What is the Special Ingredient?
W
atching each issue of this magazine come together is a very exciting thing for me. Regardless of the number of editorial meetings that we have, it is always fun to see the completed design in print. We feature local students, families, volunteers, businesses and other stories as they relate to our immediate community. We often talk about how there’s a little something for everyone inside of these pages – whether you are 4 years old or 104 years old. Many people often ask me about our community and what makes it a special place. It’s easy to run down the typical list – beautiful homes, high-ranking schools, nice people, close proximity to a lot of things, etc. We talk about these things all of the time. In fact, many of us moved to our community specifically for these things. But there’s something more. There seems to be a special ingredient that can be found in our great communities. I believe that special ingredient is volunteerism. I recently had a conversation with a friend discussing how volunteers have such a positive impact on our local town. In fact, he took it one step further and stated that our community is as nice as it is specifically because of the contribution and donation of time of local volunteers. The more I thought about it, the more I had to agree. There’s something special that happens when people donate their precious time Derrick Breaux for the greater good of the community. Volunteering comes in many Publisher forms. Some people are capable of donating great amounts of time and energy. Others have a more limited ability to donate time. The important ingredient is that contributions are in fact made – big or small. Regardless of the amount of individual time that a person can gift to the community, it’s hard to deny the huge difference that it makes. Whether you are running one of the communities’ nonprofit organizations, volunteering at local events, or simply picking up the occasional piece of litter left behind on the sidewalk, our communities are definitely better places because of the people that do it. Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Friendly Faces at the Local Salvation Army
C
inderella stories are often thought of as epic tales of heroism. But at the Poway Salvation Army Family Store, Manager Dameian Watkins, is one such Cinderella story that went from humble beginnings to giving back to the community. One of the aspects of the Salvation Army is its Adult Rehabilitation Program, which provides homeless or adults suffering with addiction, to turn their life around through counseling, therapy, and spiritual development. Dameian was one such participant in the program, back in 2002, after a history of addiction to alcohol and drugs. Dameian’s life took a turn for the better, going clean, getting married, and watching his four children grow up. Starting as a clerk, he worked his way through the ranks at the store, and became the Poway Salvation Army Store Manager in 2011. Dameian expressed that 92064 holds a special place in his heart. “I love to hear talk about the Titans (from Pop Warner to high school), there are some amazing children in Poway,” said Dameian. His favorite place to eat is Bongiorno’s New York Pizzeria, and his favorite place is the Salvation Army Family Store, of course. “The customers, employees and donors are amazing!” he said. Even the customers have experessed their joy when they come to the store. Dameian greets everyone with a smile, and sometimes you can hear him singing through the aisles.
Dameian encourages the Poway community to stop by, say “hi”, and drop off their donations. The center recycles clothing, furniture, and more, but also provides volunteer opportunities for court-appointed community service. You can find more information about the store, the Adult Rehabilitation Program, and what donations they accept at www.sandiego.satruck.org. ¢

Life Through A Camera Lense Gallery Photos by Nicole Espina
“
My City, Your City” is the Museum of Photographic Arts’ 8th annual Youth Exhibition that encouraged students to use photography and video to explore the theme of home and community. They had nearly 300 students enter their artwork and a jury panel select the final pieces for the exhibition. The panel of judges included City Council President and Interim Mayor, Todd Gloria, freelance photojournalist, Sam Hodgson, arts educator and Program Coordinator for the Art & Photography programs at UC San Diego Extension, Annika Nelson, and Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) Executive Director, Deborah Klochko. The final selections are on display at MOPA in Balboa Park through Feb. 2. Additionally, twenty-three works displayed on an iPad in the gallery are also on view at the Civic Center Branch of the Chula Vista Public Library. MOPA is grateful for exhibition support provided by Adobe Youth Voices. Of the many finalists, five hailed from the 92064 area: Marissa H. (Meadowbrook Middle School), Hugo J. (Meadowbrook Middle School), Eric R. (Poway High School), Stacy L. (Rancho Bernardo High School), and Devon M. (Meadowbrook Middle School). “I am so impressed each year by the quality, creativity, and sophistication of the artwork these students create,” said Lori
Sokolowski, Student and Teacher Programs Coordinator for MOPA. “There’s a lot of really powerful and personal stories told through these photographs and videos. It takes a lot of courage to share your artwork and have it judged.” The 2014 Youth Exhibition theme deals with family and the deadline to enter artwork is June 15. Visit www.mopa.org for more information. ¢

Penny Taylor Meet...
Poway Library’s Head Librarian Keeps Things Thriving
by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
P
enny Taylor has been head librarian of the Poway Library for the past two years. “My primary job is making sure everything runs well – that mostly involves coordinating staff but it also includes dealing with facility issues and customer service,” explained Penny. And that’s just a small part of her job. Penny plans programs, gets involved with the community, participates in speaking engagements (she has spoken to the Women’s Club, Rotary and Kiwanis), and makes sure she and her staff are up-to-date on library trends. “We all try to keep current with library trends and issues and to adapt our work to meet changing needs and interests,” she explained. And with City Council recently approving a remodel of the library set for next year, Penny couldn’t be more thrilled to be working in Poway. “I'm very excited about it,” she shared. “It is very gratifying to work in a community that appreciates and values its library.” Perhaps it’s the loyalty of the community members that encourage Penny and her staff to remain passionately committed to the Library and to its patrons. “The library staff is an energetic and enthusiastic group, so there are always lots of activities going on, both in the library and off-site,” she said. “All of us get out into the community in various ways – I attend City Council meetings as often as I can, which helps me keep in touch with Poway issues and concerns,” shared Penny. “Other librarians visit schools, preschools, and youth organizations.” The volunteers at the Library are equally passionate about seeing the Library succeed. “[The Friends of the Library] provide practically our entire budget for programs – more than $10,000 per year,” stated Penny. “They give an additional $10-20,000 each year for library materials including books, eBooks, DVDs magazines and newspapers. They do an amazing job and everyone who donates books to the Friends Bookstore help raise that money,” she added. “The Friends are the real library heroes.” Penny, who loves to read (of course!), spends her down time visiting museums and frequenting the Farmers Market at Old Poway Park. “One of the great things about Poway is that it has an identity,” she said of the community. “It is so easy for an area to be just one more Southern California suburb, but Poway has fostered and created a distinct neighborhood personality.” ¢ Name: Profession: Residence: City Where Employed: Hobbies: Favorite Local Spot:

An Avid

R
ebecca Waibel, an eleven-year-old sixth grader at Twin Peaks Middle School, is a bit like a modern-day Katniss Everdeen (the smart, physically-fit lead archer character from The Hunger Games trilogy). She has, in fact, achieved two medals for archery, one of which was a first-place win. When she’s not displaying her bow and arrow skills, Rebecca happily exerts all of her vigor into just about every other type of exercise out there. She admitted, “I have done common athletic things like running, hiking, and swimming; but I’ve also done some more adventurous things such as white water rafting, parasailing, rock climbing and

snorkeling.” It seems as if no adventure is off limits for this daring dynamo. In addition to her archery competitions, Rebecca has also participated in a triathlon at June Lake, raced at numerous running meets, and received four Presidential Fitness Awards as well as a National Fitness Award. She also enjoys walking the nature trails that are sprinkled throughout North County, and exclaimed, “I even like climbing the trees at my grandparents’ house.” When she isn’t pushing herself physically, Rebecca expresses herself musically. She currently plays the flute and sings. Rebecca revealed, “I have performed solos in choir, and I am also in a singing group at my church.” Her favorite musical accomplishment was being able to make an actual recording of herself in a music studio. Rebecca loves attending school “because all of my friends are there, and I like the teachers too.” She is especially fond of her math studies. “I really like math, and it has always been my best subject.” Rebecca has even won a Math Olympiad Award on top of all of her other awards. Perhaps the one award Rebecca is most proud of is her “Service Above Self” Award from the Regional Kiwanis Club. She said her future goal is to find a great job that can support her family, and she added, “I hope to make a difference to the people around me.” Discussing her role models, Rebecca stated, “My parents inspire me because they love each other and support me no matter what. Also, my grandparents inspire me because they are very intelligent and are always there for me.” This avid

n sunny San Diego, just because the holidays are over, doesn’t mean the magic of wintertime has gone away. In fact, there was snow and fun in abundance at the Winter Nights Festival in Poway Community Park this past January. Families enjoyed sledding on a man-made snow hill, roasted marshmallows and delicious s’mores, and their very own synthetic ice skating rink. And, with all the snow around, it was hard to resist a snowball fight or two. Vendors sold winter wares, lights and snowflakes glittered in the trees, and all the charm of a small mountain town was nestled right here in 92064. ¢

Poway Roots Run Deep for the Taylor Family by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

ason and Alicyn Taylor have resided in Poway for thirty plus years. The couple grew up in Poway and attended local schools. Alicyn, who moved a lot as a child, knows the district particularly well; she attended five schools in Poway Unified School District. Three years ago, the Taylor family moved into Poway Estates. “We love being here and running into old friends every time we go to the store!” exclaimed Alicyn. They also love their small, quiet cul-de-sac, their neighbors and the block parties. Jason shares his love of the Poway community as a realtor for the Coldwell Banker Rancho Bernardo office and through his company, TaylorMoves, helping families sell and buy homes in San Diego. Alicyn works as a CPA and vice president of finance for the Western Region of Balfour Beatty Construction. Today, the Taylor children, Hudson, 5, and Luke, 3, are being raised local, just like Alicyn and Jason. The

boys attend school at St. Michael’s and Country Montessori and love all the extracurricular activities in the community. “Our boys spend all their time in Poway, from swim lessons at Floaties to soccer at the North County Soccer Park and Poway Little League,” Alicyn shared. The Taylors take full advantage of the athletic opportunities in Poway. Alicyn and Jason rode in the 2013 Tour D’Poway, and Alicyn completed her first triathlon last year at the Tri Rock in San Diego. Hudson and Luke can be found playing basketball, soccer and golf. “They love sports, and we enjoy coaching their games and taking them on bike rides,” Alicyn said. With an active lifestyle, getting around town is an easy task for this family. “We usually walk or ride bikes to almost all of our weekend spots, from coffee, Farmers Market, the gym, to manicures and pedicures!” Alicyn shared. Not wandering far from Poway is an important choice for the Taylor family. “We make a point to support local businesses as well as volunteering for St. Michael’s School and supporting all of the school and sports fundraisers,” Alicyn stated. Living local in 92064 defines the Taylor family lifestyle. “It’s very special to live in a town like Poway, and it’s something we are always thankful for,” Alicyn acknowledged. ¢

PUSD Gift Matching
{Donations Made Easy
by JESSICA WOODS
R
esidents are always looking for ways to give back to their communities. In the Poway Unified School District (PUSD), there’s an easy way to donate to your local schools, and then maximize that donation through your employer: the Matching Gifts Program. Here’s how it works: let’s say you want to donate $500 to PUSD. The next step would be to visit www.matchinggifts.com/powayusd, and type in your employer in the search box. For example, if I worked at Business A, I would type in the name “Business A”. Once you find the company selection that you work for, click it, and it will lead you to a page with contact information and steps to have your company match that donation. What does that mean? It means that if you donate $500 to PUSD Foundation, or to an individual school, your employer may match that and also donate $500. Steve Hafner, founder and CEO of HEP Development, said, “We frequently receive updates

from clients on how their matching gift campaigns are going. We were elated to hear from a couple of clients who didn’t do just a double but, yes, tripled and quadrupled their matching gift revenues.” The Gift Matching program is not confined to a particular season, but runs year-round. Some businesses will allow retirees and spouses of employees to donate and gift match. Either way, you and your employer are helping to benefit local schools throughout PUSD. Some of the participating businesses include: Abbott Laboratories, Apple, AT&T, Bank of America, BAE Systems, Hewlett Packard, Nokia, Northrup Grumman Corporations, Pfizer, Qualcomm, Sony Electronics Inc., Takeda San Diego, and more. To learn more about making a donation to the PUSD Foundation or to donate classroom supplies for a particular school, program, or teacher, please visit www.pusdfoundation.org and get started giving back.

It also happens to be the seventyfifth anniversary of Little League in America this year, and the sport is PNLL. Photo courtesy of PNLL. still going strong. In 1938, Carl E. Stotz, from Williamsport, PA, was playing backyard baseball with his nephews when he had the idea to give those boys the opportunity to play an organized game of baseball on a field that was sized for them, with equipment that was built for them, and against their peers. Thus, the first Little League was born. On March 1, head out and celebrate this timeless tradition with the young baseball players of 92064. PNLL Opening Ceremony will take place at PNLL major fields near Pomerado Elementary School. PALL Opening Ceremony will take place at the Majors field, behind Tierra Bonita Elementary School.
A Night at the Theatre
PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, is gearing up for a new season of fabulous shows for this year. “Don’t Dress for Dinner” will continue performances through Feb. 16. This comedy is a whirlwind romp in the French countryside, a story of mistaken identities and secret beyond secrets. On Feb. 9, “Love Letters” will be premiering on the stage for one night only. “Love Letters” is the star-crossed story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardener, childhood friends who kept in touch through letters and postcards. Through university schooling, war, and frayed families, these two friends stayed in contact, until one of them meets an untimely end. March 14 through April 13, PowPAC presents “Becky’s New Car”. Becky, a middle-aged woman stuck in a middling marriage, car dealership worker, has an unexpected encounter with a grief-stricken millionaire who stumbles into the dealership. Becky is offered nothing short of a new life, and we ride shotgun with her through it all. See our Community Calendar in this issue for showtimes and ticket information.
Donate to the Nancarrow Healing Garden
Long time San Diego news anchor, Loren Nancarrow, passed away on Dec. 28 after a ten-month battle with brain cancer. They have raised $108,000 out of the $500,000 needed to re-name the Healing Garden. There will be two benefit concerts to raise money: Feb. 9 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach and Feb. 21 at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. t Country Montessori School (CMS), the mission is to provide traditional Montessori education to children in the community while fostering independent, academically prepared and socially responsible citizens of the world. “A group of dedicated parents and teachers opened CMS in 1989 after identifying a gap in the existing educational opportunities offered to local families. We are dedicated to developing life-long learners who have the ability to ask questions, identify and explore resources and seek answers,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. According to Ms. Corrales, CMS is the only local Montessori school that has offered preschool through fifth grade for the past twenty-four years, and all teachers are certified and trained through the American Montessori Society (AMS). As a full-member AMS school, Country Montessori incorporates innovative approaches and integrates technology with authentic Montessori curriculum.
“
There are two to four credentialed teachers in each classroom. This allows students to draw from the strengths of multiple teachers and gives the teachers an opportunity to create a more comprehensive analysis of each child’s educational growth.” ~Ms. Corrales, Country Montessori School
Creating a warm, nurturing and welcoming environment is extremely important at CMS, as is open and direct communication with parents. As stated by Ms. Corrales, smaller class sizes and low teacher/ student ratios allow for students to receive individualized attention. CMS uses a teamteaching approach in both the preschool and elementary programs. “There are two to four credentialed teachers in each classroom. This allows students to draw from the strengths of multiple teachers and gives the teachers an opportunity to create a more comprehensive analysis of each child’s Ms. Corrales. institution that is committed to making a difference in the local and global community. “CMS students conduct monthly visits to the Sunshine Care Assisted Living Home and participate in a variety of activities with the senior community. We also partner with an underprivileged school in Honduras, raising funds to purchase much needed supplies,” related Ms. Corrales. Their January Recycle Rally also sends proceeds to the school in Honduras, and CMS students can also participate in a Spanish internet pen pal program. They communicate with and learn from the very students they helped. CMS is most excited about the newest addition to their school: the construction of a new building, featuring three elementary classrooms, a reading room, and an outdoor work space for the students. The old ranch house, built in 1957 and served as the original school building, has been demolished, but the stones will now serve as markers for the children’s gardens. What is the history of Poway City Council? Prior to 1980, Poway was an unincorporated area of the County of San Diego. With a push by a number of residents that desired more ‘local control’, Poway became an official City on Dec. 1, 1980.The City is comprised of five members that are elected by the citizens of Poway to serve for four-year terms. The mayor has been directly elected since 1990. The City Council is accountable to all Poway residents for all services provided by the city and oversees the expenditure of all City funds. The City Council appoints the city manager and city attorney.

What are your responsibilities as Deputy Mayor? When the mayor is unable to be at a Council meeting, I will step in for him. In addition, I am responsible for the Pledge of Allegiance at our council meeting. So if you want to recognize a Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop, or a sports teams or a volunteer organization, then give me a call and we will arrange for you to lead the Pledge at a City Council meeting.
What is your personal history before becoming involved with the City Council? Early on as we were raising our children we were involved with our City, but mostly with sports and our schools. As our children grew, our involvement grew to citywide issues, mostly in South Poway. I began to voice my concerns at our city council meeting and through letters to the editors in our local paper. When the recall and special election came up in 2010, many of my friends urged me to throw my hat in the ring. After discussing this with my family, I filed my paperwork to run for that seat. I lost that election, but came in fourth out of eight candidates. This spurred
Poway. I have enjoyed working with the City Council and our citizens and will run for mayor in 2014 with the desire and hope that I can continue to represent Poway and our residents to the best of my ability.

me on to run in the general election in November of that year. I went all out in my effort to get elected, and I didn’t want to lose because I hadn’t given it my all. With the help of my family and some very close friends and a whole lot of shoe leather, I was fortunate to come in as one of the top two vote getters and was elected to the City Council. Q&A
with Councilman Jim Cunningham
What are your primary responsibilities as a member of the city council? A council member is first and foremost the voice of the community charged with the responsibility to listen, study, recommend, empathize, and ensure they are truly “hearing” and understanding what the current opinions and issues the community is interested in or concerned about. Then they take the citizen’s ideas or concerns and determine how and if the City can help, facilitate, or address the citizen’s ideas or concerns. Then finally get it done within a reasonable time. The Poway City council is also the policy-making body for the city. The council is responsible for making decisions about which direction the city is going, how the City will spend its money, what projects the City will work on, and how to protect and improve the citizen’s quality of life. Making policy is an ongoing activity that develops when the council adopts ordinances revises or adopts the general plan and considers the ranking of projects in a capital

What is your personal history before becoming involved with the City Council? My wife Susie and I moved to Poway in 1976. That was thirty-seven years and three children ago. What are your primary responsibilities as a member of the City Council? I consider my primary responsibility to be connecting the citizens to the Council and the City. ilates and physical therapy are certainly not new ideas in the world of health and wellness, but combine the two and a program focused on exercise, rehabilitation, and wellness takes shape. Welcome to Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy. The studio, which opened in Scripps Ranch in May 2013, marries an exercise program with a rehabilitation and therapeutic program, resulting in a holistic approach to healing, health, and fitness. “This unique blend of specialties allows us to provide a more total-body approach to a client’s physical therapy,” explained studio owner, Sharon Manzuk. The idea for Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy was first born when Sharon could not find relief from her chronic back pain. A physical therapist herself, Sharon thought she was doing the correct exercises. But it was not until she began Pilates that she finally found relief. At this point, Sharon decided to expand her physical therapy background by studying Pilates. Today, a certified PMA Pilates instructor, Sharon shares her experience and expertise with others at Pukka Pilates & Physical Therapy.

or all you golf enthusiasts out there, GolfTEC San Diego may be just the place for you to improve your game. “GolfTEC has a proven track record with a 95% success rate, and nationwide we give 25% of all private lessons taught. No one else can say that!” exclaimed owner of the San Diego franchise, Suzanne LaTour. From custom club fittings, to virtual playing lessons, to a patented technology that compares your swing to those of professional players, GolfTEC offers not only a lesson in golf, but an experience, as well. “GolfTEC itself was started in Denver, in 1995, by co-founders and PGA Professionals Joe Assell and Mike Clinton,” stated LaTour. “Creating a consistent, well-documented golf instruction approach was at the heart of their new-to-the-world business concept. They set out to revolutionize the golf improvement industry and many would agree they’ve done just that.” While Suzanne – who is in her twenty-first year in the financial services industry – was researching various franchises to diversify for future retirement plans, she signed up to take lessons at GolfTEC. “Three lessons into my plan, I overheard that the store was for sale and called Denver to get more information,” she said. “I thought ‘Perfect. I love golf – I should buy this,’ and I ended up buying the entire San Diego Region with a plan to build out four Centers!”
It’s been almost four years, and GolfTEC now has expanded to two San Diego locations – one in Golden Triangle in La Jolla, and the other in Rancho Bernardo. “GolfTECs are fun, welcoming environments,” stated LaTour. “All of our team love what they do – they love to teach and they are passionate about the game of golf!” GolfTEC’s basic philosophy: “to make people better golfers and do it with an organized

Carol Wigent is Devoted to Helping Seniors by LINDA FRABL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
P
erky community volunteer Carol Wigent has been living in Carmel Mountain Ranch for the past twenty-three years, and proclaimed, “I love the accessibility to so many services, stores and restaurants, along with the easy access to the city. The surroundings are beautiful, and it’s people friendly!” It sounds like the perfect environment for someone who, when describing herself, admitted, “I am an energetic, busy person who is very social and loves people.” A retired teacher and social worker, Carol now spends the bulk of her days happily volunteering at the Poway Senior Center. Describing her tasks at the Senior Center, Carol exclaimed, “I assist with helping the Center to run smoothly, and more importantly, I help the seniors feel welcome and comfortable.” Through her association with the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch of the American Association of University Women, Carol also recently collected items needed by the Senior Center. Carol elaborated, “The Center’s wish list included a ping-pong table, bingo equipment and a video monitor with a sound system.” In addition to her involvement with the Senior Center and the American Association of University Women, Carol also occasionally volunteers at the Escondido Humane Society, which prompted her interest in pet sitting. She also meets regularly with a local book group, and tries to attend as many theatrical productions as possible, especially at the Old Globe. To unwind, Carol rides her bike or strolls around Old Poway Park, Lake Poway or Lake Miramar, shops at the Poway Farmers Market and plans fun gatherings with her core group of good friends. As surprising as it may sound, this social butterfly also relishes some tranquility. Carol revealed, “I crave my quiet time, and one of my favorite spots for that quiet time is in the mountain town of Idyllwild.” She also adores visiting her local family members, including her sister who lives in the area, and several nieces and nephews who live in Los Angeles. But overall, Carol is devoted to helping seniors. She emphasized, “The Senior Center always needs volunteers, so if you’re interested, please call the Center and ask how you can help.” If you do, you’re sure to meet Carol, and be forever affected by her endearing, caring thoughtfulness. ¢ Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Hobbies:

Future Farmers of America
Have Your Hugged Your Future Farmer Today?
D
id you know that Poway High School (PHS) is the only school in the district that has an FFA Club? FFA stands for Future Farmers of America, and helps students get their hands dirty (in a good way!) caring for farm animals, competing in judging competitions and public speaking. With a strong animal presence in 92064, it’s no surprise that these students are stepping up as the next generation of animal caretakers and awareness advocates. Members of FFA can raise animals for the county fair, choosing from pigs, sheep, goats, beef cattle, chickens, and turkeys. The Poway FFA has three different judging teams: horse, small engines, and veterinary science. At their last competition, the horse judging team composed of Sarah Contreras, Sarah Robertson, and Loha Leonui, and they placed first. The alternate team placed fifth overall, with a team made up of Madison Franklin, Keanna Reddish, and Ayla Peterson. The small engines team composed of Garrett Barton, Austin Okeson, and Evan Cribb got second overall. Their newest veterinary science team was made up of Nacara Akins, Allyson Kusuda, Katie Mandrusiak, Madison Davis, and Hannah Jones, and they placed ninth overall for their first time. PHS also has a week completely dedicated to the club once a year, called FFA Week. FFA holds a number of activities on campus that allow students to become familiar with the organization: petting

zoos, informational tables, and events like hay bucking. At the end of the week, the group holds the Kiss a Pig competition. Adrianna Chabot, the FFA secretary, said, “Throughout the week, several teachers collect money from students. The teacher with the most money at the end of the week gets to kiss a pig. One year it was a piglet, another year the club used a 500 pound sow. It’s always a fun event!” This is FFA’s fortieth year in existence and students hope it’s around for many more. ¢

Up for the Challenge
O
dyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem solving competition for students from kindergarten through grade 12. Teams of seven kids form in November each year, and work together over the next few months to solve a problem. They aren’t allowed any outside parental assistance, which creates a bigger challenge for the team as well as a better bonding experience. Through solving the problem and presenting their solution, Odyssey of the Mind teaches skills that they can draw upon, including: creativity, teamwork, self-confidence, public speaking, and “thinking on their feet”. This year, the two teams (made up of a mix of Poway and Scripps Ranch students) are well into their projects, with competition beginning in March. And what’s the “problem” this year?
Problem 5: “It’s How You Look at It” The problem is to create and present an original humorous performance that includes two characters that act naturally – to them – but odd to those around them. One scene will establish the “normal” behavior of one character that, at some point in the performance, finds itself among others who react to the out-of-place behavior. The other character’s behavior will stand out too, but this character will end up in a setting where its odd behavior is considered normal. The performance will also include a meter that indicates the degree of odd/normal behavior and a creative scene change.
Division 1 (2nd to 5th grade)
Claire, David, Lana, Lola, Macy, Nathalie, Shreya The Division 1 team created a giant mouth that had to decide if it liked candy or vegetables better.
Division 2
(6th to 8th grade)
Anika, Ari, Janelle, Olivia, Sara, Shruti, Zoey The Division 2 team created a giant brain that belonged to a teenage girl, and her emotions helped her gain the self-confidence to be herself.
Congratulations to both teams for their creative solutions, and good luck in competition this spring. ¢ 54 • 92064Magazine.com • February | March 2014

I read a lot from other experts about their opinions and predictions of the housing market, but I keep in mind that many of these experts were the same people that missed the housing market collapse, as well as the recovery. Others make so many predictions eventually some are bound to be proven correct. Below are some of the findings that may be more relevant, again all provided

remain so low. • Interest rates will slowly rise throughout the year. Historically there is no correlation between gradual rising interest rates and a decline in housing prices • The economy will continue to slowly improve. • Housing prices will remain relatively stable (many economist predict 2 – 4% appreciation.) • A trend toward single level living will continue to grow, putting premiums on such homes.
