Thank you for choosing Cape Fear Academy's Summer Programs! We hope your child is excited and ready to participate in fun, unique, and dynamic programs that will create memories to last a lifetime. Whether your child chooses to be a princess for the week, hang out on the CFA ranch, dares to walk the plank or become a video game designer or a baker, he/she will not be disappointed! Cape Fear Academy's Summer Programs offer engaging, educational and exciting opportunities for a positive summer experience. This year, we are excited to offer new STEM programs, more sports options, and enrichment programs that think outside of the box.

Summer Programs will offer an extended care option for those only attending a morning or afternoon camp. If your camper would like to stay after his/her morning camp until 1 pm, or be dropped off at 12 pm before his/her afternoon camp, you may pay a $5 convenience fee. Summer Programs will still offer Lunch Bunch at no charge for those campers attending both a morning and an afternoon camp. Lunch Bunch and Extended care registration is through the camp office only. Don't forget that ONLINE Registration is just a click away at www.capefearacademy.org. Join all of your favorite storybook friends in this weeklong imaginary adventure! Mixing, baking and eating pink cupcakes until your fellow Pinkerbelles turn pink? High Tea in the plaza while you munch on deliciousness from the Eloise menu? Making perfectly posh paper dolls all while wearing your iridescent extraordinary feather boas? Each morning campers will begin their day by reading the storybook theme for that day and their imaginations will quickly begin to unfold. Join all of your favorite super heroes as campers save the day! Campers will dress up each day as a different super hero and will work on their superhuman powers and extraordinary talents. Campers will help unfreeze Batman and Superman who became frozen by Mr. Freeze, make superhero cuffs that even the Hulk cannot break and create creative and crazy masks that will frighten off all villains. Indestructible shields will be created and made that are even too strong for Captain America to use and on the last day campers will create their very own extraordinary cape so they are prepared for the outside world. So many memories, so little time! This fun and memorable camp will help participants cherish memories by preserving them from the picture to the paper. Campers will learn how to crop photos, journal their thoughts, and use unique embellishments, pens and paper to preserve their memories with creativity. The highlight will be the creative collectors’ collage that campers create and take home at the end of the week. This is a camp you will not forget! Cost: $165 Instructor: Dena Collie, CFA parent

Ultimate Frisbee June 6 – 10 9:00 a.m. – 12: 00 p.m.

Rising grades 2-5

Join in on the Frisbee Fun! The weeklong fun in the sun active camp will allow campers to learn the ins and the outs of this exciting and fast-paced sport. Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport with unique characteristics like self-officiating and coed play at the highest levels. Not only will you get great exercise and have fun playing Ultimate, you will learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, and other character-building values. Players will have the opportunity to play on a disc golf course on Friday. *Friday will be a longer day. Easy Engineering 101

Irish Step Dancing

June 6 – 10 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Rising grades 2-5

Are you a problem solver, an organizer, a communicator, a calculator or a designer? Are you the type of person who wants to know how things work? Then you just might be destined to become an engineer! Come use your creativity and problem solving skills to explore various engineering disciplines in our Engineering 101 Camp! Use your science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to engage in real-world engineering problems such as building bridges, airplane assembly and reloading fuel bundles in a nuclear plant, just to name a few. Through hands-on projects and access to guest speakers from local industry, you can learn about the different types of engineering and explore engineering as a career option. Camp will conclude on Friday with a visit to the Port, the Battleship and local bridges to study the functioning and real life applications of engineering. Cost: $165 Instructor: Meade McFarlane, CFA Middle School Teacher and CFA Soccer Coach

Calling all lads and lasses! Join Carrie Falino, an Eastern Regional Irish step dancer champion who has appeared at Carnegie Hall and on Good Morning America for a fun-filled week of Irish step dancing and Irish culture! Throughout this week, you will learn individual reel and jig steps, and, after each day, you’ll be dancing the whole way home! On the last day, a small performance for parents and friends will show off all that has been learned. Cost: $165 Instructor: Carrie Falino, CFA Lower School Teacher

Survivor by the Sea: Skills and Tools of Survival June 6 – 10 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Rising grades 3-7

Do you have what it takes to survive out in the big wide world? Survivor Camp will feature a series of daily challenges, puzzles, survival crafts, surreal scavenger hunts and competitions on campus throughout the week. There will be a "Tribal Council", but unlike the show, no one is voted off. Instead, campers will vote for a Survivor of the Day, culminating with a Survivor of the Week. Remember, it’s a jungle out there!

Reptile Rage June 6 – 10 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Lizards and turtles and snakes! Oh my! Join us for a slithering, scaly, fun time at our Reptile Camp this summer! This camp is sure to thrill the reptile lover in your family. Participants will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some rascally reptiles throughout the week. They will study a variety of reptile species (especially those local to our own community), learn about their natural habitats, and investigate new and current conservation efforts, both locally and around the world. Participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups to design a habitat for a rescued reptile. As a culminating activity, campers will also visit the Cape Fear Serpentarium in downtown Wilmington. Every activity in the camp is designed with a love of reptiles and conservation in mind. It’s never too early to begin learning about the classic game of tennis. Campers will work on hitting techniques, hand eye coordination, positioning and strokes. Each day participants will be able to work one on one and also practice with others on what they have learned. This introductory camp will incorporate fun games and drills so campers learn while having fun! Cost: $175 Instructor: Gretchen Soule, CFA Lower School Teacher

Throughout the week, mermaids will enjoy a variety of mermaid-themed activities, such as creating and making their very own mermaid tails, finding pearls from shells deep in the sea, designing dazzling under the sea crowns, and making delicious and yummy mermaid treats. Mermaids will sneak to life on land as they search for mermaid pools and shell hunt to find rare and unique seashells to make necklaces that will be the talk of the sea. Lights, Camera, Action! This fun and exciting program will allow students to work directly with an instructor from the field of film and video production. Students produce, direct, shoot and edit their own short films. Students will learn to utilize titles, transitions, music, special effects and live-action video techniques while developing leadership, communication, project management and creative technical skills. Students work in a video production studio environment equipped with Panasonic HMC150 HD video cameras and Mac-based editing software Final Cut Pro X. Through hands-on physical production students learn first-hand how to shoot and edit their own short films. A professional instructor with over twenty years’ of experience in film, television and video production guides students through this fun and exciting educational filmmaking experience.

Campers will explore film and digital photography in this dynamic hands-on camp. Each day will combine classroom lessons with photography activities. A field trip to a film lab will allow students to experience printing in a darkroom and see how their film is processed. Topics covered include composition, perspective, lighting, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed, and camera functions. Students will also edit their own photographs using Adobe Photoshop. A film camera and/or digital camera is required for the camp. *Due to limited space the minimum enrollment must be met two weeks prior to camp running. Cape Fear Academy turns into Ponyville for a weeklong adventure of crafts, games, pony visits and more! Each day is magic as campers arrive at Equestria to begin their adventure. Lead unicorn pony Twilight Sparkle will help campers create and make their very own sparkly and glittery unicorn horn to wear each day so that they may join their other pony friends for a lasting adventure. Each day a new pony friend will come to life. Twilight Sparkle will bring her deep understanding of friendship to camp and will share with others her magic and even allow campers to have their very own cutie mark. Rainbow Dash will bring good weather and blue skies to camp and all campers will be able to make their very own pet tortoise Tank to take home. This camp provides the perfect opportunity to discover and enjoy football while learning the basic fundamentals and skills needed to be successful in the sport. As for experienced players, this camp will give you an opportunity to enhance your ability and learn new techniques and fundamentals from high school level coaches. The program is designed to be fun while teaching the fundamentals of the game. The emphasis will be on skill development, conditioning, leadership and team play. It will include drills, demonstrations, competitions and games. Players will go through various rotating stations in which they learn skills of all positions, including quarterback, wide receiver, running back, offensive and defensive lineman, linebackers, defensive backs, punting, snapping, kicking and more. Stop Motion Animation June 27 – July 1 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Would you like to be the producer of your very own animated film? If the answer is yes, then this is the place for you. This animation technique is used to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Students will develop their own storyboard and choose materials to create their own animated film. At the heart of every video game, web site, and animated movie is a talented graphic designer. Throughout the week, campers learn about the industry, concepts, and skills needed to become a graphic designer. Campers will work on design basics and Photoshop, remove backgrounds of photos they have taken of themselves to make posters using their silhouettes, be introduced to typography, learn all about color schemes and meanings and MORE! At the end of the week campers will have a collection of all of their work in their very own portfolio to take home. Cowboys and Cowgirls will have their own loot bag for the gold rush, will visit the trading post daily for the newest western digs and will even have their own stick horse to get them around the ranch. Harry Potter and the CFA Stone

Campers will explore film and digital photography in this dynamic hands-on camp. Each day will combine classroom lessons with photography activities. A field trip to a film lab will allow students to experience printing in a darkroom and see how their film is processed. Topics covered include composition, perspective, lighting, depth of field, aperture, shutter speed, and camera functions. Students will also edit their own photographs using Adobe Photoshop. This class is designed for high school students who will be taking a Biology course in the fall. Drew Sarmiere (BS Biology, former high school biology and chemistry teacher and founder of Peak Learning Solutions) will be teaching the course. Drew developed the curriculum for this course specifically for students entering the rigorous pre-IB (International Baccalaureate) program in which he taught in order to give those students a head start on a very challenging class. The course introduces students to concepts such as basic chemistry, biochemistry, cellular biology, cell transport, molecular biology, molecular genetics, photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In addition, Drew has built into the curriculum a study skills component which teaches students important study skills which lead to greater success in biology and other classes. Who wouldn’t want to hang out with local Lego® friends Mia, Emma, Andrea, Stephanie and Olivia in the morning at CFA? Join Lego® friends and camp friends all while building fun sets such as Olivia’s Tree House, Lego Friends® Adventure Camper, Emma’s Horse Camper and more. Lego lovers will build sets, create sets and work together each day on new and exciting Lego Friends® activities. Calling all sports fans ready to have a jam packed week of sports, conditioning, strength and more. Each day students will have the opportunity to TRY a new sport that will be offered for those eager to learn, perform and perfect. Lacrosse, tennis, soccer, basketball and more will be offered throughout the week and stations, drills and technique work will be taught daily. These superstars will learn proper stretching techniques, how to refuel after a long workout or big game, how to incorporate core work with athletic moves, healthy habits, cardio strength and more. You won’t know what your favorite sport is unless you TRY it out first!

Rising grades 6-8

This popular camp is a week-long intensive overview of the tools students need for maximized learning. Skills taught in this course include: note-taking systems, principles of memory and memorizing, paragraph and essay writing structure, improved reading speed and comprehension, test preparation and test-taking strategies, discovering and understanding your own learning style, logic and critical thinking and SAT skills.

So do you think YOU can tap, break it down, twirl, acro and JUST DANCE?! This fun and energetic dance camp will study a different dance style each day and will focus on technique, positions, movement and coordination all while learning the art of dance. Dancers will work on perfecting dance styles each day and move and grove on and off stage. Dancers will show off their moves with a performance at the end of the week to WOW the audience for a standing ovation!

Algebra 1 Kickoff August 1 – 5 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Rising grades 7-9

The Advanced Algebra I Kickoff Camp will be led by Cape Fear Academy’s Math Department Chair Cody Adams. The Algebra I Kickoff Camp will introduce students to several of the topics covered in the early units of Algebra I. The focus will be on strengthening some of the basic skills needed to be successful in Algebra I while learning some new topics that students will see in the upcoming school year. The course is a great way to improve on areas of weakness or to just get a head start in Algebra 1. Cost: $155 Instructor: Cody Adams, CFA Upper School Math Department Chair

Fairy Tale Friends August 1 – 5 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Rising grades K-3

Once upon a time in a forest, there lived tiny fairy friends who fluttered freely! Let your imagination flitter and float free as campers join in with all of their fairy friends for a magical week in the fairy forest of CFA. Fairy houses will be discovered in the forest that is surrounded by critters, flowers and plants. Campers will build a fairy home out of sticks, feathers and more and have fairy furniture sure to be the right fit. They will catch fairies with fizzy, fairy potions and create unique fairy food that is sure to be delicious. Sew Unique August 1 – 5 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Rising grades 2-5

A stitch in time will be the theme for this unique and introductory sewing camp. Campers will learn what basic sewing materials are needed to create cute and fun sewing projects. Campers will receive a sewing kit so that they may get to work and create unique projects such as a felt vase, finger puppets and even transform a sock into something special. Passport to the World August 1 – 5 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Rising grades 3-6

Have you ever had a passport? Have you ever traveled out of the country or wish you could? Well, get ready, because in just one week campers will be world travelers as they navigate and travel to countries including China, Thailand, Ireland and others! Campers will experience and embrace the culture by tasting and cooking traditional food, visiting local venues and museums to brush up on history, create art, listen to traditional music and so much more! So pack your suitcases and get ready for five new stamps on your passport! ID and imagination required! Cost: $165 Instructor: Ali McLoota, UNCW Student and CFA Lacrosse Coach

Cape Fear Academy students have required reading assignments over the summer. They need to have a thorough understanding of what they have read in order to complete the tests and assignments they will be given upon their return to school in August. During this week-long course, students will review themes and connecting ideas, summarize and paraphrase, go over key quotes, organize paragraphs, and take notes to complete their understanding of what they have read. Camper Cancellations

Registrations must be cancelled for each enrolled camper two weeks prior to the first day of camp. A $50 processing fee will be kept by Cape Fear Academy, and the remaining balance will then be refunded. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received within two weeks of the camp.

CFA Cancellations

Cape Fear Academy reserves the right to cancel any camp due to insufficient enrollment. All campers will be notified of any cancellation two weeks prior to the start of the program. In the event of a Cape Fear Academy camp cancellation, ALL payments will be refunded in full, including the $50 processing fee.

Rain or Shine

All camps will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, athletic camps will be held in the gymnasium.

Security

For the sake of safety and security, children may not be on Cape Fear Academy grounds unattended. Campers will be considered unattended if they arrive more than 15 minutes prior to camp or if they are still here 15 minutes after camp has ended.
