A proposal for Porto Marghera, starting from the interpretation of its fragmentary industrial structure. The project aims to investigate the first industrial settlement of Porto Marghera, reading this area both as a water gate and a mainland gate for Venice, and exploring its potentiality not only as a place of production, but also as a contemporary city where arts and culture are performed and shared. Moreover Porto Marghera becomes a place of confrontation between the human scale and the industrial architecture scale: the project task is to find the human dimension again inside the industrial buildings belonging to the world of machines and suggesting a new life for these work cathedrals. //

The labs, the theatre and the practice rooms are housed in the building arms which are perpendicular to the overhead travelling crane lines. These arms are indipendent in their structure from the overhead travelling crane lines, and the linear building, which hots the distribution system.

The project deals with the addition theme, inside an ancient industrial building rising in a defined urban context. The analysis of the existing building through its architectonic, materic and constructive characteristics has been the starting point for the project, with the aim to put in evidence the new potentialities of the ancient building itself, in the respect of the layers of the past. A particular attention has been dedicated to the structural project and to the strategies to be enterprised for giving coherence and clearness to the architectonic elements. //

A
project for
P orto M arghera
The project was born by an idea on the potentialities of Porto Marghera, seen as a contemporary city and experimental place for new housing models, which can be interpreted as attractors in the urban system of Venezia-Mestre, in a picture of progressive de-industrialization and ecolgical development. The project represents the interaction between the industrial contest - which scale is imposed by the cranes and by the big container ships - and a new residential system with studios, spaces for young people and art. Since the area is recognized by an imposing dismissed malt house to be demolished, it has been chosen to maintain the volumetric impact, choosing for the planning of a goup of buildings whose monolitic character can be measured with the industrial context, but, at the same time, opened on the canal and containing open spaces, so as to define public squares characterized by a more human dimension. //

The place where fiume Marzenego runs is one of the European territories of the urban sprawl. It is characterized by an isotropic condition, in which some key elements can be recognized: the water net and the wet lands, the infrastructural net, agriculture, the urban and productive sprawl. The hypothesis which has guided the research is that the territory crossed by a river may become better, working on public infrastructures and interpreting the existing characteristics just to define a new vision of the landscape. The presence of industrial districts is a further topic not only as far as the analyzed portion is concerned, but also the whole territory in Veneto. The industrial plates, sometimes wide, are generally closed to the main rivers, and these deeply waterproof fields are often layered with hydraulic risk areas. Starting from the hydraulic risk and from the need of territory maintenance, the occasion to think about a project of re-use of the territory has been furnished. It can exploit the potentialities of the industrial areas and the amount of the given public spaces at the best. Exploiting the isotropic condition of the analized territory, three different case studies have been selected, re-interpreting the landscape from the relation between water and soil.

The design studio deals with the theme of a contemporary project in those places where time has layered its traces, in the landscape of Veneto region, where urban spawl takes place. For this reason the project wasn’t asked to approach the typical themes and frameworks of a traditional city, and small towns of Veneto region become a place of experimentation for contemporary housing possibilities, strictly connected with rural and archaeological landscape. In the chosen landscape, traces of roman thermae, streets, courts, villas, are still recognizable, and the project’s task was to imagine new ways of living giving value to historical layers.

The workshop deals with the theme of archaeology and its enhancement through the architectural project of a overhead path above the Roman archeological remains in Mariana, Corse. During this five-days workshop, a design that can deal with the opacity issue, the transparency and the filter to relate the archaeology through a contemporary and evocative language, has been developed. The project bases on the concept of “camera obscura”, a visual device used to capture a photographic image of the reality, through the photographer’s interpretation. In the same way the project’ aim is to propose an interpretation of the reality in the archaeological landscape, modified by the light and by the gaze of people who want to experience those devices above the Roman archaeological remains.

The river, a natural, infrastructural and urban element, becomes the spine that reorganizes the whole city, connecting the city centre to the Culture House. Along it a network of new inter-modal transport nodes are concentrated, from which the new cycle-pedestrian connections across the river are generated. It is dedicated to slow mobility and hosts shared spaces suitable for outdoor activities; a continuous element, more conducive to an open space rather than a real square. Its wide and indefinite character can be shaped and interpreted by local people, answering their needs. A new bridge prosecutes the pedestrian path that connects the other side of the fjord. It is an inhabited adaptive bridge, a square on the water, a link between two parts of the city. Its major section encourages its use as an aggregation element. It can host temporary installations or market activities. Its presence allows the construction of a water “arena�, for shows or sporting events. The whole project can be realized in three autonomous phases: firstly the landmark building, establishing a strong connection with the city; secondly the public buildings; thirdly the residences. The project aims at creating a mixed-use settlement, with public functions at the ground floors and residences of different sizes suitable for all. The attention to the urban morphology, the research on landscape and identity, the propose of mixed-use functions, create a project resilient to the city and adaptable to the society needs. //
