Surrey MP thirdhighest spender in B.C. Leaflets are to blame, Nina Grewal says by Tricia Leslie A SURREY MP is among the top three biggest spenders in B.C. for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, according to the latest members’ expenditures report. Fleetwood-Port Kells MP Nina Grewal spent $543,564 on items such as travel, employees’ salaries and service contracts, hospitality and events, advertising, printing and (constituency) offices. The average B.C. MP spent $487,012 last fiscal year, which is higher than the national average of $432,938 per MP, since Members of Parliament from this Nina Grewal province have the farthest to travel to reach the House of Commons in Ottawa. Grewal spent $56,551 more than the average B.C. MP, and $110,626 more than the average Canadian MP. The biggest B.C. spender was Cariboo-Prince George MP Richard Harris, with $585,074 in expenses, with former Vancouver-South MP MP Ujjal Dosanjh coming in just below that amount at $584,966.

Former football star guilty of 2 sex assaults Surrey’s Josh Boden played with the Rams by Sheila Reynolds SURREY’S JOSH BODEN, a former member of the B.C. Lions football team, has been found guilty of two sexual assaults. The 24-year-old was convicted in Vancouver Provincial Court last Friday. Boden was arrested – following a violent struggle – after Vancouver Police reported seeing him fondling a woman at two Vancouver SkyTrain stations in August 2009. After his arrest, he was also charged with sexually assaulting a woman during a separate incident. On Friday, Boden was also found guilty of assault a police officer and obstructing a police officer. Before he turned pro, the 6’1” Boden was a standout player Josh Boden for for the thenSurrey Rams (now the Langley Rams) of the Canadian Junior Football League. In his 2005 season with the Rams, Boden was the B.C. Football Conference’s rookie of the year, MVP, and best special teams player. He also was invited to the B.C. Lions training camp. In 2007, Boden made the Lions roster as a backup wide receiver, but was released by the team after he was charged with domestic assault and robbery in 2008 – charges that were later dropped. Boden was picked up by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but cut after one game. He will now undergo a psychiatric assessment and pre-sentencing report before being sentenced in 2012.

Grewal: To reconsider cost of printing flyers From Page 1

MP Russ Hiebert: Expenses are down.

In a phone interview Tuesday from Ottawa, Grewal noted this is her fourth term in office, and that in past years, “my expenditures were in the middle of the pack.” “Each year, my budget is not only balanced, but there is a healthy surplus,” she said. This year, however, the area where Grewal spent more than any other B.C. MP was in the printing category, on pamphlets that are commonly known as “10 percenters.” Called 10 percenters because the quantity produced must not exceed 10 per cent of the households in a riding, MPs can produce as many of them as they want as long as the content is substantially different each time. MPs were previously allowed to send the one-page, usually partisan leaflets to households

outside of their constituencies free of charge. Those rules changed with a 2010 Board of Internal Economy decision that scaled back the way MPs can distribute the flyers, but the partisan pamphlets are still allowed. Still, Grewal spent more than any other MP in the province on printing the flyers – $47,910 worth. Several other B.C. MPs refrained from spending any money in the same category; others ranged from $350 to the second-highest behind Grewal – $43,044 on 10 percenters spent by Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission MP Randy Kamp. Grewal said she uses the flyers to communicate with her constituents. “My constituents tell me they want to be informed and I’m keeping them well-informed,” she said. She concurred that the 10 percenters are

“where the fault lies” for her high expenditures. “After every budget, we review our spending. I will certainly be reconsidering how much is spent on 10 percenters,” she said. Dosanjh, who lost to the Conservatives in the 2011 federal election, spent $213,740 last year on travel for the “member, designated traveller and dependents.” In 2010, South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale MP Russ Hiebert drew media fire for defending the fact he spent $214,360 on travel for himself and his family during the 2008-2009 fiscal year, a difference of just over $600 compared to Dosanjh. Hiebert’s overall expenses this past fiscal year are below the B.C. and national average at $425,711. He spent $91,438 on travel and $14,627 on 10 percenters. Dosanjh and Harris did not respond to The Leader’s requests for interviews.

Homes seized in Delta pot grow-op raids Black Press

Four people charged

A PAIR OF marijuana grow operations have been raided in Delta – two

crops that yielded more than 2,600 plants, according to Delta Police. On Oct. 20, two homes in North Delta were raided, the first in the 8600 block of Delcrest Drive, where 140 plants were found, and the other in the 10700 block of Doncaster Crescent, where 2,341 plants were found. Police say the combined value of the marijuana plants seized is about $160,000. As a result of the investigation, the two homes were seized under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and four people have been charged. The four Delta people charged in connection with the raids are Lam Son Nguyen, 46, Ngoc Thi Nguyen, 42, Hoang Nguyen, 48, and Huong Thi Xuan Bui.

of Delta employee Kip Gaudry will return to Vancouver Provincial Court in January to face a sexual assault charge dating back to the 1970s. Gaudry, 60, was scheduled to plead guilty to allegations of indecent assault on a female in Winnipeg in 1973, but the case has now been put forward to Jan. 11. The former director of engineering for Delta

is currently serving an 18-month sentence for possession of child pornography. He had worked in Delta since 2001 and quit his job in 2009 after police searched his home and office and seized computers and hard drives. They found thousands of images and videos of young children being abused. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced last January. “It’s really fun because you get the opportunity to experiment,” she says. Students at Frank Hurt are also using iPads in English classes. Recently, Grade 8s were assigned to represent friendship in a multi-media way. Abdul Khattab, 13, wrote a story called Within Dreams. But embedded in the story’s text are images that when clicked on, create an accompanying sound. For example, while a picture of a fall-coloured tree has sounds of crunching leaves, a photo of a night scene makes cricket noises. “It’s really a lot better because it really comes alive,” says Khattab. There are 12 schools involved in Surrey’s Innovative Learning Designs Project (Digital Integration Focus), a pilot program that began this fall. Other participating high schools include Guildford Learning Centre, Johnston Heights, Kwantlen Park and Princess Margaret. Elementary schools include Cindrich, Georges Vanier, Hazelgrove, Hillcrest, Maple Green, M.J. Norris, and Pacific Grade 8 student Abdul Heights. The district purchased Khattab. the iPads for the program. Each school applied to participate in the the pilot and will keep the iPads. The use of the technology at each school varies. For example, George Vanier has targeted early learning and is using iPads with students with special needs. At Johnston Heights, where the devices are used in Grade 11 social studies, math, leadership and English classes, it’s the teachers who say they’ve been transformed – not so much due to the technology itself, but because of the increased collaboration and integration of curriculum Eric Bonfield, a humanities teacher at Frank Hurt, is working with two high school classes – one using iPads and one without. He feels it’s too early to tell whether the technology is making a difference. Students with iPads definitely have a more constant access to research and the opportunity to represent their learning differently, Bonfield says. But he’s not certain what it will all mean for teaching and learning and critical thinking. “We’ll see if it provides depth to the curriculum. Is it a serious tool that could be used? What can we do with it and where can we go with it?” sreynolds@surreyleader.com

impaired driving, Gaumont noted, from using unmarked vehicles to hunt drivers who have been drinking, to setting up on side roads near a roadside check to catch drivers attempting to escape police scrutiny. Roadblocks also move around constantly. Gaumont said police hopes tweets will let drivers who drink know police are out there looking for them, and that they’ll choose to take a taxi, transit, or a sober driver instead of getting behind the wheel. Dave Teixeira, a Metro Vancouver social media and communications consultant, thinks some people are over-estimating the online tool’s potential use to avoid roadblocks. “Number one – you have to be looking at it. Number two, you have to be following someone who is tweeting about roadblocks,” Teixeira said.

RCMP SUPT. Norm Gaumont has two words for

Metro Vancouver residents who plan to tweet CounterAttack roadblock locations on Twitter. Go ahead. “If people want to tweet and let people know we’re out there looking for impaired drivers, go ahead,” the head of Lower Mainland traffic services said Wednesday, in the wake of media reports about Twitter being used in cities across Canada to warn drivers about the checkpoints. “I think it’s great. The reality is, all you do is (raise the) profile the roadside checks.” (Drivers should not text or tweet while behind the wheel, however, or they could face a $167 fine). While he doesn’t think it’s a good idea to help drinking drivers elude the police, he notes that prior to Twitter, drivers had other ways of warning other motorists about roadside checks. “This is the 21st century way of flashing your headlights to warn others,” he said, adding CB radios were another way drivers used to give each other the head’s up. Warnings about speed traps or HOV lane checks are given out all the time in traffic reports, Teixeira added. Whether you’re a social media aficionado or not, Gaumont said the best way to avoid worrying about police roadblocks is to plan ahead for a safe ride home, whether it be a cab, Operation Red Nose, transit or a designated driver. reporter@surrreyleader.com

alarms to ensure they are present and functioning properly,” Deputy Chief Karen Fry of the Surrey Fire Service said in a release Monday. Surrey Fire Services is offering the following tips: • Smoke alarms need to be installed and tested regularly on every floor. • Candles should be monitored and used with extreme caution and blown out when unattended. • Do not leave the kitchen unattended when cooking. • Space heaters should be kept away from flammable materials (curtains, decorations etc.). • Extension cords should be used properly and not overloaded. • Keep live Christmas trees watered and away from potential fire sources. • Ensure Christmas lights are working properly. Home safety inspections are available to residents upon request. If you are in need of a smoke alarm, Surrey Fire Services will provide and install a battery-powered smoke alarm at no cost. To arrange a Home Safe fire safety inspection, contact the Surrey Fire Services at 604-543-6780. kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

Surrey firefighters has sparked a call for extra precautions among Surrey residents. Over Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Surrey fire crews attended six fires of various types. Twenty-five people were displaced from their homes, which in all experienced more than $1 million in damages. Fortunately no one was killed, however, three people were hospitalized. Surrey Fire Services is urging people to be cautious this year. More than two-thirds of fires in Surrey occur in residential homes. The number of fires are down in Surrey, but the winter brings on a number of blazes that are considered preventable. The lion’s share of Surrey house fires occur in Newton and Whalley and the majority of those start in the kitchen, according to a study called Residential Fires in Surrey, B.C. 1988 to 2007. The study also found that about two-thirds of homes which caught fire had smoke alarms installed, and half of those were not activated. “It is important for all residents to make sure they regularly test their

What a shame, throwing away food Grateful for care

YESTERDAY I once again cleaned up your

mess. You dumped about 100 pounds of food along the hydro path that runs between 128 Street and 132 Street. What a mess it was, too. For some reason, you disposed of raw chicken, frozen appetizers, breaded chicken breasts, chicken nuggets, shrimp rings, quiches, salami and more. I can only assume that your freezer failed and the food had

spoiled. That should be the only reason to dispose of at least $200 worth of food. I wonder why you decided to haul this heavy load out to the hydro lines in the dark of night to get rid of it. What is wrong with your garbage can? By the time I found your mess, the animals had already been at it, spreading it everywhere. The area where you dumped this is enjoyed by dog walkers, cyclists, joggers and people out

for a leisurely walk. It really makes a walk hard to enjoy with smelly, rotting food lying about, especially when you are trying to walk a dog past the aroma. My dog managed to gobble down several chicken nuggets before I could stop him. It’s fortunate that he didn’t get sick. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

Surely, we can do something more meaningful with the lives and minds of our children? During my 40-year education career, not one student has known the origins of the multitude of global celebrations of “light” in December. The word “solstice” comes as a surprise to most teachers. However, no one ever has trouble discussing the stuff they wanted, were tired of shopping for, were hoping not to get... I am exhausted by being asked about shopping, hearing complaints of stress due to shopping and family demands, and then being told how this a season of peace and love. ON DEC. 12, my son had a medical

emergency requiring transport to the hospital. I would like to say “thank you” to all involved in his care – the 911 operator, the Surrey firefighters, the paramedics, the ER staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the staff at child and youth services, as well as all of the support staff. As a parent, it was terrifying to see my son in crisis, but the empathy, professionalism, and compassion of each of you made a rough day better. I often hear people complaining about ER wait times, poor medical services, etc. My children were all born at SMH and have always received excellent care from welltrained staff. As I watched the staff work on my son, I couldn’t help but think of how grateful I felt for our health care system. Yes, hospital emergency rooms are very busy and there may be long wait times for treatment of issues not deemed to be life-threatening but let’s have some gratitude for what we do have. We all have a responsibility to help alleviate the burden on our health care system. Ask yourself, “Is my current condition one that can be treated by my family doctor?” Kelly McCrea, Surrey

Pedestrians not careful I THINK WE need to have the RCMP remind pedestrians, especially seniors, how dangerous it can be to cross the road when they don’t have the right of way. I live in Guildford and we now have two accidents in the same week where seniors are crossing on a wet and dark evening in a crosswalk but on the driver’s green. It is really unfortunate with what has happened to the seniors here lately, especially the one in my complex that I went to try and help (and am having a tough time dealing with). Pedestrians/seniors who are jaywalking or crossing against the light, wearing dark clothes when it’s dark and raining, are really bad combinations. Sabrina Hingston

RE: “SEXUAL assault charges laid

against Ladner teacher.” It is ridiculous that an offender that has allegedly committed multiple offences to those under the age of 16 should be released under such mediocre terms. I myself am a 16-year-old girl and I find it incredibly alarming that the police would warrant a bail following these concerning incidences – a high school teacher, no less. More extensive measures should be conducted surrounding the cases of high school staff, and allowing immediate release following an arrest is certainly not a substantial method.

lawyer is seeking a jail sentence of six months to a year for a notorious demolition contractor who repeatedly exposed his unprotected workers to asbestos contamination. Last year, Arthur Moore defied repeated orders from WorkSafe BC and then continued his Surrey-based asbestos and drywall removal business in violation of a B.C. Supreme Court injunction granted last August that indefinitely barred him from operating. He was found in contempt of court. “Asbestos kills. It was the leading killer of workers in British Columbia in 2009, responsible for 44 per

of the price charged by competitors who take required safety precautions when dealing with asbestos. He claimed to take samples and get reports certifying buildings asbestos-free before demolition. But the hazardous material reports were forged, using letterhead stolen from legitimate labs, to hide the danger on his jobs. Past employees testified they were told to “run away” if WorkSafe BC officers showed up at a work site. Moore operated at least 15 job sites in Surrey, Richmond and Delta last fall, using names including Tri City Hazmat, Surrey Hazmat and Effective Contracting to skirt the injunction, according to court evidence.

Nielsen asked the judge to consider weighing Moore’s sentence against the possibility that his contempt could result in the “eventual death of those he knowingly exposed to asbestos.” WorkSafe BC inspectors found that Moore used teenagers as young as 14 to demolish asbestosladen houses without providing them with any protection. He recruited young students in need of cash and hired recovering addicts from recovery houses in Surrey. According to court evidence, Moore quoted low rates to demolish old houses – a fraction

REGIONAL BRIEFS

Legal aid action vowed LEGAL AID lawyers are threatening an escalating strike to put more pressure on the province to increase funding after staging rallies in several cities this week. Lawyers who act as legal aid duty counsel for people who have been arrested and can’t afford a lawyer say they will withdraw those services for one week in January, two weeks in February, three weeks in March and all of April. Legal aid funding has been cut by 27 per cent over the last decade, from $96 million in 2001 to $69.7 million. The government takes in about

$100 million annually in through its provincial tax on legal fees, but the money is not directed toward legal aid, which the tax was created to fund in the first place. Critics say many people before the courts who previously received legal aid assistance are now forced to represent themselves, causing more slowdowns in an already severely congested legal system. B.C. Attorney General Shirley Bond said thousands of lowincome people are still being helped and the province’s new Family Law Act – which encour-

MORE THAN 130 B.C. aboriginal groups say they now have created an “unbroken wall” of opposition to oil sands exports through their territories. The groups say they’re fighting exports of tar sands crude via either Enbridge’s proposed new pipeline across northern B.C. or Kinder Morgan, which already ships oil through Metro Vancouver and onto tankers out of Burrard Inlet and wants to more than double the capacity of its existing Trans Mountain pipeline. The Union of B.C. Indian chiefs has endorsed the Save the Fraser and Coastal First Nations declarations by aboriginal groups that claim to prohibit the movement of oil sands crude by pipeline or tankers in B.C. “North or south, it makes no difference,” said Chief Jackie Thomas of Saik’uz First Nation. “We have banned oil pipelines and tankers using our

laws, and we will defend our decision using all the means at our disposal.”

Reptile showman loses court challenge A COURT challenge seeking to overturn B.C.’s ban on exotic pets like large snakes has been rejected. Jozef Demcak and his wife Bibiana, who now live in Surrey, wanted to resume their touring reptile road show that was their livelihood for years. A B.C. Supreme Court Justice rejected their challenge and request for compensation, but said they could request B.C.’s director of wildlife to give them a permit to exhibit their six Burmese pythons and black-throated monitor lizard. The reptiles are currently housed at Cinemazoo in South Surrey, where the Demcaks live in a trailer.

National park on Bowen scrapped PARKS CANADA has abandoned its effort to create a new national park on Bowen Island after the idea was defeated in a Nov. 19 referendum. Fifty-five per cent of voters said no to turning Metro Vancouver’s Crippen Regional Park and other lands on the island into a national park reserve. Concern about increased tourist traffic, congestion and reduced local autonomy were key issues for islanders.

A few minutes today, peace-of-mind tomorrow. A new year is almost upon us, which usually means New Year resolutions, looking to the future, making new plans and organizing goals for the year ahead. It’s not uncommon to find financial security near the top of the list. Protecting your family and your belongings first is a natural priority, and there are simple ways you can do that. One step to ensure you are protected is to do a yearly review of your home insurance policy against the changes that may have taken place since you took it out or last made upgrades to it.

t :PV IBWF MBVODIFE B TNBMM business and operate it out of your home t :PV WF SFUJSFE BOE TQFOE part of the year down south, leaving your home vacant for several months of the year t :PV IBWF BEEFE PS SFNPWFE a wood stove t :PV BSF GJOBMMZ VOEFSUBLJOH the big home renovation you’ve been planning for years

INSURANCE OUTLOOK HOME INSURANCE WITH LORI TAYLOR

Letting your insurance provider know what has changed helps them provide you with better service and support. It can ensure that you are not unnecessarily overpaying or under-insured. If all your details and information are accurate and up-to-date it can also help speed up the claims process. That’s why it is important to talk to your insurer about big life changes. These changes could be considered as any change that may affect the level of risk associated with your home. In other words, as your life has changed, so may have the needs for your home. For example: t :PV BSF OPX SFOUJOH PVU ZPVS basement or the occupancy of your home has changed

t :PV IBWF upgraded the electrical system in your home

A change can subject your home to more, or even less, risk and could mean additional premiums may be owed to the insurance company or new discounts may now be available to you. Either way, to ensure your home and belongings are properly protected, it is important to notify your insurance company when things have changed. When you get your renewal document, contact a BCAA Insurance Advisor to review your coverage and ensure it matches your circumstances and meets your needs. Should you have any questions, or wish to learn more about insurance and coverage that protects your family and your belongings, give us a call. We’re always happy to help. Alliance ‘embarrassed’ by lack of city letter Group wants to stop truck traffic on 32 Avenue by Tricia Leslie A GROUP OF concerned

citizens who want 32 Avenue removed as a designated truck route appeared as a delegation before the TransLink board last Wednesday morning, bolstered by the fact the City of Surrey supported them with a motion at its Oct. 17 council meeting. But the 32nd Avenue Community Alliance found that support was not in writing when they made their presentations and speeches to TransLink board members. “There was supposed to be a letter from the City of Surrey, and that wasn’t there,” said Pauline Cremin, a member of the alliance. “We were really quite embarrassed.” General Manager of Engineering Vincent Lalonde said the actual motion at council was to refer (the issue) to the transportation committee, which was supposed to meet Nov. 9 due to a lack of quorum (enough people

to vote). No reasons were given as to why there weren’t enough people at that meeting. The next transportation committee meeting is tentatively set for Dec. 19, when the mayor will appoint a chair for the committee, since it’s the first after elections, he said. Lalonde said the city needs to “clarify what the TransLink board wants from the city,” and how they expect to assess the city’s request (to have 32 Avenue removed as a designated truck route). Minutes from the Oct. 17 meeting – taken from the city’s website – confirm letters were supposed to be written by the city, but no timeframe was indicated. The minutes also say that Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts recommended the alliance make their presentation directly to the TransLink board. “In terms of TransLink, the City of Surrey will provide the delegation with both letters and supplemental information regarding historical requests

free teeth

made to the ministry,” the minutes state. “Staff were asked to send a letter of endorsement to the TransLink board on behalf of council requesting a delegation for Ms. Cremin.” The minutes also say council requested “that this item will be included as an ongoing item on the transportation committee agenda,” along with the issue of diesel trucks, which is also listed on the Metro Vancouver agenda. Lalonde noted there has been progress since the Oct. 17 council meeting, since Watts sent a letter to the Ministry of Transportation asking that ministry gravel trucks stop using the 32 Avenue route, which has been busy because of the South Fraser Perimeter Road project. About 15 to 25 per cent of the truck traffic were gravel trucks, Lalonde said, with many of those under ministry control. The ministry listened. “We went and re-assessed and found that in westbound traffic, there was a 34 per cent reduction,” he said.

Ticket proceeds benefiting VGH, UBC and GF Strong

Millionaire Lottery gives you choices The B.C. Children’s Hospital Dream Lottery takes place every fall, with proceeds going to supporting the funding of research at B.C. Children’s Hospital into the prevention, treatment and cure of childhood illnesses. Since its inception over a decade ago, the lottery has raised over $30 million. If you missed the Children’s Hospital Dream Lottery this year, you still have a chance to do some good with a bit of gambling this holiday season. The VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation’s Millionaire Designer Home Lottery is taking place right now, with ticket proceeds going towards supporting Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. Tickets purchased before midnight on Dec. 24 are eligible for the Early Bird prize of a

Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Cayman R, or you can choose cash instead. Final deadline for ticket sales is midnight on Jan. 10. The Grand Prize includes your choice of a 5,200 square foot ocean view home in White Rock designed by celebrated designer Kelly Deck, a fully furnished Vancouver home on Main Street or $2.4 million in cash or gold bullion. The Millionaire Lottery is B.C.’s biggest home lottery, with prizes that total over $4.6 million. Since its start, the lottery has raised over $41 million. Tickets are $100 for one, two for $175, three for $250 or eight for $500. They are available online at millionairelottery.com, by calling 604-602-5848, at either of the Grand Prize show homes, at VGH or at any London Drugs.

Village living attracts Global News sports anchor

Lottery winner picks ParkLane home by Kerry Vital

After winning the grand prize in this year’s B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation Dream Lottery, Global News sports anchor Barry Deley had a tough choice to make. As the winner, he and his family were given the choice of several different prize homes or cash. He chose an estate home at ParkLane Homes’ Headwater at Bedford Landing. ParkLane teamed up with the Dream Lottery this past summer, says Marketing Coordinator Anna Warshawski. Deley’s win was announced live on Global BC TV, with his coworkers reacting in disbelief. He has since been featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and the video of his win is a viral hit on YouTube. Deley and his wife Katherine have been long-time supporters of Children’s Hospital and the Dream Lottery after their daughter Eden was diagnosed with leukemia seven years ago. She is now healthy, and she and her sister

have recently been accepted to the Fort Langley Fine Arts School. The Deleys also have a baby son. The five-bedroom single-family house is over 4,000 square feet, and with the other prizes included with the home, worth over $2.1 million. Each home at Headwater is situated on a waterfront lot, and located within walking distance from the centre of Fort Langley. “Headwater homes are the only ... true waterfront lots at Bedford Landing,” says Warshawski. Amazing features such as a fully finished basement and a spa-like ensuite bathroom are just two of the reasons Deley and his family chose the home. Other gorgeous features include

vaulted ceilings in the master suite, engineered hardwood and tile flooring throughout the main floor and oversized windows that let natural light pour in. The kitchens at Headwater are particularly impressive, with an open

plan layout designed for cozy family gatherings, large celebrations and anything in between. Traditional shaker-style cabinets are complemented by your choice of classic granite or continued on page 2

Our entire family is very excited to move into our new dream home,” says Children’s Hospital Foundation Dream Lottery winner Barry Deley.

G Inside Track ...with Dan Jukich The 2011 O’Brien Awards sponsored by Standardbred Canada are being held on January 28 at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario. That’s when the winning candidates for the O’Brien Award of Horsemanship and the Armstrong Breeder of the Year Award will be unveiled. The only ‘western flair’ in the running is our good friend and Fraser Downs regular visitor Keith Clark, the Hall of Fame owner/trainer/driver who is regularly described as the “most successful harness horseman in Alberta history”. Keith is up against Guy Gagnon (Quebec) and Marc Campbell (Prince Edward Island) for the 2011 O’Brien Award of Horsemanship. In the Armstrong Breeder of the Year category it is an all-Ontario competition involving Seelster Farms, Glenn Van Camp and Warrawee Farms. The two other O’Brien Awards are for Trainer of the Year and Driver of the Year. It will be a busy – and long – night at the Black Tie Gala with a total of 17 Awards being distributed, 13 of those paying tribute to premier horses this past season for their accomplishments. Someone who knows my family well copied me the other day a bulletin from Standardbred Canada with the headline: Wanted: National Anthem Singer. The opening paragraph went like this: “Are you a talented, enthusiastic vocalist that enjoys performing in front of large crowds at special events or concerts? If this sounds like, how would like to sing the National Anthem at the 2011 O’Brien Awards?” I just happen to have a sister – Teresa Fierro – a music teacher who sings the National Anthem as well as anyone I’ve ever heard. (Hey, it’s family … I’m allowed to say that!) I haven’t brought it up to Teresa, however. Standardbred Canada says the successful applicant will receive two tickets to the Awards Dinner and accommodation at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel. There’s no mention of airfare and being big brother with the big idea, guess who’d be on the hook? djukich@fraserdowns.com

Ellie King’s The Sword In The Stone rolls into Surrey Arts Centre Theatre (13750 88 Ave.) for a Dec. 16-31 run. Pantomime connoisseurs who like their seasonal treat – like their candies – with a distinctly British flavour will no doubt wish to sample the version served up by King’s Surrey-based Royal Canadian Theatre Company. Students’ art highlights classic Christmas tale Limited edition book supports Surrey libraries Black Press THE ARTWORK of three Surrey students is featured in a limited-edition version of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, produced by Guildford Town Centre in support of Surrey libraries. “We are very excited about this project, said Peggy White, the mall’s general manager. “What a wonderful way to show what great things our youth are doing, give them the chance to create artwork for their portfolios and at the same time support a worthwhile cause – everybody wins. The artists who produced the storybook – under the direction of Sullivan Heights Secondary art teacher Marc Pelech – are Clayton Heights Secondary graduate Michelle Liu, Sandy Cheng, in Grade 12 at Fleetwood Park Secondary, and Shirley Liu, a Grade 12 student at Steveston-London Secondary.

Liu said the process began with selection of a Victorian style for the storyboard, and dividing up the cover and pages. “Bit by bit, we were able to solidify our designs for Santa, and keep details like the wallpaper and outfits consistent,â€? she said. “As we moved into the painting stage, I noticed each of us had very different styles, requiring us to mesh together a little‌ adapt to each other’s styles.â€? Each artwork took 10 to 15 hours to complete. Pelech, who also photographed and edited the artworks, said it’s the first time Surrey art students have produced an illustrated storybook for publication. The book is on sale at Guildford Town Centre customer service and all Surrey library branches for $10. The original artwork will be on display at the mall until Dec. 22, followed by a cheque presentation by the students and a reading of the story by Santa to children at the mall Dec. 23.

tune that the drummer for the powerpophardcore-punk quintet Fighting For Ithaca fancies – even the one about the drummer boy. “I general dislike them all,” says Maloney. “We love Christmas, but we hate Christmas music.” The band’s penchant for the season but aversion of its associated music prompted them to pen a carol-of-sorts of their own. Written and recorded in a span of two weeks, Partying with Santa is an upbeat, riffladen tale of getting old St. Nick so inebriated he misses the big day itself. Since its release last Friday, the song, which features on a 604 Records complication, has garnered more than 3,000 hits on YouTube. “It is quite a bit different from the traditional stuff,” says Maloney. “I don’t know if it’s something that can be played at churches for Christmas Eve services.” Drawing influence from bands such as Par-

Maloney says the band specifically wanted to be signed to 604 Records, an indie label owned by Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and Nickelback’s attorney Jonathan Simkin. “They are doing things a lot differently than other labels,” Maloney explains. “People now are all about singles and promoting yourself online. began in November 2010, when Maloney ran into Simkin and handed him a copy of the band’s second EP, Thanks For Waiting. Maloney heard back from Simkin but he was non-committal. So on Jan.1, the band decided “we are going to annoy the hell out of 604 Records.” They told their loyal fans to inundate the label with requests to sign them via Twitter and email. In five days, by Jan. 5, Simkin called to schedule a meeting. It took months to finalize the record deal. “We had to tell our fans to back down,” says Maloney. “We couldn’t really announce anything.” It helped that the band has spent the past year honing their sound, hard work reflected in the seven-song EP they just finished recording. The single ‘Last Chance’ will be out in January. “Everything before was loose and thrown together but now it’s more refined,” says Maloney. “We are still playing what we want to play but we now we are keeping in mind the listener and what they want to hear.” Although the change in approach might seem like the band is succumbing to pressure of commercial success, Fighting for Ithaca is quick to clarify its desire for mass appeal doesn’t mean a loss of double bass break-downs and guttural growls. “We really wanted to make as many people as possible like it, including us,” reassures Maloney. Now that they are signed and have already booked a slot to play Canadian Music Week in Toronto doesn’t mean Fighting for Ithaca will forget their fans. The boys will still go bowling with them, hang out and continue to be BFFs to the folks who buy their records. “We appreciate them because we know we wouldn’t be in the position we’re in without them,” says Maloney. “It wasn’t until the fans really got behind us that [604 Records] took notice.” Fighting for Ithaca plays two sold-out shows in Vancouver this week. Their Christmas song Partying with Santa is available on iTunes.

a B.C. Hockey Major Midget League (MML) playoff position. The Hawks defeated the Thompson Blazers in a two-game set, improving to 13-9 (won-lost) on the season. In fifth place in the 13-team MML, Valley West is now six points clear of the North Island Silvertips and Fraser Valley Bruins, who are tied for seventh place. Six teams will qualify for the playoffs. Three powerplay goals helped the Hawks erase a 4-2 deficit after 40 minutes in Saturday’s 5-4 win at the Langley Sportsplex. Mitchell Friesen of Surrey and Langley’s Daniell Lange led the Hawks attack with two goals and an assist each.

BOAZ JOSEPH / THE LEADER

Mitchell Friesen had a three-point game for the Valley West Hawks last weekend. Matthew Cox of White Rock scored once. In Sunday morning’s rematch at the Surrey

Sports and Leisure Complex, Valley West again trailed after two periods, but tallied six times in

the third period for a 9-5 victory. Surrey’s Ram Brar, who had two assists in Saturday’s win, paced the Hawks with a pair of goals and two helpers. White Rock’s Sam Chatterly also scored twice and added an assist. Lange, Latrell Charleson (Surrey), Cox and Josh Pollock (Langley) notched one goal each. Langley defenceman Jordan Klimek collected three assists, with brother Justin and Surrey skaters Rhett Willcox and Jerret Smith earning two each. Valley West heads to Kelowna next weekend for two games with the Okanagan Rockets, who are in sixth place, three points back of the Hawks.

Toews, an offensiveminded blue-liner, has eight points this season, his first in the BCHL. players suited up for the Kwantlen Eagles inaugural Grade 8 Girls Basketball Holiday Shoot-out last weekend. The two-day jamboree featured 18 teams and roughly 270 girls playing three or four games each at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Surrey campus and at Fleetwood Park Secondary. Swim records set by Kisser Sungod swimmer competes at Can Am competition

Black Press DANIELLE KISSER has set two national swim records. The 14 year-old member of the Delta Sungod Swim Club accomplished the feat while competing at the Para CanAm Championships in La Mirada California last weekend. Kisser, who had personal best times in every event, set the new standards in the women’s S6 classi-

fication in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley events. Her time of 3:51.98 was good for a bronze medal placing in the 200m individual medley race, while a time of 6:45.89 earned her a fourth place finish the 400m freestyle. She added another third place finish in the 100m back stroke, and was seventh in the 100m freestyle race. The results have lifted her to 14th place in the world rankings.

The Para Can Am Championships is staged twice a year to provide national level competition to swimmers. “These past Para CanAm Championships were of extra importance as Team Canada was earning spots for the Paralympic Games in London, 2012,” said Sungod head coach Steven Hitchings. “Danielle did her utmost to obtain the goal of earning spots for the Canadian team.”

REMPEL Mary With saddened hearts we announce that Mary Rempel passed away on December 9th, 2011, with her children Barbara and Robert and her daughter-in-law Jeannie by her side, and with the loving support of the hospital staff. Mary left our earthly home to meet with her loving husband Dan. Mary and Dan shared a wonderful marriage of 66 years, and we find comfort in knowing they can now share an eternity together in the presence of our Lord. Mary was a feisty and active woman, who blessed not only the lives of her husband and children, but also her community. Mary Rempel was born on 22nd Sep 31 in Beausejour Manitoba to Marie and Henry Reimer. Mary, one of 9 children, was predeceased by her husband Dan, her brother Conway, and her sisters Betty and Sarah. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Pashalis and husband Yiannis of Greece and her son Robert Rempel and wife Jeannie of Thunder Bay, her grandchildren Giorgos, Danny, Steve, Carrie Moore (Steve’s wife to be), Katrina and Jessica, her brothers Henry and Alvin, and her sisters Adina Klippenstein and Margaret Reimer. Following a life committed to the Lord, Mary helped not only in the church but also in the community with her good deeds. Having a lovely voice she sang in the church choir, not to mention that she aided the poor by working in soup kitchens, visited the sick and took an active interest in many organizations like the Fraser Valley and Langley Naturalists. In 1986, after having completed Grade 12 and returning to College, Mary graduated from Douglas College with a Certificate in Office Administration-Legal Secretarial Specialty. They started travelling both to see their son in Eastern Canada and their daughter in Greece. But on 31st October 2007, her husband Dan passed away and at this point there was a gradual decline in Mary’s health until, she, too, passed away on 09th Dec 2011. A viewing will take place at Woodlawn Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 7-9 pm. Interment: Hazelwood Cemetery 11:00 am on Thursday, December 15th, 2011 followed by A Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM at Sevenoaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Woodlawn Funeral Home (604) 853-2643
