Vol. 2, No. 9 TM

Publisher Derrick Breaux Creative Director Tyler McElhaney

About Last Night

T

Derrick Breaux Publisher

here’s nothing quite like a good party. It is often the end result of a lot of work and preparation. The reward. A gathering of friends, business associates, family, coworkers – many people coming together that share something in common. As I write this issue’s note, I find myself with a little extra hop in my step and a smile on my face. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that today is a Friday – and the end of a long and productive week. But what’s really on my mind is last night’s ZCode Magazines’ epic party! With the launch of our eleventh publication, 08/10 Magazine, covering the North Carlsbad zip codes of 92008 and 92010, we decided to make the official announcement with a grand celebration – ZCode style. And we felt that the iconic Carlsbad Flower Fields was the perfect venue – the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn made for a very cool setting. So why was last night’s party so great? Was it the fact that we were blessed to have over 300 guests ranging from local business owners, politicians, and school officials to friends and family members of the ZCode team? You bet it was! Last night was not only a night to celebrate the launch of 08/10 Magazine, but it was a celebration of community in general. You see, it is my belief that most of the people that live in North San Diego County live here by choice and not necessity. The vast majority of our neighbors are proud to live in their community. In fact, they love living in their community. It is this bond that makes everything work. It is this bond that makes each of the unique communities of North County so special. I am surrounded by an incredible group of people that make up the ZCode Team. Day in and day out they are in the office busting their butts and working hard to create magazines that we hope people want to read. Everyone has a unique part of the puzzle. It was an amazing experience to see our team mingling and socializing with many of the people that have either been featured in one of the ZCode Magazines or people that are loyal readers of the magazines. Having the ability for the team to connect faces with names, laugh and socialize make it all worth it. There are many moving parts to publishing hyper-local community magazines. First and foremost, it takes the vision, determination, and desire to produce a great product. For that, I would like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to the ZCode crew. Of equal importance is the loyalty of the local residents and advertisers – both of which ZCode Magazines would not exist without. We all need to thank them. So last night we celebrated. We celebrated you. We celebrated community. We celebrated family, friends, and coworkers. We celebrated being the best that we all can be. We celebrated an incredible journey that I like to call PASSION. I want to thank you for being a loyal reader. And thanks for supporting ZCode Magazines and supporting the advertisers that are responsible for delivering this magazine to your mailboxes.

ere at ZCode Media, our employees are like our family, and our magazines and readers are like family too. Carlsbad’s family of publications, including 92009 and 92011 Magazines, is now complete with the introduction of 08/10 Magazine. This past April, ZCode Media held a launch party for the new magazine at the Paul Ecke Jr. Family Barn amidst the picturesque Carlsbad Flower Fields. With the flowers in full bloom and the guests in full smiles, it was a night to remember. The packed house enjoyed delicious food, scrumptious desserts, and hot-ticket raffle items with over $14,000 in prizes. All $1,060 raised from the raffle went to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The night concluded with a few words from our co-owners, ZCode Media Publisher Derrick Breaux and Creative Director Tyler McElhaney, who premiered a riveting video on our newest addition to the ZCode bunch. Join us in welcoming our newest magazine to the family, 08/10 Magazine. 

he students at La Costa Canyon High School (LCC) have continued to make strives with their school’s publication, MavLife and their hard work has paid off. MavLife was recently awarded second place in the Newspaper Broadcast 13 – 16 Pages category at the 2014 National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association Spring National High School Journalism Convention at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The winners were announced by Diana Mitsu Klos, Executive Director of the National Scholastic Press Association and were judged based off of criteria such as coverage, writing, design, layout and photography. Suzi Van Steenbergen, MavLife Journalism Advisor expressed her excitement for the editorial staff, who have continued to perfect their writing craft and style over the years. “This was the highest we’ve placed at any convention thus far, so that was pretty cool!” she declared. She continued, “We’ve really improved our program in the last four years, so it’s great for the kids to get recognized for the journalism they’re doing.” MavLife has also been recognized with achievements in the past including the 2013 “Courage in Student Journalism Award”, fifth place for the 2013 “Sports Story of the Year Award”, as well as Best in Class – Two Page Spread, and Best in Class – Focus on School at the 2013 San Diego County Fair. njoying a brand new campus, small class sizes, and the opportunity to be “first” at just about everything is a unique experience for the 9 th graders at Carlsbad’s new Sage Creek High School. The opportunities of the situation have not passed by freshman and star student Bryce Buscher. “We are the first class at Sage Creek High with only 308 freshmen students. I decided to attend this high school so I could be a part of history and the first graduating class,” he said. He enjoys the close-knit community, as well as the school’s location and architecture. Bryce appreciates being able to set a precedent, especially on the sports teams. “It has been exciting to be on the first sports teams at Sage Creek and create a positive and up-beat culture,” Bryce shared.

The young athlete’s natural athleticism is evident in his growing trophy case. He has won titles in the Encinitas Little League, set the 100 meter track record at Aviara Middle School and was awarded the defensive MVP of the Sage Creek basketball team. “I am happiest when I am on a basketball court or baseball field,” Bryce admitted. His strengths, though, extend beyond the sports teams. Bryce began playing piano at the age of 5 and recently received a certificate of completion from the National Piano Guild.

Academically, Bryce’s record of straight A’s has yet to be broken. His favorite subject is Algebra 2. “I have always excelled in math. It just makes sense to me because I like things with a definitive process and answer,” Bryce explained. Bryce shares his home in Seaside Heights with dad, Bob, mom, Eddie, and younger brother, Preston. He enjoys living in the Carlsbad community for the safe environment, sunshine, and, of course, year round sports. Bryce looks forward to being part of the first graduating class from Sage Creek and the opportunities beyond, including a career as a lawyer and settling down with his future family. ¢

About the Recipe: As someone always on the go, it’s important for me to have food that is both healthy and convenient. Meals that use fresh ingredients but require “minimal stirring,” as my mother likes to say, are what I consider to be ideal. :::: FACES IN THE CROWD

DANIEL STEIN-KUBIN, AN ARTIST, LIFE COACH AND TRANSFORMING MEDITATION TEACHER by AMY LEHRER | photo by Soul of Photography

D

aniel Stein-Kubin led an adventurous, bohemian European life. He grew up in Benesov, Czechoslovakia before moving to Prague to work and study theology and philosophy. Long hair flowing, he listened to avant-garde music and frequented libraries, antique book stores, pubs and coffee houses. He traveled extensively and spent a year in Israel and a month in the Vatican. He played the drums for two bands and published poetry in Israel and Latvia. He then held various jobs in crematoriums, theatres, castles, gardens and glass factories before working for the Ministry of the Interior and for the Intelligence Service. He continuously studied on his own and was heavily influenced by philosophers, religions, psychiatrists, composers, authors and poets. He reminisced, “I remember a very important influence on me was Nietzsche’s works and how he expressed his philosophy poetically.” In Daniel’s current life, he combines all of his loves. He met his future wife in 1993, married in 1994 in Sacramento and relocated to Carlsbad in 2000 where they still live today. As a life coach and transforming meditation teacher, he draws from everything he has learned. Additionally, his art is an expression of his religious and life views. Originally drawn to art as a child and influenced by art studios throughout Europe, lately his art hobby has become his main interest. He explained, “Basic inspiration comes from daily observations and any life immersions. It goes to my subconscious mind and after my meditation, modes and forms are projected through me directly on the canvas from that Universal Oneness.” In May of 2004, he received the European Medal of Franz Kafka which is awarded annually to individuals regardless of national culture.

INSPIRED BY

ONENESS

He received the medal for his original expression and the fact that Franz Kafka’s work greatly impacted the philosophical concepts and style of his paintings. Daniel’s paintings can be viewed at two studios in Prague, at Art Studio Kubin at Aviara, and at 16904 Via De Santa Fe in Rancho Santa Fe. His artwork, meditation and coaching cause him to travel – another love – extensively in Europe and the United States. He currently has plans to spend a month in Sedona, AZ, a month in Paris and a week in Venice, Italy, his favorite place in the world. Daniel advises young artists, “Go on your own, experience life by yourself, be original, and don’t forget you are a perfect, original individual.” ¢ Name: Profession: Community: Hobbies/Interests: Favorite Local Spots:

CHS IS AWARDED AS ONE OF THE FINALISTS IN THE VANS SHOE CONTEST photos provided by Kelly Foulk

C

arlsbad High School (CHS) students recently participated in the Vans Custom Culture Shoes Contest, and out of 2,000 schools selected to enter shoes into the contest, they have been awarded as one of the top five finalists and the top school in the California district! The Vans Custom Culture Shoes Contest is a national high school shoe customization contest open to schools wishing to compete for a chance to win funding for their art programs. Registered schools take part in the competition by creating their own sneakers according to a specific theme. To participate in this year’s contest students had to design four pairs of Vans sneakers according to the themes provided: Art, Music, Action, Sports and Local Flavor. Drawing inspiration from the local Carlsbad beaches, surf culture, and art, the Carlsbad students’ shoes encompassed the vibe of CHS and the city of Carlsbad perfectly, with bright floral patterns, courageous surfers riding along waves, and sunsets glittering with vibrant colors. Only ten schools in California and only fifty schools nationwide were accepted into the semi-finals. After entering the semi-finals, a national vote took place where voters were given the chance to select their favorite shoes in five districts, the California Region, Southwest Region, Northwest Region, Southeast Region, and Southwest Region. For receiving the top award in these districts, representatives from CHS along with Rio Rancho High School, Parker High School, Eastern High School, and Cinnaminson High School have won a trip to New York City along with a $4,000 award for their art

programs. Vans will be flying twenty CHS students to New York City on June 9 for an exclusive final event where the grand prize winning school will receive a $50,000 prize for their art program and the chance for their shoes to be produced and sold in Vans retail stores. The four runner-up schools will also receive funding for their art programs. To view all of the schools’ sneakers or find out more information visit www.sites.vans.com/customculture. 

E.J. Collins IV and Jessica Collins Bennett Surwall and Charlie Collins Harbor Point since 2008 E.J. – Huntington Beach, CA; Jessica – Oceanside, CA E.J. – Global Director of Content Creation/Domestic Engineer; Jessica – Homemaker 16-month-old German Shepherd Legoland, Ponto Beach, the walkway near Grand Pacific Palisades (great sunset viewing), BJ’s and King’s Fish House

he Collins family is a minor-sized Brady Bunch. E.J. and Jessica Collins have two children from previous relationships: Bennett is 9 and Charlie is 6, but they look remarkably like biological siblings. “We say it was meant to be,” confirmed Jessica. Bennett is an excellent swimmer who can hold his breath

for a long time, and Charlie is involved in gymnastics. “She’s very strong,” mused Jessica, "and we think she’s got a future in competing one day.” The Collins family loves their location in Harbor Point, not just because it has such a relaxed and safe feeling (not to mention easy access to I-5), but because of the friendly families they’ve

come to know. E.J. is the global director of content creation at Billabong, and is self-educated in all areas of his career. Jessica used to work in marketing for an action sports apparel company, but now she explained, “I’ve been fortunate enough to be home for the last nine years caring for my family.” They have many interests, like family bike rides, camping locally, and pizza night where everybody makes their own. “The guys like fast and loud cars and they like talking about fast and loud cars . . . a lot,” laughed Jessica. “Us girls have taken a recent interest in gardening.” There is no lack of laughter in the Collins household. They take nighttime bike rides to let the dog (and the kids) burn energy, and E.J. frequently invents songs in the morning to get the kids moving and giggling. Pillow fights are a THERE IS highlight, often used for a job well done. Jessica and NO LACK OF E.J. met on a good old fashioned blind date. “My LAUGHTER IN sister called me and told me she’d met my future husband,” Jessica remembered. “She and another THE COLLINS girlfriend set up a BBQ, and the rest is history.” HOUSEHOLD. Some interesting tidbits about the Collins clan include that Jessica has nineteen first cousins, and E.J. is the fourth Edwin James in his family. A favorite story comes from last summer’s road trip: They stopped at Lake Shasta after a five hour drive in ninety degree weather, just ‘to dip their toes in.’ Slowly but surely they all (even the dog, Major,) ended up in the lake in their underwear. “I was certain we were going to get a ticket or arrested,” Jessica recalled, “but the risk was worth it and now it’s a great memory for our family.” ¢

s parents, one of our main goals is to make sure our children do well in school, and gain the necessary skills for continued successful learning throughout their lives. This can be a challenge for some, and that is where the Carlsbad-based Foundations for Reading & Learning (FRL) can help. Established eight years ago by Patricia “Trish” Padgett, a reading specialist/educational therapist for the past twenty-four years, FRL provides highquality, process-based instruction to students with various learning needs. “FRL goes beyond basic tutoring to train the underlying cognitive skills that support

academic tasks. We examine the student’s strengths and weaknesses, establish goals and priorities, and develop the best plan to meet those goals. We monitor progress regularly and make adjustments to the plan to maintain progress and momentum. We also work as a team with parents and teachers to bridge the processing skills to school,” Trish explained. Some students may need to work on reading and comprehension, while others need to focus more on spelling and math. There are also students with dyslexia, non-verbal learning disability, or autism. Trish maintained, “Some of our students do not have a diagnosis, but have difficulties in specific areas of processing

that are interfering with their development of reading, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, math, critical thinking and writing skills potential. Language is the foundation of all learning skills, so we use language to build processing skills.” Several multi-sensory, process-based programs are utilized by the staff at FRL, which include hands-on multi-sensory tools, computer technology and iPad apps to apply processing skills, microphones and sound technology to develop aspects of auditory processing, printed material to develop and apply visual-spatial processing, and even visual aids to learn and apply reading and

now takes over State Street from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Wednesday. With fresh fruit and produce, prepared foods and packaged goods, the market’s newest iteration is a welcome addition to the city of Carlsbad. Q&A

with Market Manager Ron

What is the history behind the State Street Farmers’ Market? The Carlsbad Village Association started the previous Village farmers’ market in 1994, which was located in a parking lot a block off State Street. Although well attended at first, through the years attendance dropped and farmers began pulling out of the market. In 2012, noticing the downward trend, Urban Place Consulting – consultants hired to help revitalize The Village – decided through a series of neighborhood meetings with residents and businesses that the best place to have a market was right in the middle of State Street with afternoon hours that made it easier for working people to attend. The old market was closed beginning June 2013, and the market in its current form, State Street Farmers’ Market, was opened at the end of June 2013. With this change of location came room for twice as many vendors, a better variety of produce and products, and visibility so that everyone visiting

Carlsbad Village on Wednesdays knows there’s a farmers’ market.

What is your role with the market? I am the market manager. I organize the event each week as well as deal with vendor recruitment and more.

Does the market partner up with any local organizations or businesses? The market has a sponsorship program, which includes a booth every week for any local organization or business that would like to promote something. We like to work very closely with the local businesses as it is a win for everybody to have people on the street. We also have a booth allocated for nonprofit groups and all local businesses and organizations can always have cards and/or flyers at the information table. We definitely like to help promote The Village and all its businesses.

How has the market evolved since its opening? We are quite fortunate to have more space than the previous market. We have a much wider selection of items, both produce and prepared and packaged foods. The State Street Farmers’ Market has evolved into one of the best markets in the county with under fifty vendors.

How many vendors does the market host? On any given day we have twenty-one farms and approximately thirty-five vendors selling prepared foods, packaged foods and a small crafter section.

What are your most popular vendors? Like any quality farmers’ market, the produce is what makes the market successful. However, other favorites include: Annel and Drew’s incredible marinated chicken and artichokes,

Vonda Lee’s Cheesecake in a Cup – you have to come see Vonda’s son selling cheesecakes in her apron – and Bitchin’ Sauce, all of which are made right here in Carlsbad. Also, Carlsbad’s own Valdivia farms has amazing local heirloom tomatoes when in season.

On any given week, about how many visitors attend the market? Each week we have about 1,500 to 2,000 visitors at our market.

What variety of items can be found at the market? Whatever is in season can be found here. In addition to the great produce you can also get fresh fish, sauces, marinades, granola, baked goods, spices, tamales, olive oils, pastas and more. We also have four cooked food booths so you can get a meal at the market and listen to live music.

How many farmers supply food to the market? Do all food vendors only carry organically grown produce/ cuisine? We have twenty-one farmers represented at the market, including five certified organic growers.

Tell us about the cost benefits of shopping at the State Street Farmers’ Market. The cost benefits are not what a farmers’ market is all about. What you do get from the farmers’ market is the freshest local produce that wasn’t picked until it was at the peak of ripeness. In most cases, what you are buying from the farmers’ market was picked that day or the day prior. This also means it had more time on the plant just like Mother Nature intended. Large grocery chains and bulk stores get produce that was picked before it was ripe so that they could pack and ship it. Another benefit of the farmers’ market is that you are meeting the folks that grow your food. They are happy to answer any questions you might have about their farm and their growing practices.

What sets the market apart from other markets in the area? What sets us apart from other markets in the area for starters is our location. We are in a beautiful city, right near the beach. In addition we are surrounded by restaurants and great boutiques. You could go shopping for everything you need and then sit on a street side patio, have a glass of wine and watch the market happen. You can’t do that at more than two or three farmers’ markets in the whole county. As I already mentioned I would put the variety found at our market up against any market in the county of the same size. We have about fifty vendors. Bigger is not always better.

What can one expect if they visit the market on any given Wednesday? They can expect fresh produce, a great selection of prepared foods, a relaxing neighborly atmosphere and amazing live music to enjoy.

What are the top four or five reasons one visits the market? The top five reasons to visit the market are also the things people can expect to see every week if they attend. Fresh, local produce, great prepared items, live music, people watching, and boutique store shopping as we are in the middle of the Carlsbad Village. There is the beautiful beach two blocks away as well.

How will the market change when the summer season begins? The only changes that we see in the summer are longer hours, 3 to 7 p.m. instead of 3 to 6 p.m., like winter hours. Also peaches, nectarines, blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes and cherries are all in peak season during the summer.

Please tell us about the surrounding area of the market. What else does State St. have to offer to visitors? State St. has a wide array of restaurants, bars and unique shopping. The market is located right in the middle of it all. You can buy your vegetables, shop for a new outfit, then sit and have a glass of wine or amazing dinner at one of the many restaurants. It’s truly a unique experience. 

Featuring a variety of local produce and products, visitors can not only get their food shopping done, they can also sit and enjoy the friendly atmosphere while listening to live music or browse through some of the local boutiques and have dinner at one of the many restaurants that line the street, all in the heart of the Carlsbad Village.

vailable to the public and open to musicians with diverse musical backgrounds, the Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk is the music festival for everyone. As Abby McKee, Managing Director of the Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk, stated, [the event is] “a veritable ‘choose your own adventure’ of concerts.” And this year’s event promises to be even more adventurous with over forty musicians and a couple thousand spectators expected. Carlsbad Celebrates Arbor Day

CARLSBAD MAINTAINS 10TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH TREE CITY USA STATUS

A

rbor Day is celebrated internationally as a special day where volunteers and businesses come together to raise awareness about trees and the environment and the responsibilities we have as humans to support the growth and maintenance of both. This year the Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department celebrated Arbor Day with over fifty community volunteers who came together to plant trees at Holiday Park. This year’s event marks Carlsbad’s tenth consecutive year as part of the Tree City USA program, “a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America.” Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. Volunteers witnessed a planting demonstration and listened to a speech about the vital role trees play in our communities. Businesses such as CAL FIRE, SDG&E, Davey Tree, Western Environmental Consultants, Nissho of California and West Coast Arborists held booths and tree maintenance displays. Participants were able to learn new ways to contribute to their community and socialize as well. “Arbor Day is a great opportunity to give back to the community and help the environment, while meeting new friends and neighbors,” said Kyle Lancaster, Parks Superintendent for the City of Carlsbad.

Additionally, the San Diego Japanese Friendship Garden Society donated three flowering cherry trees to the Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors and the City of Carlsbad for Arbor Week. Delegates from Futtsu, Japan, were honored by dedicating the flowering cherry trees during the ceremony. OTHER WAYS TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT The Shelter accepts donations of gently used men’s clothing, toiletries, towels and food. Volunteers can drive to local grocery stores on the weekends on a rotating basis to pick up donated bread.

athy Blecki returned to her Southern California roots upon retiring seventeen years ago. “I was a professor at San Jose State and my husband David worked in the electronic industry,” she explained. “When we visited my aunt in Carlsbad, we were impressed by the clean, well-run city-by-the-beach.” The beach was an hour’s drive from her childhood home in Los Angeles, so the five-minute jaunt she enjoys for a beach commute from her Carlsbad home is the bees knees. Professor Blecki continues to teach occasional classes, but volunteering is an important part of her life here. Through her work with a citizen’s group which was trying to find housing for Carlsbad migrant farmworkers, she discovered La Posada de Guadalupe. This men’s shelter for homeless men and migrant workers has been run by Catholic Charities since 1992. The buildings for the La Posada shelter were cramped, temporary, and twenty years old, and Cathy feels her biggest accomplishment for this organization is her work assisting in its rebuilding and renovation. La Posada previously had fifty beds with some emergency cots for the winter months, but the renovated shelter now has a farm worker wing with an additional fifty beds. Residents can stay up to three months, must be working or actively looking for work, and they take part in chores, meetings, and communal dining. They also have a case manager who works with each man to help him find work, stability and growth leading to self-sufficiency. Her appreciation of education and the education system helps Professor Cathy Blecki appreciate the mission of La Posada even more. In addition to food and shelter, they are actively researching how to best provide opportunities to the men to improve their situation and grow. ESL, computer skills classes, reading instruction and resume writing workshops are just some of the avenues La Posada hopes to implement in the near future. Dove Library, a walk on Batiquitos Lagoon, a Mainly Mozart concert in Carlsbad, and cooking with her husband rank as her favorite activities in Carlsbad (she worked as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant in college and makes a mean enchilada), but if Cathy Blecki could grant one wish to her friends at La Posada, “I hope that people watch for our Friendship Drive and join me in becoming ‘Friends of La Posada.’” That would also be a top rank on the list of Cathy’s Carlsbad favorites. ¢ Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Hobbies/Interests:

An Annual Coastal Celebration CARLSBAD TO CELEBRATE 7TH ANNUAL BEACH FEST photos provided by Mat Huff

T

he Carlsbad Beach Fest was founded to draw awareness to the importance of Carlsbad’s coastal resources through environmental efforts. The Fest’s mission is “to promote clean beaches, environmental stewardship, and public stewardship and outreach.” This year’s 7th Annual Carlsbad Beach Fest on June 14 will once again be hosted at Tamarack State Beach with lots of fun activities for kids and adults to take part in. The Fest continues to grow and improve each year, and according to Executive Director of Carlsbad Beach Fest, Mat Huff, is now recognized as one of Carlsbad’s most important events of the year. Mat recalled the first Beach Fest where about 250 people showed up. “It was a cloudy and cold day. I think we only had something like four or five pop-up canopies on the sand at Tamarack State Beach, and I was waving a sign and announcing (more like shouting) to everyone that passed by that the Carlsbad Beach Fest was taking place on the beach below.” The event was still successful however, due to the number of volunteers that signed up, the trash clean-ups that took place, and the educational outreach. The Fest has come a long way since that cold day in 2007. “The Carlsbad Beach Fest has grown in size and attendance every year. In 2013 there were an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 attendees. “We expect even more to attend this year,” noted Mat. Activities on this year’s agenda include educational booths, live music, Taiko drummers, professional sand sculpting, beach clean ups, an environmentally 5K and free one-mile kids fun run, community arts projects, WOW bubbles, a pro/am surf contest and more. Additional recycling efforts are being made including using multi-gallon water dispensers, FSC-certified biodegradable cups, reusable water bottles, and more. Some of this year’s partners include Surf Ride, Medics on the Ball, Swim Labs, Señor Grubby’s, Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Coastkeeper, I Love a Clean San Diego, San Marcos Veteran Center, Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, and Board and Brew. Beach Fest is in need of new volunteers and partners. If you are interested in helping out this year’s event or a future event visit www.carlsbadbeachfest.com. 

The full day of races starts at 7 a.m. and will finish in the evening. The 0.9 mile course, located on a platform above the Carlsbad Flower Fields with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, will host races throughout the day including a Carlsbad Family Fun Race. “Families will ride around the course as many times as they can in twenty minutes, and each member will receive a raffle ticket for each lap completed,” explained Fred Muir, Event Director. There will also be a kid’s race for the tykes too inexperienced to complete full laps on the track. Fred emphasized the central focus of the event: to provide an inclusive cycling race for all. “We will have a Challenged Athletes Race for the second year,” he said. He continued, “We also place extra emphasis on junior and women racers. These categories get short shifted in other races and we believe there is huge room for growth in both.” Spectators and participants will also be able to watch professional BMX riders compete, visit the health and fitness expo, and enjoy live music by the Museum of Making Music.

Carlsbad residents of all cycling abilities are encouraged to take part in the ride and learn more about the ways in which cycling contributes to a healthier lifestyle. STRAWBERRY SERENADE Sweet Fun in the Sun by JESSICA WOODS | photos by Tyler McElhaney

S

trawberry season is here! This beloved red fruit is a favorite among San Diegans, served on plates and in recipes new and old. But for every recipe, you’ll want fresh strawberries to serve, and it doesn’t get much “fresher” than handpicked strawberries straight from the field. This season, grab your friends and family and head to one of San Diego’s strawberry farms, where you can pick as many berries as your strawberry heart desires. Driving north on the I-5, it’s hard to miss the vast strawberry field nestled in the hills of Carlsbad off Cannon Rd. This is home to The Carlsbad Strawberry Company, who invite groups as small as a couple to as large as school groups and organizations to come pick strawberries for themselves. Venture into the field with your friends and family for a lovely summer getaway. With groups of fifteen or more, they recommend you call ahead at 760-603-9608 for more information. The fields are open Monday through Friday, and picking is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website for farm stand locations and directions at www.carlsbadstrawberrycompany.com. Out east in Temecula is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm, where their strawberries are grown hydroponically. There’s no need to worry about dirt or mud, as the strawberries are elevated above the ground to where even small children can reach. The farm is open Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can visit their website to keep up-to-date with crop conditions at www.temeculavalleystrawberryfarms.com. 

A RARE WWII AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCE FOR THE PUBLIC photos by The Collings Foundation

T

he Wings of Freedom Tour reached Carlsbad residents’ ears before the planes were even spotted. Four WWII bomber and fighter planes touched down at McClellan-Palomar Airport recently, leaving the community both awe-stricken and tenderly nostalgic with memories of the first major war to feature widespread bombing. The planes included a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, as well as a North American P-51 Mustang. The restored WWII planes are part of the Wings of Freedom Tour, the longest and most extensive running tour of its kind in the world. Sponsored by The Collings Foundation, the tour seeks to honor America’s WWII veterans, remembering the sacrifices they made, as well as educate America’s youth about one of the most destructive and horrific wars in the nation’s history. As Hunter Chaney, the director of marketing at the Collings Foundation revealed, “[We want to] engage, particularly the younger generations, in an unique experience that penetrates the very marrow – in

a way that both motivates one to want to learn more, and creates a better understanding of what it must have been like to be a WWII air crewman.” The public was given a rare opportunity to look inside and explore the aircraft imaging what it must have felt like to take control of a WWII bomber plane. The tour also offered people with the opportunity to take a flight aboard the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. Several WWII Vets were also in attendance, sharing stories and speaking about their experiences. The Collings Foundation is a nonprofit educational foundation with the goal of supporting and preserving historic events by encouraging the public to educate themselves about the past through participation. As Hunter put it, “It is up to all of us to remember the great sacrifices and tragedies that were made by our veterans and to encourage people to remember what happened over seventy years ago.” The Wings of Freedom Tour has taken flight and left Carlsbad for now, but the memories of WWII will remain in the hearts of the public for years to come. 

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Remodeling Your Home? Add Value With These Tips! by AL REX, CPA & Realtor

R

emodeling your home can be fun and exciting. If you’re going to invest the time, consider these areas to add value: Kitchen – New appliances, counter tops and cabinets all add significant value to a home. Stainless steel appliances are still the rage, and quartz counter tops have gained significant favor, although any stone counters with a designer backsplash will work. Totally new cabinets are popular among home buyers, but don’t count out a simple cabinet reface. For those who are budget conscious, a cherry or white lacquer paint over existing cabinets and new knobs will also enhance the look of a kitchen.

Bathroom – Upgrades to the bathrooms could include counter tops and cabinets, similar to kitchen upgrades. Another option are larger stone tiles with rounded edges, which can bring as much value as pure stone counter tops. If your shower/bath area looks dated, replace it with stone tiles and a frameless glass door or enclosure. If you can’t do a complete remodel, your bathroom will look up-to-date by just matching new faucets, light fixtures and towel bars. Flooring – Hardwood flooring is “all the rage” these days and enhances any carpet and tile. Wide plank flooring, with the “hand hewn” rustic look is the most popular, but any wood look will add significant value to your home. Tumbled travertine stone flooring is also popular, and a new item is tile planks that look like wood, but wear so much better. Putting in new carpet? Spend a few dollars more on upgrading your pad and it will feel like you’re walking on pillows. Paint – Earth tone colors have been popular for the last fifteen years and still remain the norm. If you’re going to enhance with a strong or bright color, try to keep it in the bathrooms or only in one bedroom. Now this doesn’t mean that you can’t paint your kitchen bright red and your family room optic blue, but when it comes time to sell, your realtor will be advising you to re-paint those rooms or it will impair your ability to sell.

Exterior – A fresh coat of exterior paint will add a “wow” factor to your home’s curb appeal! Colorful flowers, bushes and fresh mulch in the front will enhance the beauty of your home. Exterior hardscape to the back of the home will add value – but only about 30 to 50% of their cost. So if you want to put in that pool, do it to enjoy it and not to add value. 
