PRACTICAL RECOGNITION OF MORTARS FOR ADOBE BUILDINGS IN AVEIRO

’Traditional Mortars’ Materials and Techniques’ course (CEAPA) taught by Clara Vale, FAUP 2022

The students were requested to develop a scientific article on a free topic related to the course.

This scientific article aims to address practices for the identification of the composition of mortars from adobe buildings due to the common impossibility to rely on laboratory tests for the conception of lacuna mortars or replacement mortars compatible with the original mortars and respective adobe masonry, particularly at interventions on general residencial buildings. Focusing on traditional mortars from adobe buildings in Aveiro, we propose as a case study the fa cades of the house nº 2 in Beco do Galinheiro, due to its considerable variety of mortar anomalies characteristic of this construction method. Firstly, the mortar anomalies of this facades are identified, alongside the interpretation of its causes. Then, the sample tests and the interpretation of the obtained results are described. Lastly, based on the two previous chapters and on specialized bibliography – namely the results of tests carried out at the University of Aveiro – we present intervention hypotheses for each identified anomaly.

CURATIVE INTERVENTION OF EXTERIOR WALL PAINTING

coordinated by conservator-restorer Cátia Ferreira Linkedin: https://pt.linkedin.com/in/c%C3%A1tia-ferreira-984886173

The author of the painting (2009) is Fernando Ribeiro (1931-2022) from Póvoa de Varzim. The wall painting is composed of acrylic paint on stone and brick wall.

In 2020 emerged the urge to undertake the conservation and restoration works. It was carried out a research and compilation of chronological photographic testimonies of the mural, in order to study its degradation process overtime.

At the beginning of the intervention, the pathologies found were such as the large scale peel of the background paint, wall cracks, biological colonization, rusting and color fading (red and blue).

INTERSHIP AT ESTUDIO CURTIDORES, SEVILLE

April 2018 - June 2018

As an intern, my collaboration was mainly focused on an interior refurbishment project for the child and teenagers oncology department of the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío, Seville. The chosen theme for the project was the first circumnav igation by Fernão Magalhães, of which I was in charge of all the illustration work (with no previous experience), depicting a local animal from each stop of the route to ad dress to each room of the oncology department.

I also had the opportunity to follow up refurbishment projects in different stages of development, preparing presentations to discuss with clients, organising materi al for the studio’s new website, visiting projects under construction with infrastructure technicians, and a mem orable studio trip to Gordillos Cal de Morón.

‘REABILITAÇÃO, REINTERPRETAÇÃO E(M) EVOLUÇÃO:

uma prospecção projectual sobre o Lugar da Arrábida’

Master Thesis guided by prof. Manuel Mendes, FAUP 2016/2018

The study topic arose from the discovery of the ‘ ilha ’ at Rua da Arrábida 69, whose urban and landscape relationship made me see how this typology can create cosy and inviting spaces - as hospitality in adversity - despite its controversial origins, history and stigma . Such initial curiosity expanded, leading to the interest in the very circumstance of the Lugar da Arrábida , which for various reasons proved itself passive to its urban densification . Currently, despite the isolation of this place , its views on the Douro River and the various opportunities of occupation and construction have been attracting tourism and strongly speculative real estate interest .

In a context where different realities intertwine - some self-evident, others more discreet - architecture and urban planning were explored as a strategy of homeopathic and holistic processes , to the detriment of speculative and autho ritarian intervention .

Faced with the challenge of how to respond to the discontinuity of uses and meanings accumulated during the slow development of the Lugar da Arrábida , one can see in the exploration of the limits and overlaps between rehabilitation, reinterpreta tion and (/in) evolution , a challenging and transversal exer cise at various scales and fields - from theory to construction, from politics to poetics, from urbanism to domesticity, from sociology to psychoanalysis, from common sense to good sense - in the construction of a theoretical body as the substance of a strategy of intervention.

Thus this thesis emancipates both city and dwelling as inherent in a transmissible evolutionary process - malleable by those who inhabit it - where flexibility , affinity , metamorpho sis and prospection come together as the base elements of this collective and individual construction. As a means of confron tation between theory and practice, experimental projects were developed at different scales, complexity and detail as autono mous interventions of a joint process.

PROJECÇÕES

Unlike Porto, Gaia doesn’t have a well-defined city centre and neither a clear identity besides the touristic and confined Porto Wine Cellars. While both cities could share the river as a hinge , Gaia seems to take it as a barrier, barely providing access to it, besides its geographical potential. Assuming itself as the outskirts of Porto. By analysing as much information availa ble, the evolution of this territory and through observation in loco it turned out clear the main problem of Gaia was its chaotic development, both in height and mobility . It is very hard to get anywhere from anywhere. Thus it became one of the main goals to entangle the existing structure enhancing its hidden potentials, making it more flexible, diversifying both connection routes and public transportation towards schools , hospitals , public parks and such, articulating the city not only within but also outwards expanding this mobility strategy southwards and also to Porto .

In a later stage, the teamwork was detailed in different inter vention areas: the railway park besides General Torres Train Station, its connection with the Castle, the Castle’s connection with the Cristal Palace (Porto) and the Wine Cellars by cable car , the deactivated quarry and the rural Eastern area of Que brantões . Each one developed individually by a group member, but always following the same mainstream strategy and dis cussing ideas and designs.

‘A HOUSE AS A SITE’, PORTO

Graça Correia, FAUP July 2016

“Graça Correia challenged the students to design a house at a site close to the Faculty of Architecture. The goal was for the students to explore their relationship with the site , which has a unique topography and dramatic view, characteristic of Porto. The development of the project requires a study of how form relates to the city - and, specifically for Porto, how the “house” relates to the hill. The house wants to see (or not see) the territory it is given. The section is essential to understanding this relationship, and the aim is for the section to be a final drawing representative of the core idea ” behind the design. For architects, a house is a laboratory where one can study solutions that can later be ap plied in larger projects. It is a way to develop specific solutions that can become answers to the universal problems that emerge in any work. A house represents a kind of attachment to a place - it’s built on a site and will become a site itself. “The idea is at the site, even more than in the mind” (A. SIZA) is a central concept at FAUP since many years back - “for those who know how to look” - some add. And in fact, transforming an idea - an attitude towards a site - into a built work, is what architecture is about, whatever the scale. Therefore, to build a house is an adventure that requires patience, guts and enthusiasm. Writing about houses, Gonçalo M. Tavares offers two stories - “Window”, in O senhor Calvino and “Spoon” by Samuel Beckett - that tell us how architecture can influence our perception of the world. Our chal lenge is to use thoughts when designing a House as a Site, from a Site as a House .”

ROWING CENTER, FREIXO, PORTO

Master project (as external student*) taught by prof. Carlos Prata, FAUP 2015/16

The site itself was one of the greatest challenges in this project, not only for its oversize towards the requested program but also for its division by the Paiva Couceiro Avenue in two different plots. It has also the particularity of facing the national road N108 which, besides its medium high traffic, connects Porto with the East neighbouring district and has also a close relation with Freixo Bridge traffic, connecting with Vila Nova de Gaia and all cities towards the South. Concerning the pre-existent warehouses, its demolition was proposed due to their lack of contextualisation towards the sur rounding area and the Rowing Center activities to be proposed. In replacement, there was planned a long garden connecting the Freixo Palace and the Press Museum towards Campanhã Train Station . Regarding the Rowing Center, it was proposed the design of a vertical volume to enhance the entrance . By entering a 30 meter high ceiling entrance hall, one could spread either to the Cultural Program in the northwest vol ume - auditorium, two classrooms, a showroom for rowing history exhibition and multipurpose lounge - or to the Rowing Program : in the southeast volume and underground - rowing warehouse, gym, training tanks and changing rooms - or up the vertical volume - common living room, dining hall, an administrative offices floor and housing for intern athletes. In short on what concerns materiality, concrete containing walls and metal structure work together, all interior coatings are on white painted wood - except for the polished concrete floors at the rowing program - all exterior surfaces are zinc coated, including shadings of perforated zinc plates.

*not feeling fulfilled with my education regarding construction and technical issues so far I proposed myself as an external student (with no credits recognition) at Project IV, Construction III and Structural Systems courses.

‘ENGLAST - Tenk deg et grønt Filipstad’, OSLO

teamwork project at Fjord og Byen landscape architecture studio taught by prof. Jeppe Aagaard Andersen and prof. Elisabeth Ulrika Sjödahl, AHO spring 2015

By the opportunity provided by the Oslo Municipality, the Fjord og Byen studio course worked together as a team towards the conception of an installation for Filipstad harbour.

Around the year of 1650, Filipstad was known as the property of the pharmacist Philip Moth, and by then it was far from looking like the large scale harbour it is today.

By this train of thought the team enrolled with the idea of putting up an old container filled with native plants which, together with the wall mirrors, would depict an infinite garden . With this temporary installation it was intended to enhance not only what Filipstad once was but, most of all, how Filipstad can become in the near future .

FIELDWORKAS OFFICES

CRUISE (existing)TERMINAL

THE CITY AND THE FJORD, FILIPSTAD, OSLO

Master project at Fjord og Byen landscape architecture studio taught by prof. Jeppe Aagaard Andersen and prof. Elisabeth Ulrika Sjödahl, AHO spring 2015

Filipstad has been Oslo’s main harbour and ferry terminal since the XIX century. But now, since the city has grown so much around it in the last few decades, the harbour facilities are being proposed to be moved to the southeast shore.

COMMERCIAL FACILITIES BRIDGE SPORTS COURT

PUBLICGREENHOUSE

SPORTS COURT

FJORDWILDLIFE MUSEUM

In this context it is found a great opportunity to connect Oslo’s promenade and offer a whole new range of housing and facilities in the city centrer, avoiding the inhabitants’ dependence on vehicles. In this train of thought, most of the preexisting warehouses would be demolished except for the Kaffe AS abreast warehouses - which would be refurbished as a public greenhouse - the Fieldwork AS office building, and the ferry terminal . There would also be three new landmarks: a cranked canal , sports courts and a sports pavilion - to enhance recreational activities on the furthest area, along with the viewpoint interest - and a water mirror square - which could become a skating ring during the cold weather . This water mirror square, where the new potential Fjord Wildlife Museum would take place, would also hold the new extension of the metro line and station, and be accessible by pedestrians by the new bridge , provided with retail and belvederes in all its extension. This pedestrian bridge, inspired in Vecchio bridge in Florence, would be a key element concerning the promenade connection and dynamization all year around.

STUDENT HOUSING, MIDTBYKVARTALET, TRONDHEIM

Master project at Boligfortteting i Dybden architecture studio taught by prof. Håkon Vigsnæs and prof. Espen Vatn, AHO autumn 2014

The city center of Trondheim is, like many other small and medium-sized norwegian cities, in process of being drained of commercial trade due to the escape to residential areas and shopping centers in the city’s outskirts. Having this in mind, it was given to each student a different city block from Trondheim’s Midtby district in order to conceive a project that would answer back to this issue.

Concerning the block given, I proposed the refurbishment of two existing buildings - kept as residential and furniture shop - and the demolition of other two - a clothing shop and a small residential building.

The new structure was designed to be a student housing complex , holding either in dividual rooms, shared rooms, dormitory and apartments. Regarding the ground floor, besides bike parking, garbage rooms and laundry, there were designed a cafeteria, a kindergarten and a small commercial facility independent from the housing complex.

There was also planned a new square in the interior of the block , in direct rela tion with the cafeteria. Thus, the cafeteria’s glass walls would visually connect this new square with the neighbouring street , Gjelvangveita , providing the possibility of drawing new visitors to the inner block square.

AND COFFE SHOP AT CORDOARIA, PORTO

International colloquium and workshop ‘Arquitectura, Desenho e Representação: metodologias de desenho no ensino de projecto’ teamwork, FAUP September 2013 led by Angelo Bucci, Givaldo Medeiros, Joubert Lancha, Paulo Castral, Simone Vizioli

For six intensive days, selected FAUP students were invited to enroll with architects/ teachers from São Paulo, Brazil, in different teamwork groups. The intention was to debate over Porto’s abandoned sites inside its densified urban mesh, and conceive a proposal for the empty lot besides the High Court of Porto, a XX century building of Estado Novo architectural style. The site takes place between Cordoaria and Virtudes gardens , which did lead us to conceive this project based on the connection of these two . Hence, the proposed coffee shop - under the cantilever - came up as the key element clutching the path ways together . On the other hand, the hostel’s main entrance was designed on the highest elevation of the site, to the Street Campo dos Mártires da Pátria , not directly connected to any of the public pathways. This way, this main entrance became an op portunity for a terrace overlooking Virtudes Garden, not only sheltered from the city’s movement but also featuring a more inviting entrance for the hostel.

CULTURAL CENTER, PORTO

Master project taught by prof. Madalena Pinto da Silva, FAUP 2012/13

Right beside Porto’s XIX century custom house, Alfândega do Porto , there’s a large plot that used to have a train station for goods and merchandise. Since the customhouse dropped its original purpose, this huge site has not yet found a better urban function than the parking lot it is today. As for the customhouse, it has become a congress center on a 90s intervention by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. The master project task was to design a cultural center which would provide, among other facilities, an auditorium, a showroom, a multipurpose lounge, a cafeteria, lectur ers housing and car park, as well as the urbanistic design of the surroundings . For the latter, it was proposed the enhancement of the riverside pathway, opening up the possibility of its extension in between the customhouse and the river - which is still to this day private property - and thus connecting the city’s promenade . As for the cul tural center building, its cantilever was conceived playing along with the tree alignment to provide both shade and wind protection along the pathway . Also, part of its fa cilities were designed partially underground as a way of avoiding the superimposition of the cultural center’s building towards the Alfândega do Porto , designing thus a terrace square on the roof of these facilities, overlooking the Douro river and the new grit garden .
