Camps. Camps. And More Camps!

I

Derrick Breaux Publisher

can’t believe we are thinking about summer already! Where does the time go? I’ve always loved summer. As a kid, I would count the days until school was out. It still seems like yesterday. As parents, the mere concept of summer can be a little overwhelming. Two or more months of kids at home? What in the heck are they going to do every day? How am I going to pull this off? For these reasons, last year we brought you the 1st Annual Summer Camp Guide. We had no idea of how popular it was going to be. This year, I am proud to present the 2nd Annual Summer Camp Guide (see page 38). It is bigger and better than ever! It includes tons of options to keep your youngster occupied during the long break. Grab a cup of tea (or a glass of wine), kick up your feet, and take a peek at the variety of camps being offered this summer. Be sure to reserve your kid’s spot early this year, as summer camps are in high demand and things fill up quickly. And most importantly, tell them you saw their camp in the magazine! All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

Camp Stories From The ZCode Team “I was lucky enough to attend a four-day football camp when I was a kid. We stayed in dormitories, ran cool training drills, watched football tapes, and made some great friends along the way. It was an awesome experience!” – Derrick, Publisher

“Leaving the classroom for the dance studio was always one of my favorite things about summer. I remember attending ballet and tap dance camps, and loving every minute! Summer camp activities are a great way to energize yourself and get active.” – Randi, Associate Editor

“One of my best camp memories was with the YMCA. It was held in Balboa Park. I have memories of shooting bow and arrows and learning lots about different cultures. I saw how they made teepees and learned traditional dances. It was a lot of fun.” – Jessica, Director of Business Development

“I attended an art camp in middle school that allowed me to be creative with styles and tools I had never used before. By taking me outside my comfort zone, I learned to be more open to new ways of doing things. To this day I love the challenge of using a new art medium.” – Shyanne, Associate Editor

POMERADO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES GRANT FOR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS

T

he Barona Band of Mission Indians recently awarded a $5,000 Barona Education Grant to 92064’s Pomerado Elementary School. The Barona Band’s Director of Government Affairs, Sheilla Alvarez, presented the check to Principal Luis Ortiz. The funds will go towards the school’s afterschool programs, providing materials for drama, music, chess, gardening, and multi-media clubs. “Education and development doesn’t end when the bell rings, and is often enhanced by participation in school clubs and extracurricular activities,” said Clifford LaChappa, Chairman of the Barona Band of Mission Indians. “We’re excited that our Barona Education Grant will help Pomerado Elementary to expand its afterschool program.” The Barona Education Grant Program is the first program of its kind created and administered by a Tribal Government in California.

Established in 2005, the program has given over $2.6 million to 532 schools across the state. Each grant is $5,000, and schools throughout California are eligible to apply. The program is an extension of the Tribe’s mission to promote and develop education, which includes the Barona Indian Charter School and a number of scholarships for Tribal Members and other students from the community. Pomerado Elementary’s grant was sponsored by Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who said, “Afterschool programs and clubs are an effective and fun way for children to learn, develop skills, and build confidence. Barona’s Education Grant will aid in the development of Pomerado Elementary students by allowing children to discover new strengths and interests.” To learn more visit www.barona-nsn.gov/education. ¢

Twins Alyssa and Emily Johnson Never Repress Their Expressive Viewpoints by LINDA FRABL | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

G

ender identity is a hot topic, whether it be recent advances in marriage equality or Academy Award-nominated movies. In spite of the media’s focus on gender issues, however, there is still much to learn. Poway High school seniors and twin sisters, Alyssa and Emily Johnson, are doing their part to increase public awareness. Alyssa, who re-opened her school’s GayStraight Alliance club, is working on a senior project documentary on gender. She also discusses gender through her speech and debate club, via the Original Prose and Poetry speech competitions. Alyssa elaborated, “A lot of people limit themselves to a certain label and all the things that come with it, but really everything, including gender, should be seen as a more fluid thing in people's lives. No one should feel limited by their own body.” As the GSA’s vice president and co-founder, Emily concurred, “I'm

most inspired by the hope that my children will live in a better world than I did.” Emily is also in her school’s Safety Wellness Advocacy Community Coalition, where she works towards ending sexual abuse in San Diego. As a survivor of an assault (her case is awaiting trial), Emily gives speeches about overcoming the trauma, and she’s writing a play about what happens after an assault. Emily also interns at state senator Joel Anderson’s office. Both Alyssa and Emily keep physically active as members of their school’s varsity water polo team, yet they also enjoy displaying their artistic sides. Alyssa takes AP Art, and has won awards for her paintings. She aspires towards becoming a museum curator and hopes to participate in ancient world digs as an archeology professor. Emily sings in her school choir and adores sculpting ceramic pieces. After attending junior college, she wants to apprentice at a tattoo parlor and create elaborate skin art masterpieces. As residents of Poway’s Garden Road neighborhood, Alyssa exclaimed, “I love the feeling of living in a small town with all the opportunities of a larger city.” Many of those opportunities can be found at Poway High, where Emily professed, “I love how diverse the classes are; the courses really helped me figure out what I want to do in life.” We know both girls will continue to be game changers who will never let their expressive viewpoints be repressed. 

Reaching for the STARS

TIERRA BONITA EDUCATION FOUNDATION HOSTS 11TH ANNUAL DINNER AND AUCTION photos by Luci Dumas Fine Photography

T

he Tierra Bonita Education Foundation brought the community together once again for the 11th Annual STARS Dinner and Auction. The event was held at Poway’s Maderas Golf Club and included silent and live auctions, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, live music, and dancing. The foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to filling gaps left by cuts in school funding, raising funds to let teachers pursue continuing education, providing educational software, and supporting technology, literacy, science, and art programs. The STAR event has historically focused on Science, Technology, Arts, and Reading; this year, the foundation added Sports to the list. “Our event was a huge success this year!” said STARS Event Chairman Judith McAulay. “In addition to our silent auction with donations from local businesses and teacher outings, we bought robots for our classrooms, raised funds for our drama program, and donated money to replace a dying grass playground field with turf!” The live auction included trips to Cancun and Major League Baseball All Star Tickets. The Heroes provided live musical entertainment, and guests danced the night away. Learn more about the event at www.tbesstars.com. ¢

Name of Chef: Cindy Minx Family: Daniel Minx and Rick Newman Community: Poway Hobbies & Interests: Camping, cooking, gardening, and traveling Favorite Local Activity: The farmers market on Saturday mornings, a hike along Blue Sky, a picnic at Poway Lake, or a glass of wine at the Bernardo Winery. About the Recipe: On a recent trip to Ireland, we fell in love with this stew. Some of the best food is found in the pubs and every pub has a version of this dish. It became a fun quest to see which pub would have our favorite version. This recipe is the closest I’ve come to our favorite. Served here with some delicious Irish Soda Bread. About the Chef: My family moved to Poway in 1975. There was still a hitching post in front of the local grocery store and the high school had farm animals on campus. I moved to the coast while attending college, but when it was time to raise a family I moved back to the best little city in the country. My son, Dan, graduated from Poway High and is now attending school in Northern California. I currently work as a software support specialist. ¢

Discipline & Commitment Poway’s Raquel Justice Is Inspired to Perform by KELLY GUSICH | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

he 2007 Witch Creek fires consumed the home of the Justice family. Raquel Justice, very young at the time, remembers crying, but that her mother told her to turn negative situations into good to triumph over tragedy. She and the family feel so grateful to the Poway community for coming together to aid them when their home was lost,

and Raquel is loving her place in Poway as she, now 11, pursues a present and future as an actor. Raquel’s father is former pro MLB player David Justice. He was in the reality TV show Celebrity Wife Swap – Raquel’s first experience on television. She caught the acting bug from there. Next step was joining Gray Studios out of Los Angeles (with corresponding workshops in San Diego), which she feels “really got me prepared to get out there.” Raquel finds the ability to express herself to be something amazing. “But it’s really hard to be a normal kid sometimes,” she shared. Although she loves everything about school, from favorite subjects of literature, science, and religion to hanging out with her friends and learning new things, she’s recently had to take a leave from St. Michaels to be homeschooled. “I’m just gone to L.A. too much,” she explained. Her latest acting achievement is a role on the television teen drama Recovery Road. The show stars Jessica Sula as Maddie, and Raquel played and will continue to play the younger Maddie. “I loved getting to know everyone,” she said. “It was one of the best experiences of my life!” Besides acting, Raquel loves to sing, dance, rap, and draw, and she’s also played sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and gymnastics. She’d like to be a lead on a show in her future, or maybe have her own show, but other ideas include being an entertainment attorney, director, casting agent, or writer. Plus, she wants to buy horses and live on a farm. “This acting thing that I love so much takes a lot of time and discipline and commitment,” she confided. Her inspirations are God, her family, and actress/singer Zendaya. “I do know that I am very blessed and I thank you for taking time out of your schedule to interview me. Gotta go break a leg!” Raquel Justice is working toward a stellar future in the performing arts. Break a leg, Raquel! 

Woman of the Year

NEIGHBORHOOD ADVOCATE MITZ LEE RECOGNIZED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

A

ssemblymember Brian Maienschein recently honored community leader and advocate Mitz Lee as the 2016 Woman of the Year for the 77th Assembly District. Lee has lived in San Diego for over 30 years, along with her husband and two sons. She is president and CEO of Alliance for Quality Education, president of Pacific Rim Park, and leads the San Diego 6th Council District’s Neighborhoods First Coalition and the D6 Night Market. She served as vice president and trustee for the San Diego Unified School District’s Board of Education, and was the first Asian/Pacific Islander elected to the board. “Mitz Lee has played an important role in making our community a better

place to live,” said Maienschein. “Her work with neighborhood projects and nonprofit organizations exemplifies the ideals of the Woman of the Year award.”

Lee has previously been recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives, the California Legislature, and city officials. Other awards include the Governor and First Lady’s Service Award and honors from the Military Spouse Business and Professional Network, the Asian Business Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. “It is an honor to be named the 77th District Woman of the Year,” Lee said. “This award inspires me to help others in the community to go above and beyond the call of duty to make San Diego, the state, and our nation a better place to live.” Lee received her award during a special ceremony in the Assembly Chambers in Sacramento. ¢

Benevolent Volunteers The Martin Family Focus on Faith, Family, and Community by LINDA FRABL | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

T

he Martins are a faithful and kind-hearted family. In 2001, parents Joe and Kim and their son, Anthony (17), moved to Poway’s Starlight Valley neighborhood because they felt a calling to start up a new church in the area. Now Joe is the senior pastor of the Amazing Faith Christian Fellowship and the missions director for the Pacific

Southwest District of the Wesleyan Church. Kim, a former director of operations for a flooring company, now works parttime as an accountant, “so I can focus more on faith, family, and community,” she admitted. And what a community it is! Joe professed, “Poway has great parks, hiking trails, vegetation,

and picturesque sunsets. The people here share a greater sense of community and look out for their neighbors.” Local activities the Martins enjoy include baseball (Joe even collects Tony Gwynn memorabilia), air softing, target shooting, camping, fishing, and attending concerts. The whole clan also volunteers. Joe has coached Anthony’s baseball teams and has been a board member for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Poway High. Anthony works with children at Morning Creek Elementary. Kim and Anthony both volunteer for Dog Rescue. Plus, through their church, all of the Martins help with setting up and cleaning up at the Poway Chamber of Commerce’s Street Fairs every fall and spring. The family also assists with the North County Inland Pastors’ Thanksgiving Lunch at Abraxas High School every year. With both of Kim’s parents and brother passing away from cancer, raising funds for cancer research is especially important to the Martins. All participate in the Bruce Gorder Melanoma Cancer Walk, as well as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Kim has also done the Susan B. Coleman Breast Cancer Walk five times. Though they give their time to worthy causes, the Martins also give their time to each other, especially on their annual vacations. During these adventures, the family never sweats the small stuff. For example, one year they rented a houseboat and experienced such dilemmas as unpleasant sewage odor, a ski boat that blew its water pump, and a fishing boat that almost sank. But instead of complaining, Joe recalled, “We laughed it all off. When you’re on vacation with family, things like this don’t seem to matter because they are part of the story and add to the memorable times.” 

Future Cities

LOCAL STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR CREATIVE CITY MODELS

L

ocal students from St. Michael’s School were recently among 40 teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students competing at the Southern California regional Future City Competition. The local event was held in Encinitas, and volunteers from the local engineering community served as judges. Nationwide, the competition includes over 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools. The Future City program inspires students to explore the engineering design process, project management, and solutions to real-world problems. Students spend around four months creating their cities, which are designed to exist at least 100 years in the future. This year’s theme was Waste Not, Want Not, and students had to design a citywide solid waste management system. Teams submitted a 1,500-word essay outlining their solution to the theme; a virtual city slideshow; a to-scale city model made of recycled material with at least one moving part and a $100 budget; a seven-minute presentation to the judges; and a project plan outlining their process. Teams from St. Michael’s School won two special category awards. Hope Valley, designed and built by Allyson Atkins, Ann Palayur, and Vianna Schatz, was honored for Best Transportation. Luminous City, created by Annie Pehrson, Lauren Kogelman, and Madeline Duley, was the People’s Choice Award winner, selected by ballot.

:::: HEALTHY SMILES

Can I straighten teeth without braces? The answer is yes, with Invisalign. Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. Traditionally you just pop in a new aligner every two weeks and your teeth move. Since patients’ number one concern before starting is how long treatment will take, Propel has come to the rescue. PROPEL works with the patient’s own biology by stimulating the bone surrounding the teeth, helping the teeth move faster and more predictably into their ideal position. The result allows us to provide the same Invisalign Treatments but with much shorter treatment times. Treatment is typically 50% faster with PROPEL treatment! Usually, each Invisalign aligner needs to be worn for 22 hours per day for 2 weeks to obtain the desired result. Most cases are 12 months in length and most need to have at least one refinement consisting of multiple additional aligners. PROPEL Orthodontics is a newly introduced system that speeds Invisalign treatment, with aligner changes twice as fast at 7 to10 days, and with reduced or no need for refinements. A 12-month treatment can then be completed in as little as 6 months.

How to Calm a Crying Baby by JENNY ILFELD DAVIS, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Rancho Bernardo

You’ve fed, changed, and played with your baby, but the crying hasn’t stopped. Time to take a deep breath and try these tips to help calm your little one.

Fresh air. Getting outside can also help soothe your baby, even if it is just stepping out onto the porch or patio, or walking into the backyard. A breath of fresh air and a glimpse of blue sky can also calm your frazzled nerves.

Swaddling. Recreate the feeling for your baby of being safe and secure in utero by swaddling. Swaddling – wrapping your baby up in a soft blanket – is a timetested way to recreate that cozy feeling. Swaddle your baby snugly enough so that the arms stay down and won’t flail out, but make sure there is enough room for little legs to move.

Motion. Movement, especially a swinging motion, can activate a calming reflex. Try wearing your baby and walking around so that your little one can enjoy the feeling of closeness and the rhythm of your walk. For the first three months, make sure your baby is facing your body in a front-pack carrier or sling for extra head support. Rocking your baby in a rocking chair or glider, or using a motorized baby swing, vibrating bouncy seat or an automatic cradle are other time-honored ways to help the cries stop.

Pacifiers. Many babies are happiest when sucking on something, whether that is a pacifier or your (clean) finger in a pinch. Babies have a natural sucking reflex, and sucking can steady your baby’s heart rate and calm thrashing arms and legs.

Your voice. Singing a song or nursery rhyme will let your baby know that you are there with her. It doesn’t matter if you sing offkey or if you sing a rock tune or croon a lullaby.

White noise. It may seem counter-intuitive, but newborns are often soothed by the steady roar of white noise that blocks out other sounds. While developing in the womb, babies are used to the noise of mom’s bodily sounds, such as a beating heart, so they feel right at home amid noise machines, vacuum cleaners, and fans.

Diet. If you are breastfeeding, consider what you are eating that might cause your newborn to have gas or stomach pain. Babies’ digestive systems are still developing, so they may have difficulty processing some of the food you are eating. Check with your doctor about changes that might help. ¢

She has special interests in nutrition, allergies and asthma, and injury prevention for athletes. :::: COMMUNITY STUFF Cover to Cover

The AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos Branch is hosting its 19th Annual Cover to Cover event on Saturday, May 14. The event will be held at Maderas Golf Club from 9:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the group’s Tech Trek scholarships for local seventh grade girls and the re-entry scholarships for women returning to school as non-traditional students. Cover to Cover is an authors’ luncheon, and the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch expects to see over 200 guests attending. This year’s guest speakers are Tammy Greenwood, author of Two Rivers; Abigail Padgett, author of Child of Silence; and Marivi Solivan, author of The Mango Bride. All three authors live in San Diego. In addition to author talks and book signings, guests can take part in the silent auction, opportunity baskets, and $500 cash drawing. To learn more visit powayarea-ca.aauw.net/events. Cover to Cover reservations are due Saturday, April 30.

Bedside Manners

Stop by PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, starting May 6 for a hilarious comedy of relationships. Bedside Manners centers around a man named Ferris, who’s agreed to look after his sister’s seedy country hotel for a weekend. He doesn’t expect two young couples to arrive for romantic vacations – with each other’s spouses! The simultaneous affairs in the same location lead to a dizzying, humorous web of lies, confusion, and bewilderment, with poor Ferris caught in the middle. Bedside Manners was written by Derek Benfield, is directed by Brent A. Stringfield, and is produced by Chris and Brenda Robinson. Tyler Richards Hewes plays Ferris, Bill Shores plays Roger, Brandon Kaye Thomas plays Sally, Amy Stanley plays Helen, and Tamaz Bolkvadze plays Geoff. The play opens on Friday, May 6 and will run for five weekends, closing Sunday, June 5. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Find tickets and more at www.powpac.org.

Disaster Planning for Pets

Join the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC) on Thursday, April 7 for a presentation on disaster planning for pets. Held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Twin Peaks Rd. at 7 p.m., the forum will feature a presentation by Renay Peters, a local veterinary technician and representative for the Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR). Participants will learn how to make disaster plans with pets in mind, how to make an emergency kit for pets, and what animal resources are available during an emergency. ARR was organized in 1970 by the San Diego Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The volunteers are specially trained to safely evacuate horses, livestock, and pets during disasters. PNEC promotes emergency preparedness through grassroots educational efforts, complementing the City of Poway Emergency Operations Plan. Learn more about ARR at www.sdhumane.org, and learn more about PNEC at www.powaynec.com.

30 Years En Pointe

Southern California Ballet was proud to celebrate its 30th anniversary with a successful special event, called “Spectacular! Spectacular! 30 Years En Pointe.” The venue was just five seats away from being sold out, though the audience was quick to leave those seats when the band, BETAMAXX, started rocking the room with their ‘80s-inspired beats. Committee members Coleen Lublin, Paula and Eli Hameline, Ashley Stanley, Kim and Tom Walpole, and Kelly Weatherhead all worked together to provide a fantastic celebration. Paula and Eli gave a video presentation honoring Sylvia Palmer and Mark Zetler for their 30 years of devotion to educating dancers and producing ballet. Campers play tennis from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., have a snack, and then head to the pool, where they have free play and then organized group swim lessons. “Children are divided by age and ability. We work with beginners to advanced swimmers and players by giving them a workout that will suit their needs and take them to the next level. They will work on technique, as well as play games and win prizes on the court and in the pool,” stated Di. Catalin Chira, the director of the tennis academy at Rancho Arbolitos, and his team of coaches run the tennis portion of the summer camp. Chira is a certified tennis professional who has coached many high level players over the course of his 20-year coaching career.

Dan Peck, Pacific Swim Gold Group coach, was named the high school coach of the year for California, and Owen Molenaar, Pacific Swim Blue Group coach, was awarded San Diego age group coach of the year. NORTH COUNTY SOCCER PARK

W

hile North County Soccer Park (NCSP) lets children get in on the action with soccer and baseball classes year-round, they provide even more in-depth morning lessons during their summer camp sessions. From June to August, NCSP – the longest running arena soccer facility in Southern California – invites local children of any skill level to learn about soccer and baseball while having fun and making friends on the field. “Our soccer and baseball camps are for any boy or girl, regardless of skill, who are 4-12 years old,” said NCSP’s David Brennan. Each camp session runs for one week per month, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. During a typical day, all campers participate in a combined group warm-up, before breaking up into their age and skill-appropriate groups for the rest of the morning. With a small coach-to-camper ratio, coaches are able to interact personally and get to know each camper, thus better providing them with lessons of sportsmanship, skill development, and safety. In addition to the wellqualified coaching staff, NCSP offers versatile facilities that include both turf and grass fields. With fun always being the focus, David said, “We know it’s been a great camp day when the kids are smiling, laughing, and talking to mom or dad about what they learned that day.” Soccer camps run different weeks from baseball camps, with the exception of August. This summer, NCSP’s soccer camps run June 13-17, July 11-15, and Aug. 8-12. Baseball camps will run June 20-24, July 18-22, and Aug. 8-12. The cost of $130 per camper includes their camp shirt given to them the first day, a concession drink every day, and award certificate on the final day of camp. MOBILE TECH SUMMER CAMP

W

hen Dr. Korey Sewell, the founder of Hands-On Technology’s Mobile Tech Summer Camp, placed his son in an after-school program to build Legos, it excited them both about access to technology for youth. But something was missing – why were kids consuming technology rather than designing it? And with that, the Mobile Tech Summer Camp was born. “Mobile Tech Summer Camp is the first camp of its kind to design a cohesive mobile technology program with an emphasis on computer science and electrical engineering for rising third through sixth graders (ages 9-13),” explained Dr. Sewell, executive director and head curriculum designer of Hands-On Technology Education. With two-week sessions offered from June 27 to Aug. 5 at Wangenheim Middle School, students are provided with an exciting curriculum that challenges and entertains each camper based on their levels of knowledge and experience. In either the Introduction to Mobile Technology or the Intermediate Mobile Technology sessions, kids create cool projects involving tablets, Android apps, electrical circuits, and video games. More fun is added with special days that feature Mobile Tech Olympics, Career Day with a variety of local engineers, movie day, field trips to places like the San Diego Fab Lab, and even outdoor activities. “Our philosophy is an ‘Exposure not Exhaustion’ approach to technology. Once kids are truly engaged, they will willingly spend loads of time building what they love,” added Dr. Sewell. By the end of camp, kids are building Android apps, simple video games, and making intricate electrical circuits from scratch. This is technology built by kids who are gaining confidence in our high-tech world – learn more at www.hands-on-mobile.com/summer16. ¢

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS I

nspired by 14 summers of camp experience as a camper, counselor, and director, Stuart Jones decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps, after moving to San Diego in 2001. As the current owners and directors of the camp, Stuart and his wife Kelly strive to provide children with a traditional camp experience that they deserve, complete with outdoor adventures and lasting friendships. A summer at Outpost is free from distraction, as the programs are 100 percent outdoors and device-free – the directors call it “outside and unplugged.” The camps are open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Camps have been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association and have also received Markel Insurance’s coveted Safety First designation for many consecutive seasons with a perfect safety record. Stuart and his wife both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. hile summer vacation offers ample time for students to run, play, and exercise their bodies, it also offers the perfect opportunity to exercise their minds. During the busy school year, students may not get the one-on-one time with a teacher or tutor nor the therapy to develop their underlying weaknesses in learning skills. This is where the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC) comes in. While the center, located in Solana Beach, offers specialized training to students year-round, they utilize the extra time that summer affords by offering specialized camp programs to prepare children for success when school starts in the fall. Their summer programming includes an intensive therapy to overcome challenges and learning disabilities by focusing on underlying learning skills, as well as a learning “bootcamp” for children that are strong in their underlying skills but need work in the areas of math, handwriting, or keyboarding. All of TLC’s programs can help a student be successful in the Common Core curriculum. TLC’s summer programs include both group learning experiences and individualized one-on-one sessions, provided by specially trained clinicians. If a full-day program is chosen, the day may even include outings to a surf camp in Solana Beach or an activity at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA. “A cognitive bootcamp mixed with hours of outdoor exercise is the perfect summer combination for children wanting to enter their next grade level with confidence in their success,” said Maria Bagby, TLC Executive Director. Because spaces fill up quickly, early registration is encouraged. To learn more about TLC and how they can help eliminate learning challenges in reading, writing, and math visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200. ¢

ctivate Chiropractic helps patients of all ages enjoy life to the fullest. “The average person waits until they’re 47 years old to see a chiropractor,” said Dr. Derek Libby, Founder and Owner of the Poway-based family wellness center. “Imagine what your teeth would look like if you waited that long to get a dental check-up! Chiropractic is part of a happy and healthy lifestyle.” A North County native, Dr. Libby specializes in treating neck, back, and joint pain, headaches, expecting mothers, children of all ages, sports injuries, and auto injuries. He’s a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, completing postgraduate training to work with pregnant mothers, infants, and children, in addition to his membership in the American Chiropractic Association. High school athletes and weekend warriors also benefit from Activate Chiropractic’s specialized expertise. “Pain is a signal that your body sends to your brain when your body isn’t functioning properly,” explained Dr. Libby. “Chiropractic gets to the root of the problem and fixes it through the central nervous system.” Patients

enjoy reduced or eliminated pain, renewed vitality, increased ability to focus, improved immune function, greater range of motion and flexibility, and better sleep quality. A patient’s first visit to the warm, welcoming office begins with a detailed exam and in-office X-rays if necessary. Dr. Libby then develops a personalized treatment plan to discuss at your next visit. “We take a no-pressure approach and allow you to take your care into your own hands,” said Dr. Libby. Patients of all backgrounds appreciate the individual, comprehensive approach. “I have seen chiropractors for the majority of my life and can honestly say that Dr. Libby is one of the best!” shared Mary. “His office is extremely welcoming and flexible with my busy schedule. I have received great relief from his adjustments and am even back to exercising again!” “At Activate Chiropractic, we focus on allowing your body to heal itself from the inside out through personalized, hands-on adjustments,” explained Dr. Libby. “Our goal is to stop pain from holding you back from what you love.” ¢

WHY SCRIPPS ROCK DENTAL

DOES WHAT IT DOES

by DR. ANTHONY E. HATCH | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

S

cripps Rock Dental was built around the core belief that the experience of dentistry needs to be changed from the status quo. This dental office was originally born on the East Coast in a commuter town near Baltimore and Washington D.C. From that inception, their aim was solely to deliver the art of dentistry differently. They strive to make the dental experience friendly, easy to understand, and comfortable. In 2007, the practice moved to San Diego, and has continued to redefine the way dentistry is perceived and delivered. They have built a team that loves people – if a team member doesn’t meet that core requirement, they don’t end up staying long. If they do stay, they get to work at one of the most fun and energetic offices in the country. The team members build long-lasting, deep

friendships with one another, and it shows. Patients can feel the level of mutual respect and friendship between team members. Scripps Rock Dental strives to create an environment that makes it easy for their patients to complete the dentistry they need. This means continuously working to take the “road blocks” out of dentistry. This includes knowing the ins and outs of insurance benefits to make dental coverage as easy as possible. It means making a plan for every patient so that the team has a 100 percent clear understanding of where patients are starting from, where they want to go, and how the team with get them there – all before any treatment has begun. The team strives to put patients at ease from the first phone call. Scripps Rock Dental has a light, welcoming atmosphere that you can feel

the moment you walk in the door. Dentistry does not have to be scary or too serious! From the first meeting with your hygienist and doctor, you will sense their love of dentistry and their priority of building a caring relationship with every patient. Scripps Rock Dental loves what they do. Go on over and meet them, they’d love to meet you and show you how easy and fun your dental health can be. 

STARGAZING IN SAN DIEGO

These Breathtaking Views Will Have You Seeing Stars – Literally by SHYANNE LOPEZ

B

eing surrounded by beaches, beautiful landscapes, and a sprawling city, it's no wonder we tend to keep our eyes focused on what is laid out right in front of us. While known for its sunny and clear skies, come sunset, parts of San Diego's skyline are anything but empty – you just have to look up. For years, the area has attracted professional and amateur astronomers and stargazers alike for the highly accessible view of not just stars but also our own galaxy and nearby planets. In fact, this spring, Mars will be the largest and most clear that it's been in more than a decade. It's the perfect occasion to bring out your inner astronomer. While it's tough to stargaze in highly developed areas, you can view them with ease at various rural locations in and around the county that have remained virtually untouched by city lights. So, if you're interested in catching a glimpse of the cosmos this spring, jump in your car and check out one – or all – of these unique destinations. ¢

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Two hours east of San Diego, you can find California's largest state park. The desert is a hot spot for professional and amateur stargazers due to its seclusion from urban lights. In fact, the park's neighboring town of Borrego Springs was designated in 2009 as the second "Dark Sky Community" in the world by the International Sky Association, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nighttime environment.

Tierra Del Sol

Julian

Located in southeastern San Diego County is the Tierra Del Sol observing site. Established by the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA), the site is home to monthly star parties that are open to the public. Star parties offer visitors the opportunity to observe the sky through professional telescopes, and receive guided viewings from experienced astronomers. Learn more at www.sdaa.org.

Primarily known for its apple orchards, this quaint mountain town actually has night skies dark enough to host the SDAA's annual Julian StarFest each summer. This spring, you can admire and explore their starry skies by checking out nearby campgrounds or parks. If you don't feel like roughing it, the town also boasts its own astronomy-themed bed and breakfast.

Torrey Pines State Reserve While you won't see as many stars from Torrey Pines State Reserve, just north of La Jolla, it offers darker skies than expected and doesn't require a road trip. The beach offers the perfect location to look up at the cosmos, complete with the sound of crashing waves. Torrey Pines stays open until 11 p.m., and since it won't be peak visiting hours, catching road-side parking should be a cinch.

:::: TITAN INSIDER by KIENAN MORRISSEY special to 92064 Magazine

Every 15 Minutes

L

ast month, Poway High School, with the help of the Every 15 Minutes Program, held a two-day driving safety assembly on campus. Prior to the assembly, teachers were informed to not tell their students what the assembly was about or what it was for. Students each day were split into various different groups going to different locations. Day one brought the freshmen and sophomores to the gym, where they would find themselves in an hour-long presentation about distracted driving. This assembly was aimed at the younger half of the school to help new drivers get off on the right foot and

make good decisions behind the wheel. The juniors and seniors partook in what was more than your average school assembly. As the upper classmen were told to head to Titan Way, they would soon see themselves in the middle of a very realistic reenactment of a brutal car accident. Although the crash was fake, it was taken very seriously – there was an appearance from the fire department, police department, and a dispatch of paramedics. The crash was said to be one of the students’ peers and even involved students faking deaths. The following day only the upper

classmen had assembly during fourth period. This assembly was a simulated mourning where some of the “dead” student’s parents spoke. This assembly was to help the students understand the full outcome of their decisions while driving. Thanks to the Every 15 Minutes Program, Titan drivers can have a more aware future and make smarter choices on the road. ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

Real Estate Matters

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IN 2016 by SCOTT VOAK

S

an Diego County entered the New Year with the lowest inventory of homes for sale in over 10 years. As of mid-February, that situation remains the same. In San Diego County, the Inland Corridor, and the individual zip codes of the Poway Unified School District, there are fewer homes on the market than any time since early 2004. And, while the new developments in Del Sur and along Black Mountain Ranch are adding more homes for sale, it isn’t any more than developers were selling in 4S Ranch back in 2004, so inventory is really at a decade low. The next question is, “If inventory is the lowest since 2004, why isn’t the market surging higher like it was then?” The answer is twofold: There are not as many buyers and the buyers that are in the market are a lot more cautious than in 2004. Back in 2004, loan requirements were a lot looser and people were buying multiple homes as speculative investments. Now, qualification standards are higher and buyers have lived through the bubble – they are a lot more cautious. The flipside is, at least to date, the falling stock market has not impacted local real estate. The danger here is that people looking to purchase might see their cash fall below down payment requirements. Talking to other agents and escrow officers, this is a big concern, but has not happened in any significant numbers so far. It goes without saying (or should anyway) that if you are looking for a home, the money you plan to use for a down payment should not be in any volatile investment.

For the balance of the year (at least through summer), I think most all factors that affect the market point to a firm market with slowly advancing prices. The number of sales will continue to be lower, which is bad for those associated with the industry, but homeowners should do well and buyers will be able to find deals here and there if they are willing to be flexible with their requirements. ¢
