At the time of writing, along with several county card events (Surrey Golf Society) we have had several county championships; Charles De Blonay won the U12’s, both the U13 & U14’s was won by Aaron Moody, The Seniors by Tom Hawkings and the ultimate title, the County Amateur was claimed by Charlie Crockett.

It would be amiss of me not to mention the fantastic U14 RookieTour, that after a two-year absence due to COVID is now back with a bang, details about this series of events for both boys and girls can be found on the Surrey Golf website, as are reports on each championship and matches. My thanks to all our volunteers and the clubs who support the county by hosting these days.

On top of this, as I mentioned in the in the previous edition, we moved office in April to Clandon Regis Golf Club.

Based on past experience, moves are never easy, but I have to say this one was fairly smooth, and we have Well, just where has the time gone? It’s already mid-June and the Surrey team are in full flow running championships, matches, knock out competitions, coaching sessions, on top of the day to day calls about rules, handicapping, WHS, course rating to name but a few things.

been made so welcome. If you are ever passing the office, please feel free to call in to say hi and meet the team, we are more than happy to put the kettle on!

One hot golfing topic that has people talking at the moment is about the LIV Tour, is it good for golf or the opposite, only time will tell. As some might say, are the golfers who are taking part greedy or just making the most of an opportunity to secure their families future?

There are a lot of views on this, for once I am sitting on the fence, for those of you who know me it is obviously a very strong fence!

On the one hand my thought is, haven’t most of these golfers earned enough riches to ensure financial security? On the other hand, if another employer came to you and offered to quadruple your salary and more would you stay or go? Food for thought and discussion.

Finally, I am incredibly pleased to report that club membership is still very solid with no drastic downturn as some thought might happen with the relaxing of COVID rules and people going back to work be it in an office or elsewhere. I have never known so many clubs with waiting lists, which just shows the strength of this great game and the number of new people coming into it. Great to see and long may it continue.

If you would like any further information on any of the above events we run for golfers of all ages and standards throughout the year please visit the Surrey Golf website www. surreygolf.org or call us at the office on 01483 755788 and either Caroline, Sam, Sue or myself will be more than happy to assist you. We are here to help all our affiliated members and future members. I really hope to see at one or more of our events. And remember the kettle is on!

May your drives be straight, your approaches be close, and your putts holed.

Cheers, Steve

Is poor sight affecting your golf game?

Cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration are the most likely conditions to affect vision. The Nuffield Health Guildford and Woking Hospitals shed some light on these conditions and how they can help get you back on the golf course.

Cataracts

Cataract, a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, is the biggest cause of reversible blindness worldwide. Early signs include blurry vision, glare from car headlights and difficulty reading. Blindness caused by cataracts is reversible with safe and effective surgery (the most common procedure carried out in the UK).

It’s usually done under local anaesthetic and completed within 20 minutes. An ultrasonic probe is inserted through a tiny incision in the cornea (outer layer) of the eye. This breaks down the lens so it can be easily removed before a synthetic lens is inserted to replace it.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD is the most common reason behind blind registration in the UK. In AMD there is death of light-sensitive receptors in the retina. Signs of AMD include distortion, blurred vision and being unable to focus on your central vision. In some cases, we can treat AMD and may be able to improve your vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma often develops with no pain and no symptoms until it’s very advanced. Glaucoma often runs in families so it’s important to get regular eye health checks if you have a family history. Blindness caused by glaucoma is permanent but we can help to preserve your remaining vision.
