THE BREAK -GOVERNMENT OFFICE BUILDING CHANAKYAPURI | NEW DELHI The concept of the building rises from an attempt to design an office building that breaks away from the typical and predominant ‘box’. This particular thought has ben physically reflected in the form creating a double heighted break in the form meant as a open, break-away space used by office employees. The auditoriumm is inspired by the historical Chankaya Cinema that existed earlier on the sire with its cantilevered seating

The site, located in Chanakyapuri in Delhi is a predominantly low density area with many government office complexes nearby. Yashwant Place - a extremely popular market place of Delhi is located adjacent to the site.

TYPICAL OFFICE BUILDING DESIGN IN THE REGION

The main challenges hence were to try and integrate the public zones inside the building to the market place while still maintaining the security of the office

The office building was so designed to function as a more public friendly building rather than casting them away. The public is given a opportunity to flow through the office into the yashwant place The ground floor breaks away from the strict access regulations and a diagonal connected between the road and the Yashwant place has been created linking the two isloated spaces together.

GROUND FLOOR INTEGRATION WITH CONTEXT

CREATING A LITERAL BREAK FROM THE NORM IN THE FORM

The Yashwant Place market has been integrated at the ground floor by creating a clear connection between the entrance plaza both visually and physically

WOMEN’S CO-OPERATIVE DESIGN KHIRKI VILLAGE | NEW DELHI

The Context

The design of this Co-operative was women oriented as they would be the ones managin it. the aim here was to improve the social and economic situation of the community of Khirki Village by empowering t h e m . The program was hence designed to cater majorly to the women.

Khirki Village along with Satpula - a historical Landmark on its South SIMPLE CUBOIDAL FORM SIMILAR TO CONTEXT

PREDOMINANTLY LONG GREEN BELT

COURTYARD INTRODUCED

Form Development

Form wise the main objective was to restrict the structure to two floors maintaining the existing skyline and not causing problems to the nearby homes. BREAKS CREATED IN FORM TO PROVIDE FOR MOVEMENT PATHS

The Water Front

Attempt has also been made to try and develop the water front by creating a spillout for the Haat Bazaar that would house food stalls and chat vendors in the evening giving meaning to the space

FORM STEPPED TOWARDS SOUTH TO FOLLOW CONTOURS AND OPTIMIZE DAYLIGHT

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

The design of the building incorporated all the necessary functions required by the community and zoned it based on consideration of various factors including proximity, climatic, view and experience of space

FACADE AND LOBBY DESIGN JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN | GROUPWORK The main design motive was to create a continuously changing and morphing facade that adapted to the climatic requirements of the region providing a comfortable environment in the interriors without changing much of the existing structure. Being a part of an existing auditorium, the

The design objective was to redesign the entrance lobby and facade of the Ravindra Manch (a performance theater) in Jaipur to give new life to it. The main focus of the studio was to learn about passive design strategies

The ground floor plan of the complex has been modified to create two internal courtyards at the two edges of the L-shaped Entrance lobby setting up a internal movement of cool air in both the wings from the courtyards to the solar chimneys in the double heighted atrium at the intersection. For further protection against hear, a secondary wall is provided around the ramp facing west with splayed openings and jaalis that also acts as an extension of the exhibition space on Level 2 of the design.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

FIRST FLOOR PLAN

Two internal courtyards on the ends of the lobby act as cool zones in the building that helps creating air currents Main facade composed of vertical louvres angled to maximise northern light and minimise solar heat gain from west sun The central atrium was roofed with solar chimneys that acted as outlets for the air fromt the coutrtyards creating the air flow

The morphing louvre system on the facade allowing the lobby to be naturally lit during the day and reducing heat gain at the same time

AIR MOVEMENT INSIDE LOBBY

AIR MOVEMENT OUTSIDE LOBBY

The performance theatrer created in the atrium at the intersection of the two wings of the lobby The ramp to Level 2 with the Exhibition area. It could serve as an extension of the exhibition as well creating a walk-through gallery

COMMUNITY CENTRE BARLOWGANJ | UTTARAKHAND The idea here was to create a space that could promote the nearby primary school and hence incorporates a play area inside the site adjacent to the school that could be used commonly by both the school and the creche. The focus of the design was also to study climate oriented responses in a predominantly cold climate type and utilising the south sun to provide natural heating.

HOTEL

HOSPITAL RESIDENCE

The site given for the design problem was in Barlowganj, a settlement next to the town of Dehradun. A school, a residence, a hotel and a hospital are located adjacent to it and falls at the intersection of three very busy motorable roads. The program included creating a creche, a childrens library, a multipurpose hall and a cafeteria

SCHOOL

SITE

The design objective included creating a pedestrian path connecting the school and the road behind it. Climatic factors played a role in designing as the studio objective was passive building design. Each function is designed to maximise the south sunlight entering it and an attempt has been made to make use of the contours by creating internal levels

Pillouts for the Multi-purpose hall and the creche have been created in front to serve as a south-facing open area that could be used even in the winters The path connects the playground and the main road visually and provides for a better connectivity for the school

LEVEL 1

The Ground floor of the design incorporates the Multi-purpose Hall and the Creche. Levels are created inside the Hall using the natural topography . The Creche has been so placed to create a play area in front of it. Keeping the orientation in mind, windows facing south have been maximised to promote heat gain during the winters

The first floor houses the Children’s library and the cafeteria. The cafeteria is complete with its own outdoor seating facing south overloking the play area The library sits above the creche and is set back to ensure light and heat entering the creche below

MIGRATION MUSEUM NEW DELHI

The theme given in the studio for the museum design was ‘migration’. With the site located in Old Delhi,

The form of the museum hence was derived from the idea that people experience a sudden change in their lives due to migration, whether by choice or force. This sudden change has ben reflected in the form by shifting the second gallery of the museum abrybtly from its original axis. This break is now accentuated by pushing the intial form upwards that breaks and reaches the ground again, only to move up in life again

The final form of the museum creates two types of galleries complementing their exterior form each reflecting the nature of emotions that represent the form as well

WEAVERS CENTER KANADUKATHAN | TAMILNADU The form for this particular project was derived from a combination of the traditional building form present in the location along withmore contemporary form types that were emerging. The form resulting is hence a clear amalgamation of the two geometries creating a co-operative that is both traditionally rooted to the ground as well as reaching towards the future.

SITE

FLO OR PL AN GR OU ND

The ground floor is designed algned to the North-South axis as the traditonal houses complete with a central courtyard and roofing techniques. It houses the Multi-purpose hall for the community and a weaving centre for silk and baskets with it their individual spillouts. It also has a small performance area with the lake behind it.

PL AN

The first floor of the complex houses the guest houses complete with attached washrooms and balconies. A cafeteria is provided on the North-east side of the floor that directly overlooks the lake and the palace and connected to the bazaar on the ground floor of the complex.

FIR ST FLO OR

The intention was to provide a place that can serve as a platform for the silk and basket weaving societies within the community, giving them a place to practice their otherwise dying art..

WORKSHOP AT FACHOCHSCHULE ERFURT | GERMANY The workshop took place in the city of Erfurt as a joint venture between School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and Fachochschule Erfurt, Germany. The workshop involved designing and making a installation in a public area of the city of Erfurt that would act as small interventions in the space. The nature of the installation could be anything depending on the choice of the designer.

Katholisches Pfarramt St. Severi

THE SITE

The site chosen for the project was a area called Domplatz located at the heart of the city that housed major landmarks.

Zitadelle Peterburg

Erfurt Cathedral

Being a very important tourist destination of the city, there seemed to be a lack of knowledge about these monuments.

THE CONCEPT

Hence the concept was to create a interactive information frame that could be used by tourists and locals alike to know about these landmarks.

Landesgericht (Court)

Obelisk DOMPLATZ

This concept could then be extended to other parts of the city tailor made for each of these sites to cater to the monuments location with respect to that site A ‘FRAME TRAIL’ could be then be created for tourists to follow to know more about the city

THE DESIGN

Each panel is specifically deisgned at an angle from a central point through which only one landmark gets ‘FRAMED’ A viewer can know the history of any place by just lifting the panel directed at it and looking through the frame
