SURREY LADIES’ COUNTY GOLF ASSOCIATION NEWS ROUND UP SUMMER 2022

The Liphook Scratch Cup puts Liphook Golf Club firmly on the England National golfing fixture list each year and never more so than in this year of the club’s centenary.

A field of 54 of the best players in the country lined up to play the yellow course – the youngest aged 13 and 27 players with handicaps at or below scratch. This provided for a very close finish.

Playing Liphook for the first time, nothing deterred 15 year-old Matilde Santilli (-1) from Foxhills. She won the cup with rounds of 74 & 72 for a 36 hole total 146. Isabella Kent (-3) from Castle Royle was second on 148

also on 148 (75,73) from Hindhead. A field of 60 ladies played In fourth place was Millie Cottrell in the 18 hole strokeplay from Wentworth on 150 (76,74), a competition on June 23rd. countback from Jess Haines, Burnham Belinda Pope (Hindhead) won & Berrow (74,76). the main prize with an impressive score of 74.

SURREY JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Surrey Junior Championship was held at Fulwell Golf Club on 1st June. 26 junior girls competed in the championship, a 36 hole medal, with an 18 hole medal for the U13 players. It was great to see a cross-section of abilities – handicaps ranged from 0 up to 30.1. The youngest competitor was just 6 years old! Emily Peaford (Walton Heath) swept the trophy board, winning the scratch trophy and nett cup, plus the Under 15 and Under 13 trophies with her score of 147 gross/143 nett.

SUMMER SUCCESSES FOR SURREY PLAYERS

Other Surrey players have had their share of success during the summer. Ava Bates became the first girl to win the Wentworth Junior Club Championship.

Ellen Yates (West Hill) played for the victorious England team in the Home Internationals at Downfield in Dundee. She was also part of the England Girls’ team at the European Team championship in Iceland, where England were beaten in the semi-finals.

Millie Cottrell (Wentworth) represented Wales at the Home Internationals. Aimi Bullock (Bletchingley) was selected to play for the English team at the European Disability Team Championship. The team came third at the event, which was won by Ireland. Home player Tracy Rowe (Hankley Common) had a wonderful round of 76, playing well under her handicap to win the nett prize. Surrey players star at South Region All Age Championships Sarah Wilmore (Worplesdon), Annabel Peaford (Walton Heath) and Ellie Monk (Sunningdale) walked off with the majority of the trophies in the South Region All Age Championships at Ealing on the 5th August. Sarah Wilmore was the overall Champion, with a 36 hole gross score of 151. She also won the Nett prize. Ellie Monk was second overall and won the Under 18 Scratch Trophy. Annabel Peaford won gross and nett prizes for the Under 16, Under 14 and Under 13s with her score of 159. Unsurprisingly, Surrey won the county shield for the best three nett scores!
