Words and phrases not in any alpha order. “Going to come” –I’m coming back. “Coming to come” – soon, or slow progress “ah gone” goodbye, I am going now, or simply “gone” “jook” --to hit or poke, as in “He jook the breadfruit down” or “Don’t jook ants nest” “Don’t jook ants next” equivalent to “Let sleeping dogs lie.” “overtake” a vehicle passing another “just now” means any time in the future—sort of like the Spanish “manana” “ah dey” response to “how you?” meaning I am fine “dey dey” I am really ok “Morning morning” ,” good night good night” (If it is nice say it twice) 20

“Good night”—a greeting any time after dark—not necessarily a departure “ting” a thing, as in anyting, a drink of effervescent grapefruit, a man might have a little “ting on the side” --a very useful word “drop one” what you call to the conductor on the mini-bus and you are ready to get off “wha gwan” a question in greeting, what is going on? If someone offers you “ba-bon-day”, if you are a man, just take it. It is a drink made from the bark of a tree, “bois bande” and apparently encourages very man-like properties.

You can learn a lot of the vernacular by listening to Grenadian Paul Keens-Douglas. A comdedian, philosopher, performance artist, his CD’s are available at Art and Soul Books at Spiceland Mall. 21

A special little nook in the neck of Clarks Court Bay…too special to miss! Whisper Cove Marina, on the South coast of Grenada, is a unique combination of ● a marina ● a butcher and deli shop ● and informal restaurant serving all the produce from the shop ● and a casual bar offering expresso coffee and draft beer throughout the day.

Uncool stuff to avoid: Little green apples you may see on the beach. Don’t pick them up and please don’t eat them. The poisonous Manchaneel apple will burn your skin. Lion Fish. Sorry, but we have a few. Along with Sea urchins, they can really hurt if you step on one. If you do, get medical help, soon. Don’t leave your things sitting on the beach. Treat Grenada as you would any international city. Things may look laid back, but a theft would spoil your holiday. And lock up your room and your car, securing your valuables. Don’t look to buy narcotics here. Again, something that can spoil your holiday. Don’t try to bargain the price down significantly from our arts and crafts people, or the spice vendors. Haggling prices is not part of our culture, and it hurts our feelings. It makes us feel that you don’t value our hard work. 27

So this is not the end. This is the beginning. If you think of something that you would like to have included in Grenada Guru, just send me an email at Grenada Guru. We don’t know everything, but we know something. I think that might be our motto. In the end everything will work out. That’s how we know its not the end yet. Everything hasn’t worked out. 30
