‘Please come home,’ 9-year-old urges missing older sister North Surrey’s Jamie-Leah Prohl, 12 (below right), was last seen March 27 by Kevin Diakiw NINE-YEAR-OLD Lisa Menard sat speechless in

front of a bank of TV cameras at Surrey RCMP headquarters Wednesday afternoon in a heartwrenching attempt to get her sister back. At a police-arranged press gathering, Lisa clutched a teddy bear while hiding her face behind a picture she drew of her 12-year-old

sister Jamie-Leah Prohl. Around the picture she wrote, “I miss u Lisa, “I love you, and “Please come home. Police share Lisa’s concern for Jamie-Leah, who was last seen during the evening hours of March 27 before going to bed at her home in the 13200 block of 105 Avenue.

is being moved out of a North Surrey school at the end of the school year and a learning centre for teens is slated to move in by September. Due to dwindling student numbers, the longstanding Discovery School, one of the Surrey School District’s “choice programs, will be housed in different, yet-to-be-determined elementary school in the fall. Enrolment at Discovery is only about 57 students this year and has been slowly declining over the past several years. The building, near 131 Street and 109 Avenue, has the capacity for approximately 200. Trustee Shawn Wilson said the board of education simply couldn’t justify using the large space for such a small number of students. “We should be respectful and responsible in terms of the resources of the school district ... and when you support a program that’s not carrying itself, you’re taking away from other resources, he said. “To maintain a program that’s not viable and not provide services that people want, you’ve really got to ask yourself if you’re doing the right job as Shawn Wilson a trustee. I felt, as much as I would have liked to support the community that would like to see Discovery stay where it is, we just couldn’t do it.

Learning centre: For North Surrey

40 more blood donors needed at Surrey clinic

From page 1 While some parents argued relocating the program will result in even fewer students as families won’t want to make the move, school trustees are hopeful the opposite may occur and a fresh location will attract new interest. It’s uncertain where the Discovery program will be moved, but two schools that have space – Royal Heights and Prince Charles elementaries – are options. The school community, said Wilson, will decide within the month. The transfer of the elementary program also helped the school district with another dilemma its been grappling with for months: finding much-needed and hardto-find space in the north end of the city for a learning centre for teens who haven’t found success in the mainstream school system. There are currently five such learning centres in Surrey, with programs that feature flexible hours and small group instruction for Grade 10 to 12 students. Beginning in September, the more than 200 students from the Newton Learning Centre near 64 Avenue and King George Boulevard, will move into the vacated Discovery building. The Newton Learning Centre currently operates out of a leased facility, so moving into the district-owned Discovery building will save Surrey thousands of dollars per year in lease payments.

more donors to give blood for those in need. Canadian Blood Services needs 40 more donors to book appointments to donate at the Surrey clinic on Friday, April 6 in order to meet hospital demand. Since it takes many donors to treat one patient, these 40 donors represent the needs of five leukemia patients over the course of just one week. Long weekends can be a difficult time of year to collect blood. With people out of their normal routines, spending time away and with family, blood donation can become a last priority. However, blood is needed every minute of every day across Canada. Book an appointment today to help reach the target of collecting 53 blood donations at the next Surrey blood donor clinic on Friday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at #10-6830 King George Blvd. Call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or visit www.blood.ca for more information or to book an appointment to donate. Appointments are recommended to help reduce clinic line-ups and waiting times. Those donors who already have scheduled appointments are encouraged to honour their appointment. Healthy people can donate blood every 56 days at the age of 17. Firsttime donors after the age of 61, or regular donors who want to continue donating after their 71st birthday will need to consult their doctor for medical permission to donate. For more information about donor eligibility, visit blood.ca/eligibility or call 1-888-2-DONATE. newsroom@surreyleader.com

Developments at Bose Farm inch forward Two builders plan to restore six of the historic structures on the Cloverdale property by Kevin Diakiw TWO MASSIVE developments

planned for the historic Bose Farm have appeared before city’s heritage watchdog in the last two months for review of builders’ plans to rescue historic buildings on the site. John Rempel is building 253 apartments on the west side of the site at 16420 64 Ave., while the Platinum Group is working to construct 80 homes and 114 townhomes on the east side of the property. Both developers are planning to save three heritage buildings, one of which is 114 years old. In February, the city’s Heritage Advisory Commission (HAC) reviewed the plan by Platinum Development, which includes rezoning the property from agricultural to residential for up to 15 units per acre. The development scheme also calls for the rescue of three heritage buildings on the property, including one of the farmhouses, a barn and a milk cooling shed. Due to the precarious condition of the farmhouse, the builder

will be pulling it down and restoring it, using historically accurate materials, according to minutes from the HAC meeting. And the shed from the site will be repurposed as a single-car garage on the same lot on the reconstructed farmhouse. According to the minutes of the meeting, the commission liked the concept and that the developer was “heritage friendly.” The HAC wanted the applicant to prepare and implement an interpretation program for the site. Some members also expressed concern that the calf barn wouldn’t be readily visible from the street. Then on March 28, Rempel brought forward his plan to save three structures, including a farmhouse, the dairy building and 1936 barn. He was at the HAC in March looking to amend his agreement to restore only the 1936 barn, not the more recent additions. The Rempel application could be back before council as soon as April 26. kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

RE: “HOW ABOUT corporate net-

zero?” (Letters, March 29.) In response to the letter from Frank Sterle Jr., I am wondering how young one needs to be to not remember the 1990s under the NDP, when B.C. was a “have-not” province and businesses left us by the hundreds to go elsewhere? It sure felt good to become a “have” province again in this century. And it happened by making the business climate more attractive. Yes, business thrives on making a profit. Without profits, businesses leave or shut down. The difference between business and the teachers is that teachers want the government to tax us more, while businesses want to be taxed similar to other places. If not, they will move where there are less taxes. Perhaps we should suggest the same to the teachers and others who want to increase our taxes to pay their demands.

Battle of Vimy Ridge. After failed attempts by both British and French forces, a troop of brave and determined Canadian soldiers captured this strategic ridge in France, which was of great importance to the German defence. Despite the terrible price in casualties, this battle marked not only a significant Allied victory, but also the first time Canadians had fought as an independent force and not as part of the British Army. Along with other achievements during the

First World War, the Battle of Vimy Ridge helped establish Canada as a key player on the world stage, earning our country a separate signature on the Versailles Peace Treaty which ended the war. As a member of The War Amps Operation Legacy, a group of committed young people who are dedicated to preserving Canada’s military heritage, I would like to highlight this significant anniversary of a battle considered by many to mark Canada’s birth as a nation. RE: GETTING RID of the penny.

This is what happens when ignorant people are in charge. You either remove that second decimal place in the currency or not. You can’t have it both ways: No penny, but retain the second decimal place. Just take off that second decimal place and eliminate all the coins that use that place, which includes pennies, nickels and quarters. That leaves you with just dollars and dimes, and if you want another coin, add back the half-dollar – note I didn’t say 50-cent piece. Then all prices would be on dollardime basis: $12.8 for example (12 dollars, eight dimes). You no longer call things by “cents” so it is eight dimes, not 80 cents. Anything priced below eight dimes is HST-exempt, since the first dime of HST does not kick in until the eight-dime price level. And of course, prices such as 141.4 cents per litre of gas have always been absurd, so that would change to $1.4 per litre. All those extra decimal points violate the rules for significant figures. When gas was 17.9 cents per gallon, that might have been a significant figure for that last decimal place, but not any more.

ONE CAN TELL B.C.’s newspapers are prepping for their part in the B.C. Liberal re-election campaign when they are enthusiastically publishing absurdities regarding B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix’s obviously accidental farepaying blunder. Really, is the thinking readership actually supposed to swallow that Dix – a person with everything to lose and nothing to gain (except a couple bucks to add onto his generous salary, benefits, etc.) – would be foolish enough to intentionally commit fare evasion? Missing a bus pass or simply not having the change is perhaps plausible and should be forgivable. However, it’s a stretch to think this political leader would actually risk so much by trying to evade a transit fare for one SkyTrain trip. Come on, we’re not brain donors here, are we?

column of March 29 entitled “The cost of campaigning” was, as usual, very informative. However, I would like to take issue with some conclusions reached. As Mr. Bucholtz states, “Surrey First only received $55,300 in donations from individuals, which isn’t much considering the overall donations.” Until the provincial government brings in some meaningful electoral reform, individual donations will always be so. The Campbell/Clark government had the opportunity for reform with their Local Government Elections Task Force, which fumbled

the ball badly with any kind of reform. As long as federal and provincial donors are taxreceipted, civic donors will always be the poor election cousins. A further statement: “...it’s also important to note that Surrey has grown tremendously in population and communicating with possible voters isn’t cheap or easy.” It’s interesting to note that the spending limit on the nomination process for the entire province of B.C. for the last federal election was $692,229 which is only slightly larger than the Surrey First expenditure. Even more illuminating is that the spending limit for the four fed-

eral ridings in Surrey, including North Delta, is only $305,679. Lastly “...but the cost of mounting campaigns isn’t all that different any more.” Surely without some type of election reform, the costs of civic elections – already costing more than the federal or provincial elections – will continue to escalate with the perception that he who spends the most wins the election. I’ve always thought that to increase the meagre voter turnout a flat civic voter credit should be issued to all the citizens who take the time to vote.

RE: “CORONER says beating led to death of North Delta senior,” The Leader, March 27. I was so saddened to hear of this story, my heart goes out to his family and may they have the justice Mr. Gerald McDonald deserves. North Delta and Surrey have quite a few scary families and such who live here. Sadly the police, the justice system, the municipalities and even our neighbourhood crime prevention offices do practically nothing about it. The amount of violent crime and murders that are not gang-related is staggering out here. Our taxes and the cost of living here are disgusting as well. In Greater Vancouver, North Delta is known as The Delta Hole and Surrey is usually

referred to as Slurrey. At times I can really see why. The mayors of both cities can tear down, rebuild and pave over, or rename a street, park, etc., but decent people do not forget what has happened in a neighbourhood, nor the persons affected by such crimes. I am truly scared for my family and my relatives who live here. The two cities used to be a lot safer, affordable and there was also a lot more green space where nature and wildlife could thrive. I think we would be safer living in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver or some shady neighbourhood in New York or Los Angeles.

Surrey explores tennis centre for Newton City working with firm to build training facility by Kevin Diakiw SURREY IS exploring the idea of creating a tennis

training facility in Newton. The city’s strategic plan for parks development from 2008 to 2017 calls for the creation of more tennis and squash courts. Last year, the city received an unsolicited proposal from Laurus Coaching Solutions to develop a training facility on city land. The city staff report presented to council Monday identifies 3.5 hectares (8.5 acres) of city land across the street from the current city hall at 142 Street and Highway 10 for a potential site. It was endorsed by the Parks and Recreation Committee. In February, Surrey sent out a request for expressions of interest. “Only one response was received by the city, that Linda Hepner response being from the original proponent, Laurus Coaching Solutions,” a staff report to council states. City staff will now draw up a memorandum of understanding with Laurus and bring it back to council by this summer. “From staff ’s perspective, this proposal has enough merit to pursue further,” manager of parks Laurie Cavan says in the staff report. Coun. Linda Hepner said the tennis centre is a great idea. “I think if you’re going to be a city that’s promoting sport tourism, you better think about what are the sports where there’s opportunity,” Hepner said Tuesday. “And tennis is certainly one of those.” kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

Non-committal finance minister mocks reaction Kevin Falcon says the media over-reacted to his comment about running in the next election by Alex Browne HAS B.C. Liberal MLA Kevin Falcon changed his tune on running for re-election in 2013? Not according to him. B.C.’s finance minister – and Surrey-Cloverdale MLA – said last week that the media overreacted to comments

he made to reporters when discussing the soul-searching process he says he always goes through before making the final decision to run in any election. Falcon caused a stir in a media scrum last month when he said that he had not made a final decision on running

again, and that it would be subject to discussion with his family. “I’m a little bit amused by the fevered discussion in the media,” Falcon said in a telephone interview. “I said the same thing I say every time. I generally don’t make the decision 14 months ahead of the election.”

The province’s next fixed election date is May 14, 2013. Reached by phone last Thursday, fellow local BC Liberal MLAs Gordon Hogg (Surrey-White Rock) and Stephanie Cadieux (Surrey-Panorama) did not equivocate on their future plans – both said

they would run again in 2013. Discussing the fallout from his comments, Falcon said he thinks the media is “hypersensitive” because of the resignation of BC Liberal MLA John van Dongen, who immediately joined the BC Conservatives, leading to speculation

that Premier Christy Clark’s BC Liberal party is splintering. “They (the media) ran with scissors on this,” said Falcon, adding he was still chuckling over House Leader Rich Coleman’s response to questions about whether he planned to run in the next election. Kevin Falcon

“He had the best line,” Falcon said. “He said ‘absolutely – but I’m making the final decision six months before the election.’” In February, Falcon delivered his first provincial budget as finance minister, saying it was aimed at eliminating the province’s deficit by 2013-14, protecting public services and building a more competitive economy that would generate jobs and bring in new investment. “It’s built on fiscal discipline, and it lays a firm foundation for the future we all want,” he said at the time details of the budget were released. During the B.C. Liberal leadership campaign one year earlier, Falcon was also widely quoted that “win or lose” he would run for the party in the next election. He seemed to cast doubt on that commitment, when he was quoted as saying, “As minister of finance, there are very, very long hours, there is travel, there are issues that you also have to factor into the final decision that you make.” Among other members of the Liberal caucus, both Education Minister George Abbott and former finance minister Colin Hansen have said they are considering their options before deciding to run next year.

TransLink did respond internally to one criticism in the report – that its 28 executives at that time across all subsidiaries was too much – and has since made cuts in the senior ranks. Jarvis said TransLink has a “rigorous” process to award incentive bonuses. “Each individual’s performance is tied to corporate goals, including budget management, cost efficiency and customer satisfaction,” he said. “If these goals are not achieved, no incentive is paid.” Mayors’ Council Chair Richard Walton said he doesn’t support executive bonuses in government agencies. “It’s a political minefield and hardly worth the trouble,” he said. Walton said there’s been “a huge amount of anger and indignation” from the public directed at TransLink over the need to raise more money for transit expansion.

more due to other factors in recent weeks. Prices have climbed sharply since early February, when Metro Vancouver drivers were paying an average of $1.25 per litre, reaching a recent high of $1.44 on March 28 before easing late last week to about $1.425. Gasbuddy co-founder Dustin Coupal said the tax increase appears to cement Vancouver’s status as having the highest gas prices in Canada, slightly above some east coast cities. Coupal doesn’t expect any relief for motorists this spring. Many refineries are either undergoing maintenance shutdowns or switching from winter to summer gas blends, he said, so there’s less supply right now and more potential for prices to shoot

higher yet due to market forces. On top of that, gas prices normally rise in spring as more drivers take to the road. “We’re heading into a high gas price season with high prices to start with,” Coupal said. “So it’s likely prices are going higher yet.” Prices in this region were also driven higher after a fire in February knocked a refinery out of service at Cherry Point in Washington State service. It’s expected to resume operations this month. Pump prices don’t have far to go to hit all-time record territory. Metro Vancouver drivers briefly paid $1.50 a litre in the summer of 2008 when crude oil prices spiked. jnagel@surreyleader.com

Surrey signs 20-year deal with Mounties SURREY has inked

a contract with the RCMP that will see the national force police the city for another 20 years. On Monday night, Surrey council gave staff the go-ahead to sign a deal to keep the Mounties in Surrey until March 31, 2032. The contract contains a twoyear opt out clause and an enhanced five-year review of services. The Surrey RCMP detachment, the largest in Canada, has 661 officers and 250 civilian support staff. Coun. Linda Hepner said she’s happy the city will be keeping the Mounties. “I’m pleased that we’re continuing with the RCMP for sure, Hepner said. “And I like some of the things that we heard from the city manager in terms of some of the costs, (which) may actually go down in future years. Those cost savings for

the city will be seen in what it pays for training RCMP officers. Under the new contract, municipalities will continue to pay for 90 per cent of the costs, with the federal government paying 10 per cent. With integrated forces, such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, the costs will drop to 70 per cent for municipalities. The province is establishing a committee to ensure new costs aren’t dumped on municipalities without justification. In addition, Surrey will have a say in who the top cop will be. Currently, Surrey pays about $101 million annually for RCMP services. Although provisions in the new agreement will result in a cost increase of 1.6 per cent over the next three years, these increases will be offset by other changes currently under review by the province. kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

Hungerford heading to UniverCity on Burnaby Mountain

Altitude showcases great views Hungerford Properties is hitting new heights with their latest development, Altitude. Located in UniverCity at Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain, the two high-rise towers will give buyers 360-degree views of Burrard Inlet, Indian Arm, the North Shore mountains and downtown Vancouver. “This is the last best view location on Burnaby Mountain,” says Jason Dolker, director of sales, marketing and service for Hungerford. The location is a draw for buyers to its proximity to everything without being right in the middle of it. “It’s a retreat from the city yet still connected,” Dolker says. “You get the

best of both worlds ... Nobody has our views ... we’re 1,300 feet above sea level. Nothing can compare.” Buyers looking for a greener lifestyle will find their perfect home at Altitude, as it will be part of one of the most sustainable communities in the Lower Mainland. Surrounded by 1,400 acres of forest, the building is designed to be about 45 per cent more efficient than traditional buildings and includes a three-bin kitchen recycling centre and a hydronic hot water heating system, among other energy-efficient features. For more information, visit www. hungerfordproperties.com/altitude or call 604-456-8883.

efficient ... it’s very livable.” Udzenija says that livability is one of the most important things to Concord, and this shows in every home they build. With shared amenities such as an entertainment kitchen, formal dining room, karaoke room, an indoor driving range and an outdoor putting green, Concord has spared no expense on keeping their residents happy and healthy. The fitness facility is particularly impressive, with a stateof-the-art cardio gym that is outfitted with the latest in Italian Kinesis fitness

equipment. “Our amenities set us apart,” says Udzenija. “No other development at this particular time has such an expansive amenities set.” The Met is opening for previews this week, but there has already been a lot of interest in the market. “We’ve been very excited about this for a long time,” Udzenija says. The grand opening will take place April 21. Home start at $279,900. For more information, visit www.themetburnaby. com or call 604-899-8800.

‘It’s all about the location’

Concord Pacific continues to impress with The Met by Kerry Vital

With the opening of their newest high-rise development, The Met in Burnaby, Concord Pacific is once again proving why they are an integral part of the Metro Vancouver real estate business. “It’s all about the location,” says Concord Pacific’s Project Marketing Manager Peter Udzenija. “There are parks everywhere, we’re kitty-corner to Metrotown and just a block and a half from SkyTrain. It’s comfortably close.” The condominium suites are spacious and come in a variety of oneand two-bedroom floorplans. There are some three-bedroom suites available as well on the upper floors. With 8’8’’ ceilings and open balconies or terraces in most homes that are perfect for enjoying your beautiful view, you will never feel cramped in your new space. Wideplank engineered hardwood flooring throughout the main living areas and plush carpeting in the bedrooms is standard, and both lend a touch of elegance to the home. The kitchens are full of thoughtful little details, such as a waste recycling bin and sliding basket under the kitchen sink, soft-close hardware on all the cabinets and a modern white marble tile backsplash that is perfectly complemented by wood veneer cabinetry with open glass display shelving and under-cabinet

lighting. Depending on your plan, your kitchen will be lit by pot or track lighting, and the engineered stone countertop is almost too beautiful to mar by preparing food on it. The Miele appliances are a chef ’s dream, while the polished chrome Grohe faucet is yet another beautiful detail. The luxury extends to the bathrooms, which include engineered quartz stone countertops, a custom medicine cabinet with a mirror, shelves and built-in lighting, and white marble tile flooring that matches the tub/shower surround. Homeowners are given the option to have their home automated with Control4 technology or include air conditioning in their suite. “We have everything that people want,” Udzenija says. “Because of the shape of the building our plans are very

The expansive lobby of The Met, top, will include a lounge area for residents. Situated in the middle of parkland, above, it is easy for homeowners to feel a part of nature while still being close to every amenity they could possibly need, from the Metropolis at Metrotown shopping centre, left, to a convenient SkyTrain station.

PBL says ‘play ball’

BOAZ JOSEPH / THE LEADER

White Rock Tritons infielder Cam Forbes runs after a loose ball after Brad Antchak of the North Delta Blue Jays slides safely into second base during a B.C. Premier Baseball League preseason game at Mackie Park March 24. The two teams meet again in the first game of the regular season Sunday, also in North Delta.

Elite 18-and-under provincial league starts 2012 season Saturday by Rick Kupchuk THE LEAGUE is considered among the elite in North America for high school-aged players. And three local teams are among the 13 which will begin play in the 2012 B.C. Premier Baseball League (PBL) season this weekend, all coming off disappointing years. The White Rock Tritons visit the North Delta Blue Jays in a double header Sunday at noon, while the Whalley Chiefs start their schedule at home Saturday afternoon, also at noon. The 18-and-under league has a long history of sending players to universities on both sides of the border, as well as the professional level. Eleven former PBL players attended Major League Baseball (MLB) spring training camps last month, including four who will start the season in The Show – former North Delta Blue Jay and 2006 American League Most Valuable Player Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins, pitcher Ryan Dempster (North Shore Twins) of the Chicago Cubs, outfielder Michael Saunders (Victoria Mariners) of the Seattle Mariners and third baseman Brett Lawrie (Langley Blaze) of the Toronto Blue Jays. A preview of the Tritons, Blue Jays and Chiefs, with last year’s won-loss record in parentheses:

Whalley Chiefs (21-27) Only two players are back from a team that missed the playoffs by two games. Bryon Kennedy of Penticton takes over as

head coach, guiding a team with 18 players new to the PBL. “He knows his way around,” said general manager Paul Hargreaves of his new bench boss. “He has a nice way with the kids, he gets his message across.” Catcher Braeden Allemann, 17, and centre fielder Jordan McComb, 18, are the two veterans on the team. But the newcomers to the Chiefs aren’t a young group. Brandan Lim, 19, of Vancouver and Coquitlam’s Brandon Chernoff, 18, will be the anchors of a pitching staff which will also include Robbie Bevacqua, 17, and Daniel Teichman, 19. Relief pitchers include 18 year-olds Evan Rogers of Surrey and Brad Fitzsimmons of Chilliwack, and 17 year-olds Tyler Ang of Vancouver and Yuta Kikuzaki of North Delta. The strength of this group will be our arms,” said Hargreaves. “They’re not throwers, they’re pitchers. We should be in a lot of games because of our pitching.” Offence may be a problem early in the season, but Hargreaves is hoping Whalley batters will manufacture some runs early in the season until the hitters adjust to PBL pitching.

North Delta Blue Jays (20-28) Call it a new era. The Blue Jays will have a different look this season both on and off the

field. General manager Bob Burkmar, part of the Blue Jays since its inception 17 years ago, has stepped down as has last year’s head coach Jason Rich. Larry Waddell is the new general manager, bringing with him 15 years of administrative experience with Ladner Minor Baseball. Gerry White, a coach of three provincial and one Western Canadian championship teams in the past decade while with Ladner Minor Baseball, is the new head coach. He coached the Blue Jays team in the B.C. Junior Premier League, guiding the group to a second place finish and a playoff championship. Eight members of that Junior team are moving up to the senior squad for 2012, including Shoma Sasako of Surrey – who led his team in batting last season with a .352 average – Sodai Hoshi of North Delta (.290), Jordan Yamamoto (.288) and Bryan O’Hara (.267). Hoshi finished sixth among Junior PBL pitchers with a 1.37 earned run average, and will join a pitching staff that includes the club’s two returning players – Shane Wlodarczak of Richmond and Seven Van Vooght of North Delta. Wlodarczak was the Blue Jays Pitcher of the Year in 2011, with a 3.24 earned run average. His 49.2 innings pitched was the second highest among North Delta hurlers last year.

SECTION C0-ORDINATOR: RICK KUPCHUK (PHONE 604-575-5335)

White Rock Tritons (23-25) The White Rock Tritons have had about enough of scratching and clawing for one of the BC Premier Baseball League’s final playoff spots. This year, the junior baseball team is instead aiming for one of the league’s top spots after two years on the outside looking in when the post-season rolls around. Last year, the Tritons lost to the Okanagan Athletics in a one-game playoff that determined the final playoff participant. “We’re tired of fighting for eighth spot every year,” said Tritons head coach Russ Smithson, who enters his second season with the team and third with the organization after coaching the Junior Tritons in 2010. “We have a lot of returning senior players – we have 11 of them – so we’ll really need their leadership, but there’s no reason we can’t finish in the top three this season. “We’re ready to start winning.” They’ll rely heavily on their seniors, especially the trio of Alex Webb, Nathan Trueblood – both pitchers – and centre-fielder Jackson Temple. Other returning players include catcher Evan Douglas, and infielders/pitchers Adam Shumka, Tanner Sandstrom and Shay Buis. In the outfield, newcomers Kevin Irving, Cam Forbes and Max Koltai will battle for playing time in right and left field, as will Connor Kenwood and Cody Didyk, both of whom will also pitch. - with files from Nick Greenizan, Black Press

Eagles season has ended

Got a good stor y!

BCHL team loses series 4-1 to Powell River by Nick Greenizan FOR THE second time in as many years – and the third time in the last four – the Surrey Eagles’ hockey season has ended at the hands of the Powell River Kings. Monday at Powell River’s Hap Parker Arena, the Eagles failed to score in a 3-0 Game 5 loss, dropping the series 4-1. Kings forward Evan Richardson – who scored three times and added an assist in the five-game series – opened the scoring for the home side Monday night, just 3:13 into the game, and teammate Daniel Schuler doubled the Powell River lead 15 minutes later on the power play. Neither team scored in the second period, and Kings forward Cohen Adair scored an insurance goal with 3:05 left in the game. The Eagles failed to get any pucks past Powell River goalie Sean Maguire, who stopped 27 shots to earn his second shutout of the series. Powell River now moves on to battle the Penticton Vees for the Fred Page Cup and the title of BC Hockey League champion. The Eagles, meanwhile, return home wondering what happened to derail a season that, at many times throughout the year, had them sitting second only to the record-setting Vees among the BCHL elite. They finished second to Powell River in the regular season, though they led the Coastal Conference for much of the year. “It’s tough, because the end of the season always comes so abruptly. You’re always planning to move on, and win the next game, so when it ends, it ends pretty quick,” Eagles coach Matt Erhart said. “We battled hard, we had a great season, but we just came up a little

bit short.” The Eagles haven’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since winning the Fred Page Cup in 2004/05, though that streak is a bit misleading, considering this post-season had one less playoff round than usual; under normal circumstances, the conference finals would be the third round. And while the Eagles thrived with a balanced scoring attack during the season – their leading scorer, Tyler Morley, was just 24th in league scoring but they had five players with at least 15 goals – the offence all but dried up against the Kings in Round 2. Twice Surrey was shutout by 3-0 scores, and they managed just six goals over the five-game series. Erhart was not one to make excuses for the lack of offence, but did point out that missing so many regular contributors due to injury did not help. Forward Brandon Morley missed the entire series, fellow forwards Brandon Tanev and Alex Hagen missed three games each, and defenceman Matt Cronin and checking forward Colton Mackie each missed two games. “We were banged up, for sure,” Erhart said. “But we still had chances. In our two games at home, I think we had 93 shots. We just hit posts, didn’t get the bounces, and just had a lack of finish around the net.” The Eagles will lose a good chunk of the team’s core players to the NCAA next season, including team captain Tyler Morley (AlaskaFairbanks), all-star goaltender Andrew Hunt (Clarkson), top-pairing defenceman Steve Koshey (Alabama-Huntsville), Tanev (Providence), Cronin (Merrimack),

Hagen (St. Lawrence) and Brayden Jaw (Harvard). Returnees include blue-liners Devon Toews – who led the team in playoff scoring and whom Erhart calls one of the BCHL’s best defencemen – and Beau Orser, and forwards Sean McGovern,

Demico Hannoun, Brandon Morley and Eric Chevrier. “It’s kind of the same every year – you lose guys and people wonder how you’re going to replace them,” Erhart said. “But that’s the fun of junior hockey. We’ll have a good veteran group coming back.”

How to steer a tarantula Founder of Cinemazoo publishes his biography by Dan Ferguson

A

s a sickly six-year-old growing up in Toronto, Cinemazoo founder Gary Oliver became fascinated by animals, especially snakes and insects, after he was temporarily paralyzed by rheumatic fever. While he was recovering, the weakened Oliver would watch “Wild Kingdom,” the television series hosted by zoologist Marlin Perkins, who would famously hang back and narrate the action while sidekick Jim Fowler tackled the physical stuff. “I didn’t want to be Marlin,” Oliver says in his just-published biography, “Cinemazoo, my urban safari,” written with author Wendy Bancroft. “I wanted to be Jim, down in the swamp wrestling the snake.” It would take him several decades to get there. In his book, Oliver describes a career path with many sudden swerves. Among other things, he’s been a fashion photographer, a calvary trooper with the Governor General’s horse guards and a bingo caller at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. There have been a lot of ups and downs. At different times in his life, Oliver has been homeless, a self-employed artists’ studio manager and a well-paid white-collar office worker (as a graphic artist for the National Cash Register company, where he designed logos and business forms), to mention just a few examples. Through it all, Oliver has remained fascinated by things with scales that crawl and slither as well as the more cuddly, furry sort of animals. It was not an obsession everyone in his life has shared. In one passage in his book, Oliver relates how an ex-wife used a can of pesticide to kill some “really cute” snakes in his home terrarium. The book goes on to describe the moment of inspiration that led to the creation of Cinemazoo in Vancouver when a model Oliver knew asked him to update her portfolio by including a few poses with a camera-friendly tabby cat. That was when he got the idea of supplying animals to the booming B.C. film industry. His first experience wrangling animals for “Hollywood North” was the Mel Gibson/Goldie Hawn comedyadventure Bird on a Wire. He’s since gone on to supply animals for other films including “Look Who’s Talking Now,” “Sisterhood” and “Snakes On A Plane.” Some Cinemazoo animals have been featured in commercials for companies such as Telus, Fido and ICBC, not to mention various music videos and album covers. In his book, Oliver reveals a few tricks of the animal wrangler’s trade, such as gently steering a tarantula – a spider that hates breezes – using a can of compressed air. “If I do it slowly, he’ll move away slowly. If I give it a good blast, away he goes.” He also writes about working with poisonous snakes, and his decision to be less hands-on in order to avoid the fate of Steve Irwin, the well-known late Australian television host known as the “Crocodile hunter” who died in 2006 after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while filming

underwater. “I think Steve was an amazing enthusiast about animals als − he loved them with a passion that was unbelievable − but he took his chances,” Oliver writes. “I think everyone who knew him expected that he was probably going to go out working with animals.” Oliver has had his own near-misses. He describes how he once used a spray of hot water from a faucet to free his hands from the mouth of an 18-foot python that was trying to swallow him whole. He doesn’t blame the snake, saying she was attracted by the smell of a Guinea pig on his hands. Since then, he’s made it a rule to always wash his hands going from one animal to another. “I know I said I wanted to be like Jim, but frankly, I’ve learned being right in there with the animals can hurt,” he says. The book was actually completed four years ago by Bancroft, but remained unpublished because the person who bankrolled it went into a police “witness protection program,” Oliver says. Literally. It was a television producer who wanted to make Oliver the host of his own wildlife show, and thought a biography would be a good first step in building his profi fille. Eventually, Bancroft managed to contact the erstwhile producer through the RCMP and convinced them to turn the rights over to her. That delay is why the book happens to skim over the more recent, tumul-

Earning4learning ends April 10 SCHOOLS ARE STILL in the hunt in Guildford Town Centre’s earning4learning contest, where shoppers earn a point for their favourite school for every dollar spent and registered. When the contest ends on April 10, the top 20 schools will receive cash prizes totalling $15,750. First prize is $5,000 while schools finishing 16th through 20th will each receive $250. More than 30 schools are vying for the 16th through 20th spots. “It’s amazing how close the race is in a bunch of spots,” said Rosavel Scott, marketing director at Guildford. “For those 30 schools which have 200 to 1,100 points, it’s still up for grabs and a last-week push could make a difference in getting that $250 prize. This is very exciting and fun.” For first place, Holly Elementary currently has an enormous lead for the grand prize of $5,000. With more than 34,000 points, Holly is comfortably ahead of second place Old Yale Road at around 13,000. But anything can happen if consumers at any school decide to make a big push. Scott said buyers have alternatives. “You can build up points by liking our contest page on Facebook,” says Scott. “You can also buy gift cards and can get any of your old receipts dating back to Feb. 15 and bring those in for validation for your favourite school as well. But they have to be registered by April 10.” Those interested can get more information and check a school’s point totals on the Guildford page on Facebook. Click on the earning4learning apple logo and like it in order to see the latest point totals and contest rules. An independent firm will verify results before the final announcement of all winners is made.

From Kwantlen to New York

S

arah Jackson, an undergraduate student in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s journalism program, made news in New York with a 10-week winter internship at MSNBC where she helped produce live television. In 2010, Jackson received Kwantlen’s prestigious “John Reiss Award in Journalism,” named after the executive producer of MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has also won seven other student awards and has been on the Dean’s Honour Roll six times. After Jackson sent her internship application to John Reiss, her talent was recognized right away and she was invited to MSNBC’s New York studio to join his adrenaline-driven team of top producers and technicians. Jackson’s jumped right into her role as Hardball’s intern; soon after her arrival in New York, she was fact-checking the news stories scheduled for that evening’s broadcast. The next few hours would see her digging frantically through background research, relevant news clips, photos and videos to accompany the stories. During the live broadcast, Jackson assisted with coordinating the communication and activities of the studio guests. When asked what she learned from her internship at MSNBC, Jackson said “Humility – I was so impressed by the way people in such high positions were kind and respectful to everyone, even to people in unimportant positions like me. Everyone worked together as a team. “I walked away realizing that if such powerful people don’t act like they are more important than others, why would I?” Apart from being a full-time student at Kwantlen, Jackson is a freelance reporter.

Kwantlen student Sarah Jackson had a 10-week internship at the New York studio of MSNBC. Her work has appeared in several Lower Mainland newspapers and websites. Jackson is also the media coordinator for the Acting Together-CURA project at Kwantlen which is aimed at reducing youth violence and youth gang involvement. In her role she maintains and updates the project website, creates new content, takes videos and photos of the project events, and also compiles research on the media portrayal of youth violence and gangs for the project.

by Jeff Nagel SURREY AND Delta underperformed most other B.C. cities in this year’s annual Earth Hour challenge to reduce electricity consumption. Surrey recorded a 0.9-per-cent reduction in power use Saturday, down from 1.5 per cent last year, while Delta also dropped to 1.2 per cent from 2.1 per cent in 2011. BC Hydro said the province cut power use 1.67 per cent, saving 121 megawatt hours of electricity

– the equivalent of turning off nine million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs. “If people applied the same simple conservation measures for even one hour every day for the whole year, the combined savings would power close to 4,000 homes for an entire year,” said Hydro’s acting CEO Charles Reid. “Next year, during Earth Hour when smart meters are fully deployed, people will be able to track their own results from the day before through a secure online portal to help them realize how
