The clients Dean and Barbara are remodeling their existing kitchen to better suit their needs. They have four children who help around the kitchen doing dish chores and some baking. They would like to have a custom range hood designed with Dean’s blacksmithing hobby in mind. Dean enjoys cooking and would need adequate counter space for food preparation. Barbara is looking for easy accessibility to cooking utensils, spices, canned goods and storage. Barbara and Dean both enjoy entertaining guests and would like to incorporate wine storage as well as incorporating additional seating within the space. Their current kitchen space is roughly 14’x19’.

2

The overall space is a mixture of elements both feminine and masculine. The key was to keep the range hood the focal point of the kitchen to add made to express Dean’s hobby of blacksmithing. The custom hood features black panels with bronze trim and nail head details along the trim. Because this space is shared, I balanced the overall masculine feel of the industrial range hood with some more traditional cabinet styles as well as some open cabinetry, and a mixture of darker and lighter colors. The backsplash was designed to carry out the details of the bronze nail head trim and to add a touch of color. Because there will be multiple people within this household throughout the years the family is living in this house, there are multiple design considerations which are incorporated to make the space feasible for all ages. The cabinetry incorporates drawer pulls instead of knobs which will make the cabinets easy for all ages to open. The flooring is slip resistant to help aid the grip for both seniors and toddlers. The overall aesthetics of the space were kept to more simple and traditional tastes aside from the range hood, to make sure the design styling would be appropriate as the family continues to live in the home.

Details within the space: The new design of the kitchen flows around a custom range hood which has nail head detailed trim to give a feeling of blacksmith work. This range hood is located on the project south wall which contains most of the cabinetry and abundant counter space for food preparation. Underneath the range hood is a 36 inch cooktop which is placed on top of a 3 gliding drawer cabinet system which has room for a spice compartment, utensils, and pots and pans. A large 83”x77” island is added around the center of the space which includes abundant countertop surface for food preparation and entertainment space, seating for six, a sink, dishwasher, and additional storage cabinetry. Placing the seating closer to the breakfast room enables extra guests to gather in a general location and still be able to communicate. Deep peg drawer cabinetry is located around the dishwasher which makes it easily accessible for both children and seniors who are putting away dishes. The project east wall contains a large section for appliances such as the refrigerator, double oven, microwave, and wine storage. This appliance wall is next to the large island which is used for food preparation, which makes it an ideal location for easy accessible appliances such as the fridge and ovens. Project west’s wall contains a sufficient amount of space for family organization. This area contains a seated desk area with base cabinets that include drawers for filing paperwork, upper custom shelving for additional storage, and a pantry which is within close range of the cooktop.
