SAIL ORANGE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

SAILING TEAM

WHO WE ARE

The Syracuse University Sailing Team is a club sport of Syracuse University. We are a full member of the MidAtlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA). We compete in regattas everywhere from Canada to Virginia. The team was founded in 1937 but has since been on-and-off until fall 2010 when the club was re-started. We strive to offer students the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college sailing, to continually become a better team, and to give back to the university and sport of sailing. Our club focuses on competitive sailing, but welcomes students of all different levels of sailing experience. The team is made up of 35 undergraduate students. It is lead by a group of five students who collaboratively manage the team, each specializing in particular aspects of the team. Practice is held on weekends and select days during the week in the fall. During the spring, practice depends on how fast Cazenovia Lake un-freezes. Throughout the fall, spring and winter, the team runs athletic training sessions and chalk talks focusing on racing rules & strategy.

FLEET & FACILITIES The team practices at Willow Bank Yacht Club on Cazenovia Lake in Cazenovia, N.Y., a 30 minute drive from campus. We own a fleet of 8 FJs and 4 Club 420s. The lake is the “unoffical thumb” of the Finger Lakes region of Central New York. It shares some of the same geographical features of these glacial lakes. It is 4 miles long, .5 miles wide with a hilly western shore. Wind is generally mild throughout the spring and fall. Willow Bank Yacht Club is the same location Hamilton University and Colgate University’s sailing teams use to practice, making it an ideal location to compete against other schools in the area.

REGATTAS

We sail in regattas throughout MAISA, traveling to 8-10 events in the fall and 6-8 events in the spring. Most of our racing is focused on fleet racing. As we expand our schedule year-by-year, we are adding women’s racing, match racing, team racing and keelboat events. We typically travel to other schools throughout the northern portion of the region during early fall. On the first weekend of October, we host the Cazenovia Fall Open, an event hosted together with Colgate using our fleet of FJs and Colgate’s Club 420s. During the spring, most of our early events take place in Maryland and Virginia, with events later in the spring further north. The team organizes a spring training practice trip during spring break in March.

BEING ON THE TEAM

Time commitment to the team is flexible. Sailors who are experienced, regularly attend practice and team meetings are given preference when going to regattas. Team members have the opportunity to compete nearly every weekend throughout the fall and spring. As a team, we share a common spirit of constant improvement. Because the team is student run, there is opportunity for members to contribute, lead and shape the team. Leadership roles range from communications to university relations and equipment management. This not only helps elevate the team, but also develops valuable skills.
