Prom... Already?

I

must have been in denial. How could my daughter be old enough to go to prom? Where did the time go? I’m pretty sure that my wife and I were walking her into her first day of kindergarten class a couple of years ago. Apparently all of this sort of snuck up on me. How is it possible to have your oldest child go from diapers, to learning how to ride a bike, to having their first slumber party, to going to their prom – all in a few years? Well, that’s certainly how fast it seems that time has gone by in our household! To say that seeing our beautiful daughter all dressed up, smiling and laughing with her longtime friends and their dates, taking pictures, and getting ready to go to their prom had an impact on my wife and I would be an incredible understatement. As it turns out, I believe it was just as much of a coming of age moment for us as it was for our daughter. How in the heck did time go by so fast? Sure, I knew that it was coming. Our daughter’s date did a great job when he asked her to prom (I guess the process of asking someone to prom is a much bigger ordeal than it used to be in my day). My wife and daughter had spent several weeks searching for dresses and preparing for the event. I participated and offered my opinion when they would let me.

Then, out of nowhere, via text message from my wife and daughter, I received “the” photo of the dress that they were about to purchase. She looked beautiful. She looked all grown up. With mixed emotions, I reluctantly texted my approval. Reality check! Doesn’t this mean that I’m getting old too? How in the world did this happen? My wife and I had the privilege of joining a bunch of other parents to take photos of our kids and their prom dates before they all left for the event. We visited with parents that we have known for years. We saw many familiar faces of kids – all dressed to impress – that we have known since early elementary school. There were hugs. There were smiles. There was even an occasional tear as we all looked on and participated – often reflecting back to our own high school years. After seeing the group of kids leave for the evening, my wife and I began our short drive back to our house. We had both realized that our little family that we have nurtured over the years was growing up. As a parent, we know that this is inevitable. We just didn’t expect it to happen quite so fast. The Poway High Foundation Hosts its 2nd Annual Hall of Fame

P

by JACKIE WIBOWO | photos courtesy of Paul Faucher

rincipal Scott Fisher announced his desire to create the Poway High School Hall of Fame last year during the school’s 50th anniversary. He hoped to honor the school’s history as well as its distinguished alumni. Beginning with a pasta dinner catered by Café Merlot, the 2nd annual ceremony held at Bernardo Winery, featured a raffle as well as entertainment from Poway High School’s very own Jazz Band. This year’s inductees include former Miss America Kellye Cash, Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, florist and volunteer Jeannie Hume, and artist Marie Chiment. Best known for her reign as Miss America 1987, Kellye Cash (Class of 1983) serves the community as a musician and a fitness instructor. In addition, she has served twice on the Tennessee Republican State Executive Committee and has taken professional roles in theater. As of today she has recorded six CDs as a Christian/Country artist. Talent seems to run in the family, as Kellye is the niece of country legend singer, Johnny Cash. Assemblyman Brian Maienschein’s (Class of 1987) political career began on Titan grounds where he served as student body president. Brian has served two terms on the San Diego City Council, preserving over 11,000 acres in the San Pasqual Valley from development and securing the opening of State Route 56 during his tenure. Brian also served as San Diego’s first commissioner on homelessness and his program received a Golden Watchdog Award from the San Diego County Taxpayers’ Association. Looking for an “Easy A” her senior year, Jeannie Hume (Class of 1973) took a floriculture class which revealed her passion for agriculture. In 1984 she opened Crystal Gardens Florist, and she has been recognized as 92064’s best florist on numerous occasions. She served as president of the Soroptimist International of Poway in 1999, a women’s organization focused

12 • 92064Magazine.com • August | September 2013

on providing transitional housing for battered women and their children. Today, Jeannie continues to serve on the Poway Chamber of Commerce and volunteers at her church. An accomplished artist, Marie Chiment (Class of 1972) uses her talents designing sets and creating costumes for various opera, theatre and dance productions across the world. She is the recipient of the Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Costume Design for the world premiere of the musical ACE. Marie currently serves as department chair of the School of Communication and Theater at Temple University. Despite their vast differences, these individuals all share a home – Poway High School, where their dreams first began. Stoneridge resident for 17 years, Ginger Couvrette devotes herself to others. After graduating from UCSD, she became a science teacher at San Marcos High School where she coached four sports but chose to retire after having children. Then, because she enjoyed active parenting, she gravitated toward youth-oriented volunteer opportunities – Poway Youth Soccer League administrator, soccer and basketball coach, room parent, supporter of Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family and City Councilmember Jim Cunningham’s appointee to the City of Poway’s Parks and Recreation Committee. Despite now working full-time as a broker associate with Coldwell Banker, Ginger continues to support her community. She organized the first Summer Camp and Youth League Expo and is spearheading Hike, Bike and Ride Poway (HBRP) with Jim Cunningham. To help parents find fun summer activities for their children, she gathered 28 youth organizations together to present their programs. Ginger explained, “It takes a lot of time and work to find activities; so, having them all under one roof is a huge benefit to Poway families.” The HBRP program will highlight various trails and sponsor events. An only child, Ginger loves seeing her kids playing together and supporting each other. Married for 19 blissful years, Ginger admires her husband, John, for supporting her and for coaching sports. A Poway High School junior, her son, Tyler, is a wonderful student, runner and volunteer who coaches basketball and soccer. A Poway High School freshman, her son, Justin, is a good student who plays football and lacrosse. Daughter Kelly, a Chaparral Elementary School fifth grader, is a great student who manages to play softball, basketball, soccer and piano, ride horses and participate in Girl Scouts. Due to her busy schedule, Ginger values personal time. She’s an advocate of getting up early and working evenings so she can spend lunchtime outdoors. Expect to see her running Mt. Woodson and Iron Mountain this summer to train for a significant elevation changing 50-mile trial run in October. Her favorite Poway trail run begins at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, encompasses Lake Poway and winds back through the Reserve. Runner’s World described this run as the ultimate “Rave Run” due to its oak canopy, sparkling water and majestic mountains. And surprisingly, next year she aspires to run a 100-mile trail race under 24 hours. 

Using a small metal spoon, scoop out the seeds. Dice the cucumber into small pieces equivalent to those matching the broccoli and cauliflower florets. 6. Slice up the entire green onion bundle. 7. Peel and slice carrots to matching sizes as the rest of the vegetables. 8. Once the pasta is ready, drain. 9. In a large bowl, combine pasta, all cut vegetables, ½ cup balsamic vinaigrette, and one teaspoon Lawry’s seasoned salt. Mix together. 10. Place a lid on the bowl and refrigerate while the chicken finishes cooking. 11. Once chicken is cooked, let cool without cutting for five to 10 minutes. 12. Once cooled, cut into bite size cubes and add to pasta bowl. 13. Pour in the remaining ½ cup balsamic vinaigrette and the additional one teaspoon Lawry’s seasoned salt. Mix together.

The Kims Find Time to Help Others at Home, School, Work and Abroad by wynne love | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

tan, Cindy, Kylie and Kellan Kim live in the Silver Saddle area of Poway. "We moved here from Los Angeles to find a quiet life to raise our kids and also to be closer to our parents," related Stan. "We really enjoy living in Poway because it has an open feel, yet still affords great recreation opportunities for our family and tremendous schools for our kids." The Kims take advantage of those opportunities. "Our family is quite active," commented Stan. "We mountain bike, snow ski, play tennis and practice martial arts; we also love fly-fishing." Cindy also competes regularly in triathlons and marathons, participates in cross-fit training, and rides horses every week with her daughter, Kylie, age 12. But keeping active physically is just the beginning. "Our entire family is also quite involved with music, playing and performing together not always brilliantly, but certainly enthusiastically," joked Stan.

Where’d this magazine come from? Meet the

Team

In 2009, we launched our first community magazine. The goal was simple – to publish a local magazine that people actually wanted to read. Since publishing our original issue back in 2009, ZCode Magazines has grown to a family of 10 community titles, each focusing on specific areas of North County. The ZCode team, or shall we say, family, takes great pride at meeting our overall goal in every issue we build together. We all live locally in San Diego and we are actively involved in every one of the communities. Whether we are shaking hands, meeting people, participating in school, sports, organizations and philanthropic events, we are out there learning and sharing the good news about what’s going on in your community. Thank you for inviting us in to your home and being a reader of 92064 Magazine.

Derrick Breaux | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics and sales teams.

Tyler McElhaney | Creative Director The nickname “Tynology” can almost describe my obsession with the latest, greatest, newest, most exclusive “thing.” At the ZCode office one can usually find me designing covers, playing with cameras, editing photos, redesigning websites, searching for “that one” cable, fixing computers and re-redesigning websites.

Tara Pritchett | Editor Born and raised in San Diego, I’m a mom to three beautiful daughters and a spunky golden retriever. I have spent over 14 blissful years married to the love of my life where every day brings us adventure and joy. A daily run keeps me happy. At the office one can find me giddy about upcoming feature stories and excited about the inspirational and community-driven people who I have the privilege to meet on a daily basis.

Sarabeth McElhaney | Associate Editor As a San Diego transplant from the City of Good Neighbors, I am constantly falling deeper in love with my “new” home every day. ZCode has helped me discover everything there is to offer in our bountiful region of the west coast. At the ZCode office one can usually find me sorting through the mountain of news and events in our area. You know I mean business when my hair is tied up in a messy bun.

Jessica Breaux | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

Katie Mott | Senior Graphic Designer Originally from Indiana, the pull of the ocean got me out west. I have happily lived in San Diego 5 years now, and if I’m not in the office, I can be found soaking up the sun at the beach, kayaking, playing with my pup or traveling to faraway places every chance I get. At the ZCode office one can usually find me rallying around everyone to hit our deadlines!

Mani Salazar | Graphic Designer San Diego born and bred, I’ve been to 49 states and wouldn’t live anywhere else! (Alaska is #50). Married for two years to my beautiful wife, we enjoy traveling and going on as many adventures as possible. I’m blessed to design for a living – it’s definitely my passion. At the ZCode office one can usually find me staring wide-eyed at the monitor, eating sunflower seeds, being extremely OCD with my designs or trying to sneak in as much hand-lettering as possible. Who says we have to grow up?!

Traci Sally | Graphic Designer I recently moved to Carlsbad from Philadelphia checking off a landmark goal on my bucket list to make a home by the ocean. I’ve been designing for the past 10 years and can’t imagine doing anything else. Outside work I trade my mouse for a paintbrush or my woodblock press and enjoy spending time on the local beaches. At the office one can find me creating smartly balanced ads and layouts fueled by a giant Starbucks iced coffee (venti, no room with an extra shot, shaken)

Heather Lockwood | Production Coordinator I am a mother to two wonderful boys, and a wife to the love of my life of 16 years, with over nine pets; dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and fish. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

Sally O’Neill | Production Coordinator I am the proud mother of a fun-loving teenager. When I’m not perusing college sites online or on another college tour, I like taking long walks with my husband, friends and my dog, Rascal. Cooking, entertaining and dining out are favorite pastimes as well. At ZCode, I work closely with advertisers and our graphics, sales and editorial departments. My nickname is “Office Mom.” I love taking care of our amazing team.

Heather Reynolds | Senior Marketing Consultant It had always been a dream of mine to live and work by the beach in Del Mar, and now I’m living it! I enjoy walking my dogs on the beach, hiking Torrey Pines and playing beach volleyball with my daughters. ZCode is like one big family. We all work together and share one common goal - to create a magazine that people want to read. Everyone wins!

Michelle Dastyck | Senior Marketing Consultant My first sales job was at the age of seven. My parents owned Santa Fe Clothing on Stevens Avenue in Solana Beach. My “job” was to select just the right tie for customers buying a new suit. Who could resist a seven-year-olds fashion pointers? You won’t find me at the office very often because I am out spreading the word about ZCode and meeting with local Carlsbad businesses.

Zeena Gregg | Zeena Gregg Photography | 92129 Photographer I have been married for over 20 years; have three wonderful children and love living in San Diego. Photographing people makes me happy as there is something very satisfying about being able to capture someone’s personality – their true spirit – in a photograph. Being a photographer for ZCode Magazines means I get to meet so many amazing families, students and individuals within our communities.

The 17th Annual Gerry Wilson Golf Classic was held at Maderas Golf Club in early June. The event began with a shotgun start and lunch provided by Sycuan Casino. This year’s Gerry Wilson Golf Classic hosted nearly 120 players for a day of golf, games, dinner and auctions, with photo booths, libations and themed tees. Keeping with tradition, the 9th Annual Wacky Slacks Contest was held as a tribute to former Better Business Bureau (BBB) CEO Gerry Wilson, who was known for wearing outrageous trousers to the tournament. Dave Ferguson was awarded “Best Individual Wacky Slacks” and the team from Platypus was awarded “Best Overall Theme/Wackiest Outfit.” The team from FBS Property Management was awarded “Best Tee Theme” in their Gilligan’s Island outfits and props. Golfers gathered raffle prizes and joined together for a dinner hosted by the current BBB President & CEO, Sheryl Bilbrey while they bid on silent auction items ranging from a Catalina Island getaway, spa packages, tickets to the American Music Awards and more. Attendees were also encouraged to participate in a live auction featuring a signed Tim McGraw guitar and tickets to an upcoming concert, a three-night stay at The Modern Honolulu Hotel and a package of field level Padres tickets and dinner at a Cohn Family restaurant. All items were generously donated by members of the San Diego community.

Students Receive Scholarships from Chelsea’s Light Foundation A “service over self” ethic coupled with academic drive earned 10 San Diego County high school students the third year of Sunflower Scholarships to be awarded from Chelsea’s Light Foundation. The Sunflower Scholarship Class of 2013 represents students who now attend an array of colleges including CSU San Marcos, Harvard, UC Riverside, Whitman College and Yale. A total of $73,000 will be awarded to these 10 students over the next four years. “Just as Chelsea was one-of-a-kind and lived an extraordinary life, these teenagers are compassionate, visionary and will make positive change in their own unique way,” said Kelly King. “They value individuality and embrace diversity in activities, relationships and perspective.” The Sunflower Scholarship Fund was established to reflect the attributes which Chelsea King embodied as a young citizen and student at Poway High School, and is powered by the success of the annual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” 5K. In 2013, over 6,000 participants ran and walked to support scholarships. Finish Chelsea’s Run is already confirmed to take place March 1, 2014 in Balboa Park.

T

he world of custom shirts and apparel is a dark and scary place. Vectorized artwork? Color separation? Screen fees?! Don’t worry, there’s a new shop in town that is bringing a new attitude to an otherwise confusing process. Viva Merch, based in Rancho Bernardo, can provide your business, organization, school or event with professional, high-quality shirts for less than you might expect. But that’s not all, as the shop includes an in-house design team who can turn your creative vision into a reality. at a glance and travel the world in various musical groups, Nick became dependent on merchandise sales to make a living. He explained, “My experience is double-sided; one, being the producer of merchandise goods, with the other side actually being the customer purchasing and selling the merchandise for profit. My experience extends out to our customers on many different levels so they can fully take advantage of promoting their business, school, brand or band effectively.” Items such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, sweatpants, polo shirts, V-necks, baseball tees, athletic wear and more are available to adorn your visions and designs onto. The concept of a rodeo in Poway began when two Poway Valley Riders Association (PVRA) members, John Walker and Jack Miller, put their heads together. It took them several years and a trip to the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City to prepare and make all of the necessary arrangements to sponsor a sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Rodeo in Poway. Through their efforts, members of the PVRA, the Lions Club and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the Poway Rodeo Committee was formed and the first Poway Rodeo was produced in 1973. This year, the Poway Rodeo will continue to feature the traditions of the Old West and cowboy heritage while honoring 41 years of the Poway Rodeo. The Poway Rodeo, held on Sept. 27 and 28 this year, has established itself as a mustdo annual event that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Old Poway Park

When retired Army Colonel John S. Porter settled in Poway in 1948, he had a dream to revitalize Old Poway and make it a place for the community to come and enjoy the old west. Through the years, he acquired and built the beginnings of a historic village to include the purchase of the 1907 Baldwin No. 3 Steam Locomotive and a halfmile track. When he died in 1979, he had not completely fulfilled his dream of a fully operating historic village. In

1986, the City purchased the 4.75-acre Porter estate and Steam Locomotive, and its rail. From there, Old Poway Park was built. Historic buildings from various locations in Poway were brought to the site and restored and the park officially opened in July of 1993. Now, visitors can see life as it once was at the turn of the 20th century. While you’re there, ride the vintage 1907 Baldwin No. 3 Steam Locomotive, visit the Heritage Museum and Nelson House, tour historic buildings, dine at the popular Hamburger Factory or just enjoy a picnic with family and friends.

Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge You have seen it, have you crossed it?

Located immediately to the west of the I-15 span, this high traffic bridge opened to the public on May 15, 2009. It is of a stress-ribbon design, the longest of its type in the world, and only the sixth to have been built in the United States. This design was chosen for having the least impact on environmentally sensitive habitats in the construction area. This span is officially named the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bicycle Pedestrian Bridge, after a retired planning commissioner. On any given day you can find locals crossing the bridge on foot, bike, skateboard, scooter, stroller and other modes of transportation that fit the width of the bridge.

Laura Farmer-Sherman, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen San Diego, shared her gratitude, “We are overjoyed the Kickin’ It Challenge raised money for San Diego women for the second year in a row. WHAT A BOWL Lake Hodges Bowls Club is Revived and Thriving by Wynne Love | photos by Spark Photography

Lake Hodges Bowls Club To promote the sport of bowls and the spirit of fellowship, good sportsmanship and friendly rivalry among its members. www.lakehodgesbowlsclub.com; hodgesbowls@gmail.com Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday & Sunday at 9:30 a.m. When established, the youth league will play on Sunday mornings.

here's some fierce competition brewing at the Lake Hodges Bowls Club, but you may not have noticed. Club President, Georgie Deno described: "As we embarked on our effort to revive the LHBC, the most frequent comments we heard from people in the community were that they had never heard of lawn bowls or that they didn’t even know we were here." So Georgie Deno and her Vice President, Melanie Vizenor have spent the last year working to change that. Never played lawn bowling yourself? As Georgie explained, "The object is to roll an elliptical ball (called a bowl) down the green toward a small white ball, called the 'jack,' and land closer than your opponent. Where it gets tricky," Georgie added, "is in the arc that the bowl takes in arriving at its destination." The Lake Hodges Bowls Club, or LHBC, manages two greens in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park, including the only lighted green in San Diego County. After grant and foundation funds were exhausted last fall, the club was considering closing its doors. "Melanie and I visited the club

premises and were startled at the largely excellent condition of the facility," remembered Georgie. "Basically, all that was needed was members! I looked at Melanie and said, 'We can’t just let this club slip away. How hard do you want to work?' Now the club is thriving, supported wholly by member dues." The LHBC hosts games all year round and welcomes players ages 12 and up. As their website aptly explains, "Neither youth nor strength will help you achieve stardom in the game of bowls. It's a game that relies on consistency of delivery and outsmarting your opponent." Georgie elaborated, "Since bowls is a finesse rather than a strength sport, people of all ages and both genders can, potentially, compete equally with one another." That's just one reason Georgie likes it. "I’ve never been a very athletic person," admitted Georgie, "but here was something that afforded the chance to play a competitive sport and get to know new people." Come on out and join her for a free lesson or host a group event. "We are always happy to welcome people to try bowls," assured Georgie. 

Strong New Beginnings S

ummer. The word alone seems to have a blissful ring to it considering most of this season is a break from school. Many students are involved in diverse activities throughout their summer vacation. Some may be experiencing the opportunity of a job or internship, allowing the exposure of the workforce while others may take vacations to visit family or to experience the wonders of traveling abroad. There are also students who take on additional schoolwork during their break, either to repeat a course or maybe to get ahead of their A-G requirement for graduation. And certainly, every student takes a few days to just relax from their busy schedules. After all, summer is time to rest and become rejuvenated for the new school year. While the summer of 2013 comes to a

conclusion, it is time to prepare for the new school year ahead. As a member of the class of 2014, I know I am eager to begin my senior year. This year, Poway High School will be experiencing some changes. Principal Scott Fisher is retiring and Ron Garrett will be the new principal. Mr. Fisher will certainily be missed, while Principal Garrett will be welcomed with open arms. Like the beginning of every school year, fall sports and the Emerald Brigade will start practice for preparation of their new season. These sports include cross country, football, girls golf, field hockey, girls tennis, boys water polo, and girls volleyball. Poway High School’s Emerald Brigade is preparing for their musically challenging and visually creative field show for the upcoming year. Practices will start

in August to prepare for the exhilarating season ahead. Titan sports and visual performing art activities always seem to excel through each season because of student dedication and persistent preparation. The 2013-14 school year is sure to start of strong and accelerate throughout the year with the anticipated accomplishments of students, scholars, athletes and musicians alike – all with the guidance of staff, teachers, parents, volunteers, friends, counselors and the new administration. he Poway Days Parade will continue its 48-year tradition on Sept. 7. Audiences from local communities in and around 92064 have enjoyed the performances of several high school bands, the aesthetic appeal of beautiful floats and the happiness that comes with being with family and friends. This momentous occasion kicks off a slew of Poway-centered activities, including the Tour de Poway. “Poway is a city that cherishes its history and its sense of community,” said Pauline Getz, President of the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps, the lead organizer along with the Poway Rotary Foundation. “After 48 years, it simply is not acceptable that this important community event might not happen.” Although the parade occurs during the academic year, high school bands practice diligently for their march, with their incentive being the opportunity to gain recognition for their musical talent. Previous winners such as the renowned Rancho Bernardo High School Royal Regiment will, no doubt, be perfecting their pieces in order to maintain their status.

“It’s a pretty unique event when all of the Poway Unified School District bands get together. A lot of us enjoy it because we feel like we’re serving the city in a special way,” remarked Karen Ding, member of the Del Norte High School Nighthawk Marching Band. Now in their fourth showing, the Nighthawks hopes to impress the judges and achieve recognition this year. Likewise, volunteers have opportunities to serve the community. Last year, many were able to participate in the Friends & Family Community Connection (FFCC) Annual Food Packaging event, a volunteer opportunity that allows participants to package protein-filled meals to the needy in African nations that are lacking proper nutrition. In addition to FFCC, other organizations throughout San Diego will be able to represent their pride in their cause through gorgeously-decorated booths and floats. This year, the parade will do its theme “I Love a Fit Poway” justice with a health expo for participants in a 5K run early in the morning. But when the parade does start at 9 a.m., the community can be sure to expect another wonderful day in the city of Poway. ¢

n the early 1990s, the San Diego County Sheriff Department began turning to volunteers to bridge the gap between the increasing need for services and a dwindling budget. In 1994, the Poway Senior Volunteer Patrol (SVP) was formed and has helped keep the community of Poway safe and secure ever since. “SVP acts as another set of eyes and ears for the Sheriff. Our patrols primarily consist of completing a set of scheduled YANA (You Are Not Alone) visits and security checks on homes while the residents are on vacation. We also patrol key areas and call for deputy support if we see anything out of the ordinary,” explained Pete Babich, the Poway SVP administrator. In addition, SVP volunteers are available to respond to traffic accidents, fires and emergency situations. The SVP offers residents of Poway, who are over 50 years of age, a unique opportunity to give back to the community. There are no dues or registration fees to become a member; the only volunteer requirement is time. “In 2012, our volunteers donated over 16,000 hours to relieving

deputies from non-confrontational situations,” related Babich. This commitment to the safety of Poway residents is vital to ensuring that deputies remain available for more serious calls for service. Babich also pointed out that all members of SVP are required to complete a two-week SVP Academy. After graduation from the academy, volunteers receive their badge and are issued uniforms and other required equipment. According to Babich, the vision of the SVP is to provide three six-hour patrols per day six days per week with nobody working more than one shift per week. “Currently, we have 45 members on the Poway SVP, but in order to achieve our mission, the patrol will need to grow to 55 members,” said Babich. The Poway SVP is also committed to developing an SVP unit in 4S Ranch. As stated by Babich, at least six volunteers dedicated to 4S Ranch patrols are needed before the 4S unit can begin operating on its own. He encourages all those interested in volunteering for either the Poway SVP or the 4S Ranch unit to call 858-232-8000 or visit www.powaysvp.org. 

Wranglers Square Dance Club Celebrates Student Graduation & New Class

T

he Wranglers Square Dance Club announced its 40th anniversary student graduation in June, with 18 students now able to square dance at a “Plus” level. The club began on April 9, 1973 when nine couples finished square dance instruction taught by Sherm Barth. Those couples quickly recruited others and graduated the club’s first “class” of dancers in September of 1974. There has been a new Wrangler class taught every year since, and this year’s class enjoyed their new dancing skills at a graduation dance at the Rancho Bernardo Community Center Gazebo in late June. Class members learn roughly 115 “calls” over a nine-month period, which qualifies them to dance at the Club’s “Plus” level. Club members serve as “angels” (dancing helpers) for the students during the Wednesday night classes. A new Wrangler class begins Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Rolling Hills Elementary in Rancho Peñasquitos. Currently the Club holds its dances at Rolling Hills Elementary School during the school year and at the Gazebo in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park from June through August. The club’s annual “Hustler Rustler” western-themed dance is held in November at the Poway Community Center. Dances are attended by people from all over San Diego County.

Wrangler Club membership has varied from the original 18 to over 130 regular club members in the mid-1980s. The club, currently 62 strong, has members from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch and surrounding areas. In addition to teaching classes and holding monthly dances, the Wranglers also participate in community events, and do demonstrations to bring others into the activity. There have been Wranglers in Rancho Bernardo’s Spirit of the Fourth parade, Grape Days, RB Alive, the Escondido Street Fair, the San Diego County Fair and Poway’s Spring Fest Street Fair. The Wranglers also participated in a square dancing “flash mob” last November in Balboa Park. Recently a square dance “demo” was done at the 7th Annual PQ-NE Action Group Neighborhood BBQ/Picnic, and members of the club helped Del Norte High School students complete a “final exam” for their physical education course. The club is run by a volunteer board of officers led by current presidents, Mary Sundberg Whealdon and John Coffin. The Wranglers are an affiliate of the Palomar Square Dance Association. Visit www.TheWranglers.org and www.Facebook.com/WranglersSquareDanceClub for more information. ¢

Good Friends, Good Music by JACKIE WIBOWO

“G

ood friends, Good Music.” That’s the motto of the Pomerado Community Band, a group comprised of over 70 members in North San Diego County. While some of the members are professional musicians, most have full-time jobs who enjoy giving back to the community. Lead by Dean Hickman and a board of directors group, the band is funded by donations, ticket sales, as well as fundraisers. They are known around the communities to perform everything from jazz medleys to classically-inspired compositions. “The most rewarding part about playing [with the band] is getting together with a group

of similar-minded musicians and playing music. Then, after the music is refined, playing before an appreciative audience,” said Jim Luxon, a physicist who plays the baritone horn for the band. The members recently performed at the annual USS Midway Wreath Ceremony in late May and at Old Poway Park for the Fourth of July celebration. Interested in joining? The band does not have auditions, dues or membership fees. The only requirements are attendance at most rehearsals as well as high school level playing skills. For more information on the band and upcoming performances visit www.pomeradoband.org. ¢

The Good News / Bad News of Today’s Real Estate Market by DAVID RUDD

A

s the real estate market has heated up, many homeowners have contacted me regarding the sale of their home. It’s natural to be excited when the value of your home has increased significantly in just six months – it is great news. • Multiple Offers • Bidding Wars • Over Asking Price But, if you are staying in San Diego, you will experience the other side of the real estate transaction when buying your new home – offers not accepted, home is ‘overpriced’, and limited homes to view. So while it may be a great time to sell, it’s a challenging time to buy. Before putting your home on the market, make sure you have a strategy that includes a purchasing plan for your new home. Have your agent show you homes that meet your criteria, see how long they typically stay on the market and what the final selling price was, before listing your home. That way when you list your home, you can do so with confidence. ¢

THINK SUPPORT

FIRST An Initiative to Bring Vibrancy and Improvements to the Community San Diego North Chamber of Commerce (SDNCC) and ZCode Magazines have recently partnered to bring the Think Local First campaign to the community. The initiative will encompass all businesses and communities in the north region of San Diego. The campaign is designed to strengthen the economic base of our local communities by encouraging local purchasing, contracting and services. Did you know that when you purchase products, services and hire within the region, it has a tremendous impact on the success and vibrancy of the community? You may ask why the campaign? What is the big deal about shopping locally or visiting a neighborhood restaurant rather than one that may be on the outskirts of town? In a nutshell, when you shop locally, you invest in the community. In this economic climate, the best return on investment is in local business. It is estimated that for every dollar you spend, twice as much will be reinvested in the community by a local store than a national store. Think about the long-term effect of your spending choices. The shopping decisions you make today have a ripple effect on our local and regional economy.

5

REASONS TO THINK LOCAL FIRST...

1. More money recirculates in the community because local

2. 3. 4.

5.

businesses purchase from other local businesses, thus building the tax base and making improvements to multiple local entities. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and provide the most new jobs to residents. One-of-a-kind businesses create a distinctive character in the community. There is something to be said for being proud of “the bubble you live in. Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community's future. They end up being the biggest cheerleaders for local sport teams, organizations and schools. There will be a reduction on the impact to the environment. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases which requires less transportation. This means less congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Make a decision to find and patronize locally owned businesses, restaurants, storefronts, and so forth, wherever and whenever possible. When you shop online with out-of-state companies, there is zero contribution to the local economy. So check for businesses who offer the same products nearby. Each time you choose to spend your dollars at a local, independent business, you are voting for the continued strength and vitality of our community. So, make it a point to Think Local First! We are all in this together.
