Entertainment converging with fashion is nothing new but this is one of the most exciting tie-ups we have come across in decades. French fashion house Louis Vuitton has just named US rapper and producer Pharrell Williams as its new creative director for menswear.
The luxury brand announced on Instagram that it had hired Pharrell after the sudden death of its previous menswear designer, Virgil Abloh, in 2021. Other names floated as successors to Abloh included British designers Grace Wales Bonner and Martine Rose, as well as US designers Telfar Clemens and Colm Dillane (aka Kid Super) who was announced as Louis Vuitton’s first ever menswear guest designer last month. Not since Kanye West launching billion dollar brand, Yeezy, have we been this excited. Pharrell has worked for Chanel in the past and collaborated twice with Louis Vuitton, back in 2004 and 2008 for as an artistic director.
Pieto Beccari, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton said of Williams in a statement on Instagram. “His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton toward a new and very exciting chapter.”
