hard to flip through the pages of your 92009 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

Creek to Bay Cleanup
LOCAL VOLUNTEERS CONNECT WITH NATURE THROUGHOUT SAN DIEGO photos by Mayela Padilla
I
Love a Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 14th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew a wide array of environmentally minded volunteers to 110 sites around the county. Over 6,000 volunteers removed 150,000 pounds of litter from the San Diego landscape during the three-hour event. Over three quarters of the sites were focused on inland areas, including canyons, waterways, and street sweeps. Local cleanup sites included Frazee Beach, South Ponto Beach, and Carlsbad Tower 30. The event also marked the end of ILACSD’s Matching Funds Campaign, which started with a $25,000 donation from North
County residents Chuck and Gail Kendall. According to ILACSD, the aim was to match each additional donation in an effort to raise an additional $25,000 to connect 30,000 of San Diego’s youth to nature in a way that inspires them to help protect it for life. ILACSD was founded in 1954 as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee. Ever since then, the organization has grown
in scope and impact to become an influential advocate for local sustainability. ILACSD offers a number of educational and volunteer programs, including Keep America Beautiful, Clean Beach Coalition, Stormwater Outreach and Education Program, and Adopt-A-Beach Program. They offer regular beach and inland cleanup events. Learn more at www.cleansd.org. ¢

arlsbad resident Janelle Panther, founder of Pantherella Specialty Events, uses her skills in the event-planning industry to create one-of-a-kind fundraising extravaganzas for nonprofit organizations. Developing galas for such charities as Solutions for Change, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Moonlight Foundation, Just in Time, and Miracle Babies, Janelle creates opportunities for positive change. This German-born mother to two young children is grateful to have found the perfect profession that melds her joy of supporting worthy causes with her joy in throwing fabulous parties. Janelle began working for various small nonprofit organizations and soon realized many did not know how to maximize their fundraising efforts effectively. She explained, “I saw that there was a need for people who could put on quality fundraisers to support the nonprofits’ initiatives. These organizations weren’t getting the traction they needed from donors or vendors because their events weren’t well thought out or managed. Organizing these fundraisers made me fall in love with the idea of creating unique events to help give back.” Janelle has amassed an impressive contact base that assists her with planning and marketing fundraising parties. She exclaimed, "I love being able to get support for important causes that wouldn’t otherwise be able to have the same exposure.” One of the more challenging events Janelle oversaw was last year’s gala for Solutions for Change, a charity devoted to solving family homelessness. Themed “An Evening to Remember,” the fundraising reception needed to accommodate 800 guests! After an exhaustive search, Janelle finally happened upon Jet Source, which graciously donated its 40,000 square foot hangar. Janelle recalled, “The event itself took almost a year to plan, and four days of nonstop setup to transform the empty hangar into a dazzling reception and ballroom space.” Janelle also volunteers at her son’s school, watches local Polo matches, skis, studies Spanish, and mentors college students on the intricacies of event production. She is an avid cook, and admitted, “I try to make each meal unique and memorable, and I pour all my love into every step.” At home or at work, Janelle’s heartfelt devotion always produces wonderful results.

arco Berron is just finishing second grade at La Costa Meadows Elementary. “I like my teacher Mrs. Mone,” he said, “because she makes learning fun and easy, and is nice to me and my classmates.” He also likes his hometown of Carlsbad, all the parks and beaches, with Alga Norte Park as his favorite. “I go there with my family and we break into teams to play basketball and football.” He shared, “I also skateboard with my sisters.” Even though it’s not in Carlsbad, Marco’s favorite beach is Beacon's, with Ponto running a close second. “And Carlsbad Lagoon where my family and I paddle board and can take our dog Charley.” His best subjects are math and science. He likes math because he loves doing big addition problems. “I love science because I like doing science experiments,” he shared, “especially when we experiment with magnets.” His most favorite, though, is running. he Aukerman family has touched down. Before they moved here three years ago, they had lived in four states: Ohio, Kentucky, Colorado, and Florida. “We have had lots of visitors here because our friends and family in Ohio love the SoCal weather,” shared
Summer Aukerman, a former educator and full-time mom raising their boys, Cayden and Bryce, and volunteering in their classrooms. Craig Aukerman is the special teams coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. “We love to be active,” explained Summer. “We

enjoy walking along the coast, taking our riding bikes, hiking, and hanging out with friends.” When it comes to the Bolts, it’s an all-family affair. The Aukermans cherish family time at the team hotel the night before a Chargers’ home game. Summer continued, “Then it’s followed by a day of tailgating and hanging out on the football field before kickoff.” Their football-loving dad has tossed the ball back in time as his sons enjoy sports. Cayden enters third grade this fall. “He loves to read and spend time with his friends,” mentioned Summer, and Bryce will begin kindergarten. “He’s on the move at all times and loves to be outside.” The boys are involved in baseball, respectively by age group, with La Costa Youth Organization and Little Rookies T-Ball, soccer with LA Galaxy San Diego, and basketball with City of Carlsbad and YMCA. Craig and Summer both attended rural high schools in Ohio. Craig obtained an elementary education degree at University of Findlay, Ohio, and played in two national football championships. They met at Miami University, Ohio. Craig was a football grad assistant working on his master’s degree. Summer was completing her undergraduate in special education and played volleyball. Active in sports would mean an active life together, and giving back to what they love. Summer volunteers with The Chargers’ organization. They are members of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic. They also support the Ohio-based non-profit HAND (Helping Assistance for Neuromuscular Disorders) in honor of Summer’s mother, Chris Clouse, who passed away from Lou Gehrig’s (ALS) Disease. The scenery here is welcoming to the Aukermans. And they are grateful. “We love the size of the Carlsbad community and have made a lot of great friendships in the three years we have lived here,” added Summer. Family time huddle means everything to the Aukermans.

Why your child should be seen at age 7 by an Orthodontist Very often people think that orthodontics is only about straight teeth and great smiles. While that is very true, seeing children at age 7–9 can prevent or eliminate significant medical problems such as a restricted airway. These conditions cause the lower jaw to grow downward which then causes an "open bite." This condition is exhibited when the front teeth do not meet. How can you tell when there is an airway problem? Below is a list of symptoms and signs: • • • • • • • • • • •
Chronic open mouth position Gummy smile Swollen gums Chronic dark circles under the eyes A crease on the nose (about 1/3 of the way up from the tip) "Pouting" lower lip Short upper lip Narrow "V" shaped upper jaw Upper teeth in "bucked" position Chronic chapped or cracked lips Excessive snoring (caused by a small airway)
This lack of airway can lead to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) even in young children.

Other highlights included a fashion show curated by Lisa O’Hearn, clothing by cabi clothing, and makeup by Carol Fehr with Mary Kay cosmetics. Event sponsors included The Loftin Firm, P.C., Savvy Women Wealth Management, and WWM Financial. “Glamour, Glitz, Hats, & Heels provided a forum to encourage women to celebrate being women in business. We felt privileged to be a part of this forum,” said Sue Loftin, Businessperson of the Year Award recipient from the Carlsbad Chamber, and president of The Loftin Firm, P.C. “For the younger women on our staff who attended the event last year, the event provided inspiration for their options in the future.” For more information visit www.carlsbad.org.

The free outdoor concert series runs each Friday through Aug. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., at community parks across the city. Presented by the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office, the series features a mix of local bands and top touring artists, with music covering a wide range of genres. Food vendors will also be present at the events, and attendees are welcome to bring refreshments from home. A free shuttle service will be available for concerts at Alga Norte, Poinsettia, and Calavera Hills Community Parks, and will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Ride share options are also available through Lyft and Uber. For a complete concert schedule visit www.carlsbadca.gov/arts.
Local Artist Donates Work to Benefit BGCC
North County artist Roger Chandler created the signature art for Vigilucci’s Beach Bocce World Championship XXXVI. The annual event will be held on July 9 at Dog Beach in Del Mar, and helps raise funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad (BGCC). Players and spectators will be able to bid on Roger’s painting. “Each year we select a different local artist to come up with a unique piece for the championship,” said co-founder John Manson. “We were thrilled that Roger volunteered to donate his time and talent.” Roger Chandler began his career as a technical illustrator at NASA, and has since become an award-winning artist and illustrator with artwork featured on magazine covers, national advertisements, editorial art, brochures, and billboards. “I like to think my paintings reflect the amazing adventures I’ve had, and convey that indescribable feeling of a beautiful sunset reflecting on a perfect wave on a perfect beach,” states Roger. “It was fun having a new project with a narrow focus to work on, and I am pleased to be a part of the elite group of artists who have created for this tournament.” For more information about the championship visit www.beachbocce.com or email events@bgccarlsbad.org.
Fitness and Fun
San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. Young Writer’s Camp at Carrillo Elementary
Honoring Young Philanthropists
Carrillo Elementary will be hosting the 5th Annual Young Writer’s Camp from June 27 to July 1. The camp, sponsored by the San Marcos Writing Project at CSU San Marcos, invites students entering grades two through six to take part in a week-long workshop of writing led by Writing Project teachers. Registration fees include a notebook, t-shirt, writing materials, and all supplies necessary to create a writing portfolio. Wendy Fisher, who has been teaching and directing the camp for the past five years, shared, “Many of our students end up coming back multiple years. When students are given a choice about topics for writing, even reluctant writers find their voice.” This year’s camp will include three teachers, and author Kathleen Krull will return to share tips on writing for the second year. Registration is limited. For more information email Wendy at fisherwm@alumni.usc.edu.
Artwork Approved for Aviara Community Park
Youth Leadership Council
The San Diego Del Norte Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) – a philanthropic organization of mothers and daughters – recently honored 18 of their graduating members at the 26th Annual Senior Recognition Ceremony and Dinner Dance in La Jolla. Known as “Ticktockers” within NCL, the graduates have completed a six-year core program of community service, leadership development, and cultural activities. The young women are graduating from high schools across San Diego County, including Canyon Crest Academy, Cathedral Catholic High School, La Jolla Country Day School, Maranatha Christian Schools, Pacific Ridge School, Santa Fe Christian Schools, and Torrey Pines High School. For more information visit www.nclsandiegodelnorte.org.
The Carlsbad City Council recently approved final design concepts for public artwork to be installed as part of the Aviara Park Improvement Project. Following a national call for artists, bronze sculptor Michael McLaughlin was selected to develop designs for park enhancements as part of the amphitheater addition to the park. A public art advisory panel made up of community members, arts professionals, design team representatives, Parks & Recreation Department and Cultural Arts Office staff, and Carlsbad Arts Commissioners selected McLaughlin and provided input on development of the final designs for this project. The artwork includes two five-foot tall bronze sculptures called “Myriad and Manzanita” and “California Quail and Cone,” and is estimated to be completed and installed in six to nine months. For more information about the project visit www.carlsbadca.gov.
Carlsbad Village Music Walk
The Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) is now accepting applications for their Fall 2016 Youth Leadership Council, a group which seeks to help local students grow life skills through community service and leadership development opportunities. Members will plan and carry out activities and events in support of MTF’s mission of supporting families whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses, diseases, and disorders. In addition, members will have the opportunity to participate in a structured servant leadership development training program and host MTF’s Showcase event. Each student receives community service for all their participation in the program, and senior students receive special recognition in MTF’s annual Youth Leadership Showcase along with a certificate of distinguished service and a letter of recommendation. Membership is open to students in grades 7 through 12, and applications are being accepted now until Sept. 10. For more information and to download an application visit www.mitchellthorp.org.
The Carlsbad Music Festival will kick off the summer with its 4th Annual Village Music Walk on Saturday, June 18. Attendees will take a musical journey through the Village, where they will be able to enjoy performances by over 40 musicians at locations throughout the village. The free event will also feature a beer garden, food trucks, an artisan market, and a variety of activities for the whole family. Founder and Artistic Director Matt McBane said, “The Village Music Walk is one of the most fun and exciting events we produce. The whole Village is taken over with a really eclectic range of music and thousands of people turn out. The energy between the musicians and the audience is electric and each year several people tell me ‘this is the coolest thing I’ve seen happen in Carlsbad.’” To learn more visit www.carlsbadmusicfestival.org.

ighty-four-year-old Hal Forney is determined to continue helping others. Starting in 2015, he has participated in Tour de Cure San Diego, an annual 29-mile bike ride dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the American Diabetes Association. For Hal, the second oldest rider in the Tour de Cure San Diego, the quest for a cure for diabetes is close to his heart. “My family has a special connection with diabetes, with our grandson on dialysis and his mother and grandmother also diagnosed with the disease. We also have many friends here at La Costa Glen Retirement Community who are afflicted,” revealed Hal. He and his wife Elizabeth, who have been married for 61 years and have four children, 10 grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters, are happy to support such an important cause. Each year, Hal has ridden in the Tour with one of his daughters. He hopes to continue the tradition in 2017. When it comes to training for the Tour de Cure, Hal adds more cycling to his impressive weekly routine. “I do a lot of running and swimming and also work out in the gym at La Costa Glen. I ride two to three times per week, maybe a little more just before the Tour,” related Hal. In addition to keeping physically fit, Hal enjoys working in his vegetable and flower gardens and volunteering for the local Presbyterian church with Elizabeth. Hal is a retired orthopedic surgeon who practiced in San Diego for nearly 30 years and continues to play an active role in the local medical community. “I volunteer in an orthopedic clinic at UCSD for a half day per week as a teacher to medical students,” said Hal. During his career, he specialized in amputations and prosthetics and was in charge of the amputation program at the VA Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. Hal and Elizabeth have a long history of helping others, not only locally, but also overseas. “A major part of our life involved foreign travel, much of it for volunteer work. I have worked in Africa seven times, Armenia three times, and have been to Korea, Pakistan, Bosnia, Bhutan, and Kurdistan. I also served on two short tours on the hospital ship, USNS Mercy, in the southeast Asia region,” shared Hal. Although they no longer travel as they used to, Hal and Elizabeth are thrilled to continue their local volunteer work.

VOLUNTEERS BREAK GROUND ON CENTELLA STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN
T
he Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative (CCGC) recently broke ground on the new Centella Street Community Garden with help from the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary Club. Approximately 50 volunteers helped build 28 10’x4’ boxes that will be used by the CCGC to transform the plot of land into a thriving garden. Christine Vanderpool shared, “The At-Work Day with Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary was a perfect example of community volunteers coming together to make a difference.” The Centella Street location will be the
first community garden in the South Carlsbad area and has been in the works for nearly two and a half years. With a long waiting list for current public gardens located in Carlsbad, the new site has been a much-anticipated addition to the CCGC. The organization hopes to eventually have over 70 beds to serve the community. The projected opening date for the Centella Street Community Garden is mid-to-late summer. For an annual fee, community members can select either a 10’x4’ or 10’x10’ in-ground plot to grow their own fruits,

Gold Ribbon Schools
CUSD SCHOOLS RECEIVE HONORS FOR ACADEMIC STANDARDS
P
acific Rim, Hope, and Aviara Oaks Elementary Schools are among three Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) elementary schools selected to receive honors under the California Department of Education’s Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program. The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize schools that have made gains in implementing California’s new academic and performance standards. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, “These schools shine as bright beacons for others, putting forth an exemplary effort to ensure that every student is ready for 21st century college and careers. California teachers are developing an education model for the nation, training the students of today to be the problem-solvers, inventors, and pioneers of tomorrow.” Only 772 elementary schools throughout the state were selected out of the nearly 6,000 that were eligible to apply. The CUSD schools are three of only 29 schools in San Diego County to be honored this year. CUSD’s Gold Ribbon Schools were honored at a special ceremony in Anaheim in mid-May. “We are thrilled that these outstanding schools are being recognized,” said CUSD Superintendent Suzette Lovely. “Every day, in every classroom, our teachers strive to provide every student an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment. The instructional team – teachers, parents, administrators, and classified staff – are focused on fostering the skills our students need for success.” To learn more about CUSD schools visit www.carlsbadusd.k12.ca.us. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
How’s the Housing Market, Mike? S
ometimes less is more. This is truly the case for the current 92009 housing market. There are fewer homes available (or selling) than we’re used to seeing at this point in the year, and the ones with solid escrows are closing at higher median prices than in recent years past. This predictable trend occurs whenever
the supply of homes for sale in a desirable area remains tight. So, home sellers in our gorgeous slice of Carlsbad should continue to have their pick of offers if their home is properly prepped, priced and promoted. That strategy is easier described than followed during lower-inventory markets like this. Owners are sometimes tempted to “test the market” by overpricing their home, often aided by an overly eager agent who should definitely know better. To that end, current MLS
stats indicate that of the 373 listings posted so far this year in 92009, only 39% of them sold with their original pricing plan. Whereas 61% of those otherwise saleable listings dropped the price, expired, or relisted prior to eventually selling. Worst case, some listings end up canceling altogether after sitting for months. The message here is simple, yet critical – when it’s time to sell your home for more in less time, choose an agent with a proven plan beyond just getting a sign in your yard. ¢

THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us
OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the mission church, which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org
