FROM THE PUBLISHER VO L . 8 , N O. 4 TM
Please Support Local Businesses
I
’ve published community magazines for 11 years. And my father has been in the publishing industry his entire life. As a junior in high school, I remember the night that the United States started bombing military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. I went with my dad after midnight down to the local newspaper where he worked. I literally watched him order the press to be stopped, scrap the originally planned cover story, and print a new cover page telling its readers that America Is At War! It was one of the first times that I began to realize how the media worked and the impact that it has in our society. I was proud to get a glimpse behind the curtain. While we didn’t have a “stop the press” moment here at ZCode once our state and local communities began being ordered to shut down all nonessential businesses and shelter-in-place, it has certainly turned our small business community upside down. As a business owner, one must prepare for slow times and potential economic downturns – it comes with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. However, a small business being prepared for all of its customers to vanish and immediately shut their business down is asking the impossible. How does one prepare for that? It’s never happened before. Although I understand that the shelter-in-place ordinance is necessary for the safety of everyone, my heart goes out to all of our advertising participants (that financially make this magazine possible) and other local community business owners. Most of them have shut down their business and made the difficult decision to furlough their employees – they didn’t have a choice. At this time, uncertainty as to when they will be allowed to open back up is the primary concern. Another concern is that when businesses are finally allowed to operate again, will the customers return fast enough to make it financially feasible to do so? One thing is for certain. We are all in this together. It’s going to take dedication and a willingness from the community to help small businesses get back on their feet. Businesses will need their customers back. It will take revenue for these businesses to be able to bring their employees back. WE CAN ALL HELP! If you are able to assist, I ask that you consider making a donation to local businesses that affect your life. Twenty dollars, 50 dollars, 100 dollars or more – it all adds up. Maybe it’s a local restaurant... Perhaps a local dentist or orthodontist... Consider your hair stylist, your child’s gym or dance studio, or even this magazine. Let the local businesses in your life know that you are there for them, appreciate them, and are willing to assist. We don’t know how the world will be after this crisis is over. But coming together as a community and supporting each other gives every business the best chance to land on their feet and continue providing the services and products that make our town so special. Stay healthy 92024 XXXXXreaders! readers!

Jake Sager Shares His Passion for Aviation With Fellow Students by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Soul of Photography
H
igh school senior Jake Sager developed a passion for aviation when he was 10 years old and downloaded a free demo for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. “In no time, I was flying jumbo jets online with other simulator pilots across the country. I was inspired to go to an aviation camp at Palomar Airport, and it was there that I went on my first discovery flight with an instructor. He even let me take the controls for a little once we were in the air,” revealed Jake. From that moment, Jake set a goal to begin flight lessons at 15 years old. He achieved that goal, and since that time, he has completed several solo flights. “I have flown by myself from Palomar to Riverside and back,” related Jake proudly. Jake shares his passion for aviation with fellow students at Pacific Ridge School as the leader of the Aviation Club. He works with the other students to give lessons on general ground school information that he learned in flight school, as well as taking the lead on flight simulators. “I also look for opportunities to take interactive field trips to places where we can further our learning,” he said. In addition to the Aviation Club, Jake participates on the academic team and is involved in the music program at Pacific Ridge School. He is currently the band leader of the Honors Jazz Rock Ensemble. “I use my ear to help the other musicians learn and improve on their parts, create basic musical arrangements, and critically listen to what we are playing to make adjustments,” said Jake. He also uses his musical and leadership talents to stage manage school musicals. Giving back to the community is also important to Jake, and he is the co-leader of a service learning group on the Pacific Ridge campus called Health Nut. The group visits local elementary Name: Jake Sager (18) schools and gives presentations on healthy eating, balance, and moderation. School: Pacific Ridge School Jake’s favorite subjects in school have consistently been math and Grade: 12 the sciences. In looking to the future, Jake is hoping to pursue the study of Parents: Linda and Aaron Sager engineering, computer science, or data science. “I’ve also given some thought Sibling: Ben (15) to aerospace engineering, as it nicely combines my interests in math and Hobbies & Interests: Music, aviation, programming science with my love of aviation,” he said. “I also plan to continue performing Favorite Spots in Beacon’s, Moonlight Beach, walkway music in college, as well as take classes in music theory and performance.” Encinitas: on the 101 between Swami’s and the When asked who or what inspires him, Jake quickly named his parents. Staying Connected
GIRL SCOUT TROOP 1420 GOES VIRTUAL
D
uring California’s stay-at-home order due the COVID-19 crisis, local Girl Scouts are finding ways to stay connected through virtual experiences. Girl Scout Troop 1420 of Encinitas has transitioned to a virtual meeting format, using the opportunity to get creative. During their first virtual meeting in April, the girls participated in a virtual scavenger hunt – the first person to find all 10 listed household items won. “It was fun because the girls were running around, sharing items, and staying engaged,” said troop leader Jenna Fasack. “It was a good break from the distance learning they had been doing for school.” They also took turns with a stuffed animal showand-tell, said the Girl Scout Promise and Law together, and concluded the meeting with a virtual version of the friendship circle. As a special project, the troop created notes of inspiration with artwork, which were delivered to a senior living community where many of the residents are isolated due to age. They also plan on using some of their cookie sale proceeds to host a family-oriented cookie party at the affordable housing community later this year.
“During times of crisis, you can count on Girl Scouts to make a plan, band together (while following social-distancing guidelines), develop innovative ways to stay connected, try new things, and discover new approaches to making the world a better place,” said Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich. “I am proud to see how our volunteers, girls, and staff are assisting each other.” For more information about Girl Scouts San Diego visit www.sdgirlscouts.org. ¢

STUDIO WEST T
he Recording Arts Center at Studio West is pleased to announce that the year-long Diploma in Recording Arts program has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA funds. This means that The Recording Arts Center can continue to proudly serve veterans with the added benefit of funding support for the program. While the lack of fund support has not stopped veterans from joining the Diploma program in the past, now the Studio is able to better support a wider range of vets in starting a career in the field of audio engineering. “The approval by the VA’s office is a wonderful benefit that we are extremely pleased to offer our veteran students,” Peter Dyson, owner of Studio West, said in a recent interview. “The Diploma in
Recording Arts imparts so much useful knowledge and skill building that it has been a great way for our graduates to start a new career. That we are now able to offer it to more veterans with the support of their VA funds is amazing.” With the majority of eligible graduates and alumni using their knowledge to pursue a career, the year-long Diploma program offers a solid foundation for audio engineers. Classes are held in a worldclass studio and offer participants the chance to get hands-on experience in a professional environment. To learn more about joining the
program, with or without VA funds, please contact Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admission, at todd@StudioWest.com or 858-592-9497. More information can also be found at www.StudioWest.com. ¢

HARBAUGH SEASIDE TRAILS OPEN TO ALL photos courtesy of Nature Collective
H
arbaugh Seaside Trails, the three-acre coastal overlook linking Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Solana Beach, is now officially open to the public and accessible for hiking, wildlife photography, dog walking, and peaceful contemplation in nature, following a special grand opening celebration in February. The trails feature a wave-shaped walking trail, spectacular ocean views from the shell-shaped observation deck, over 8,000 native plants that represent four Southern California coastal habitats, and the donor monument designed by artist Betsy Schulz with lagoon wildlife-themed mosaics, uniting the Coastal Rail Trail art theme. Once slated for development for many years, the land was secured by Nature Collective, made possible by a $1.15 million gift from The Harbaugh Foundation, and is now designated permanent open space, open daily from sunrise to sunset. “We saved these views together!”
said Doug Gibson, Nature Collective Executive Director. “Today we celebrate – and generations will cherish what we refused to lose for our collective love of nature and community.” Harbaugh Seaside Trails is named in honor of the late George and Betty Harbaugh, San Diego philanthropists who directed their estate planning to benefit nature and community. “It has been an honor and privilege to work with Nature Collective and our community to preserve this amazing property and to make it accessible now and for future generations,” said Harbaugh Foundation Director Joe Balla. Experience the natural beauty of the trails firsthand and help restore coastal habitats with I Love A Clean San Diego’s 18th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup on Saturday, June 20. COASTAL ROOTS FARM CONTINUES SERVING ENCINITAS AND BEYOND photos by Soul of Photography

oastal Roots Farm in Encinitas is continuing operations of its Food Distribution Program and the paywhat-you-can Farm Stand to support the community during the coronavirus crisis. The farm provides free weekly and monthly deliveries of fresh produce to low-income senior community members, Holocaust survivors, and military families in need in partnership with Jewish Family Service and Helping Hand Worldwide. In light of COVID-19, however, Coastal Roots Farm is taking extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of vulnerable program recipients. Produce is now prebagged at the farm and left at the doorsteps of Holocaust survivors and at Vista Community Clinic for distribution by their staff. The pay-what-you-can Farm Stand will remain open on Thursdays from 12 to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to
following regular food safety guidelines, Coastal Roots has added further safety measures throughout the harvest to distribution process. Farm Stand customers will also be asked to wait in their cars until directed to park and exit, and farm staff will be bagging food on behalf of the customer. Wait times may be longer than usual. 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative In early March, Junior League of San Diego’s 4th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative raised $5,795 and 10 bags of clothing to support foster youth. The donations are focused on youths transitioning out of the foster care system, helping them access resources to find jobs or further their education. The Little Black Dress Initiative is a social media-driven fundraising campaign. Junior League volunteers wore the same black dress from March 9 through 13 and shared the campaign on their social media channels, raising awareness about the local impact of poverty. Junior League of San Diego has raised more than $21,000 for local foster youth since 2017. “This is our fourth year of starting the conversation around this difficult topic, and I’m so proud of not only the statistical achievements of our efforts, but how far and wide the message has spread,” said Emily Green Lake, president of Junior League of San Diego. “With any initiative, the goal is to create a conversation around important issues and our team of volunteers has done a great job of bringing awareness to the poverty challenges in our community.” Learn more at www.jlsd.org.
RCHS Donates Supplies to Scripps Hospital With pet adoption services temporarily suspended at Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) in Encinitas, RCHS Veterinarian Dr. Julie Moews and the RCHS medical team evaluated veterinary needs and conducted an inventory of supplies. After determining that they had enough supplies to care for the needs of the dogs, cats, and rabbits at the shelter until the next shipment of supplies was scheduled to arrive, RCHS donated excess items to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Donations included surgical masks, face shields, extended length nitrile gloves, and medical gowns. “This is what it’s all about. Community, connections, and love, even while we have to stay apart and stay at home. Maybe even especially because we have to stay apart and stay at home,” said RCHS Medical Director Kathy Mohr Zerkle. “We love the medical practitioners of San Diego!” For more information, to make a donation, or to take part in the Virtual Pet Foster program, call 760-753-6413 or visit www.sdpets.org.

Thirty-one foursomes competed in the 18-hole shamble, with Tyler Brett, Mark Edelstein, Eric Iantoro, and Matthew Jenusaitis taking first place with 113. Following their round, golfers were able to watch the PGA tournament from a private tent on the 15th hole of the South Course. Chip-In-For-Kids has raised $2.1 million in net proceeds over the past 15 years. “Through our annual, partnered events like Chip-In-For-Kids, we have created shared traditions of support for all our local youth,” said BGCSD CEO Marineke Vandervort. “Partners like The Century Club of San Diego play a vital role in our ability to impact the over 6,700 members that we serve each year.” Learn more at www.bgcsandieguito.org.

alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions.

CodeREV Kids

ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science.
