The Village Messenger - Summer 2023

In an emergency, Civil Defence Emergency Management and other emergency services will be on the scene, but they cannot reach everyone immediately You could be stuck at home without basic services, such as electricity, gas, drinking water, flushing toilets, and phones, for days or even weeks. Think about what you will need in an emergency:

Do you have enough food and water for your household?

How will you cook and store food without electricity?

Do you have enough water for everyone in your household? Does this include water to cook and wash with?

What about family members who need medication?

Do you have enough?

Do you have a baby who may need extra supplies (e g nappies, formula)?

Do you have enough food and water for your pets?

Annual Pirongia Craft Day

Sunday 24 September

Have a grab bag

If you have to evacuate, you will need essential items that you can carry with you It’s ideal to store these items in a grab bag, ready for you to take if you have to leave in a hurry – but if that’s out of reach right now, figure out what you’ve already got in your whare/home, and make sure you know where these items are kept so you can grab them quickly. If you can, ensure that everyone has easy access to a grab bag at mahi/work and at home You can store a grab bag in your car so that you are never far from it. Basic supplies to have in a grab bag in case you have to evacuate:

Torches and batteries.

Radio (solar, wind up or battery powered)

Hand sanitiser

Copies of important documents (online or paper). Take a photo of an important document on your smartphone

Walking shoes, warm clothes, raincoat and hat

First aid kit and prescription medicine.

Water and snack food (remember babies and pets too) Chargers for your phone and other devices you may need If your car has a 12v power outlet or cigarette lighter, consider including a USB phone charger which will plug in to it

Road rehabilitation and bridge repairs will take place at the northern entry to Pirongia, commencing Monday 27 February.

A road closure will be in place for two weeks from mid-March when the rebuild is taking place near the bridge, detours will be in place, with heavy vehicles advised to use SH3. Prior to this stop/go traffic management and a temporary speed limit will be in place.

FROM THE CLASSIFIEDS OF THE TE AWAMUTU COURIER, SEPTEMBER 1950

Local artist Reasha Pye, of Tails Told, secured funding from Waipā Creative Communities for the stunning murals - one depicting lively kōkako feeding in Pirongia, and another showing an evocative night scene featuring pekapeka [New Zealand long-tailed bats], ruru [moreporks] and patupaiarehe, the fairy people connected with the maunga. Reasha wanted to inject vitality into the envirocentre to give the projects on the maunga more momentum. She painted the kōkako to be engaging and full of personality and was inspired to include dandelions as a food source for the kōkako by her father, Scott Fraser, a long-time volunteer for PRS.

“He was there at the release of the Tiritiri Matangi kōkako at Pirongia and remembers them going for the dandelions on the lawn of the Pirongia Forest Park Lodge,” said Reasha. “That caused a lot of anxiety. The birds had obviously developed a taste for dandelions on their island home, but that was pest-free and it was safe for them to eat. Here at Pirongia, there were still predators around, especially at the bush edge, so it was a relief when the birds moved deeper into the forest park.” The night scene in the second mural is more about the spiritual side of Pirongia maunga. To complete the murals, key people were invited to share their stories relating to kōkako and add finishing touches.

According to Dr Tame Roa, when King Tāwhiao brought an end to the Māori Land Wars in 1881 at Pirongia Village by laying down a substantial selection of arms, he placed roasted tūī, parrots and wood pigeons, which were food, along with a kōkako on the arms – “te koko, te kaka, te kereru, me te kōkako”. The food offered was to remove the tapu of war, but there was a deeper message for the colonialists because of the kōkako, which was not food. These rangatahi also come from a family where hearing the waiata of the birdlife when they were in the ngahere on the maunga was a given - but it’s not any longer. Their hope is the restoration of the maunga and its hei whaioranga [life force] will be a source of healing for their generation, and having the kōkako back in its home will be an important part of that for Aramoana, Mihi and Maia Davis-Uerata.

COMMUNITY CENTRE UPDATE

More than 1000 people pass through the Community Centre and Chapel every monthas well as the market, there are exercise groups, Scouts, a school, a playgroup and private events There's also the busy, and always interesting Sharing Shed. There's always space for more though - please do get in touch if your organisation needs space as a one-off or more permanent arrangement.

Work is ongoing on the building, with further upgrades in the pipeline, but we also need more willing workers to help We'd love to find someone to tend the (small but not currently very well-loved) garden in front of the chapel.

Pirongia Mountain Bike club hosts national XCO biking event

On Sunday, the 5th of February, the Pirongia Mountain Bike Club hosted the National XCO Series Round 3 on behalf of Mountain Bike New Zealand The XCO series is an annual event that usually happens in the main centres, but it was opened up to smaller clubs wanting to organize The Pirongia MTB Club signed up to host and met the criteria needed. The event is the first National racing event for Pirongia

The course had to be approved by Mountain Bike NZ officials, which had been under threat of cancellation due to the amount of rain. Competitors got the opportunity to practice on Saturday, before the race day

Over the two races, there were almost 80 competitors in over 12 categories of age from all over New Zealand Viewing areas for spectators were dotted around the park, using the existing forestry bait lines

The conditions in Round 1 and 2 were dry and dusty compared to Round 3 were muddy Which made for interesting riding and more technical experience required. Perfect conditions for the many support crew and spectators who attended the event

Many thanks to the sponsors: Real Experience, captured some incredible photos and has been working to get these edited.Evo Cycles for having a bike mechanic onsite for the day Accessman Group handles the BBQ and our gear hire. ZOOM Design and Print tackling all of our signage needs
