BEREA COLLEGE BROOMCRAFT
C E L E B R AT I N G A CENTURY Celebrate with us as we honor the past 100 years and look forward to the next 100 years. What started as a way for the students on the Berea College Farm to stay busy in the winter months has turned into a long tradition of quality broommaking. Today, we are one of the few broom-makers left in the country. The crafting of brooms is just one of the ways we honor the dignity and utility of all work. The 100th Anniversary Broom Limited Edition of 100 brooms $100.00

COVID-19 On March 13, 2020, Berea College made the decision to cease inperson instructional activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. About 150 students remained on campus, leaving it void of the normal hustle and bustle of classes and work. For Student Craft, this meant the responsibility of making inventory for this year’s catalog fell to the heads of each production area, along with just two students, who worked tirelessly all summer. Additionally, the Craft department stepped up to assist the College in filling its personal protective equipment needs. Woodcraft made almost 500 plexiglass sneezeguards to be used around campus, and Weaving supplied the campus and community with more than 1,500 face masks. As a result, our inventory is down from previous years when there were 100 students working in the Craft areas. Temporary product shortages could occur. We will be working hard to ensure we fulfill orders in time for the holidays. If you see an out-of-stock message on our e-commerce site, please call us so that we can place you on our backorder list.

THE 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY BROOM
1 0 0 -Y E A R ANNIVERSARY BROOM
Limited Edition of 100 brooms $100.00
A fantail broom that honors our 100 years of broommaking. The foundation of the broom is the fantail form, which was used to make brushes in the Appalachian region prior to the arrival of European settlers. We then use stalks and broomcorn dyed with walnuts and osage orange heartwood that is harvested from the Berea College Forest. This limited-edition run of 100 brooms celebrates the best of craft and the many contributors to the rich traditions that inspire us every day.

FOREST STOOL Promoting our commitment to sustainability, the Appalachian region, and the dignity of all labor, this ash stool starts with timber harvested by our College Foresters. The use of traditional horse logging protects the earth and soil in our 9,000-acre forest. Using handsplit parts, shaped on the shaving horse, we construct the stool using greenwood joinery techniques. Inspired by the work of Chester Cornett, the Forest Stool champions generations of Appalachian chairmakers.

THE PEOPLE COLLECTION The People Collection was designed by students Zoe Cowley and Rachael Bates with bright vibrant colors, global forms, and a surprising depth of texture. Each individual piece displays a range of colors. The collection drew inspiration from the College’s 5th Great Commitment celebrating the beauty of difference and the importance of recognizing the kinship of all people. The collection features mugs, bowls, batter bowls, berry bowls, and pitchers with purple, green, blue, and yellow accents.
THE PLACE COLLECTION Our newest collection from Student Craft is based on iconic tinware forms that student designer Phillip Anderson described as “something you would find in your grandfather’s garage.” Each item is glazed with a surprising combination of colors. This collection is a reflection of the depth, richness, and complexity found when examining and challenging the stereotypes of the Appalachian region. This offering features mugs, bowls, berry bowls, and pitchers in a rich iron red and glowing copper green. bcshoppe.com / 800-347-3892

RISE Every morning we rise to make this new day better than the last, honoring our past not just as a foundation for our future, but as a guide to how we may do better for the earth and its people. Inspired by blankets found in Berea’s Loyal Jones Appalachian Center Artifact Collection, these hemp and wool throws will last for generations and only grow softer with age. Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibers available and adds strength and durability to this beautiful throw. The wool we use is raised and processed in the United States and provides a cozy layer of warmth. The unique arrangement of each design allows students to make decisions on the color and placement of stripes, meaning each throw is one of a kind. Creativity and critical thinking are crucial skills to develop as a maker, and these blankets encourage our students to hone those skills while honoring the material.

CRAFTING DIVERSITY
I
n the spring of 2018, Berea College Student Craft began searching for a design partner to help our staff and students bring Berea’s historic work in diversity, equity, and inclusion to life through the objects our
students create. In January 2019, internationally acclaimed designer Stephen Burks was identified as that partner, and our Crafting Diversity collection was born. Stephen built his career on a pluralistic vision of design inclusive of all cultural perspectives. His hands-on experience with artisans all over the world and his strategy for collaborating directly with our students made him the perfect partner. This is a journey of design and production that culminates in a series of new products that are representative of our diverse student body. STEPHEN BURKS: Principal of Stephen Burks Man Made and recipient of the Illinois Institute of Technology Alumni Professional Achievement Award, the Brooklyn Museum Modernism Young Designer Award, the A&W, Architektur & Wohnen Audi Mentor Prize, and the United States Artists Architecture & Design Target Fellowship Grant, as well as being the first African American to win the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Product Design. In 2019, Stephen became the first Harvard Loeb Fellow from the discipline of product design. He is currently a Design Critic in the Masters in Design Engineering program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design as well as an Expert-In-Residence at the Harvard Innovation Lab.

THE S T. J O H N ’ S BIBLE
T
he St. John’s Bible is a remarkable expression of faith through art and calligraphy, uniting religion and education,
art and technology, and the traditional with the modern. The result is an ecumenical Christian translation of the Bible. In relation to the mission of Berea College, our Great Commitments, and our motto that “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” it is fitting that Berea College has the honor of being the permanent home to one of the 299 Heritage Editions of the St. John’s Bible. Next year, we plan to offer special, private viewings of the St. John’s Bible. It is truly an inspiration to experience. Learn more at www.bctrace.com.

Here, you will find peace and tranquility nestled in the woods or adventure on one the many hiking trails right outside your back door. The Cottage has a long history with Berea College. It was the original log home built in 1919 by Anna Ernberg, our first Director of Weaving. Anna moved to Berea from Sweden to start the weaving program that would eventually evolve into the Fireside Industries. If you would like to inquire about staying at the Cottage, contact Boone Tavern at (800) 366-9358.

REFLECTIONS This beautiful photo of Zoe in Ceramics reminds us to reflect on this past year. So much has changed since the beginning of 2020. Communities around the world are struggling with the effects of COVID-19: the loss of loved ones, unemployment, loss of social contact, and the loss of normalcy. Education has been affected in many ways and for many people. For us, the end of on-campus instruction in March reverberated throughout our entire campus. Students finished their spring semester remotely. Our May graduation ceremony was postponed. And for a college that relies on its 1,600 students to help run all campus operations, work greatly slowed over the spring and summer. This fall, approximately 850 students chose to return to in-person learning, while 700 students chose to continue their studies remotely. So, there is life on campus again, but it is different. While this past year has brought many struggles, Berea College is no stranger to challenges. We fought the injustices of slavery. We fought the Day Law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. We survived disease, multiple wars, and financial catastrophes. Through it all, we persevered because people like you continued to believe in our mission. Your support today enables us to continue our mission of providing a high-quality liberal arts education to a richly diverse group of students who have great academic promise but limited economic resources. No student admitted to Berea ever pays tuition.
