Polar bears are enormous creatures with a thick layer of blubber underneath their skin for insulation and buoyancy in water. Thick fur and blubber contribute to the polar bear’s 1500 pounds or more in body weight. Although we typically see images of polar bears on land, they are mainly marine animals and spend most of their time swimming the Arctic Ocean in search of their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice. Its long and narrow skull aids in streamlining through the water, making the polar bear an efficient swimmer in its natural habitat. Polar bears are facing greater challenges as a result of global warming.
