Retail: Colors + details to note for 2019/20 Beige/camel/browns – the shift from the grey scale to the browns continue, we like the warm tones inspired by the mountain camels in winter.
Tortoise shells, applied as trims and printed on all types of materials for gear and accessories.
The Icy Teal (greenish blue) found in glaciers … the lightest version is the new white and when saturated, it is the new pastel tone, that hits right in the middle of light blue and light green on the color scale.
Dark navy denim color is the new “black” getting cleaned up and elegant, midnight dark, subtle deviations, and perfect for the new tailored details. Also looks great in knits. Best with brass buttons and brass colored thread.
Plaids - vintage patterns mixed with vibrant pops of accent colors. Geometric patterns in general continues to be strong. This is the sign that the market is getting tired of conversational and novelty prints, and textures and solid colors become more important going forward.
Retail: Colors + details to note for 2019/20 buys
Shine - sequence, holographic, reversible, or reflective it is here to stay for a while. This is a slow moving trend that will require some time to exit.
Engineered “tie-dye� - the extremes work best. Understated neutral colors or energized in saturated brights. Saturated bright/neons - Green/lime leads the pack, for now, but it will be followed by the virtual yellow by the end of 2020. There is a shift in the way we see primary colors, the reds are brighter and the blues are influenced by purple, it is a reflection of the modern lifestyle where we spend a lot of time in front of backlit screens.
Less about furry textures and more of prints of insects and embossing of exotic reptilic leathers. Vegan leathers, of course!

IN/OUT list 2019 As each year closes FFT reviews and publishes a list of what is “IN” and what is “OUT” for the coming year. As was in the recent past, there is a crowded list of items in “LIMBO” because trends are moving slower in Sports products as well as Snow and Outdoor lifestyle products. The “LIMBO” list, which means that the item is not “IN” or “OUT”, is not included here. It contains items like the “puffer jackets”, “oversized sneakers/athletic footwear”, “body bag/fanny pack”, sweatshirts and hoodies. All legitimate, but dwells in the “luke warm zone” because these products often transition through the “basics” category.
IN * Matching/ensemble dressing, as in sweat suits/pajamas * Sustainability anything (worthy messaging, considered as a good value) * Workwear (functional details, time tested shapes) * Bicycle shorts (theeey’re back!) * Clogs/mules (continuation of slip on/off footwear) * Smaller sunglasses * Handcrafted/vintage accessories and details * Black and white for color and optic print
OUT * Layering many pieces on the body (Jacket over the Hoodie over the T-shirt over the undershirt with large blanket scarves on your neck) * Transparent plastic stuff (jackets, bags, and footwear) * Military (including camo) * Thigh high boots, novelty stocking boots, all boot heights except the ankle boots. * High waisted jeans, especially embroidered and bedazzled ones, if ripped, absolutely out! * Statement sneakers/trainers (with exaggerated details, designer logos or other identifiers, even if it is personal) * Cowboy everything (the fringe and the hats shifted to the retro vibe, not the “western” gear vibe. * Tops with exaggerated large sleeves like ruffles, huge cuffs, costume pleating and elongated sleeves. According to Haysun Hahn, FFT founder “The future is all about the search for the elegance in individualism, not minimalism, a “neo-functionalism” in consumer products. It is a style that is respectful of practical needs to accommodate “independent” lifestyles. Reality is the source of inspiration, and that means we will be examining style from a subjective, customized, curated, agenda. It’s exciting to see how we will accommodate consumers who have different ideas of what constitutes a “value” proposition. This will change the way we “service” consumers!”.
