hard to flip through the pages of your 08•10 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

Order your local Zip Code shirt today at www.WearYourZip.com

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

P.S. Don’t forget to check out our 2016 Real Estate Issue featuring our local REALTORS® and Lenders starting on page 22. There are many elements that go into building a solid community, and our local celebrity real estate professionals and lenders certainly play a huge part. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses.

he 4th Annual Carlsbad Spirit Benefit Concert was recently held at The Stag and Lion Pub & Grille in an effort to raise funds to provide scholarships for CHS seniors. Hosted by the Aron Gunner Memorial Scholarship Foundation, the event included a silent auction with over 90 items donated from local businesses, raffles every 15 minutes, and live entertainment from local bands such as Taken By Canadians, The Paragraphs, and The Art Dealers. Nearly 300 attendees helped to raise $22,000 by the end of the night. The Aron Gunner Memorial Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit established to honor the memory of Carlsbad native Aron Gunner, who passed away at the age of 23 in 2012. Carole Gunner commented, “Aron found his greatest joy in friendships and family. His infectious smile, beautiful eyes, warm hugs, and eternal optimism endeared him to many. It is with Aron’s spirit of compassion for others that the foundation moves forward.” For more information on the foundation visit www.arongunner.org. ¢

hen it comes to sports, Jordan Hickerson is on her game. She plays soccer, indoor volleyball, baseball, softball, beach volleyball, and participates in the Carlsbad State Junior Lifeguards in the summer. “This is my first year playing competitive beach volleyball but it is my favorite sport so far,” explained Jordan. “Playing at the beach with my partner Ava is fun and we like playing tournaments together.” The Hickerson family has lived here for six years. Jordan and her twin Jax are fourth graders at Magnolia Elementary. Cameron, the oldest of the Hickerson children, is now a teen. They have a pug named Miss Polly Pickles. Jordan shared that their family likes to play games together, BBQ, and swim in

the pool. She and her brothers play Minecraft, building houses and roller coasters together. Jordan has played competitive soccer since age six. She’s both goalie and forward. Her inspiration for soccer comes from watching pro Hope Solo, a goalie in USA Women’s Soccer. For three years she has played indoor volleyball. “On my team we rotate to all positions, but I like spiking the ball back over the net to the other team,” shared Jordan. She and Jax started in baseball but later switched to softball, which they’ve played the last four years. She plays first base, shortstop, and pitcher, and reminisced, “I like getting a good hit, coming home to score, and being an All-Star.” One of the best parts about being in Junior Lifeguards, according to Jordan, is participating in the Junior Lifeguard competition. She elaborated, “It’s where Carlsbad kids compete with Oceanside and Camp Pendleton teams. There is a longdistance run, long-distance swim, team swim and run events.” She’s up for the challenge with seemingly endless energy. Off the field, Jordan likes school, and added, “It’s because of all the extra activities we have, like Field Day and Science Day.” Her favorite subject is art where she enjoys painting and drawing. Jordan wants to continue playing sports throughout her school years and into college. “Maybe I’ll even become a professional beach volleyball player, coaching kids like me when I get older,” she mused. When the ball is tossed in her court, it’s a given that Jordan will know what to do, and how well to do it. 

Gold Ribbon Schools

CUSD SCHOOLS RECEIVE HONORS FOR ACADEMIC STANDARDS

P

acific Rim, Hope, and Aviara Oaks Elementary Schools are among three Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) elementary schools selected to receive honors under the California Department of Education’s Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program. The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize schools that have made gains in implementing California’s new academic and performance standards. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, “These schools shine as bright beacons for others, putting forth an exemplary effort to ensure that every student is ready for 21st century college and careers. California teachers are developing an education model for the nation, training the students of today to be the problem-solvers, inventors, and pioneers of tomorrow.” Only 772 elementary schools throughout the state were selected out of the nearly 6,000 that were eligible to apply. The CUSD schools are three of only 29 schools in San Diego County to be honored this year. CUSD’s Gold Ribbon Schools were honored at a special ceremony in Anaheim in mid-May. “We are thrilled that these outstanding schools are being recognized,” said CUSD Superintendent Suzette Lovely. “Every day, in every classroom, our teachers strive to provide every student an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment. The instructional team – teachers, parents, administrators, and classified staff – are focused on fostering the skills our students need for success.” To learn more about CUSD schools visit www.carlsbadusd.k12.ca.us. ¢

The Arayas Love Carlsbad for Its Perfect Balance of Family and Fun by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Samantha Gleaton Photography

J

ohn and Anna Araya met and became friends in Newport Beach. After a few years, Anna’s move to a new job with JPMorgan in Costa Mesa fortuitously put them both in the same office building. They began meeting for coffee and cookie breaks and there were no limits to conversational topics. “Eventually we wondered, why weren’t we dating?” Anna laughed. “And so it began.” Anna and John were married in 2010 at the Leo Carillo Ranch, and they love the serendipity that Carlsbad is now home. The Arayas moved to Carlsbad in 2014 to be close to family, who have now relocated from Vista. Anna’s mom, Carol von Seiditz, teaches piano at Giacoletti’s Music School

in the Village and her brother, Robert Ruiz, owns Land and Water Company. “We have also gotten to know a lot of our neighbors,” Anna affirmed, “and feel so lucky to live around so many interesting and caring people.” As far as interests, John likes soccer, guitar, watching sports, outings with good friends, and craft beers, while Anna adds traveling, yoga, trying new restaurants, and sleep. Together the family loves music, going out to eat or to the beach, taking the train for an adventure, maybe going out to a Padres game, or simply having friends over to relax in the backyard. Family time in Carlsbad is special, with two sons Justin and Dean. While Anna works in commercial lending, with clients from San Diego to Seattle, John, AKA Mr. Mom/Cruise Director, gets to stay home with the boys. Three-year-old Justin loves anything with cars, trains, trucks, and construction, and is happy as long as he has some kind of vehicle in his hand. He attends Goddard School in Calaveras Hills, and loves the Amazing Athletes program, rotating through all kinds of sports every week. “He looks forward to beach time with Dad and always wants to go under the waves with him,” Anna shared. He also gets to spend one morning a week with Grammy, is a big music listener, looks forward to Legoland (the aquarium is his favorite), and always wants to end his day reading books. “Endless laughs with this boy!” Anna smiled. Ten-month-old Dean gets lots of Daddy time but also spends two mornings with Grammy. “He is full of laughs and is so yummy to snuggle with!” Both boys attend Waterworks Swim and love their pool time. The Arayas love their Carlsbad lives. 

FAMILY TIES BY DESIGN Kamali'i Peneku Volunteers for the Mary Seau CTE Foundation by LYDIA COBB | photo by Samantha Gleaton Photography

C

arlsbad is home for Kamali’i Peneku. She has lived here her whole life, outside of her college years in Durango, CO, where she obtained a B.A. in graphic design on a softball scholarship at Fort Lewis College. Today she’s the administrative assistant at Acutus Medical while simultaneously building her graphic design portfolio for brand communications. Talent is also a service, and Kamali’i gives back through visual communications for the Mary Seau CTE Foundation. Mary Seau is the sister of the late Chargers player, Junior Seau, who struggled with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). “The foundation is based off the experience and memory of the passing of the Seau family's beloved brother, son, uncle, and father, Junior Seau,” explained Kamali’i, who grew up with Mary’s kids along with the rest of the Seau family as close family friends. Mary invited Kamali’i to be the foundation’s creative and social media manager. The foundation was established early this year to raise funds for research on the long-term effects from repetitive head impacts. CTE is a progressive degenerative disease found in deceased athletes involved in contact sports, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. “What shocks me most is the amount of stories and how many people are out there who have experienced CTE,” reflected Kamali’i. The foundation is in place to enrich the lives of those affected, while working with a neuropathology team at Boston University to develop imaging for the presence of early CTE. Their first fundraiser is June 18 at Rookies Bar & Grill in Oceanside. This work is central to her love for family. Being at the beach growing up and playing family softball games carry her forward with positive bonds. “As with softball,” shared Kamali’i, “I grew up in a cultured world of dance and song.” Since the age of three she has enjoyed Polynesian dance in a group with her family and in high school. “It’s a part of me that will forever be there, it’s my culture and in my blood.” She was encouraged to follow her creative passions. “I’ve always loved to color, draw, and make things for people,” she added. “I think all my gifts I have given people are the ones that I’ve created.” It’s Kamali’i’s gift of service to lend her design expertise to a foundation at work improving quality of life. 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Building Community Roots

The Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative (CCGC), a 501(c)3 nonprofit which works to create a network of community gardens and garden-sharing resources, recently broke ground on the new Centella Street Community Garden with help from the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club. Approximately 50 volunteers helped build 28 10’x4’ boxes that will be used by the CCGC to transform the plot of land into a thriving garden. The Centella Street location will be the first community garden in the South Carlsbad area and has been in the works for nearly two and a half years. With a long waiting list for current public gardens located in Carlsbad, the new site has been a much-anticipated addition to the CCGC and is expected to be open by mid-to-late summer. For an annual fee, community members can select either a 10’x4’ or 10’x10’ in-ground plot to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The CCGC provides the initial box, soil, and access to water in addition to offering workshops from master gardeners. For more information on the CCGC or to get involved with future volunteer events for the garden visit www.carlsbadcommunitygardens.org or email centellastreetgarden@gmail.com.

Food vendors will also be present at the events, and attendees are welcome to bring refreshments from home. A free shuttle service will be available for concerts at Alga Norte, Poinsettia, and Calavera Hills Community Parks, and will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Ride share options are also available through Lyft and Uber. Local Artist Donates Work to Benefit BGCC

North County artist Roger Chandler created the signature art for Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship XXXVI. The annual event will be held on July 9 at Dog Beach in Del Mar, and helps raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC). Players and spectators will be able to bid on Roger’s painting. “Each year we select a different local artist to come up with a unique piece for the championship,” said co-founder John Manson. “We were thrilled that Roger volunteered to donate his time and talent.” Roger Chandler began his career as a technical illustrator at NASA, and has since become an award-winning artist and illustrator with artwork featured on magazine covers, national advertisements, editorial art, brochures, and billboards. “I like to think my paintings reflect the amazing adventures I’ve had, and convey that indescribable feeling of a beautiful sunset reflecting on a perfect wave on a perfect beach,” states Roger. “It was fun having a new project with a narrow focus to work on, and I am pleased to be a part of the elite group of artists who have created for this tournament.” For more information about the championship visit www.beachbocce.com or email events@bgccarlsbad.org.

Fitness and Fun The first professional outdoor pickleball courts in Carlsbad recently opened to the public. Hosted by St. Michael’s by-the-Sea, the grand opening included a dedication ceremony, an exhibition game with seven-time National and U.S. Open pickleball champion and Carlsbad local Alex Hamner, and an afternoon of free open play for attendees. The courts were made possible by a grant from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. Membership to the St. Michael’s Pickleball Association will also be open to the general public. Pickleball is a racquet sport which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Representatives from St. Michael’s shared, “Professionally built and maintained pickleball courts will provide an opportunity for healthy, wholesome fun that will further develop the character of Carlsbad Village as a place of progression, vitality, and vision.”

The Carlsbad Lifestyle & Fitness Festival will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pine Avenue Community Park. Free and open to the public, the event is held the day before the 35th Annual Carlsbad Triathlon and will feature a family fitness zone, nearly 50 vendor booths, and activities for everyone to enjoy. “We emphasize healthy lifestyles for people of all ages,” said Rachael Shay, special events supervisor for the City of Carlsbad. She added, “It’s a fun way for families to stay connected. Fitness doesn’t always have to be in a gym.” A $6 wristband is required to participate in some of the activities and can be purchased at the event. Art for a Cause

Carlsbad Causes for Community (C3) held their Spring Art Bash at the end of April in an effort to raise funds for their community programs and events such as the upcoming C3 Village Scavenger Hunt, Rocky Horror Picture Show screening, and Halloween in the Village. Eleven different local artists, including Gregory Dalmas, Sean Dominguez, Deb Ferraro, Laura Fran, Andrea J’Neene, Janet Kopald, Brian McQueen, Bryan Snyder, Michael Striler, and Gregg Visintainer, displayed their work, from paintings to photography, prints, jewelry, wood carvings, and murals. Each artist donated 50% of their sales to C3. Additional artwork can be viewed during the Village Art Walk on June 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information on C3 visit www.carlsbadcauses.org.

Get Ready for Red Shoe Day

San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Artwork Approved for Aviara Community Park

The Carlsbad City Council recently approved final design concepts for public artwork to be installed as part of the Aviara Park Improvement Project. Following a national call for artists, bronze sculptor Michael McLaughlin was selected to develop designs for park enhancements as part of the amphitheater addition to the park. A public art advisory panel made up of community members, arts professionals, design team representatives, Parks & Recreation Department and Cultural Arts Office staff, and Carlsbad Arts Commissioners selected McLaughlin and provided input on development of the final designs for this project. The artwork includes two five-foot tall bronze sculptures called “Myriad and Manzanita” and “California Quail and Cone,” and is estimated to be completed and installed in six to nine months. For more information about the project visit www.carlsbadca.gov.

Carlsbad Village Music Walk The Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) is now accepting applications for their Fall 2016 Youth Leadership Council, a group which seeks to help local students grow life skills through community service and leadership development opportunities. Members will plan and carry out activities and events in support of MTF’s mission of supporting families whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses, diseases, and disorders. In addition, members will have the opportunity to participate in a structured servant leadership development training program and host MTF’s Showcase event. Each student receives community service for all their participation in the program, and senior students receive special recognition in MTF’s annual Youth Leadership Showcase along with a certificate of distinguished service and a letter of recommendation. Membership is open to students in grades 7 through 12, and applications are being accepted now until Sept. 10. For more information and to download an application visit www.mitchellthorp.org.

The Carlsbad Music Festival will kick off the summer with its 4th Annual Village Music Walk on Saturday, June 18. Attendees will take a musical journey through the Village, where they will be able to enjoy performances by over 40 musicians at locations throughout the village. The free event will also feature a beer garden, food trucks, an artisan market, and a variety of activities for the whole family. Founder and Artistic Director Matt McBane said, “The Village Music Walk is one of the most fun and exciting events we produce. The whole Village is taken over with a really eclectic range of music and thousands of people turn out. The energy between the musicians and the audience is electric and each year several people tell me ‘this is the coolest thing I’ve seen happen in Carlsbad.’” To learn more visit www.carlsbadmusicfestival.org.

said, “Dr. Churchill is uncompromising in his quest for rigorous and relevant educational opportunities for all young people. Colleagues describe him as a trusted, collaborative, quietly confident, visionary leader. The board is confident that he will quickly earn

the respect and support of staff and community as the next superintendent of our extraordinary school system.” Dr. Churchill, his wife Nichole, and their two school-age daughters are planning to relocate to the Carlsbad area this summer. The board introduced Dr. Churchill to the community at its regularly scheduled meeting in mid-May and he will assume his new position on July 1. The family is thrilled to be joining the active community of parents and other committed stakeholders in the district. He said, “Carlsbad is an outstanding community with committed parents, excellent teachers and staff, and a tradition of excellence. It is my goal to lead Carlsbad from excellent to exceptional and to establish CUSD as a nationally recognized model for innovation and achievement.” To learn more about Dr. Churchill visit www.benjaminchurchill.com. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Pricing Mistakes Home Sellers Make W

e have met with countless home sellers to discuss the possibility of selling their homes. The most important part of the conversation is always pricing the home appropriately. This always depends on the reasons for selling. Are the sellers moving out of the area as a relocation? Are they downsizing or moving up? How long do they have to sell? According to Joseph Rand with Inman.com, there are several massive pricing mistakes sellers make. He says the #1 biggest mistake is trying to price your home based on the unsold homes and not the sold homes. You should be looking at the unsold homes as a reference for what needs to be done to beat those homes and get yours sold. Overvaluing amenities and improvements also causes pricing mistakes. Some of the items you feel are amazing amenities may not be of importance to the buyers. Sellers also need to remember that if you do an extensive kitchen remodel which cost $50,000, you will not get the full $50,000 of value when you sell. Finally, in the end the seller is

only going to get what the buyers are willing to pay. So be realistic and use the information your real estate agent provides you to make an educated decision. The most important part is starting off right with experienced agents. Call us! As 2015 Chairman’s Circle Platinum Award Winners, which places us in the top 1% of real estate agents nationwide, we are your first and only call for all of your real estate needs. ¢
