to be part of creating effective change not just watching it happen. i live in white rock, and as a councilor i would be assisting in making decisions on issues that will affect us as residents. vote mike hornak nov 15.
dennis lypka:

margaret woods:
so often i hear “we came to white rock to get away from the big city, we came for the white rock way of life.” it is appalling to see people, who have lived here for margaret Woods 20, 30 and 40 years, literally being taxed out of their homes: monster houses: trees being cut down: our once beautiful water being chlorinated and hi-rise after hi-rise. Besides being a certified General accountant and forensic auditor, i am a provider of solutions: common sense, attainable and affordable solutions. there are many issues, but i can only tell you, that i will do everything in my power to help bring back the white rock way of life.
helen fathers (incumbent):
this election is of vast importance. we need to decide our future and be in the position to plan accordingly. we need wisdom and community minded helen Fathers independent thinkers at the council table making decisions that represent your voice. i do not take
donations from developers to finance any part of my election campaign. i represent the residents of white rock and their interests. i am honoured to have served on council for the last six years and would love the opportunity to continue. thank you for all your support over the last two terms. please re-elect helen fathers on nov 15.
bill lawrence (incumbent, white rock coalition):
i would first like to encourage everyone who is entitled to vote, to go vote this nov 5, 6, 12, or 15th. the events bill Lawrence of october 22nd make it plain and clear that democracy isn’t easy; and those who protect us, also defend the freedoms we often take for granted. for those in the past, and those who have recently fallen while preserving our way of life...we owe it to them to go and vote this election. my goal is to always make white rock an even better place to live and work. Get the “vote Bill” phone app.
megan knight (white rock coalition):
grant meyer (incumbent, white rock coalition):
we all enjoy the beautiful city we live in and the high quality of life we have become accustomed to here in white rock. the megan Knight challenge if elected is to maintain and enhance this. i feel strongly that we need to lobby the provincial government for a major expansion of the peace arch hospital. we also need to work towards maintaining our safe city and that all tax dollars are being accounted for and used wisely.
lynne sinclair (white rock coalition): if elected, i will listen to the public and ensure openness and transparency at city hall, not making significant decisions without
Lynne sinclair
first engaging the public on matters such as Johnston road and the official community plan. i believe arts and culture are essential to a healthy community and a key ingredient of our economic prosperity through cultural tourism. i am a proud supporter of the 92-bed expansion of the evergreen Baptist campus of care. this means seniors can remain in their community, near their families, and it brings jobs to our community and fraser health dollars to our economy and increases our commercial tax base.
we have an upcoming review of the official community plan, we need to ensure and encourage Grant meyer consultation and involvement from every corner of the city and from as many people as possible. our rate of growth has been slow, and that’s fine. we don’t need rapid growth like some cities, we need new developments to be of the highest quality. anything less won’t be considered. white rock has a highly desired “Quality of life” and is an extremely safe city, i will work my hardest so that it stays one of the best cities in British columbia.
cliff annable (white rock coalition):
as executive director of the chamber of commerce, and a long time successful businessman i know what takes Cliff annable to ensure that we keep our city’s financial house in order. we need to spend the taxpayers’ money wisely and effectively, and to strengthen the city’s economic base. the population in neighbouring communities is rapidly growing. i am committed to lobbying the provincial government for an expansion of the peace arch hospital. white rock’s youth population is rapidly increasing. we need to add more programs for them, and to improve recreational amenities such as a second sheet of ice at centennial arena.
our Commitment to you
as a citizen of white rock, i am passionate about our seaside community and that we maintain a high quality of life for our citizens, now doug hart and in the future. a key priority for me is to provide certainty to the community on a strong vision and direction for the city. my corporate, finance and governance background will provide sound decision making on council. as president of Burns Bog conservation foundation, vp of tourism white rock and director of seniors come share society, i will advocate to protect our environment and shoreline, promote tourism and help seniors maintain their independence.
alan campbell (incumbent):
fellow citizens. there is no school or college that can prepare anyone for the job of a city councillor. it’s incredible what comes out of left alan Campbell field. i have served the citizens of white rock for two terms (six years). during that time i have been involved in all the very important everyday issues that make us function. as a council we cannot please all, the hope is that i made the right calls. i would like to take my knowledge and involvement to a third term of four years. time will tell. Que sera sera.

david chesney:
i believe i will make a great representative on council for the residents of white rock. i have a high profile in the community through my volunteer work as well as being the david Chesney editor/publisher of the white rock sun www.whiterocksun. com. i know the issues. i am aware of the challenges we face as a community as we look forward to the next 4 years. rail safety, responsive government, sticking to the ocp and building an arts community are the pillars of my platform. i will continue to be as visible as i am if not more so. that is whY i thinK people should vote for me
ross haugland:
all of us candidates run with similar campaign promises -- controlled development, cost management, property tax limits, etc. what is different about ross haugland me is that unlike most of the other candidates i bring both
a formally educated and an in-business practicum to the council. i hold a financial mgmt diploma, Bachelor of Business administration degree (BBa), and am a certified professional purchaser (cpp). as president of a communications company, i have spent the last decade at the strategic level. i bring a strong financially trained background to the council, something our current council is missing. note: white rock council candidates sheila hunter-tubic and darcy sangster did not submit responses to the Now.
delta council candidates johann ackermann (delta connect):
i have worked the last 38 years in the financial field, volunteered in the community and with my wife, raised two Johann ackermann sons in delta. i was also involved in community crime watch for 16 years. i want to put this experience to work for my fellow residents in all of delta to keep it a healthy vibrant place that our children want to stay and retire in. we need to think outside of the box and work with our neighbours to make this happen. check out my video on www.deltaconnect. ca and vote for Johann ackermann for delta council.

delta council candidates (cont.)
ian paton (incumbent, delta independent voters association):
robert campbell (incumbent, delta independent voters association):
i bring a wealth of enthusiasm, expertise and experience to the position of councillor. my leadership as chair of parks recreation and culture commission has resulted community improvements such robert Campbell as the ongoing expansion at north delta recreation centre, sungod weight room expansion, and the dennis elsom artificial turf field. i value delta’s community infrastructure and it is my goal to ensure we in delta have the best facilities and community amenities. i have supported mayor Jackson’s debt free delta and we have worked to provide quality services for delta without incurring any new debt. Your vote for me is a vote for a better delta.
i’ve been on delta council for 4 years and have enjoyed a great working relationship with mayor Jackson, city staff, and my fellow councillors. i’m proud to say i have been a resident of delta my entire life and still reside on the family farm Ian Paton that my grandfather purchased in the 1940’s. my vision as a councillor is to bring a common sense approach to issues, with the knowledge and financial practicality of a self-employed farmer and business owner. improving transportation corridors, preserving the
character of certain neighbourhoods and revitalization of others, as well as supporting farmers and retaining viable farmland are 3 important goals of mine.
heather king:
i am innovative. i was the only candidate to propose an answer to development on Burns Bog by suggesting a land swap between paterson park (ladner) and this proposal on Bog lagg land thereby preserving the bog and adding housing beside transit, delta hospital continued on page 16
SHARING MY WISH WITH SANTA.
rod binder (delta independent voters association):
using my experience as a director on Boards and delta committees, we will ensure delta stays on track and continues to grow. transportation – safe, efficient movement of people and goods is vital. mayor Jackson’s support of the massey tunnel rod binder replacement project was one of the reasons i accepted her offer to join the d.i.v.a. team. must keep continued pressure on translink to support south of the fraser communities. scott road – using incentives, working with landowners and businesses, revitalize this street as outlined in the north delta area plan. protect Bog and farm land. complete platform can be viewed at votediva.ca.

The average woman applies more than 500 chemicals to her body every day.
Deodorant
Every day millions of women slap on body moisturizer, apply lipstick or mascara without a second thought about what they are putting on their skin. A study from the UK claims that the average woman applies more than 500 chemicals to her body every day during her beauty routine.
Why should you be concerned?
Chemicals such as parabens (a synthetic preservative in everything from toothpaste to shampoo) and phthalates (a class of chemicals that are found in many “fragranced” beauty products such as lotions, perfumes and deodorants) are classified as xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens mimic our natural estrogens creating hormone chaos by increasing the total amount of estrogen, resulting in a condition called estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance has been implicated in many conditions including: breast and prostate cancer, obesity, infertility, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, early onset puberty, hormonal acne and PMS.

EstroSense is a comprehensive liver detoxifier that gently supports the elimination of harmful environmental toxins and helps to bring back hormone synergy. Curcumin, indole-3-carbinol, sulforaphane, calcium-d-glucarate, green tea extract, lycopene and rosemary extract are all very effective for supporting healthy hormone balance. So starting now, read labels and stay informed, check out The Environmental Working Group website www. ewg.org as well as Campaign for Safe Cosmetics www. safecosmetics.org for more information about how you can protect yourself. i am asking for your vote nov. 15 to delta council for a 2nd term. i know delta is a great place to live: i grew up here, graduated from delta secondary, sylvia bishop raised my family here and spent my teaching career in delta schools. my commitment to the preservation of farmland, protection of our green spaces and quality of life in delta is strong. whether it’s insisting on health and air quality measures due to thermal coal transport through delta, protecting Burns Bog, improved programs and services or housing choices, i speak my mind on behalf of residents. electsylviabishop.com
peter mattoo:
occupation: retired. top 3 issues: 1) creating more housing options to increase affordability 2) expand public transportation options 3) Better political Peter mattoo representation that is community driven. i am running for delta council for three reasons. first, as a 34-year resident of delta, i want to give back to the community that gave my family and i so much. secondly, i believe that in recent years, council has become unresponsive to the local community, with representatives more concerned with political careers than serving the interests of residents. lastly, and most importantly, i think it is time for council to reflect greater diversity, whether through cultural heritage, neighbourhood, professional background or age. it is time to shake up the status quo with new voices at the table. note: delta council candidate ron calliou did not submit a response to the Now. also, lois Jackson has been acclaimed as mayor in delta.
she is an entrepreneur, real estate agent and the owner of a group daycare centre and does accounting. she has volunteered at pac and surrey sara sharma minor hockey league. her personal experience is tragic. a dropout student went down the wrong path. on June 29, 2009 her 15 year old son took a ride with him from somewhere without her knowledge, never returned home. the grief was unbearable. she wants to engage today’s youth and equip them with tools to deal with the pressures and pitfalls of modern life. she chooses to work with children because they are our future.www.facebook.com/sara. sharma.9421, @sarasharmaYvr www. surreyprogressives.ca.
rina diaz:
You should vote for me because i will devote myself whole heartedly to advocating for more funding that our growing community desperately needs. i will work with the rina diaz district and board: - to make sure that the staff members supervising our children have adequate training both in conflict resolution and first aid so that they may continue to provide our students with a safe school environment. - to implement a more collaborative stakeholder communication between the board and our voters to ensure that they have more access to policies and regulations for review before they are voted on. - to develop a meaningful connection to learning with more parent involvement within the classrooms.
balraj atwal:

meet the candidates
surrey school trustee candidates (cont.) sukhy dhillon:
as a teacher, for over 20 years i have witnessed and experienced the challenges faced by students, parents and teachers. issues of physical space for learning (too many sukhy dhillon portables) lack of funding has decreased considerably. surrey, the largest school district with increasing student population deserves equity within the funding formula. i have a masters degree in education and leadership. i will listen, engage and support the parents in our kids’ education. we must engage with all stakeholders and tackle the problem of bullying and the presence of drugs in our schools. we must have concrete plan to take care of our kids’ physical and mental health.
david matta:
as a surrey resident and a small business developer, i am passionate about fueling small business owners and entrepreneurs with tax incentives, educational tools and david matta city support. further, as a professional having worked in hospitality, utilities and transportation, i will bring my 15+ years of education and experience in to the city hall making transportation efficiency, crime reduction and entrepreneurship top priorities. in addition, i will replace the ineffective police committee with a much more practical, unified system with free information flow that will include your neighborhood participation in reducing crime.
nicole joliet:
the current majority on the surrey school Board has become complacent, refusing to put themselves on the line for our kids. whether it’s protecting our lGBt Nicole Joliet students or addressing the shortfall, the Board has done the least possible so they can look good without taking risks. as an independent, i will hold my fellow trustees accountable, push for policies that would otherwise die quietly in the back room, and pressure the entire Board to do their jobs and put themselves on the line for our kids.
julie tapley:
i care about creating equal access to opportunities. it is important to me that surrey has a strong, thriving and respected public education system. i believe that all
members of our community should be concerned about our city’s future economic prosperity, which is built on a foundation of today’s learners. with a strong public education system Julie Tapley our community will secure a bright and prosperous future. my plan for surrey is to be a liaison between parents, teachers, students and tax payers to allow for meaningful dialogue around the topic of education. i want to be an advocate for surrey’s public schools.
bob holmes (surrey first education):
if elected, i will be driven by my two biggest passions – parent involvement, and increasing education funding. parent involvement is bob holmes extremely important; i will work to strengthen parent engagement and ensure parents and the community are given every possible opportunity to communicate their concerns to the school board. education funding is inadequate, and i will continue my work of the last several years, advocating for more funding for our district. find out much more about my values, and my vision for our school district by visiting www.bobholmes.ca, where you’ll also find contact info – i’m ready to talk education any time.
niovi patsicakis:
i bring my lengthy teaching experience and personal knowledge of what the needs are for surrey students and staff. i have written many letters Niovi Patsicakis in local papers demanding that our Bc government fully fund public education. as a trustee, i will continue to speak out and work with other citizens to protect our high quality public education system. i will be an advocate for all students. in addition to my passion for education, i have the collaborative skills needed to work with community groups, employee groups and board management to ensure excellence in the surrey Board of education.
charlene dobie (incumbent):
it has been a privilege to serve as a school trustee in the surrey school district, and working with the students, parents
Charlene dobie
and staff is an enriching experience. i have been fully engaged in my work as a trustee, approachable, and a strong advocate for public education. i bring a unique perspective to the position as i am also an education assistant. my classroom experience is always top of mind when i am making decisions on the Board of education. there is more work to be done and i am ready for the challenge of the next four years.
harman singh:
teacher – 3 issues: 1. meeting students’ needs 2. resource allocation & accountability 3. parental involvement & workshops. i would like to provide clear grounds for harman singh resource allocation and accountability on my part and all involved stakeholders. this means: supporting the needs and choices of all students, extra-curricular programs which keep kids engaged in their passions, having counselling more approchable for all students, Being creative and promoting creativity in our schools and staying connected with the fast-paced technology of today. i believe a larger investment in education leads to fewer resources needed in crime prevention. Building stronger humanitarian values of love, care and respect leads to a healthier school environment and the greater community.
kirsty peterson:
Kirsty peterson is a passionate advocate for people. she speaks for children, youth and families and knows that the only way to achieve representation that Kirsty Peterson reflects the diversity of our community is by engaging, listening and paying attention to the people who live here. Kirsty believes that it is the school board’s responsibility to educate the public in issues that impact students and education. she knows that people care what happens in our community and that we need to encourage them to be engaged in our school district. november 15th vote Kirsty peterson; engaging parents, engaging students, engaging communities.
sikandar hayat:
when elected, i will seek guidance and wisdom from all stakeholder groups for the betterment of our students in order to make surrey schools a sikandar hayat shining example of what the public education system can be by promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment. i will work hard for the
development / promotion of programs for at-risk students and at-risk behaviours; donate 20% of my school trustee salary to create curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students to demonstrate their leadership capacity; and more community and student engagement in making policies to meet the needs of our students and reflect community wishes.
gary tymoschuk (surrey first education):
occupation: vicepresident operations, credit counselling society. i have the skills, knowledge, and experience: i Gary Tymoschuk was elected to surrey school Board 1996 and surrey city council 1999, re-elected 2002. i have served on surrey public library Board (1991 – 1996) and surrey crime prevention society (2009 to present) – as chair on both. i am currently a leader in a national non-profit organization. i will strive for educational excellence and improved student success; create safe, caring and healthy learning environments; actively advocate for additional provincial Government funding; always encourage and welcome parental input and support the establishment and maintenance of positive and harmonious working relationships with all employee groups.
bal sabharwal:
i have grown up in this beautiful city of surrey for over 40 years. my children and i have gone through the schooling system of surrey and hence i bal sabharwal have seen the changes that have occurred over my lifetime. as a youngster i played soccer and as a parent i coached soccer, mentored children and have taught at our college. the city is growing and the needs of the dynamic society must be addressed. issues such as class sizes, addressing funding needs, ensuring there are enough schools, well trained teachers and counsellors and ensuring a safe healthy learning environment are all important to maintaining a high standard of education.
patricia enair:

doctors urging vaccinations as flu season hits adrian macNair
now staff twitter @adrianmacnair
surreY — coming down with the common cold may be unavoidable this winter but health care professionals are urging people to vaccinate themselves against the flu. up to 20,000 people nationwide contract the influenza each year resulting in 4,000 deaths, the largest number of fatalities from a preventable disease in canada. michelle murti, medical health officer with fraser health responsible for delta,
white rock and south surrey, says more people are getting vaccinated now that the flu shot is more readily available in pharmacies and walk-in clinics. flu shots are recommended for everyone and are free in B.c. for all children from six months to five years of age, people 65 years and older, pregnant women, aboriginal people, people with chronic health conditions and those with compromised immune systems. the vaccine is also important for anyone who lives or works with a person at higher risk of health complications from the flu.
of the pregnancy.” murti said there are sometimes mild reactions to the vaccine, such as localized redness and swelling around the injection, but it usually clears up within 24 hours. she warned the risk of not being vaccinated outweighs any short-term side effects. for a complete list of flu clinics near you, visit fraserhealth.ca/flushot. Bring your carecard or other government i.d. (valid driver’s license) to the clinic, and wear a short-sleeved shirt.
“it’s a community immunity phenomenon. so even if people are highrisk in your home, it’s not just enough for them to be vaccinated, it’s important for them not to be exposed to the flu,” said murti. children also have the option of getting the flumist nasal spray instead of the shot. even pregnant women are encouraged to inoculate themselves. the vaccine causes a lower chance of babies born pre-term or undersized. “it really is the safer thing, both for mom and for baby, to get the flu shot at any stage

surrey candidates disagree about mental health facility amy reid

surreY — while surrey first’s crime platform calls for an institution for the mentally ill, some have come out against the idea. surrey first’s platform includes a promise the team will request the province build a “secure mental health facility” which would “ensure that individuals with mental health and addictions issues are not put in the community without support, nor require police officers to remain at hospital as
security.” Brenda locke and stephen Gammer, under the teamsurrey banner, called the creation of an institution for mentally ill individuals a “backward and ill-conceived proposition” in a press release. locke, former minister of state for mental health and addiction services and former liberal mla for surreybrenda Locke Green timbers from 2001 to 2005, says institutionalizing mentally ill people does not work.

“it did not work at riverview and it will not work in surrey,” she said. “mentally ill people need real healthcare alternatives to being locked-up or left untreated. the stigma around mental illness is perhaps one of the most oppressive parts of the disease, and forced institutionalization will only heighten that stigma and cause mentally ill people to fear seeking help,” locke said, adding she’d prefer to see integration for the mentally ill in the communities they call home. teamsurrey is calling for the development of treatment plans and supports using the latest intelligence available. independent mayoral candidate John edwards was a nurse at riverview during the time the facility was being downsized. “that was when the population was about 2,500 people. i worked there for four years, so i know what institutional care is like,” he said.

edwards said creating a mental health institution would be a step backward. “i do believe that the concept… of good rehabilitation and reintegration of people with mental illness into the community is the only way to go. i’m saying that because many of the people who have mental illness can, in fact, go on to have regular lives,” he said. drawing from his experience in the pharmaceutical industry, edwards said there are new drugs to treat such disorders. “with the better drugs we have, we know we can treat many of the symptoms,” he said. “and quite successfully.” edwards suggested creating an institution like riverview in surrey, or anywhere else, would be a misstep, adding he is “very much opposed to institutional care.” “i think what we need is a centre of excellence for research and treatment and management,” he said. “and we also need a place where the general community can get education around mental illness, because society still has a very negative attitude toward those with mental illness.” he noted that in any given year, one in five canadians will experience some kind of mental health issue, according to statistics provided by the centre for addiction and mental health. asked for her response to those statements, hepner said teamsurrey has misinterpreted her plan as a “housing asylum.” “[this facility] allows better assessment of need and then need placement so that they’re not going into the hospital, getting medicated and getting thrown back out onto the street without full assessment opportunities.” hepner said all the mayors in the region are asking for such a facility because mental health funding hasn’t kept pace with regional population growth. she emphasized the importance of freeing up police resources, as officers can be required to stay at hospitals for hours in cases involving mental illness. “they’d have a drop-off place where those who are dedicated to mental health issues are available immediately to do the care, assessment and follow-up,” she said. hepner said the length of stay could vary widely. “if you need to be there for 90 days, it’s a place for you to be. if you need to be there for six months, it’s a place for you to be.” areid@thenownewspaper.com

You can throw money at anything and ‘x’ amount of dollars, especially for something like recording, gets drained,” he said. with a bigger chunk of the change, mcBurnie says the band would be able to take some money to tour with as well. “we were discussing that if we’re going to do it again, we’re going to do it wholeheartedly and just work our butts off and make sure that we’ve done the best we could,” the singer said. as for what’s immediately ahead of them, mcBurnie said the band plans to “put everything they’ve got” into the upcoming finale. Good for Grapes plays thursday. nov. 20 at the commodore Ballroom for the peak performance project finale. tickets are $15 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.ca.

surreY — hot off the heels of the global little free library movement, surrey libraries has found a place to nest a little free library of their own. in surrey’s Boundary park (6058 Boundary dr. w) on nov. 1, community members and library employees unveiled their own little free library – a painted, wooden box a little larger than a birdhouse – for residents to give and take from as they please. though the surrey libraries helped kickstart the initiative, a local community group will be taking care of the space. “the village surrey transition initiative, they’re the ones who spearheaded this particular little free library,” said surinder

Little free library pops up Bhogal, deputy chief librarian at surrey libraries. “we want the community to take ownership so it’s really important to have people come forward to look after it,” she said. the event on saturday (nov. 1) was the culmination of almost a year and a half’s work, Bhogal said. another one will soon be popping up at north surrey’s Bridgeview park and others will serve less public areas such as the food bank. “the books are free, you don’t need a library card. it’s just kind of like a community book shelf,” she said. today’sdrive 20 14 Toyota Venza
Thursday, November 13, 2014
a47
Your journey starts here.
Something a Little Different While it sits taller than a Camry, step-in height remains low, so getting in and out is still easy for heightchallenged people and the elderly. Also, since it has a lower centre of gravity, the Venza is naturally safer and sportier than traditional SUV’s. Seven standard airbags add to the peace-of-mind.
BY DAVID CHAO
The Toyota Venza is somewhat unique in Toyota’s line-up, which consists of high-quality models with generic characteristics. The Venza boasts expressive styling, an engaging driving experience, driver-friendly technology and impressive versatility that gives it a bit more charisma. The Venza is larger than the RAV4, yet smaller than the seven-passenger Highlander. This makes the Venza a great choice for someone looking for the versatility of a small SUV, but doesn’t want the bulk or brutish look of some SUV’s. While the Venza’s car-like chassis does limit its off-road ability and towing capacity, its reliable choice of engines, comfortable seating for five and impressive standard features make it a strong competitor in the crossover SUV segment. The Venza experienced some notable changes for the 2013 model year, so Toyota didn’t make huge alterations for 2014. XLE and Limited models receive standard power-folding mirrors and the Limited also adds front and rear parking sensors.
Design
The Venza shares the same platform as the Toyota Camry and Highlander. Therefore, the V6 engine, transmission, brakes, steering and suspension are the same and can be trusted as reliable and dependable. However, the Venza is more than just an amalgamation of the two models.
Even though the Venza was given a make over last year, the visual differences were limited to the grille, mirrors, and the lights. The standard 19-inch wheels (20-inch wheels are available) give it a muscular appearance.
Performance
There are two engine options to choose from for the Venza, as in the past. The base model Venza comes with a 2.7-litre four-cylinder which returns a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 8.6L/100km. However, the Venza is not a light vehicle and with only 182 hp available, merging onto a highway is not the easiest. The 268 hp, 3.5-litre V6 is much more up to the task. This engine still achieves a combined fuel economy rating of 9.6L/100km. This should be the engine of choice for those who plan to do a lot of highway driving. Regardless of which powerplant you choose, it will be mated to a six-speed automatic ECT transmission with sequential shift mode. Also, both can be equipped with AWD drivetrain for increased traction all year. All Venza models come with electric power steering which is surprisingly responsive and provides a reasonable amount of feedback. It can feel a bit heavy at slower speeds, however.
The Venza offers the comfort you expect from a premium sedan and combines it with the higher seating position and outward visibility associated with an SUV. It also provides a wider, more athletic stance and available all-wheel-drive.
The large wheels that look nice are a bit harsh over rough pavement and allow some noise to enter the cabin, but adds to the overall styling.
The Venza is also a product exclusive to North America. Despite the fact that it shares its platform with other Toyota vehicles, the U.S.-based design team made sure it is visually different than the Camry and its larger sibling, the Highlander.
The cabin inside the Venza feels large, airy and spacious in all directions. Head, leg and hip room numbers are all near the top of the segment. To make the cabin feel even more airy, an optional panoramic moonroof allows all occupants to enjoy the sky.

From the eight-way adjustable driver seat, the instrument panel features a high-visibility Optitron display. Toyota also allows Venza owners to adjust the size of the font of the information centre to increase legibility. Since the Venza has no third-row of seating, it is able to offer 70.1 cubic feet of cargo space when the seats are folded down. To increase its utility, the Venza has standard 60/40 split folding second-row seats with a remote release in the cargo area. This means you don’t have to leave the rear hatch while loading larger items. Standard on the Venza is a Display Audio system using a 6.1-inch touchscreen that is capable of connecting to external devices through an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port or via Bluetooth. Voice-recognition is also standard and several upgrade packages, including leather seats and navigation, are available. Overall, the comfort level is high and the seats provide good support over long drives.
Features
Starting prices range from $28,695 to $32,250. The Venza has four models to choose from and three packages. Standard equipment includes keyless entry, eight-way power adjustable driver seat with memory function, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated exterior mirrors with turn signals, power rear hatch, and automatic headlights. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include leather seats, heated front seats, backup camera, navigation, push-button start, and automatic high beams. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for FWD four-cylinder models are 10.0 city, 6.9 highway for 8.6 combined and AWD models return 10.2 city, 7.1 highway and 8.8 combined. Six-cylinder models in FWD trim are rated at 11.1 city, 7.7 highway and 9.6 combined and AWD models see 11.4 city, 7.9 highway for 9.8 combined.

civic election 2014 meet the candidates
surrey council candidates merv bayda (one surrey):
my name is merv Bayda and i am asking for the privilege to serve as your city councilor. i am proud to be part of Barinder rasode’s one surrey team, we have a merv bayda proven plan in place to make surrey one of the safest cities in canada. only 13% of the people in surrey feel safe. recently released statistics indicate that crime is on the rise. this is not what other politicians are telling you. when you do not feel safe, nothing else matters. it is time for change at city hall and the one surrey team has the answer.
kal dosanjh (one surrey):
i believe that the power to vote is a power to institute change. my occupation as a law enforcement officer over the course of 15 years allowed me to connect with youth. i embraced my social responsibility of serving our community by developing and running hundreds of youth empowerment programs. it was a call of duty which took me
into law enforcement, but its a call of passion which takes me to the steps of city hall. with one voice we must tackle the social issues of crime, poverty and homelessness. i will lead with integrity, honor, and compassion.
Kal dosanjh
darlene bowyer (one surrey):
the number one issue in this election is poor governance that has allowed crime to be rampant in our communities. we need to remedy that darlene bowyer situation. i have served on many community based committees, and have operated a business in surrey for over 35 years, and i am hearing loud and clear from residents that we need to stop the revolving door of justice.residents are tired of hearing that their perception of crime is not the reality. the “one surrey” team, is committed to engage with citizens to fully and successfully address the public safety issues in surrey.

public safety is of paramount importance to residents and business alike - without this we don’t have a successful city. transparency needs to occur in all brian young aspects of our city! as Block watch captain, i was not informed that property crime nearly doubled until after the quarter had finished. public safety
should be public information, not reserved for the privileged. i believe that all city centres should be treated equally with the list of amenities and projects driven by the community, not dictated by the city. onesurrey was created to give you a voice, please use it on november 15th.
rick scorsese:
as a surrey resident and a small business developer, i am passionate about fueling small business owners and entrepreneurs with tax incentives, educational tools rick scorsese and city support. further, as a professional having worked in hospitality, utilities and transportation, i will bring my 15+ years of education and experience in to the city hall making transportation efficiency, crime reduction and entrepreneurship top priorities. in addition, i will replace the ineffective police committee with a much more practical, unified system with free information flow that will include your neighborhood participation in reducing crime.

surrey council (cont.) stephen gammer (teamsurrey):
i am a life long surrey resident having graduated from lord tweedsmuir. i am passionate about our city, its people and our future. after over a decade of one party rule we want to see balance, safety, and simplicity stephen Gammer returned to city hall. we want to restore the process of decision making to the people of surrey instead of for friends and insiders. team surrey will be there to ask the tough questions, hold people’s feet to the fire and help restore people’s faith in our city hall. on november 15 please save 2 votes for teamsurrey
brenda locke (teamsurrey):
we love surrey – my family has lived here for more than 35 years. we have seen tremendous growth in our city, but infrastructure has not kept pace with that growth. transportation, social services, recreational services and especially policing and public safety need serious and immediate attention. we can and must do better. for more than a decade, council has
been dominated by one-party rule. that is not good for surrey and our infrastructure deficits are a result. i have experience as a former mla, minister and businesswoman. teamsurrey will ask the tough questions and bring balance to council.
brenda Locke
jim mcmurtry:
i am opposed to a council hand-picked in the mayor’s living room, a $395,412 salary for a city manager, a “white elephant” city hall that was part of municipal expenses rising 16% last year, richard Branson Jim mcmurtry getting $420,000 at surrey’s regional economic summit, the mayor making $150,000 of which one-third is tax-free, a million in uncapped contributions to surrey first at election time, and free trips for politicians to england, india, china, colombia, italy and puerto rico. if the surrey circus is to remain the same each year, at least the clowns should change. fight repeat offenders – don’t re-elect them!

surrey candidates disagree about mental health facility amy reid
now staff twitter @amyreid87
surreY — while surrey first’s crime platform calls for an institution for the mentally ill, some have come out against the idea. surrey first’s platform includes a promise the team will request the province build a “secure mental health facility” which would “ensure that individuals with mental health and addictions issues are not put in the community without support, nor require police officers to remain at hospital as
security.” Brenda locke and stephen Gammer, under the teamsurrey banner, called the creation of an institution for mentally ill individuals a “backward and ill-conceived proposition” in a press release. locke, former minister of state for mental health and addiction services and former liberal mla for surreybrenda Locke Green timbers from 2001 to 2005, says institutionalizing mentally ill people does not work.
Special Guest: DR ART HISTER!!

“if you need to be there for 90 days, it’s a place for you to be. if you need to be there for six months, it’s a place for you to be.” areid@thenownewspaper.com

london — dusk is falling as we gather on a quiet residential street in hammersmith, a group of strangers milling about in front of a row of small houses and garages. we glance at each other, wondering if we could possibly be in the right place. then a door swings open and we enter a world fragrant with the herbal bite of juniper and the sharp tang of spirits. welcome to sipsmith, the first distillery to open in london in nearly 200 years. it launched in march 2009, tucked into a small brick garage that was for a while the office of the whisky writer michael Jackson. until the spring of 2014 this was home to prudence, a beautiful, bespoke 300-litre copper still from Germany, as well as her younger sister patience. now, sipsmith has moved to a bigger space in neighbouring chiswick, where a new still, constance, has joined the other two. tonight, though, we’re in the tiny original
distillery, taking part in a tour that has become a popular part of social life in london, reflective of the renaissance not just of cocktail culture, but of the city’s historic passion for gin. that passion dates back to the 17th century, when dutch-born william, prince of orange, took the english throne and brought with him a juniper-flavoured grain spirit called genever, the netherlands’ precursor to english gin. his subjects loved it as much as he did, and by the 18th century england, and especially london, was in the throes of what became known as the “Gin craze.” By 1730 the capital city boasted some 7,000 dram shops and Britons were drinking an average 10 litres of “mother’s ruin” per person per year, londoners five times that much. something clearly had to be done, and so began the series of Gin acts and tax increases. however, it was likely the dramatic rise in the cost of grain that really see sPIrITs › page 37

slowed down production. By the early 19th century, many of the distilleries had shut down. none opened again until three gents named sam Galsworthy, Jared Brown and fairfax hall decided to bring the art of small-batch, handcrafted gin back to london under the name sipsmith independent distillers. mind you, it took them two years of jumping through legal hoops before they got the go ahead and prudence went to work. today, sipsmith produces vodka and a handful of niche sprits, but their main product is a london dry gin infused with 10 botanicals. it has won numerous awards and can be found on the back bars of fine
establishments such as london’s ritz and savoy hotels. sampling is, of course, part of the tour, and as we sip the well-balanced gin we can detect floral notes, fresh lemon, orange zest and, of course, crisp, clean juniper. and, as so often happens when gin is involved, the strangers who first met on the sidewalk quickly become friends, and as the garage door swings shut behind us, we wander off to the pub at the end of the street for one last round.
