Student, parent reaction mixed as educators begin walkout

Teachers hit the pavement as strike starts

ADDICTION

‘PANIC’

by Sheila Reynolds and Tracy Holmes IT WAS a chilly, wet beginning to their three-day strike, but Surrey and Delta teachers, some carrying plastic-covered signs to protect them from the freezing rain, took to the sidewalks outside their schools Monday morning regardless of the weather. For Dean Pacheco, a counsellor and Grade 12 teacher at Sullivan Heights Secondary in Surrey, it was important he be there to show his opposition to government legislation he said will not only be hurtful for teachers, but make things worse for students. For example, he said, the proposed law removes the current cap on the number of students with special learning needs that can be in one classroom. That alone, Pacheco said, will make it virtually impossible for those kids – as well as their classmates – to get the attention they need. “We all really care about the kids and we want them to do well,” said Paul Sharples, an LST (Learner Support Teacher) at Sullivan Heights. As of March 8, B.C.’s health ministry will no longer cover the painkiller OxyContin under PharmaCare and new prescriptions for its replacement – OxyNEO – will only be approved in exceptional cases.

access to oxycodone-based narcotic painkillers has prompted concern that desperate addicts may turn to other drugs or crime. OxyContin, dubbed “hillbilly heroin” on the street, is being phased out by its maker and replaced with OxyNEO, which contains the same active ingredient but comes in a different pill form that’s harder to crush and then snort or inject. B.C.’s health ministry said Wednesday it will no longer cover OxyContin through PharmaCare as of March 8 and new prescriptions for the replacement OxyNEO will be approved only in exceptional cases through a special authority program. Dr. Caroline Ferris, who works at the 30-bed Creekside

Withdrawal Management Centre in Surrey, said more than one-third of incoming detox patients are addicted to prescription drugs and many of them are on OxyContin. “It’s a big problem,” she said, predicting a rise in armed robberies and other crime as the last of the drug vanishes later this month and its street price skyrockets. “I think there will be a lot of panic,” Ferris said. “We’re probably going to see more break-ins to pharmacy warehouses and other places stockpiling the last of the OxyContins.” Most illicit users will simply switch to heroin, she predicted. Legitimate patients will still have access to either OxyNEO or other opioids, Ferris said, adding she supports the province’s decision to try to curb abuse of the prescription drug.

surveillance of a suspect in a sexual assault that occurred just over a month ago. On Friday Jan. 27 at approximately 5:30 p.m., a 42-year-old woman was leaving her place of work for the day at Central City Shopping Centre at 10153 King George Blvd., and walked to her parked vehicle in the upper parking lot at the south end of the mall. Once at her vehicle, she was approached from behind by an unknown male, who wrapped his arms around her upper body and covered her mouth with his hand. The male suspect pushed the victim down face first into her open vehicle and proceeded to try and remove the woman’s clothing and sexually assault her. The woman did not require medical attention. Anyone with further information about this incident who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Child Abuse and Sex Assault Unit at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS to remain anonymous.

to be a doctor. The Batalia family set up the bursary fund just before Christmas 2011 with a donation of $10,000 and a goal of reaching $50,000. “It has been amazing to watch the community work together to create this memorial in Maple’s honour,” says Joanne Curry, executive director of SFU’s Surrey campus. “Her family’s initiative and tireless efforts prompted numerous events, from bottle drives to a tribute at the Central City Model Search. And Surrey city councillor Barinder Rasode must have phoned everyone she knows to personally ask for donations from individuals and companies.” The largest gift of more than $13,000 to complete the fund came from a local busi-

ness, Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited. Bob Cheema, speaking on behalf of Gateway, says, “Supporting this fund is so important. By working together to do something positive, we are helping Maple’s family, her friends and our entire community move beyond this tragedy while helping students in the community who are in need.” The fund will be used to support SFU students in the faculty of health sciences, where Batalia was a student. It is the first bursary fund established at SFU to specifically support students in this new faculty. Police are still gathering evidence in regards to Maple Batalia’s murder. kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

“It’s just as well that this stuff comes off the market,” she said. OxyContin sells for $50 to $60 per 80-milligram tablet on the street, where it trades like currency. Ferris said part of the problem is that plenty of people obtain the drug by prescription who don’t actually use it themselves. Some who have good benefit plans get it for free and pass it on to friends or family who would have to pay more for it. Ferris said others on welfare may get OxyContin free through PharmaCare, sell the pills, and then use the money to buy alcohol, crack or heroin – all of which are much cheaper. She estimated 20

per cent of controlled prescription drugs like OxyContin end up in unauthorized hands. Ferris said a serious effort should be made to “weed out the diverters” – possibly by doctors conducting urine tests of patients to find those who don’t actually use the pills they’re prescribed. She also expects PharmaCare to carefully scrutinize all OxyContin patients who seek to switch to OxyNEO. Ann Livingstone, an advocate with VANDU (Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users), also expects reduced oxycodone access to trigger a switch to more potent narcotics such as morphine derivative Dilaudid or heroin. “There needs to be some outreach,” Living-

hat happens when there is an unwanted development in a neighbourhood, or when something is sorely needed – such as a recreation centre or pool? More often than not, a community association is born, and once the pressing issue is dealt with it remains – on guard for the neighbourhood and its residents and businesses. In fact, every town centre in Surrey has a community association. Except for one: Newton. Not for lack of effort. A decade ago, amid fierce opposition to the planned Hyland House shelter on King George Boulevard and 66 Avenue, a group of angry residents united against the project. But the shelter went ahead, and the group did not live on. Then the city made a push to clean up Whalley – Surrey’s new City Centre – and many of the forced-out drug addicts, dealers and prostitutes made their way down the King George to Newton. The Whalley Business Improvement Association, rebranded as the Downtown Surrey BIA, applauded as North Surrey streets became safer. But Newton continued to lack a strong collective voice to address the subsequent rise in crime, not to mention more pressure for development and rapidly increasing density. Had the criminal element moved east from Whalley, the Guildford or Fleetwood community associations would have stormed city hall. And the Bridgeview Community Association north of Whalley would have waged a mighty scrap to protect its turf. Enter Jude Hannah and her newly formed ReNewton group. Created to ensure the site of the former Surrey Public Market, at 64 Avenue and King George, is properly utilized, Hannah wants to see the area “carefully developed into a vibrant community hub – a place for everyone.” Surrey Coun. Barinder Rasode says Newton is long overdue for having strong, effective resident representation, noting community associations are crucial to fostering healthy neighbourhoods. Now it’s up to the folks of Newton to line up behind Hannah’s group and show some support. (Those interested can reach Hannah at 604-726-5203). Be prepared, Surrey planners. There’s a re-newed passion for Newton brewing.

erhaps the single most ridiculous stunt in the lead-up to this week’s teachers’ strike was pulled at an elementary school here in the capital. A teacher gave her Grade 1 class an assignment for anti-bullying day: take crayons in hand and write to Education Minister George Abbott, demanding he stop bullying their teacher and address class size and composition. This North Korea-style political indoctrination of six-year-olds was a mistake, according to the local teachers’ union boss, who vaguely indicated that the unnamed teacher would apologize to parents. Is this self-serving abuse of teacher authority an isolated incident? My experience as a parent and journalist suggests it is not, and recent events support that. By Friday, students across B.C. were skipping class in solidarity with their teachers, led by budding campus radicals suddenly conversant with B.C. Teachers’ Federation talking points about “Bill 22.” This left-wing groupthink pervades the education system from public schools through taxpayer-supported colleges and

In Vancouver, a protesting teacher got big media play, holding up a sign proclaiming that “it’s not about a wage increase, it’s about classroom conditions.” This too is a lie. The BCTF trotted out its standard “children first” rhetoric, then tabled its breathtakingly out-of-touch benefit demands. It doesn’t take a math teacher to see what its $2 billion wage and benefit fantasy would actually do to classroom conditions. For his part, Abbott started out pretty keen about students and parents heading down to occupy their local school and replace striking teachers with volunteers for a couple of days. But he changed his tune after the support staff union started grumbling about parents colouring too close to their craft lines. One fight at a time, I guess. The next one will be over teacher performance assessment and the choke-hold of union seniority on school jobs. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

A terrible Cigarettes in pharmacies a temptation intrusion of privacy THERE ARE close to 550,000 smokers

I AM writing to express consterna-

tion and opposition to my government’s attempt to introduce legislation to liberalize the access of the police to Internet communication under the guise that the “Internet predators” legislation is necessary to prosecute child pornography offenders. This is a terrible intrusion into the privacy of Canadian citizens and would not be necessary if the police and the court system were working properly. Furthermore, it was offensive to hear Public Safety Minister Vic Toews proclaim to another Member of Parliament that we “can either stand with us or with the child pornographers.” My uncle was killed in the First World War and my father served in the Second World War in an effort to prevent governments from snooping into people’s lives and engaging in oppression. I believe that Minister Toews should be fired or demoted for this offensive legislation and his conduct in the House of Commons.

in British Columbia, and 6,000 British Columbians die from smoking-related illnesses each year. For the past four months, the B.C. government has provided free access to smoking cessation therapies for British Columbians who want to quit. It is a valuable program that would be money well spent if not for the fact that many who are trying to quit must pass through drug stores where cigarettes and other tobacco products are sold to get to the dispensary at the back of the store to pick up their cessation medication.

Smoking is a strong addiction and the temptation of knowing that cigarettes are being sold in the store is often too strong to pass up. And the sale of tobacco in pharmacies is contrary to the health professional role pharmacists play in society. B.C. is in the small minority of only three provinces and territories (Manitoba and Yukon being the other two) that still allow cigarettes to be sold in pharmacies. Approximately half of the over 1,000 B.C. drug stores or other retail establishments that contain a pharmacy still sell cigarettes.

It’s time for the B.C. government to legislate the removal of cigarettes and other tobacco products from pharmacies and stores that contain a pharmacy.

Not enough ink to fight goofy ideas I WOULD like to prevail upon my Member of Parliament to ask her fellow members to not bring illthought-out bills forward in Parliament. Bill C-30 is one example where the minister says “you’re either with us or with child pornographers.” The pension bill is another, not to mention the robocalls as an example of the depths to which the party of John A. Macdonald, Robert Borden and John Diefenbaker has sunk. I think the final straw was my MP’s answer to my letter to her about the exporting of asbestos to Third World countries. She accused me of being a “colonist” as I shouldn’t tell India which products they should bring in. My defence is that India or whatever country should bring in whatever products they want but Canada shouldn’t be privy to exporting these goods. Please Ms. Nina Grewal, I can’t keep up my writing against all these goofy ideas unless you tell your colleagues to take a breather and stop and think first before they act. Fred Girling, Surrey

A letter writer believes Surrey is already well-served when it comes to live entertainment venues, and doesn’t need a performing arts centre in City Centre.

North Delta Leader on Feb. 2 about a proposed new performing arts centre. I totally agree with his comments. Enough is enough. I was involved with the fundraising committee for the Bell Centre at Sullivan Heights Secondary School, and thoroughly admired the Surrey school board for having the gumption to create this wonderful performing arts centre. It is well located and is easily accessible, with wonderful, free on-site parking. I would not like to see it suffer in bookings; the audiences there are growing, but need time to flourish. There are many other performing arts venues already in Surrey – the Pattison Auditorium (in the north, but with ample parking), the Surrey Arts Centre (centrally located with good parking), Peace Portal Alliance Church and other small theatres, and the Baptist Church in South Surrey on 140 Street, which seats 800 in the sold out White Rock Concert Series by subscription. Folks who attend these concerts would certainly not be making their way to Surrey Centre. I will look forward to hearing more about the proposed Surrey City Centre theatre. Why not in the SFU complex? What about the problems of transit and parking for those who would have to drive from everywhere else in Surrey? I thought Frank’s comments were bang on! Elaine Godwin, Surrey

I understand if the public feels that the zero mandate pay increase is warranted for public servants, although the lack of revenue might also be affected by the fact that the government has cut the corporate tax rate to 10 per cent. At this time, though, I would say that a pay increase has been supplanted by other concerns. I am angrier at the methods the government is employing and the areas that they have targeted. The government, definitely a party in these negotiations, has dictated what a mediator can and cannot address. Everything that is to be considered, such as seniority for hiring, professional development, and exceeding class size and composition, are issues that the government and

BCPSEA want to change. There is nothing from the teacher’s position. How can it be called mediation if only one side will be affected? I think this government may accomplish what it wants through this legislation, but they will have burned a bridge in doing so. In the future, if/when teachers withdraw from their voluntary service to the students and teach according to the contract, I’m sure there will be lots of accusations, such as teachers don’t really care about the kids, and they’re only in it for the benefits and the money. I can only hope that the public remembers what the catalyst was that caused this change in our public schools.

Dave Stevens Delta

I HAVE just heard the

news that the B.C. Teachers’ Federation will be going on strike. This is nerve-wracking for me. My academics are currently at risk and teachers are also putting the Grade 12 students at risk, because they are about to finish their last year and they need the grades to get into a good college or university. The strike is also putting my job at the school cafeteria at risk, which I get paid for. I don’t think it’s fair to the parents to allow their

kids to be out of school for three days. It is said that parents are the first educators in a child’s life, but teachers should be academic role models and good employees. The teachers are not even worried about their jobs. They are acting as if there is nothing to worry about. The teachers should learn to compromise with the government, because they are not always going to get their way. Gabriella Abrams Langley

Teachers: Out until Thursday From page 1

“If the things that allow us to do our job effectively keep being taken away, it makes it difficult. It’s demoralizing.” The B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) served strike notice Thursday morning after a provincewide vote in favour of escalating job action. The move came two days after the provincial government tabled legislation forcing teachers back to regular classroom duties. Since September, they have refused to meet with administrators or complete report cards and months of contract negotiations have been fruitless. Teachers were scheduled to strike Monday to Wednesday and return to classrooms Thursday. Paul Steer, president of the Delta Teachers’ Association, said teachers in that district were handing out leaflets outside schools with the aim of engaging parents and members of the community on what he called “vital” issues. “We’re hoping we can convince people to take an interest in public education. We realize people are terribly busy... but teachers can’t rebuild the education system alone,” Steer said. Students at local high schools walked out of class on Friday to demonstrate their support for teachers. Jen Bhindi, a Grade 9 student at

L.A. Matheson Secondary in Surrey and one of the organizers at her school, said she wanted to have her voice heard. “We are showing that we care because this is our education,” Bhindi said. “We do care about the class sizes because it’s not only difficult for teachers to teach, but it’s difficult for us to learn.” She said one of her teachers has a class with 17 students with special learning needs, making it nearly impossible for anyone to get the education they deserve. In Surrey, small groups of students with signs reading “Support My Teacher” and “Negotiate Don’t Legislate” were seen outside Johnston Heights, Frank Hurt and Sullivan Heights Friday afternoon. “They need more money,” Jackie Czarnecki, in Grade 12, said, noting teachers don’t get paid enough for the work they do. Meanwhile, parent reaction also appears split, with many taking their opinions to Facebook or other social media venues. Leo Wang said the strike shows “most of our teachers don’t care about our kids, don’t care about student (sic), just money for themselves.” Lacey Donaldson said the strike “sucks” but added “having a child myself with special needs and not getting the help he needs in school makes me understand their reasoning.”

While Education George Abbott said schools will be open during the strike (because other non-BCTF staff will be working) and it would be up to parents whether to send their kids, most school districts, including Surrey and Delta, strongly urged parents to find other child care alternatives. “It is not possible for school administrators (one to two per elementary, three to four per secondary) to provide appropriate supervision for more than 70,000 students in the Surrey School District,” said a notice to parents CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees), which represents some school support workers, issued a statement saying that while CUPE members who work in public schools were expected to show up to work, they “should not perform any student supervision which is teacher and administrator work.” The proposed provincial legislation extends the current teacher pay and benefits for another six months, while a mediator works with the BCTF and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association in an effort to find common ground on class sizes, special needs support and other issues. The mediator is restricted to work within the government’s “net zero” wage mandate. newsroom@surreyleader.com

Charges in latest Surrey murder

by Kevin Diakiw TWO MEN have been arrested and charged for the murder of a Surrey man a week ago. Surrey’s Russell Bidesi, 21, and New Westminster’s Joshua Martinez, 19, have been charged with second-degree murder, robbery, and possession of a prohibited firearm in the shooting of 31-year-old Kacey Rogers.

Bidesi and Martinez allegedly burst into Rogers’ 14000block Grosvener Road home on Sunday, Feb. 26, and Rogers was fatally shot. Rogers was not known to police, who believe he was the victim of a targeted attack. “This was a planned home invasion turned deadly, said Cpl. Adam MacIntosh of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). “We are

very pleased to be in a position to make this announcement only a few days after Rogers’ murder. Although charges have been laid, this investigation (is) in its early stages, will remain active and continue to progress. Investigators from IHIT, assisted by members from the Delta Police Department, the New Westminster Police Service and officers from several

other investigative and integrated units across the Lower Mainland, worked together on the investigation, which resulted in the arrests. Investigators continue to explore any possible gang association. If anyone has information regarding this homicide, they are asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551IHIT(4448).

by Tracy Holmes ONE YEAR to the day after a Highway 99 crash that killed a young Vancouver woman, police announced a charge against the owner of a second vehicle involved in the incident. “While the investigation into this incident by the RCMP’s Deas Island Traffic Services Unit confirmed the involvement of a second vehicle in the incident, police confirm that there is no evidence to suggest that a collision between the two vehicles took place,” Cpl. Aaron Sproule said in a news release last week. “A Motor Vehicle Act charge of ‘change lanes unsafely’ has been laid against the registered owner of a vehicle alleged to have contributed to the series of events leading up to the tragic death of a Vancouver woman one year ago today.” Police did not release the name of the person charged. According to an ICBC list of penalties, the charge comes with a $109 fine. The victim – whom police have never publicly identified, at her family’s request – died March 12, nearly two weeks after the Honda she was driving crashed through a railing of the Serpentine River Bridge and plunged into the river. The driver, a woman in her 20s, was submerged for 90 minutes. Resuscitated and airlifted to hospital, she succumbed 12 days later. Police announced later that month that charges had been recommended against a second driver. Speed, drugs and alcohol were ruled out as contributing factors early in the investigation. The crash prompted Ministry of Transportation engineers to review how the guard rail performed. Last week, staff released their report, advising that the 1961-era bridge will be reinforced with more concrete guard rails in place of the cast aluminum railings. As well, the ministry announced other older bridges with heavy traffic are being examined to see if their railings warrant upgrading. The transportation critic for the Green Party of B.C., Don Pitcairn,

said the engineering study proves the “brittle” aluminum guardrails on the bridge were to blame for the vehicle plunging into the river. In a release – headlined “Liberal’s failures lead to deadly guardrail failure” – Pitcairn said he uncovered signs of damage and neglect when he

inspected “a handful of aluminum guardrail bridges on Highway 17 in Delta and on Highway 99 in Surrey” recently. The South Surrey resident said “potentially deadly aluminum guardrails” should be replaced with concrete barriers immediately.

“As to how many more bridges across B.C. have these, when they will be replaced with modern concrete barriers and how much it will cost are questions that still need to be answered by Christy Clark’s Liberal party,” Pitcairn added. – with files from Dan Ferguson

WOMEN IN BUSINESS CELEBRATED Third annual Surrey Women In Business Awards promises to be biggest and best so far by KEVIN DIAKIW

It was three years ago when the Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) decided it was high time to celebrate outstanding women in the field of business. The SBOT’s education team was the first group to recognize there was a need for such acknowledgement, according to Brianne Colbert, event marketing coordinator for the SBOT. “They are responsible for the brainstorming behind this,” Colbert said. “They had just started talking about ways to recognize more women in our business community.” From there, the plan of a Women in Business Awards event was hatched. The inaugural year, there were 22 nominations for three categories. 100 people attended the event. The next year, the number of nominations

doubled to what is now five categories. Last year, 300 people attended the ceremonies. “The event has evolved, there are more nominations this year than any of the past two years,” Colbert said. “And our keynote speakers just keep getting better.” The SBOT hands out awards in five categories: professional, corporate, entrepreneur, leadership and not-for-profit. There will also be a Community Achievement Award. The event is Wednesday, March 7 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, 15269 104 Ave. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m., with the program taking place from 12-1:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $50 plus HST from the Surrey Board of Trade at 604-581-7130.

Devils are one win away Junior B hockey team has 3-1 series lead by Rick Kupchuk WORKING OVERTIME

has paid huge dividends for the North Delta Devils. A pair of extra time wins in less than 24 hours on home ice has the Pacific International Junior Hockey League team enjoying a 3-1 series lead in their best-of-seven quarterfinal series. North Delta upended the Delta Ice Hawks 2-1 Friday night at the Sungod Arena, then won again Saturday with a 5-4 victory. The third place team in the Tom Shaw Conference, the Devils can complete an upset of the second-place Ice Hawks by winning one of the next three games, the first of which is tonight (Tuesday) on the Ice Hawks’ home ice at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The two rivals have now played three consecutive overtime contests. Delta won the first, a 3-2 victory last Wednesday night in Ladner. Goalie Harry Fredeman almost stole a win for the Devils, facing an incredible 71 shots before the Ice Hawks eked out the win. The 20-year-old Fredeman, a Ladner resident, earned his second firststar honour in as many nights. Despite getting outshot 23-10 in the opening frame, the Devils led 1-0 on the goal from Adam Nishi. The Ice Hawks went up 2-1 after 40 minutes, with Anthony Brito and Ryan Cuthbert scoring. Delta continued to attack the North Delta net, and after 60 minutes, had outshot

their guests 63-27. But a 21-save performance by Fredeman in the third period, and a goal from Manuveer Mahil with 12 minutes to play, forced overtime. Alex Martin of the Ice Hawks notched the winner on a powerplay, six minutes into extra time. Fredeman was the second star in Friday’s win at Sungod, making 37 saves. North Delta outshot the Ice Hawks 20-7 in the first period, and led 1-0 on a goal from Nishi. But again the Ice Hawks took over the run of the play, but with a 28-10 shots on goal advantage, could only score once. Cody Fidget netted a powerplay goal midway through the second period. Darren Asuncion notched the winner

with an unassisted effort 10 minutes into extra time. Delta fired 47 shots at the Devils goal Saturday night, but again lost. After Asuncion staked the home side to a 1-0 lead after five minutes of play, the Ice Hawks surged in front 3-1 midway through the contest. Delta rallied, with Stefan Burzan scoring late in the second, then Jacob Wensley and Sam Vikich netting goals for a 4-3 lead with five minutes to play. Delta forced overtime with a powerplay goal, but lost when Colin Catchpole scored for the Devils five minutes into overtime. Should the Ice Hawks stave off elimination tonight, game six is set for tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at the Sungod Arena.

McCallum voted BC’s best SURREY NATIVE Paul

McCallum of the B.C. Lions has been named Sport BC’s Best of BC winner for 2011. McCallum, a 19-year veteran of the Canadian Football League, set CFL records for consecutive field goals with 30, and for field goal accuracy

(94.3 per cent). The oldest active player in the league, the 42-year-old kicker helped lead the B.C. Lions to a Grey Cup, the second of his career. This is the second year the public has determined the Best of BC award winner by an online vote. The Grey Cup’s Most Outstanding Canadian Andrew Harris (Nanaimo) of the B.C. Lions, reigning Canada Soccer Player of the Year Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, Pan American Games record holder Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops and Stanley Cup winner Mark Recchi (Kamloops) were also finalists for the award, which recognizes a professional or amateur athlete for outstanding athletic achievement.

Did you know... The phrase, “Drowning The Shamrock” is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year. On the average day, 5.5 million pints of Guinness are consumed around the world. That number more than doubles on St. Patrick’s Day, with more than 13 million pints going down the hatch. First brewed by Arthur Guinness in Dublin, Ireland, in 1759, Guinness, has become synonymous with Ireland and Irish bars. Bottoms up!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is the one day a year where everyone is a little bit Irish. It began as a celebration of Ireland’s Patron Saint who died on March 17th. Here are a few facts you may not have known. St. Patrick was not Irish! He was actually born in Britain, but exactly where is debatable. The color of St. Patrick wasn’t green but blue. Green, in Irish legends, was the favorite color of the Good People (the proper name for faeries) who were likely to steal people, especially children, who wore too much of the color. It was also believed to make you invisible to leprechauns, who would pinch anyone they could see. St. Patrick did not chase all the snakes out of Ireland. In fact there is no record of snakes of living anywhere near the Emerald Isle let alone on it. The snakes are just a representation of the pagans that he converted to Christianity. The shamrock was worn as a badge on the lapel, three is Ireland’s magic number and the three petals that make up the shamrock are supposed to bring good luck. St. Patrick’s used the shamrock as a symbol to explain the Trinity in Christian religion.
