Did You Know ? Island Origins The island of Aruba originated in the form of lava eruption beneath the surface of the water around 95 million years ago. The volcanic activity above the surface formed what we call Aruba Lava Formation. The oldest formations are found in Arikok National Park as the tallest hills on the island, Yamanota, Arikok, Sero Cabai and Gran Tonel. The most abundant type of batholiths (or rocks formed under the surface of the earth as lava solidifies) are Tonalite and Hooibergite. Hooibergite is found in the middle of the island. It is the rock the Hooiberg is made of which gave it the name. The only other places on earth where Hooibergite surfaced are Canada and Iceland.

What’s in a Name? The name Aruba theoretically comes from the Arawak language of the Caquetios Indians which are now extinct. The Caquetios, emigrated from what is now northwestern Venezuela and lived mainly in the villages in the areas of Santa Cruz, Tanki Flip and Savaneta. The name Aruba has often been attributed to the phrase “oro huba”, meaning “there was gold”. The first time the name Aruba appeared in a historical document was in 1526 written as part of a study on Indians of the region by Spaniard Gonzalo Oviedo. El nombre de Aruba en teoría proviene de la lengua de los indios Caquetios de la tribu Arawak que se ha extinguido. Did You Know ? Dera Gai Festival “Burying the Rooster”
The Dera Gai (pronounced “dera guy”) is an Aruban tradition celebrated every June. It is a combination of a historical Indian harvest celebration which later joined with the Catholic Church festival day of St. John. While clearing the fields of old crops, huge bonfires were built over which men jumped and challenged others. The 2-day event included burying a rooster up to his neck with a gourd over its head. Musicians would play for each blindfolded man who would dance with a lady dressed in yellow, to honor the blossom of the kibrahacha tree, who was trying to confuse its sense of direction. Then with a stick and blind folded, he was given three chances to find the rooster for his dinner. Dera Gai es una tradición de Aruba que se celebra cada mes de junio. Es una combinación de la histórica cosecha de los indios que luego se unió con el festival de la Iglesia Catolica del día de San Juan. The Tradition of Dande Groups The tradition of Dande (pronounced “dondey”) is an end-of-the year celebration unique to Aruba and one that has existed for over 170 years. Groups of at least seven musicians go from house to house starting right after midnight on new year’s eve, singing a song that serenades the family with good wishes for the coming year. While the musical style and the chorus remains the same, lyrics are improvised for each family The chorus, “O DANDE, Ani nobo”, (a happy new year to you all) is, according to oral history , altered from the Spanish expression “Hay un año nuevo” (“a new year is here”) since “any nobo” does not exist in Papiamento. The Head of Government is the Prime Minister elected every 4 years who holds executive power with a Council of Ministers and is sustained by a 21-member Parliament. Judicial system The safeguarding of the fundamental rights and freedoms, legal certainty and proper administration of the law is under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the cooperation of the Aruban Minister of Justice. Judges of the Common Court in Aruba are appointed by the Queen. Defense and external affairs The Kingdom of the Netherlands is responsible for defense (hence, the Royal Marine Camp in Savaneta) and external political and diplomatic relations.

History of Aruba Aruba attracted the attention of great European powers early on. The arrival of the Spaniards in 1500 was a rude awakening for the Arawak Indians. Searching for treasure in the region, the Spaniards optimistically named the island “ruba oro” (red gold), but soon considered Aruba a useless island. Indian occupation ended abruptly when the entire population abducted by the Spanish and sent to work in the farms in the island of Hispaniola ( now Dominican Republic and Haiti). In 1527, the Spaniards turned their attention to colonizing Aruba; Indians were recruited as laborers and converted to Christianity. The Dutch soon became interested in Aruba for its strategic location. In 1634, the Dutch West India Company, established in Curaçao, sent ships to explore Aruba. Two years later, the Dutch took control from the Spanish. Peter Stuyvesant was named governor of Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. Unlike the Spanish, the Dutch interacted little with the Indians. Our Language
Papiamento is the mother-tongue of Aruba. It is considered a language, not a dialect and it has evolved from several older languages as most languages today have done. The name is derived from the Portuguese verb ‘papear’ which means ‘to ramble’ or to speak incoherently, and the word ‘papiamento’ has derived from the French word ‘parler’ (to speak).
Papiamento is fun! It has its own rhythm, it originated in the 1500’s in order to allow the patrons, who were Portuguese and Spanish missionaries, Dutch merchants, South American traders, Indians and slaves to communicate with each other.
Papiamento es el lenguaje nativo de Aruba. Es considerado un lenguaje, no un dialecto, y ha evolucionado de otros idiomas antiguos al igual que muchos otros. El nombre ha derivado del verbo portugués ‘papear’ que significa divagar o hablar incoherentemente, y la palabra ‘papiamento’, viene de la palabra francesa ‘parler’ que es ‘hablar’. Papiamento es gracioso! Architecture Aruban architecture has humble beginnings, born of common sense and resourcefulness. Providing protection from the harsh sun and wind, the first houses were built of mud (cas di torto) made from softened clay that was trampled by foot, mixed with sand and long-blades of dry grass. Walls were erected from a network of round wooden poles planted short distances apart and woven together by branches. Cornstalks were the original roof materials, later replaced by dried strips of pillar cacti and ultimately by roof tiles. Floors were covered with a layer of sand mixed with clay. These modest dwellings had only a living and sleeping area; food was cooked outdoors over a fire. Cunuco (country houses) houses were simple structures with high slanted roofs built in the east-west direction of the wind for crossventilation, so that without air conditioning the house was still cool. After 1920, lime and coral stone were replaced by concrete as the principal building material. A rectangular tank (cistern) at the side of the house

If you legally own real estate on Aruba you are subject to property tax. The property tax amounts to 0.4% of the market value of your property. The market value is determined by the Aruban tax authorities for a period of 5 years, at the beginning of this period. A general exemption applies of USD 33,520. This amount is doubled for married couples, if the real estate is in the name of both persons. If you buy real estate on Aruba, real estate transfer tax is due. The real estate transfer tax amounts to 3% of the purchase price if the purchase price is USD 139,664 or less. The real estate transfer tax amounts to 6% if the purchase price is more than USD 139,664. Finally, if you are a non-resident individual and you rent out your property on Aruba, you have to pay individual income tax on Aruba. The taxable income is the gross rental income, minus the costs of your property, like – for example – insurance, maintenance, property tax, agency fees for the rental program, etc.

Caha di Orgel ‘Caha di Orgel’ (Organ Box) of Aruba had its origins in Western Europe during the 16th Century, in Berlin (Germany) to be precise. From that time on it was slowly introduced and accepted all over Europe, Especially on Italy, where it has been told that Italians where the ones whom took it eventually to Venezuela around year 1880. The Caha di Orgel was introduced to Aruba by Horacio Sprok, a native to our sister island Curacao which fell in love at first sight with this instrument on one trip he made to Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Caha di Orgel, also known as ‘Piano di Caya’ (Street Piano), was used in the streets of the island for entertainment purposes and
‘Caha di Orgel’ (Caja de Órgano) de Aruba, tuvo sus orígenes en Europa Occidental durante el siglo 16, en Berlín (Alemania) para ser exactos. Desde aquel tiempo el instrumento fue introducido y aceptado lentamente en el resto de Europa, especialmente en Italia, de donde se dice que fueron los italianos quienes eventualmente lo llevaron a Venezuela en el año 1880. Caha di Orgel you see it at first, cause it actually has nothing to do with an ‘Organ’ (Orgel), but instead it is more like a ‘Cylinder Piano’. This inadequate denomination derives from the period where the Dutch Classic Draai Orgel, which creates sounds trough the traditional pipes of an organ; was mixed up with the Caha di Orgel, that creates its sound when a little hammer hits the strings of the piano through an intern mechanism. Nevertheless, both instruments work with the same system, the turn of a hand crank. It consists out of 24 strings for harmony, 10 strings for chords, and 6 strings for bass. The cylinder consists out of 3 pieces, 1 wooden cylinder, a crown cylinder with 64 teeth, and a metal bar. Nowadays a Caha di Orgel is considered to be one of the pillars of our culture, and it still sounds as it did a 100 years ago.

Ayo Rock Formations: Considered a sacred site by the island’s original inhabitants (the Arawak Indians). Rock drawings, dating back thousands of years, are found at this site, where huge stones appear to have been scattered like marbles by an errant giant. Bushiribana Ruins: The remains of gold smelter that was built of natural stone in 1825 and functioned for most of the 19 century. In its 90 years of operation, produced some 3 million pounds of gold.

My name is Alycia , I’m from upstate New York and am the third of four generations that have been coming to Aruba since the mid 1980’s. Ever since I took my first step off the plane in May of 1994, I fell in love with the island. I came down with my Aunt for two weeks and have been coming back ever since. One of the very first things I do when I arrive on the Island is pick up the Aruba Experience book at the hotel. This book has always been very informative – not only for the first time visitor but for return visitors as well. In 2012, my aunt and I flew on one flight while my boyfriend, Matt, was scheduled to arrive a few hours later. I was so excited as this was his first time on the island and I could not wait to show him around. For the past 18 years , I have done a lot of things on Aruba but still have not seen it all. This vacation, I was staying for two weeks and he’s staying for one. We both were very excited about our vacation and had so much planned for us to do. Saturday night we went to Pizza Bob’s to unwind from our long day of traveling – a tradition that we do on the first night on the island. We were all exhausted so headed back to our ‘home away from home’ for a good night sleep. The next morning while preparing breakfast, Matt disappeared for a while then came back and said he had something to show me, ‘Hurry up and bring the camera’ is all he said. As we walked out and on to the beach, I saw the words ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME’ written in the sand. Matt got down on one knee and proposed to me. I of course said yes. This is one of the best memories I will hold forever and we are planning our wedding on the island in 2014. Oh, and yes, I will drown the gown!
