KONY 2012 inspires Delta artist Sycra Yasin uses his skills to raise awareness of African warlord by Sheila Reynolds SYCRA YASIN was one of millions of people who saw the name cross his

computer screen last week: Kony. The name started popping up on social media sites such as Twitter on Tuesday and by Wednesday, was peppered on Facebook pages and debated on blog sites, with TV and other media reporting on the viral video that everyone seemed to be suddenly talking about. The stir was created by KONY 2012, a 30-minute movie by the non-profit group Invisible Children and filmmaker Jason Russell aimed at making Joseph Kony “famous” and have him arrested. Kony, the head of the Lord’s Resistance Army, is accused of terrorizing areas of Uganda for years, kidnapping children to use as soldiers and prostitutes, leaving Sycra Yasin a trail of torture and murder in his wake. After its release on YouTube last week, the slick documentary quickly racked up more than 50 million views in just two days.

“I’m not 100 per cent in favour of them (Invisible Children)... but I really like this idea of people all over the world getting together against – or for – something.”

New riot poster released Faces of 100 suspects blanket cities; more Surrey charges by Sheila Reynolds MORE THAN 340 volunteers and 70 police officers were on the streets in 19 B.C. cities – including Surrey and Delta – on Thursday, handing out 70,000 posters of suspected rioters. The posters feature images of 100 individuals, including five of the Integrated Riot Investigation Team’s (IRIT) “most wanted,” who are linked to the assault on Robert Mackay, who was attacked and beaten when he tried to stop looters from entering The Bay.

The poster is the second issued by police to help identify those who allegedly committed crimes last June in downtown Vancouver following the Vancouver Canucks’ Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup final. The first poster was issued last November. Delta Police (one of eight police agencies comprising IRIT) and volunteers took to the streets Thursday afternoon, with posters being handed out to students at South Delta, Delta and North Delta secondary schools. Police also announced Thursday that the Crown approved six more charges, two of which are against 19-year-old Surrey resident Mustafa Khan, who is charged with participating in a riot and mischief. Last Monday, the Vancouver Police Department said Surrey’s Emmanuel Alviar, 19, pleaded guilty to participating in a riot, with his sentencing hearing scheduled for May 3. Charges against seven others were also approved Monday, including three against 24-year-old Surrey resident Willmar OvandoRenderos, who is charged with participating in a riot, break and enter and disguise with intent. A total of 177 criminal charges have been laid against 67 suspects so far. Police have recommended 432 charges against 150 suspects. Surrey council hopeful now in jail ‘Gill 22’ serving nine months for seriously injuring man while driving drunk by Kevin Diakiw A FORMER candidate for Surrey council is now

behind bars for hitting a pedestrian while driving drunk prior to last November’s election. Kuljinder Singh Gill, who ran for Surrey council under the name “Gill 22”, was sentenced in December to nine months in jail. Gill received 5,064 votes, even though The Leader reported prior to the election that he had previously been found guilty of uttering threats and mischief under $5,000 in July 2004. He was also charged with assault the same year, and was found guilty of breach of his probation order. Gill said the offences were part of his past and he had learned from them.

“In the past, I have had a negative side,” Gill said at the time. However, on July 17, 2011, Gill consumed a significant amount of alcohol – more than double the legal limit for driving – hopped into his Mustang convertible and sped down 84 Avenue. According to court documents, he turned the corner at 128 Street at 80 km/h and lost control of the vehicle, causing the Mustang to jump the curb and slam into a bench, where 29-year-old Pardeep Johal was sitting. Johal suffered a broken foot that required a steel plate to mend, a broken pubic bone, and needed 15 staples to close a head wound. In his victim impact statement, Johal said, “I do not hate Mr. Gill, but I want to ask him: Why?”

Surrey Provincial Court Judge Gurmail Gill said Kuljinder Singh Gill was “no stranger to drinking and driving,” noting he has a lengthy record of such offenses, particularly prior to 2006. “It appears that at least at the time he was getting these 24-hour prohibitions that drinking and driving was almost akin to a recreational activity for him,” Gill wrote in his finding. Gill was sentenced to nine months in jail, and an 18-month probation, where he agreed to abstain from drinking alcohol or other intoxicants. He was also given a two-year driving prohibition. As for his political career, it’s unlikely Gill will be able to file his financial disclosures by the March 19 deadline, precluding him from running municipally anywhere in the B.C. for the 2013 election.

Teen hit by SUV dies Struck in Cloverdale on Feb. 24 Black Press A 16-YEAR-OLD girl hit

by an SUV in Cloverdale last month has succumbed to her injuries. Krysten Doran died in hospital Friday. “Another angel gets her wings tonight,” said her father Paris Doran on Facebook. Krysten Doran was crossing Highway 10 near 180 Street Feb. 24 when she was struck by a westbound SUV. She suffered extensive head and body injuries. She was airlifted to hospital and underwent several surgeries. Doran was wearing dark clothing when she was crossing the highway and police say she was not in a marked crossing. Police also say it was dark out and the road conditions were wet. They do not believe speed or alcohol were factors. The driver was not injured, but was shaken up as a result of the collision. Charges are not anticipated. The incident is being investigated by Surrey RCMP Traffic Services. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. newsroom@surreyleader.com

Yasin: A Seaquam graduate From page 1 Yasin watched the short film from his home in North Delta. And he went to bed wondering what he, a 28-year-old artist trained in traditional oil painting, could do to further such a seemingly far-away cause. “I didn’t feel just donating money is really the best way. I’m always kind of wary of donating money when I don’t know exactly where it’s going,” said Yasin. “Donating my time is different.” So he sat down in front of his computer and did what he does best: paint. Using a digital tablet and his hand as a paintbrush, Yasin created a caricature of Kony’s face, posting a video of the sped up process – from simple sketch to finished colour portrait – to YouTube. After two days, nearly 6,500 people had viewed his video. “People remember images... a visual they can connect to the whole movement,” he reasons. The KONY 2012 movement and Invisible Children have since faced a barrage of criticism – some about

where donations to the organization actually go and others targeting the film’s oversimplification of the situation and omission of important information, such as the fact Kony moved out of Uganda several years ago. Invisible Children released a lengthy statement on Thursday responding to the criticism, including that it had oversimplified a complex issue. “In a 30-minute film…many nuances of the 26-year conflict are admittedly lost or overlooked,” the statement reads. “The film is a first entry point to this conflict for many, and the organization provides several ways for our supporters to go deeper in learning about the make-up of the LRA and the history of the conflict.” Yasin, a graduate of Seaquam Secondary and Vancouver Film School who teaches art on YouTube, is well aware of the controversy. “I’m not 100 per cent in favour of them (Invisible Children) specifically, but I really like this idea of people all over the world getting together against – or for – some-

thing,” he says. “I think that this can be used for other platforms.” He points to other examples of social media being used to enact change and prompt debate, such as the online backlash over SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) where thousands of websites coordinated a service blackout in January to protest the proposed U.S. law. “It’s something that’s very interesting. It brings about new possibilities where it’s not just the rich who get to dictate what policies go through,” Yasin says. And so, he’ll remain a supporter – albeit a reluctant one – of the KONY 2012 movement. “For me, I like to have a more hopeful view and I like action. Even if all it does it get people aware of the situation, I think it’s better than not being aware.” To view Yasin’s caricature drawing of Joseph Kony, go to http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=42vEdhZpUes. TEACHERS’ DISPUTE

RAESIDE

Sense and sensibility

I

n a labour dispute, reason and sensibility are often the first casualties. That’s certainly been the case with the teachers’ dispute. The two sides have been bargaining, perfunctorily, for close to a year. Far apart at the beginning, they have made little progress, partly because the B.C. Teachers’ Federation has never agreed that its members should be subject to the “net zero” mandate which the government has applied to other labour negotiations. This dispute shouldn’t be about wages. Teachers have some very strong arguments in their favour – including a B.C. Supreme Court ruling – that point to serious problems with class size and the number of special needs students in classrooms. Liberal government commercials heralding the establishment of new funds for such items seem to overlook the fact that it is money it previously took away. Both sides should be willing to give up something to improve class size and composition. It goes to the heart of whether students are actually progressing while in school. The BCTF went on a two-week illegal strike in 2005 over it, and enjoyed a fair amount of public support. This time around, support is more muted. Even though class size and composition remain as important issues, the demands for 15-per-cent wage increases and other additional benefits have turned off some members of the public. Without doubt, this strike is punishing students, many of whom have already faced challenges because of the lack of report cards and lack of consultation with parents. At the same time, teachers are punishing themselves. They will lose three days’ pay due to last week’s strike, which they are unlikely to make up. There is no need for a six-month cooling off period, as the government proposes. Both sides should be locked in a room and made to come up with a settlement – and soon. Unfortunately, the BCTF appears to love knockdown, drag-out fights. It’s happened so many times in the past that no other interpretation is possible. Governments, too, relish such fights. The Liberals are down in the polls and evidently hope to gain support by playing hardball. Meanwhile, one fact remains incontrovertible. Students and parents are caught in the middle, and B.C.’s once-vaunted reputation as a place of excellence in education is taking a beating. – Black Press

I can assure Kwan that these tragic realities are not confined to the hellish B.C. Liberal era of spending increases. AirCare another unwanted expense Change SURPRISE! SURPRISE! My car insurance is

up for renewal and my reminder from ICBC this morning urges me not to leave it to the last minute. I guess the war chest needs to be topped up, ready for the government to dip in their fingers. What shocked me was the “AirCare needed” message. I had thought that AirCare had died

a natural death. After all, the newer vehicles are so much more technically “clean” and my car is only seven years old and maintained to the hilt. I will drive less and avoid the tolled bridges but by golly, I still need a car and now it is seven years old it will cost me $45 this year and every two years to keep it under my roof.

On the other hand, with all of the new “fleece the public” ideas coming out of the TransLink board I suppose I should be thankful my wallet will only be $45 lighter this year – or at least, so far. Sheila Gair

Surrey needs pedestrian overpasses SURREY NEEDS to take a more serious look at the implementation of grade-separated pedestrian crosswalks on major roads like 88 and 104 Avenues and King George Boulevard for the purpose of reducing congestion and improving pedestrian and road safety. One of the problems with the designs of Surrey roads is the curb lane on a four-lane major corridor often acts as both a through lane and a right-turn lane; this is not a problem in some other municipalities such as Vancouver, where curb lanes are often reserved for parking or transit and not for general use, separating through and right-turn traffic. Crossing pedestrian traffic often backs up right turns and can cause congestion and safety issues (particularly at 104 Avenue and King George Boulevard – more than a few times I have seen trucks that must turn right take up both lanes to do so safely as there is no [badly needed] westbound to northbound right turn lane – significantly delaying traffic and transit). Pedestrian overpasses can allow for the reduction or restriction of atgrade crosswalk traffic that can block through traffic and cause congestion, and can improve the efficiency and safety for the vehicles on our roads. They also could address issues with pedestrian safety; such overpasses could be extremely useful where schools are near major roads. In a 2006 consultants’ meeting concerning property redevelopment northeast of 104 Avenue and 156

BOAZ JOSEPH / THE LEADER

A letter writer says that intersections such as 104 Avenue and King George Boulevard become dangerously congested when pedestrians and right-turning traffic mix. Street, one consultant made a suggestion for a pedestrian overpass to cross 104 Avenue near 157 Street to provide a safe crossing for students from a nearby school. Of all major corridors in Surrey, 104 Avenue has the fastest congestion growth rate, according to one-year traffic count observations

between 2010 and 2011 at that exact location. During school hours, school children often cross at nearby 156 Street, causing additional congestion problems and safety issues for vehicles, with heavy trucks often having to slam their brakes for a stopped car unable to turn right due to crossing pedestrians.

This needs to and can be addressed, and Surrey needs to seriously look at solutions. Citizens are contributing more and more money to transportation each year (taxes are rising). I want to see that money being used well. Daryl Dela Cruz, Surrey

In that time, I have run across several dog owners in the neighborhood, especially in the mornings, who apparently can’t read signs, or notice the memorial markers, or the veterans’ grove (cannon, flag and bench), or the flowers on the graves, and think it is okay to let their dogs use the graveyard as a toilet. These dog owners are purposely bringing their dogs to the cemetery and using it as a toilet/ dog park. They are beyond ignorant

and disrespectful. Several times I have questioned dog owners as to whether or not they know they are in a cemetery. Granted, I could probably have been more polite in my questioning but the responses from the dog owners have been downright

rude and irresponsible. Here is a sample of them: 1). “Are you from the city?” No I am not, does it matter? Your dog is peeing/pooping on someone’s grave. 2). “Well I have people here, too (in the cemetery)”. Really, I am

Slow down, live longer ARE YOU the driver who passed me the other day?

I was in a line of vehicles travelling slightly faster than the posted speed limit. You were in that bright shiny car, the one trying to exceed the speed of light. As far as I know, there is only one thing that can get us from one place to another faster than the speed of light: our imagination. Next time you are hurdling through space at breakneck speed, you should try using yours. Look into the future and see what will happen if you suddenly meet an immovable object. Have a long life and let the rest of us enjoy ours. Lloyd Atkins

sorry. Please then, let your dog defecate and urinate in the cemetery. It’s not disrespectful at all. 3). “The dog is on a leash.” Oh, I see. Sorry. It’s totally okay to use a cemetery as a toilet for your dog if it’s leashed. If you live in West Cloverdale/ Five Corners (the area around 60 Avenue and 168 Street) and you own a dog and let it do its business in the cemetery and/or take them (the dogs) there for “exercise,” then you are a complete imbecile with no moral compass. Residents of Cloverdale, have some respect. Do not use the Surrey Centre Cemetery as a dog park for your canine friends. Niamh Kavanagh, Cloverdale

electoral process

THERE ARE two events currently

happening which make for an interesting comparison. In the U.S., the Republican party is electing delegates who will nominate their candidate for the presidential election. Here in Canada, the federal NDP will meet this month to elect a leader to replace the late Jack Layton. The perceived front runner, Thomas Mulcair, has reportedly raised slightly more than $200,000. This amount may possibly be able to pay for a 30 -second spot commercial in the U.S. where candidates have raised and spent millions, possibly billions of dollars. It’s clear the last candidate standing will be the one with the fattest wallet. The closest we have to this in Canada is the recently concluded civic election which also has unlimited spending. The current provincial government had a task force which concluded that all was well and there was no reason to put in spending limits confirming the message that elected candidates would be those who spent the most. Perhaps this message is the reason for poor voter turnout and the general apathy of voters. We can only hope that the next provincial government will see fit to examine serious changes to local governance. Fred Girling, Surrey

Call about violators REGARDING THE letter printed on

Jan. 31 regarding someone who ignored the handicapped parking rules, there is always a number that people can call. It’s the number for the local police station. The Surrey RCMP’s nonemergency number is 604-599-0502. Given their caseload and the nature of the rule breaking, they might prefer that the parking enforcement people are called instead. Their general number is 604-591-4352. Both can be added to your cellphone to make calling them easy when it’s needed. Guy Roberts, Surrey

City has shut down 18 sites in 18 months by Kevin Diakiw SURREY HAS shut down 18 illegal massage parlours in

the last 18 months. Surrey’s crime reduction team has been working at putting the errant body rub parlours out of business over the past year-and-a-half, and has managed to close them at a rate of one per month. The city has been cancelling licences at the businesses that had been permitted under the category of estheticians, which includes stores such as nail studios. That makes body massage an illegal use under the city’s permit laws. “They were across the city,” said Coun. Barinder Rasode, chair of the city’s public safety and crime reduction committees. Surrey only grants permits for massage therapy clinics to professionals who are licensed through the Massage Therapists Association. Illegal body rub parlours had been operating in the city for some time, but Surrey only recently learned they weren’t properly permitted. “When we became aware of them, and when we became aware of a way we were able to shut them

Teen sentenced for attacking police Committed four criminal offences over six months in Surrey, Langley and White Rock

Coffee with Dave Got something on your mind?

by Dan Ferguson AN 18-YEAR-OLD has been sentenced on four unrelated criminal incidents that occurred over a six-month period in Surrey, Langley and White Rock, including an assault on two officers, obstructing police and a suspicious vehicle incident that ended with a police-dog pursuit. On Friday, March 2, Dallas Wayne Ball, of Langley, was sentenced by a Surrey Provincial Court judge to a combined term of more than two months in jail, plus 18 months of probation for all four offences. The judge also imposed a 10-year ban against owning firearms. Court records indicate Ball had already been held in custody for 31 days awaiting trial. Ball pleaded guilty Jan. 27 to one count of assaulting a police officer in connection with a Nov. 2 incident in the City

Both officers were treated at the scene by paramedics. Ball was arrested a short time later. Police said they were able to identify the second suspect in the pepper-spray incident, but no charges were laid. Ball also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges of with taking or occupying a “vehicle or vessel” without consent of the owner and possession of stolen property in connection with a July 15 incident in White Rock. Shortly after 1 a.m., White Rock RCMP were dispatched to the 15900block of Thrift Avenue for a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was located shortly after three blocks away on King George Boulevard in South Surrey, but failed to stop when an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over. The RCMP helicopter, Air 1 was called in to light up the scene.

FUNDING FOR STUDENTS, NOT FOR WAGE HIKES. The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases. It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.

BCTF CLAIMS AND DEMANDS

FACT

The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.

The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.

The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.

The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.

The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.

The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.

The union says that government refuses to negotiate.

There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.

The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.

Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.

The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.

2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.

It’s time to focus on what matters most in education – BC’s students. That’s why we are focused on per-student funding which is at an all time high, not on wage increases. We all want to do more to make BC’s education system even better. It’s the driving force behind BC’s Education Plan that teachers, parents and students are helping to shape. Teachers care about their students. Parents care about their children’s future.

3-1 series lead slip away, and have had their Pacific International Junior Hockey League season come to an end. The Devils fell 6-4 to the Delta Ice Hawks Friday night in the deciding game of their bestof-seven series at the Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver. The Hawks used three powerplay goals in the second period to turn a 1-0 deficit after the first period into a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes. Nicholas Lee had the Devils

in front after just four minutes of play, but penalties did North Delta in in the second frame. Spencer Traher on the powerplay tied the game for Delta just 21 seconds into the period, and Ryan Stewart put the Ice Hawks up six minutes later. Christian Rogriguez notched North Delta’s only powerplay goal of the game, with Lee earning an assist. But seven minutes later, Delta was up 4-2 with Mitchell Pacey and Cody Smith scoring while the Devils were shorthanded. Kolten Grieve made it 5-2 with nine minutes to play in the

game, then Smith scored into the empty net. With just 10 seconds remaining and the game decided, Julian Feljo tallied the final goal of the season for North Delta. The Ice Hawks had a 42-19 edge in shots on goal. Each team had six powerplay opportunities. â– North Delta netminder Harry Fredeman posted the best save percentage in the first round or the playoffs, stopping 280 of the 300 shots he faced in seven games for a .933 percentage. Eagles face a familiar foe in playoff series Junior A team finishes second in Coastal Conference by Nick Greenizan THE SURREY Eagles’

first-round playoff opponent is one they’ve become very familiar with lately. When the BC Hockey League post-season begins Friday, the Birds will square off with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, who finished just one point back of the Eagles for second place in the Coastal Conference. The conference-champion Powell River Kings will play the fourth-place Coquitlam Express in the Coastal’s other bestof-seven series. The Eagles and Capitals are no strangers to each other, having played three times in the last month, and five times since Christmas. And though the Eagles have sat in first place – and second in the entire BCHL – for much of the last two months of the season, the two clubs are extremely close in talent. Both teams finished with 36 wins on the season, but Surrey managed one more tie than their Vancouver Island rivals, thus securing home-ice advantage for the round. And once you break the matchup down even further, the gap between the two teams tightens even further. In the offensive department, the Caps scored just five goals more than the Eagles over the 60-game regular season, and defensively, Surrey allowed one goal fewer. Both teams had outstanding seasons on home ice – the Eagles lost just five of 30 games in regulation time, while Cowichan lost just seven – which may play into the hands of the

Surrey squad considering they have home-ice advantage. The Eagles are coming off a loss in their final regular-season contest, a 4-2 defeat to the visiting Westside Warriors Friday, but have the entire week to prepare for the Caps. Against Westside on Friday, Surrey defenceman Steve Koshey opened the scoring 16:46 into the first period, but the Warriors scored three – from David Pope, Marcus Basra and Max French – in the second frame to take the

lead. Alex Hagen replied for Surrey near the end of the period to bring the home team to within one, but it was as close as they’d get. French added an empty-net goal with 1:03 to seal the win for the Warriors, who finished out of the playoffs in the Interior Conference with just 53 points. Andrew Hunt took the loss for the home team, stopping 21 of 24 shots. Hunt has a chance to be a difference-maker for the Eagles in the playoffs, after a regular season that saw him play in 52

of 60 games, and finish among the league-leaders in most goaltending statistical categories. Cowichan, meanwhile, had more of an even split between its two 18-yearold goaltenders, as Surrey native Derek Dun saw action in 37 games, and Brady Rouleau, also 18, played 22. The best-of-seven first-round series begins at the South Surrey Arena with games Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The series shifts to Cowichan for games Monday and Tuesday night.
