Vol. 3, No. 7 TM

The Big 4-0
F
Derrick Breaux Publisher
or as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be older. When I was a child, I wanted to be a teenager. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be an adult. In college, I couldn’t wait to start my career. At nineteen, like most people, I just wanted to reach the legal drinking age. As each year passed, I felt like I was inching closer and closer to something – perhaps some type of goal or milestone? After all, these markers tend to be big deals in all of our lives. We often see them as the ‘end’ of distinct categories. The end of our teenage years... The end of high school... The end of college... The end of our twenties... I’ll take it even further. Have I simply been on course to reach middle age? Goodness, did I really just say that? After spending a few minutes on Google, I’ve concluded that most people classify middle age as 45 to 65 years of age. Apparently this is a relatively new frame of mind because until recently, it was generally thought that 40 to 60 years made up the bracket’s classification. I assume that it wouldn’t be difficult to figure out what age group initiated the sudden five year shift. Turning the big 4-0 was actually a pretty cool experience. My adorable wife worked hard to put together an incredible 40th birthday party. I was humbled by the whole experience – surrounded by dear friends, family members, acquaintances and colleagues spanning multiple decades of memories. The most common question that people have been asking me is how it felt turning 40. The honest truth is that it’s great. For the first time that I can remember, I feel like I am actually at the beginning of something. I’m motivated and inspired. I’m right where I want to be – at the exact age that I want to be at. Truth be told, throughout my thirties I often thought of reaching forty. I’m there and it’s going to be a fantastic decade! I’m no longer looking too far into the future. In fact, I’m doing just the opposite. Spending time with my family and enjoying watching my kids grow into their pre-teen years and young adulthood is an amazing thing. If only there was a way that I could convince them that there is no rush to get older and move into the next category of their lives – but that’s a topic for a different publisher’s note. Oh, and by the way, I subscribe to the new way of thinking – the one that says middle age is classified as 45 to 65 years old. A special thank you to Google for clarifying that and giving me a five year cushion.

“In over ten years of purchasing branded merchandise for various businesses, I have found Viva Merch to be, by far, the easiest to work with, most professional, and most timely company that I have worked with. The quality of the designs and the finished product have been second to none. The entire team works with me to make sure that I am happy with the final results in a true collaborative fashion. They have a way of taking a crazy idea that I have floating around in my head and bringing it to life, all the while making it better through their own individual contributions. he relationship between horse and man has long been a vital one. This continues to hold true today at Poway Valley Therapeutic Riding (PoVa). With the help of the horses and volunteers, Ingrid Mourey oversees the program that changes lives for everyone involved. Children and adults with a wide range of disabilities come from around the county each week for their riding lessons at PoVa, located at Creek Road Ranch. These equestrians work on skills most people take for granted, such as grasping to hold the reins, communicating to tell the horse "whoa," or balancing to adjust to the horse’s stride. Students take even greater strides as a result of their riding lessons; the physical and cognitive skills improve daily life for the riders and their families. “We strive to enhance the lives of our riders, their families, and volunteers in a safe, equestrian-oriented environment,” explained Ingrid. PoVa was founded by Ingrid, who now serves as the Executive Director, after working at a therapeutic program in Fallbrook. She saw the need in 92064 and, with the prompting of a few friends, formed a board and began offering lessons in May 2011. “With the assistance of key staff, volunteers and donors, we have grown tremendously and are now teaching over 3,000 lessons per year,” Ingrid said. As a nonprofit organization, the PoVa Club, the monthly giving program, provides support on an ongoing basis to offer lessons at a subsidized rate. In the fall, the Jack-O-Smash 5000 Fall Festival is a major fundraiser. Scheduled for Nov. 2, 2014, the event includes a 5K run, 1K run/walk, a wheelchair race and family activities. In addition to the financial contributions, PoVa is in great need of volunteers with horse experience. When she isn’t horsing around at PoVa with her volunteers and the students, Ingrid loves spending time with her husband Ron. They can be found kayaking at Lake Miramar, hiking around Lake Poway, or playing with their three dogs at the dog park. Ingrid and Ron, married for twenty-five years and residents of Poway since 1994, have three grown children, Ryan (23), Alyssa (21), and Erich (18). “We endeavor to change the lives of our students one ride at a time,” Ingrid shared. With their volunteer crew putting in over 200 hours of service per week and a barn full of amazing horses, PoVa continues to serve the therapeutic needs of the community. ¢

ancing is more than a hobby for Haley Andranovich – it is her passion. “I’ve been dancing since I was 5 years old – I started at Jean Hart Academy of Dance in Poway – and over the years I’ve fallen more and more in love with it,” revealed Haley, a senior at Poway High School and a member of the dance team. Haley is an accomplished dancer and has won numerous awards at local, state and national competitions. She was recently crowned Miss Dance Drill Team California 2014 and will compete this month in the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Pageant. “I still get really excited when I look over and see my tiara and sash in the corner of my room. It’s still a bit surreal that I’m Miss Dance Drill Team California 2014,” said Haley.

To prepare for the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Pageant, Haley is working closely with her dance team turned pageant coach, Raul Gomez, to perfect her solo routine and modeling. She and Raul are also dedicating time to preparing for questions that may be asked during the interview portion of the pageant. Haley cites Raul as not only her coach, but also as her biggest dance inspiration. “Raul pushes me every single day to be the very best dancer I can be. He always reminds me to dance from within, and every time I get on stage, that’s what I do,” explained Haley. She is also inspired by her teammates, talented girls she feels blessed to have had the opportunity to dance with over the years. When Haley isn’t dancing, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family. She has a brother, Alex, who is a freshman at Poway High, and a 110-pound dog named Zeus, who according to Haley, is like a second sibling. When it comes to school, Haley’s favorite subject is math. “I enjoy critical thinking and problem solving, and that is what math is all about,” stated Haley. These skills will certainly come in handy for Haley as she pursues her next endeavors which include college, law school and a judgeship. “I would love to be a Supreme Court Justice one day,” related Haley. And although Haley knows she will certainly miss her friends and family as she heads to college in the fall, she is excited to take the next step in making her dreams come true. ¢

served on Valley Elementary’s PTA Board, and assists with fundraisers for both Mt. Carmel High School and Meadowbrook Middle School. Ellen and her family are also involved in College Bound San Diego. It’s an African American-focused community-based organization that strives for 100% of the enrolled children to achieve all of their
requirements to graduate high school, and attend the four-year college of their choice. Ellen elaborated, “Through this group, children are held accountable to their selves, their families and their community. They are encouraged and mentored to be public speakers and leaders in their schools and communities, and they’re required to perform community service.”
As for Tim’s volunteering stints, he has coached his daughters in basketball, soccer and softball. He also plays basketball in the Poway Men’s three-on-three league, and shoots hoops at the Meadowbrook rec gym. Tim joked, “That’s how I escape a house full of women!” The Montgomery women are rarely at their house, however, as all three daughters have their own various pursuits. Timmell, who played JV volleyball at Mt. Carmel, will be trying out for the softball team. Mylen plays the piano, and Sky not only plays the trumpet and the piano, but is also a soccer fanatic. Tim revealed, “Being that we are very active in the activities that Poway offers, it seems that no matter where we “It is now a game to go in San Diego, we always cross paths with someone we know.” see how soon and Ellen added, “It is now a game how many people we to see how soon and how many know when we are people we know when we are away from Poway.” away from Poway.” Though Tim is a native –Ellen Montgomery Southern Californian, Ellen hails from Kentucky. After serving in the army, she moved to San Diego and met Tim while working at Cobham Defense Electronics (after twentysix years, Tim still works there). Ellen is now an executive assistant at Sequenom. In their free time, the Montgomerys love traveling, and have been to Idaho, Texas and Washington, D.C. In the future they’d like to visit Florida, and explore the country’s National Parks (maybe they’ll encounter more Poway neighbors on these trips!). ¢

Conserve, Conserve, Conserve! By SUPERVISOR DAVE ROBERTS
The
vote by the San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors in February was unanimous and the message was clear: conserve, conserve, conserve. Drought conditions in parts of California are as bad as they have been in a century. As the county’s representative to the Water Authority, I joined my colleagues from twenty-four member agencies in support of furthering conservation. The directors’ vote initiated the agency’s Water Shortage and Drought Response Plan to conserve as much stored water as possible so it can be made available where it is needed most. Last activated in 2007, the plan is designed to preserve the water held in storage and to minimize the impacts of supply challenges. The board also approved alerting all of its member agencies that the region is at Level 1 Drought Watch. That means that water district officials must identify specific actions necessary for their communities, such as repairing leaks quickly, limiting irrigation to the evening and early-morning hours and expanding use of recycled and non-potable water. As we lay plans to conserve, we can feel good about our track
28 • 92064Magazine.com • April | May 2014
record. San Diego County has reduced its water consumption by 27% since 2007, even though our population has increased. The Water Authority, to its credit, has greatly expanded the county’s storage capacity and has made capital investments and negotiated agreements to diversify the sources of our water portfolio. Since January, when I took over as the county’s water board representative, I have toured the Colorado River Aqueduct and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. Those trips drove home an important point: that most of the water we consume travels great distances, and at great cost, to reach us. And when water flows from our faucets, it’s no accident. To maintain our quality of life for our homes, businesses and farms, we must continue to diversify our supplies and to expand water recycling and reuse. And of course, conservation is key. To learn more about how to conserve water visit the Water Authority’s website at www.sdcwa.org. ¢ Dave Roberts represents the Third District on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

92064 Writer Releases New Novel
Poway author Susan Meissner has released a new book, A Fall of Marigolds, and celebrates her success as her novel was published under Penguin Group. “The move to the general market place and to Penguin seemed like a great way for me to connect with more readers,” said Susan. “It was almost as if a place in the general marketplace at Penguin was waiting for me and I just needed to step out – before I knew it was there – and make a leap for it.” A Fall of Marigolds meshes Susan’s love for history and characters in the face of adversity. “I’ve long been a history junkie, especially with regard to historical events that involve ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances,” said Susan. Find out more about Susan and her novels at www.susanmeissner.com.

Supervisors Support “Think Local First”
New Homes Offer Solar Power
KirE Builders, Inc. and SolarCity (Nasdaq: SCTY) have partnered to offer solar power for all new homes in their Black Canyon Estates community, open now, and Vista Sereno Estates, opening summer 2014. This partnership makes it possible for homebuyers to pay less for solar electricity than they pay for utility bills. Solar will come standard on Black Canyon Estates homes in Ramona, nestled in the foothills above San Diego, and as an option in Vista Sereno Estates, close to the downtown core in Lemon Grove. “At KirE Builders, we have a twist on the American dream – to own a home with clean, affordable solar power,” said Josh Santa, President of KirE Builders. The model home is located at 23041 Stokes Rd. in Ramona, CA. For additional details contact Lindsay Santa at lindsay@synergyprconsulting.com or 619-540-1631.
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to encourage local spending, as part of the Think Local First campaign by the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce. “Buying locally instead of buying out of town – when the price for the product is the same – will positively impact local business,” Supervisor Dave Roberts said. “This program is designed to grow jobs, strengthen our tax base, and champion commerce in our county.”
PHS Grad Nite Reaches Out
Graduation is getting closer, and with graduation comes Grad Nite for Poway High School (PHS) seniors. To put on a great experience, the Grad Nite committee needs the community’s help, in the form of donations and drives. On May 10, the Grad Nite Committee will be hosting a Shred-A-Thon event at PHS from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $5 per box of shredables. The Grad Nite Committee is also in need of a warehouse space to design and build the sets for Grad Nite. The team would like 10,000 square feet with at least 20-foot high ceilings, but can use as little as 2,500 square feet. If you have a possible space to offer, contact Susan Kernus at dkernus@aol.com. The PHS PTSA website has posted a “Design Wish List” of items needed to build the sets, party supplies and more, which you can find under the Grad Nite tab at www.powayptsa.org.

However, finding restaurants that could meet this need turned out to be an unexpected challenge for the couple. It was at this time that Maria – someone who had grown up in the restaurant business – and Sean conceptualized the idea of opening up their own eating establishment. Since Maria is Greek and Sean, Persian, they wanted their restaurant to not only

provide healthier fare served at a faster pace, but to also showcase food that symbolized the blend of cultures within their family. And so became Luna Grill, a casual eatery providing Mediterranean and Near East cuisine committed to serving delicious and nutritious meals in a sensible amount of time. Aside from getting fresh food to the customer before they can say “kabob,” the philosophy at Luna Grill is to make every experience an excellent one – with a focus on quality customer care. “We are only as good as our weakest link,” offered Maria, “therefore each and every team member is key to making your experience exceptional, and we set our standards very high in terms of the quality and caliber of the personnel we hire.” Another component to the success of the business is the quality of food that is served – something, Maria explained, that makes Luna Grill stand out among its competitors. With such popular menu items as the mediterranean chicken salad, the vegetarian platter and classic chicken kabobs, the eatery provides quality all-natural ingredients that are prepared to order. “We are dedicated to finding SPECIAL ADVERTISEMENT
superior ingredients for our recipes including all-natural, grass-fed meats, organic locally harvested and sustainably farmed ingredients whenever possible to offer our customer the best possible food at a reasonable price point,” explained Maria. Additionally, the majority of Luna Grill’s daily marinades, dressings and sauces are made from scratch. “You can taste and experience the difference,” she added.

Now you can come and see the difference yourself at Luna Grill’s newest location in Poway, where the atmosphere is contemporary yet elegant, and an open kitchen invites patrons to watch their meal go from grill to plate in a matter of minutes. “It doesn’t get any fresher than this!” exclaimed Maria. ¢

Mt. Woodson! There’s More to Poway’s Landmark than Potato Chip Rock photos by Zeena Gregg Photography
If
you’ve been on Facebook or Twitter lately, chances are you’ve seen one of your friends standing (or hand standing) on a thin slice of rock that juts out into the sky. The iconic “Potato Chip Rock” has become a world-famous photo opportunity right in our own backyard. Sitting near the top of Mt. Woodson, the snack-food shaped landmark is far from the only exciting experience on the 2,000+ foot mountain. We talked with Senior Park Ranger Edward Christensen about what it takes to care for one of San Diego County’s tallest icons.

Q&A
with Senior Park Ranger Edward Christensen
What is the history behind Mt. Woodson? Dr. Marshall Clay Woodson homesteaded the area circa 1895. Before his arrival, Native Americans were known to have frequented the area, and called the mountain “The Mountain of Moon-Lit Rocks”. Later Pioneers called it Cobblestone Peak. Mt. Woodson has changed hands many times with the BLM, State of California Department of Forestry, City of Poway, County of San Diego, and City of San Diego owning and managing the mountain. Currently, County of San Diego, CAL FIRE, and City of San Diego own the east side of the mountain while the west side of the mountain is owned by the City of Poway.
Please provide us with a brief summary of your background and experience. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts, I began working as a seasonal park ranger in the National Park Service. I worked at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Cabrillo National Monument here in San Diego, CA. After nine years in the federal system, I was hired on with the San Diego Park and Recreation Department as a Sr. Park Ranger at Mission Bay. In 2007 I began working in the Open Space Division with Mt. Woodson as one of my areas. I’ve been enjoying my work here ever since.
When did you become senior park ranger, if you did not begin in your current position? After working with the National Park Service, I was hired on as a Senior Park Ranger with the city in 2005. The first position I was offered was in the Developed Regional Parks Division at Mission Bay Park. I started working in Open Space in 2007.
40 • 92064Magazine.com • April | May 2014
What attracted you to your current position as senior park ranger? Over the years I’ve worked in some amazing places, had many unique experiences, and met lots of great people. I’ve always liked the idea of teamwork and I jumped at the chance to come here and be a part of this team. The man who hired me described my position as a ‘blank slate’ meaning there was some room to leave your mark in how the park develops. I saw coming to Open Space as a chance to use my college degree in Natural Resource Studies/Wildlife Biology in a way I never could have in a patrol oriented position.
What do you most enjoy about Mt. Woodson? Like most people, I’m fascinated with the enormous boulders that have grown out of the earth through erosion. Exploring around the mountain amongst the piles of building-size rocks is pretty amazing. The elevation of the park also forces a change of plant types and what grows out there is mostly healthy native vegetation, which is really nice to see. Parks in other areas are challenged with bumper crops of invasive plants that crowd out the native vegetation in certain areas. And the view from the top of Mt. Woodson is one of the best around!
What is the biggest challenge facing Mt. Woodson? As with most of our parks, being ‘loved to death’ is an issue. What I refer to is simply the large number of people that visit the park and create some unavoidable impacts. Hiking trails become worn faster, the amount of trash increases, wildlife responds to crowds, the overall experience changes. A certain rock feature on top of Mt. Woodson, ‘Potato Chip Rock’, has gone viral and draws large numbers every weekend looking to get a classic photo. The wait for a photo may be over an hour.

ccording to Mike Mulvey, owner and director of Mathnasium of Poway, math doesn’t have to be scary or frustrating for students; it can be fun and most of all, make sense! “The atmosphere in our center is positive and affirming. We work to reduce math stress and show students that they can succeed,” said Mulvey. Mathnasium focuses on math fundamentals, number sense and an understanding of math concepts at all levels, while helping students catch up, keep up and get ahead. Mathnasium instructors are typically math majors who have also passed a comprehensive math literacy test and have undergone Mathnasium training. They are also vetted for empathetic personalities and the ability to work with younger students. “We offer a low instructor-to-student ratio — 1:3 on average — individualized learning plans and a high level of interaction between instructors and students that allows for the adaptation of the learning plan as needed,” explained Mulvey. It’s
pageant season! The 2014 52nd Annual Miss Poway Pageant will take place on April 19, at 4 p.m at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA). Over forty confident ladies will have spent eight weeks learning skills such as resume writing, public speaking, dressing for success, social media etiquette, and self-defense classes. Poway High School senior and 2013 Miss Poway, Jackie Foster, expressed how much she enjoyed her year in the position. “In my life, I want to make a difference from those who suffer from bullying. Doing a pageant such as the Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant is a first step into getting noticed and having our voices be heard,” said Jackie. She also had some advice to share to the future Miss Poway. “The City of Poway wants strong and independent young ladies to represent them, so be confident and stay true to who you are.” Jackie’s cohort, Miss Teen Poway Kelly Costa, dispensed this advice to future pageant contestants: “My advice to the girls competing this year, is take every moment in and be yourself, but most of all, have fun! Whether you end up with a crown or not, I can promise that you will have gained new lifelong skills, friends and memories.” The pageant is once again sponsored by the Poway Lions Club. Tickets can be bought from the contestants, Pageant Director Sharon Gruber or at the PCPA box office or website. ¢

SPRINGTIME WONDERLAND Blooms Abound at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad
D
by JESSICA WOODS
id you know that ranunculus is Latin for “little frog”? You can “leap” into the new spring by visiting the largest collection of ranunculus flowers in San Diego: The Flower Fields at Carlsbad, a place that is very near and dear to the hearts of many San Diegans. March 1 marks the reopening of the fields, with a rolling hill of ranunculus blooms in every vibrant color you can imagine. There’s even a side that was arranged in red, white, and blue in the shape of the American flag. The time to see these blossoms is now, as the fields will only be open until Mother’s Day on May 11, wherein the flowers will be harvested for sale. There’s so much to do at the fields! Enjoy an antique tractor and wagon ride through the fields, or peruse the works of art made entirely of flowers in the Artist Gardens. The Sweet Pea Maze is a family delight, and you can take your chances at striking it rich at the Carlsbad Mining Company. Visit www.theflowerfields.com for more information. And to future brides, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad during season is the perfect time for a wedding, with the fields as a backdrop, and a real barn on the property for a truly unique reception. So, hop on over to The Flower Fields today, and get a taste of the famed ranunculus’ beauty.
How Did The Flower Fields Begin? The history of the fields stretches back nearly 100 years. Luther Gage, an early settler in the 1920s, shared a ranunculus farm with Frank Frazee. As the 1950s rolled around, after fires and moving the farm, Frank’s son, Edwin, took up the mantle of his father’s trade, breeding “superior ranunculus bulbs” with a “double” petal structure. Edwin then expanded his farms to Carlsbad, where the flowers could bloom best in the mild climate. By 1993, Edwin retired, and Paul Ecke Jr. looked to create a tourist destination so that the fields could survive financially. Thus, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch was born, where people could not only come and enjoy the blooms at springtime, but also purchase the flowers.
Flower viewing isn’t the only thing you can do at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad! MARCH 30: Kid’s Day – Arts and crafts, face painting, and a visit from Ronald McDonald!
APRIL 20: Zydeco Day – The Bayou Brothers will be stopping by with plenty of Louisiana- inspired accordion music to create a memorable Easter.

or Joy Raab, writing and drawing don’t just come easy to her, it is her passion. Starting at a very young age, and fueled by her mother’s encouragement, Joy used the arts as a creative outlet. “Ever since I could hold a pencil, I drew; ever since I could write, I wrote stories,” she said. While a sophomore in college, Joy became inspired by a particular children’s author, “I was amazed and inspired by his rich colorful illustrations, full of expression, enhancing the story,” she explained. Joy was reminded of how, as a child, she had always been a visual learner, learning more by illustrations than by text. It was then that she began to search for ways to use her passion for art and history to create children’s educational books. “The first few years in San Diego I behaved like a tourist, dragging my two young children to all the historic sites,” said Joy. “From the moment I stepped off the plane I was enchanted by the area. I was fascinated by the colorful influences of Mexico and the traces of history left by early settlers and explorers.” That was the year 1999, and by 2003 Joy had published her first children’s book, titled Kate Sessions: The Mother of Balboa Park. “The books that followed continue to reflect my excitement and appreciation for San Diego past and present,” she shared. Her latest project involves illustrating a children’s picture book about the process of metamorphosis. “The book is set to debut spring 2015 at the San Diego Safari Park, in conjunction with their butterfly exhibit,” Joy noted. Aside from being a successful author and illustrator, Joy Raab Joy is currently exploring Art Therapy. “I worked as an North Poway assistant activity director at a nursing home in New Two children, ages 12 and 15 Hampshire . . . I learned how art does not only tell stories, B.F.A. University of Southern Maine, working but also helps in healing,” she explained. “I created several towards MA in Art Education, Boston University art classes for the residents. Some people that suffered Cooking and reading with arthritis or were healing from a stroke only needed an www.joyraab.com adaptive paintbrush . . . For others, the art was more about the process rather than product,” Joy said. “It was a special job that left an impression on me.” Since then, Joy has received training from the Alzheimer’s Association in their Memories in the Making program, and is working toward a Master of Art Education through Boston University. “The program offers a wealth of information in teaching children of all abilities,” explained Joy, “however, the focus of my thesis will be art for populations with special needs.” Joy resides in Poway with her two children and dog, Taxi. “I have lived in different places throughout the United States and Europe. None have offered the unique experience like that of North Poway, living in the country with such close proximity to a city,” stated Joy. “My favorite aspects of Poway are the trails, miles and miles of trails.” ¢

Tips: Everyday Ways
to Protect Wildlife
by TORI MORRISON | Photos by Spark Photography and Project Wildlife Care Center Staff
P
roject Wildlife, a nonprofit organization, serves as the primary resource for animal rehabilitation and conservation education in San Diego County. The organization cares for sick, injured, and abandoned wildlife throughout the County and then ensures that healthy animals are released back to the wild. Educating the public about wildlife interactions is another part of their mission, as they can have a major positive impact on the lives of wild animals.
Sick, Injured or Orphaned The first thing to remember is that wildlife generally view humans as a threat. So even if you are trying to help, too much handling or commotion can lead to undue stress on an animal. Watch to be sure the animal really is sick, injured, or orphaned and then act. When assisting the animal, stay calm. Bring the animal to a licensed rehabilitation center. If you are handling the animal yourself, wear gloves or use a towel and place the animal in a container with air holes.
frequented by coyotes. Also, ensuring trash can lids are tight, not leaving pet food outside and sealing access to garages or crawl spaces will help avoid unwanted wild animal visitors. If these efforts fail to keep wildlife out of your home or backyard, there are also some simple and safe deterrents you can try. These include using chili powder on plants, and installing motion-sensitive lights. Humane wildlife extraction is also an option. Humane exclusion encourages wild animals to leave and not to return without the use of pesticides.
Feeding Animals Avoid feeding wild animals as that teaches them to associate humans with a food source. This act causes wildlife to become too tame and lose their self-protecting fear of people.
Resident Wildlife
If you find an injured or abandoned animal, do not attempt to keep the animal yourself. Its best chance for survival is to get it to a licensed rehab facility like Project Wildlife as soon as possible.
Some wild animals live close to residential areas and may enter yards in search of food or water. Pets should never be left in unattended areas

Feeling the Spirit
THE PYBL CHALLENGED DIVISION GROWS STRONG IN POWAY photos by Leanna Long
T
he Poway Youth Basketball League (PYBL) has long served the 92064 community, but in 1990 Linda Bradbury realized that something was missing. At the time, her youngest son Andy, faced with disabilities, could only watch his older brother play with the PYBL and would dribble balls on the sidelines. The founder of PYBL, Dave Aubrey, spoke with Linda about Andy’s ability to dribble and be coordinated despite his disabilities. “We talked about what it would be like if there was a program for Andy to play,” said Linda. “Before the game was over, Dave encouraged me to develop a plan and present it to the [PYBL] Board.” Thanks to Linda’s efforts, the PYBL’s new Challenged Division debuted in 1991. For the past four years, the PYBL Challenged Division has worked with the USD basketball team to teach their players drills, warm-ups, and ways to improve their skills. In return, the Challenged Division players and parents are invited to a USD basketball game every year. It’s not just the USD basketball team who feels the spirit of the Challenged Division. “We have teens in the area who come to help out with our practices and they get hooked,” said Margot Morpeth, the current commissioner for the division. “Many members of the Poway City Council have come out to participate in the fun. You can’t find more smiles anywhere at one time.” While the Challenged Division runs from January to March every year, they still explore other activities for the special needs players throughout the rest of the year. PHS STUDENT RAISES MONEY FOR SPECIAL NEEDS PROM
P
oway High School senior Amy Nguyen had to create a senior project as a requirement for graduation. While researching for a cause, she came across A Night to Remember, and knew what she wanted to do. A Night to Remember is a city-wide prom in San Diego for high school students with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and other physical challenges. Guests receive a formal dress or tuxedo complete with jewelry, a professional makeover, corsage and boutonnière, a limo ride and a red carpet entrance to the dance, along with an assigned host to accompany them for the event. “The Night to Remember organization really caught my attention, and I am so honored to work with them for my senior project,” said Amy. Amy held her A Night to Remember Charity Fashion Show at Poway High School on March 14 to raise money towards the cause. Prom dresses modeled on the runway were provided by Mia Bella Couture, a dress shop in Del Mar. The 2013 Miss Poway Court were out front to greet guests as they arrived. Fourteen models, students from Poway High School, strutted their fabulous dresses down the runway. After the show, Amy shared, “Tonight was not just about my senior project, but it was also one of the highlights of my senior year. I’m so blessed to be a part of such a supportive community.” She also went above and beyond her one charity night. “I am looking forward to attending prom hosted by A Night to Remember on May 2 and escort a special needs student!” ¢

The Kinetic Chain
A SOLUTION FOR ARM INJURIES IN YOUTH BASEBALL
L
ittle League season is now off and running, stealing bases, and throwing fast pitches. But ten years ago, then Poway resident John Medin noticed a disturbing trend in Little League baseball – the incorrect, and often damaging, way to throw and pitch. With some research, he read up on studies that uncovered the two main causes of arm injuries in baseball: overuse and incorrect body mechanics. John discovered studies from prominent sports medicine institutions that showed 60% of high school pitchers suffered from chronic elbow pain, and that Little League age players are sixteen times more likely to suffer an arm injury, compared to thirty years ago. “This is not a secret,” said John. “Sports medicine has known this for a long time. The sad part is that the very people who need to know this, the youngsters and their parents, have no clue.” While the problem has been identified and sports medicine has found a “correct” way to throw, it’s difficult to tell when a player is or isn’t using the correct mechanics. With two sons who played Little League, John was determined to find a solution. Thus, the Save The Arms project was born.
An Incorrect Throw
A Correct Throw
60 • 92064Magazine.com • April | May 2014
The incorrect mechanics of throwing or pitching result from players throwing with only their arms, and not using their whole body. The safer mechanic is to rotate the hips first, then the shoulders, following through with the throw. This is known as a “Kinetic Chain”, channeling the energy into the throw from the body, rather than John Medin solely from the arm. The trick is to try and watch the core throwing or pitching mechanics of the player. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to tell because this part of the player’s motion is too fast. And that is what the Save The Arms training aid is for. John’s invention was surprisingly simple. “We tried many approaches by trial and error. And then, frankly, one day I had an epiphany and the solution just ‘appeared’ to me. It was simple geometry and the physical properties of a cord!” John’s patented product is a shoulder sleeve with a cord that crosses the body. When the correct mechanics are used for a throw, the cord will bow in an arc away from the body. With incorrect throws, the cord remains rested against the chest. John hopes that this device will serve as a training aid for coaches, parents, and players, and was even approached by Little League International to license the device for use. For more information on the device and Save The Arms, visit www.savethearms.com, complete with training tips and video demonstrations. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
Home Selling Season I
n real estate, March is known as the starting line for the home selling season. Some families begin planning on downsizing as children have moved out, while others look for more space to accommodate their growing family. So if you are
thinking of selling, what should you expect in the Poway housing market? While no one has a crystal ball, economists expect annual home prices to

increase by roughly 3% in 2014. Since Jan. 1, 2014, on average a Poway singlefamily home stays on the market for forty-two days before escrow is open (an

This detailed plan includes minor repairs, contractor work, paint correction, staging, and professional photography, all of which typically takes three weeks. While it may take a little time to make a home look model ready, the end results of higher priced offers and shorter market time, makes crossing the finish line that much more rewarding. ¢
