hard to flip through the pages of your 92064 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).

Order your local Zip Code shirt today at www.WearYourZip.com

All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

P.S. Don’t forget to check out our 2016 Real Estate Issue featuring our local REALTORS® and Lenders starting on page 38. There are many elements that go into building a solid community, and our local celebrity real estate professionals and lenders certainly play a huge part. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses.

Trampoline and Tumbling Wins

ATHLETES FROM LOCAL GYM MOVE FORWARD IN COMPETITION photos by Looking Glass Photography

P

oway’s SoCal TTC hosted 400 trampoline and tumbling athletes from 20 separate teams across California for the third of three preliminary competitions before the California State Championships for Trampoline and Tumbling in late March. The event showcased two-time Olympic trampolinist Logan Dooley and 2015 U.S. synchro silver medalist Neil Gulati, as well as several State, Regional, and National Trampoline and Tumbling Champions competing in the three events – trampoline, tumbling, and double-mini. The athletes who competed in the preliminary competition ranged in age from 7 to 17 and spanned levels three through Sr. Elite. Sixteen of the 70 SoCal TTC athletes competing led their levels and age groups and won 22 gold medals, with Kai Chiaco, KJ Newman, Josh Rasoul,

and Matt Whitmer excelling over direct competitors to win gold in two events. Following the third preliminary meet in March, 50 members of the SoCal TTC team traveled to Ontario, CA and competed at the Southern California State Championships for Trampoline and Tumbling in April. Various awards and qualifying scores there led to 21 team members traveling to Las Vegas, NV to compete again. One qualified for and competed in synchronized trampoline with a partner and got a qualifying score for the national competition in Rhode Island in June. Another eight placed first in their division. Looking forward, five athletes from the TTC team will compete in Rhode Island along with some of the best athletes across the nation at level eight and above. For more information visit www.californiatnt.com. ¢

Kai Middlebrook Succeeds While Improving the Lives of Others

Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling: Favorite Place in 92064:

Kai Middlebrook (18) Poway High School 12 Randy & Fadia Middlebrook Kayla Middlebrook (16) Poway High School

16 • 92064Magazine.com • June | July 2016

K

ai Middlebrook may have been brought up on a tiny island outside of Jacksonville, FL for the first 13 years of his life, but that doesn’t mean he’s a laid-back, “island time” kind of guy. This 18-year-old Poway High School graduating senior is not only a go-getter who has succeeded with wrestling, school activities, and business endeavors, he also has a compassionate nature

that he loves to express. Explaining his long list of accomplishments, Kai humbly commented, “I fail a lot, but I don’t give up and I stay optimistic.” The inspiration for Kai’s benevolent, well-rounded demeanor is his younger sister Kayla, who has a rare seizure disorder that causes developmental delays and an inability to speak. Kai said, “She teaches me so much about patience, kindness, and generosity. I even carry a picture of Kayla in my wallet, which I look at whenever I need some extra motivation to keep moving forward.” Move forward he has. For starters, Kai has amassed numerous honors for wrestling, which he has done for the past seven years. These include being on the Union Tribune All-Academic Team twice, a Masters Finalist, a two-time Coaches Award recipient, a three-time California Team member, and member of the first team All-League. At school, Kai is one of only 12 students chosen to be a Titan Ambassador. This entails him giving presentations at other schools about the importance of good character and leadership. Kai is also president of the Poway Cru Club (a Christian youth program), a multiple award winner at the San Diego County Fair for his photographic entry (first place, best of show, and best of class), the winner of the Entrepreneur Award and the Imagery Award for his school’s robotics team, and an intern at Stifel, a financial services company. Showing his chutzpah, Kai called up the CEO of eFin, a financial technology startup, because he heard him on a podcast and wanted to be a part of it all. That phone call resulted in Kai becoming an associate partner for the company! Kai plans to ultimately get a degree in financial economics and become an investment banker at his own financial firm. Kai also hopes to establish educational institutions throughout the country. He thoughtfully added, “I believe my purpose is to improve the lives of others.” 

EQUESTRIAN NINI HODGE BALANCES HORSE SHOWS AND HIGH ACADEMICS by LIZ ONUFER | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

hat began as a simple request at the age of three to ride a jumping horse has since transformed into a true passion for NiNi Hodge. This 10-year-old Poway resident has been showing horses competitively for the last three years and last year earned the Reserve World Champion at the 2015 Morgan Grand National and World Championship Horse Show. The reserve champion award is the culmination of NiNi’s commitment and hard work, supported by her trainers and family. NiNi trains with her horse, Arboria Invictus (a.k.a. Henry), an 18-year-old bay Morgan gelding, before school and on the weekends at Miller Equestrian in Escondido. “The challenging part is getting up at 4 a.m. each day, then getting to school on time,” she admitted. Trainers Frank and Ann Miller have been working with the young equestrian since she was six. “They always give me confidence, and they are the hardest working people I know,” NiNi shared.

Support also comes from her school, Garden Road Elementary, and the Poway community. “I like that my school, my principal, Mrs. Jeanne Dickenson, and my teacher, Mrs. Embry, support and encourage my riding,” she said. NiNi achieved high academics this year. She also had the honor of March 1 being named NiNi Hodge Day by County Supervisor Dianne Jacobs. On the board of the America’s Finest Morgan Horse Youth Club, NiNi serves as the creative officer, alongside her best friend Lindsay. She also volunteers to help the homeless in downtown San Diego. Naturally, NiNi’s long-term plans include horses and high honors. “My goal is that I want to be the number one equestrian in the world,” she said. “And I want to go to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to study equine science.” Fortunately for NiNi’s future, riding, success, and fun are all found in the same place. “The most rewarding thing is that I get to spend all my spare time with my horse and my friends together,” she said. 

Wash and chop all ingredients into bite-size pieces. In a large sauté pan with the olive oil, place all ingredients into pan and simmer on medium heat for approximately 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This is a delicious low-calorie food you can eat as-is, or add your favorite protein to jazz it up. Make it your own! If you don’t like mushrooms, leave them out. You can also add kidney beans. Name of Chef: Char Thorvick Family: Husband Tom, son Ben (22), and daughter Kate (17) Community: Poway Hobbies & Interests: I enjoy travelling with my beloved family and going to concerts with my best friend Mary. My husband and son are off-road racers in their self-built race car, and my daughter is an aspiring dancer, singer, and musical theater actress. But overall, my main hobby is first and foremost making memories with my family. Favorite Local Activities: Locally, I love taking advantage of the small town comforts here in Poway. Poway Lake, Old Poway Park, our local farmers market, and exploring the horse trails with our Labrador retriever Buddy are just a few of my pleasures in our great little city in the country. About the Recipe: This recipe is one that I have tried to duplicate from my childhood. However, nothing I try can truly replicate my mom’s cooking. She was Welsh and my dad was Italian, so as a result, when she made this dish it was a mixture of both cultures. I came up with this simple healthy version. About the Chef: San Diego has been and always will be the place I call home. My husband and I will soon be reaching our 35th wedding anniversary. I was a stay-at-home mom for 20 years, raising my two children in such a wonderful area. My son Ben is studying engineering at Chico State, and my daughter Kate is a junior at Poway High School. ¢

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL photo by Paula Gomberg

R

ady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary, Poway Unit held its 13th Annual Tabletops and Tea event in mid-April at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The Poway Auxiliary Unit comes together each year with this event to fundraise and advocate for Rady Children’s Hospital. This year’s theme, “Come Fly with Me – Rediscover the USA,” featured tables decorated from destinations around the country as well as a luncheon, silent auction, shopping boutique, program, and live auction. The event was chaired by Bridgett Brown and Deborah Oliver and hosted by BarbaraLee Edwards of CBS News 8. Over 400 people were in attendance. This year, the event benefited Rady Children’s Developmental Services. Senior Director Kristin Gist said, “Rady Children’s Developmental Services provides a full range of developmental and behavioral evaluation and intervention services to children of all ages. We are committed to helping children reach their full potential and there is never a day – never an appointment – where we are not looking for a better way to help our patients and support our families. Every moment matters.” Dr. Kim Lund, whose son Gavin receives treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital, spoke at the event as well. She said, “As a parent of a broken child, you want desperately for repair or any semblance of normalcy because deep in your heart you know your kid wants to ‘do’ things that other kids do. Children learn from and love movement. Physical therapy has brought that to Gavin. When you are told your child will never eat real food, roll over, sit, walk, ride a bike, or talk, things look and feel dark and grim. By adapting to his needs, the staff has brought light and rainbows.” To learn more visit www.tabletopsandtea.org. ¢

District Teachers of the Year

TWO 92064 TEACHERS HONORED BY POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

P

oway Unified School District (PUSD) recently announced its three District Teachers of the Year. The teachers were selected based on innovations inside the classroom, contributions to their schools and PUSD, and commitment to their students. The three teachers will be submitted for consideration for County Teacher of the Year. Carole DeBruin has been teaching for 40 years, with 19 years in PUSD. She is a math teacher at Poway’s Abraxas High School, where she helps her students rediscover the joys of learning and build their sense of self-worth. She has empowered students not only through math, but through an onsite Abraxas leadership club, through which the students work together to enact positive change in their community. Carole was also instrumental in helping to create the Abraxas High community garden, and she is currently working on securing a grant to build “tiny homes” on campus

for use by homeless students. Joe Gizzo has been teaching for 16 years in PUSD. He is a digital photography teacher, the ASB/Leadership advisor, and yearbook advisor at Meadowbrook Middle School in 92064. He created the school’s award-winning digital photography program from the ground up. But perhaps Joe’s greatest accomplishment is that he has done this outstanding work despite severe health challenges, namely a rare autoimmune disease called neurosarcoidosis. While there is no cure for the condition, Joe is now able to manage his symptoms and continues to work with the students and the learning environment that allow him to move past his disability. The third PUSD District Teacher of the Year is Megan Gross, a special education teacher at Del Norte High School. ¢

T

he Loy family has a large backyard – all the better for hosting Young Life Club on Monday evenings. “All my passion is for teens to be in safe and comfortable environments where they feel their own self worth and a sense of identity,” said Kirsten Loy, whose volunteer work centers around youth and education. She taught middle school English and history for 14 years, which is how she became involved with Young Life, and is a former youth director at Redemption Church. Kirsten and Greg Loy have been married for 21 years. Their sons, Noah and Micah, are in their senior and freshman years, respectively, at Poway High School. Greg co-owns his general contractor business, KD Stahl Construction Group. They bought land in 2001 in southeast Poway, below Espola, and custom built their home, knowing it would host hundreds of teens over the years. They moved in by 2003. “There are options out there for teens that don’t include peer pressure and partying,” she stated. Kirsten recently worked with the CHP’s Every Fifteen Minutes, a DUI deterrence program at Poway High, along with Noah, who was chosen as a participant. She’s the volunteer coordinator for Grad Nite, an alcohol-

free school graduation party. “I also volunteer on mission trips to Uganda’s war-torn Gulu region with Children’s Heritage Foundation,” she added. Kirsten has been cancer-free for nearly two years. “If someone met me now it might be hard to believe that I am a stage four cancer survivor,” shared Kirsten, who was diagnosed with colon cancer that spread to the liver and eventually a lung. Months of chemotherapy and healing from surgeries challenged her well-being. Kirsten added, “During that time, I scaled back on almost all my volunteer work.” Her blog is called Consider It Joy (kirstenloy.com). It started as a way for her to chronicle the journey. “And it continues to spread hope and joy to those going through trials of any kind,” she offered. They cherish attending their sons’ soccer and lacrosse games. Greg also volunteers for the Poway Boys Soccer Boosters and constructs props for Grad Nite. “We’re a family of faith,” added Kirsten, and they stay involved with community outreach through Redemption Church. Here at home, and abroad, Kirsten considers it a joy to be at the forefront of teen support. 

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Historical Fashion Exhibit

Poway High School student Audrey Ellis recently presented her senior project museum exhibition, Edwardian Fashion From the Bottom Up, in the Nelson House in Poway. The exhibit explored changes in women’s lives at the turn of the 20th century through a look at Edwardian fashion. Audrey determined the exhibit content and chose clothing from the Poway Historical and Memorial Society collection to place in her display, as well as a tableau that demonstrated the progress of women’s lives as emancipation came alive. Audrey has been a junior volunteer at the Nelson House, located in the Poway Historical Park, since 2014. Her love of fashion and her interest in women’s history inspired her to research the daily lives of women in Poway and San Diego to understand their challenges and events that influenced their world. She will attend University of California, Santa Cruz in the fall. To learn more visit www.powayhistoricalsociety.org.

Emergency Survival Fair

The Poway Emergency Survival Fair will be held on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Old Poway Park. The fair is a community-driven event to connect residents with public and private organizations to better prepare the community for an emergency. Visit booths staffed by organizations that provide emergency planning and assistance to Poway residents and learn how they can assist families in the development of unique survival plans. Find out what to do if basic services such as water, gas, electricity, or telephones are cut off as well. Organizations participating in the fair are donating emergency preparedness items for free drawings every half hour, including FRS radios, emergency 72-hour kits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. The Emergency Survival Fair is sponsored by the nonprofit Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps, which works to complement the City of Poway Emergency Operations Plan through a grassroots communication network of neighbors. For more information visit www.powaynec.com.

Victorian Day in the Garden

Poway Historical and Memorial Society (PMHS) hosted its Victorian Day in the Garden recently for those particularly interested in plants, gardening, butterflies, bees, or Victoriana. Due to rainy weather on the planned day of the event, the show went on the following week in an indoor facility across from Old Poway Park. The event featured refreshments, several guest speakers, a workshop for children, and booths selling crafts, Victoriana items, fine china, jewelry, and more. Visitors were greeted by Moki the raven, ambassador for Project Wildlife. Councilman Jim Cunningham won the raffle for the traditional log cabin quilt created for PMHS by Rancho Bernardo quilter Petra Koelhoffer. The mission of PMHS is to bring together people interested in collecting and preserving artifacts and information of historical value pertaining to Poway and surrounding areas in order to share the heritage of the Poway community with future generations. Painted Rock Volunteer Awarded Honors

Local resident Stan Kim has been awarded the two highest honors by Painted Rock Elementary School, where he has been a parent and volunteer for 10 years. He received the Volunteer of the Year award, selected by the teachers and staff of the school, and the Golden Oak Award, the highest service award the PTA can bestow. The latter is not given out every year, but only when merited. Never in the history of the school have both awards been given to the same individual. Stan started the Dad’s Club, “Lunch with Dads Week,” and Dads Rock the Classroom at Painted Rock. He helps students learn photography, coaches third graders for the annual Rotary Track Meet, started a public relations scholarship program for promoting fifth grade ESL students, and, finally, ran and emceed talent shows throughout the years. “Volunteering is really a school culture at Painted Rock,” said Stan. “My wife Cindy and I are very lucky and thankful to be part of this incredible group of volunteers, teachers, and staff.”

Small Business of the Year

Assemblymember Brian Maienschein recently recognized Bernardo Winery and its owners, Ross Rizzo, Jr. and Veronica HallRizzo, as the 2016 Small Business of the Year for the 77th Assembly District for their support of the local community and commitment to customer service. “Small businesses like Bernardo Winery are the backbone of California’s economy,” said Maienschein. “Bernardo Winery has created employment opportunities for local residents and has a longstanding tradition of great service to our community.” Established in 1889, Bernardo Winery is one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in California. Nestled in the inland valleys of San Diego County and family-owned and operated since 1927, the winery’s ownership and staff are passionate about maintaining the beautifully nostalgic winery, sharing family traditions, and serving delicious wine. “We are honored to receive the Small Business of the Year award,” said Rizzo, Jr. “Bernardo Winery is committed to our local community, and we strive to give customers the best service possible while creating memorable experiences every day.”

Get Ready for Red Shoe Day

San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Poway Days Parade Singer Chosen

With only a couple years of experience singing on stage, Easha Ashraf will perform for the largest audience in her young life at the 2016 Poway Days Parade this September. Once the Valley Elementary School fifth grader came to its attention, the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps was quick to give her a coveted and well-recognized responsibility: singing the national anthem that kicks off the parade. “It pleases us very much to be able to feature this remarkable young girl. She makes Poway proud,” said Pauline Getz, Parade Chair and President of the Rotary Club. In line with the parade’s literacy theme, Easha is an avid reader and enjoys writing. She has sung in the national anthem competition since 2014, and also sang the anthem at the Cinco de Mayo Annual Poway Trail Run on May 7. She will attend Meadowbrook Middle School in the fall. Celebrating 10 Years in Business photos by Lee Bertrand Photography and Fine Art

Floaties Swim School and Poway Sushi Lounge partnered to host a 10-year anniversary party in mid-April as a thank you to the community and patrons who have supported the businesses since their inception. The fun-filled event included giant-sized board games, a dunk tank, face painting, food, a raffle, and live music. “It’s been a pleasure to not only do business with Sushi Lounge over the last 10 years but to have created lifelong friendships,” said Karyn Morrill, owner of Floaties Swim School. “We are so thankful to the Poway community for their unwavering support over the past 10 years and are proud of the relationships we’ve built with our neighboring businesses,” added Katie Rooney, co-owner of Poway Sushi Lounge. Both businesses prioritize making a positive impact within their community by continually sponsoring local schools and youth sport organizations.

14th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup

I Love a Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) 14th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup drew a wide array of environmentally minded volunteers to 110 sites around the county. Over 6,000 volunteers removed 150,000 pounds of litter from the San Diego landscape during the three-hour event. Over three quarters of the sites were focused on inland areas, including canyons, waterways, and street sweeps. Families from Country Montessori School (CMS) joined a 92064 cleanup site at Poway Community Park. A team of 11 elementary school students created the design for CMS cleanup t-shirts. After the cleanup, PTC Chair Nadia Salas remarked on how excited the students were about the opportunity to make a difference in the community. ILACSD was founded in 1954 as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee. Ever since then, the organization grown in scope and impact to become an influential advocate for local sustainability. They offer regular beach and inland cleanup events. Learn more at www.cleansd.org.

K and Jamie relieved me of all the stress of the selling process because they were very professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. I usually sent emails in the evening, often fairly late, and was often surprised to get immediate responses. Finally, this wasn’t my first rodeo; it was my fifth and my best experience so far. Cynthia Elizondo Halcyon Real Estate Services

“YOUR EXPERT AGENT IN THE POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT!” In 1993, Cynthia Elizondo earned her M.B.A. in International Business. She has used the knowledge she gained to start several successful entrepreneurial endeavors, but her true passion has always lain with real estate. So, when she was presented with the opportunity to follow that dream, she jumped at the chance and never looked back. Cynthia began working with Halcyon Real Estate Services so that she could help others achieve their dreams of buying and selling their first home, investment property, or simply take the next step on their journey in real estate. A certified negotiation expert, Cynthia knows exactly what it takes to make a successful deal. When representing buyers, Cynthia takes the time to learn exactly what they are looking for in a home, as well as what price they are comfortable with, in order to match them with their ideal property. When representing sellers, she thinks outside the box to negotiate deals with potential buyers, creating a win-win situation for both parties. Cynthia’s expertise especially lies with the residential areas that make up the Poway Unified School District. Growing up in Northern California, Cynthia ultimately found her dream home here in North County, where she raised two children who attended PUSD schools for over 15 years. Utilizing her familiarity with the school district and all it has to offer, Cynthia is able to provide her clients with an extensive knowledge of various schools. Ultimately, she can help clients find a home within the boundaries of the school best suited for them and their children. Following her belief that volunteerism makes for a strong community, Cynthia serves on the board of directors for the Poway Senior Center and the Poway Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers with Soroptimist International of Poway and Poway Real Estate Professionals. As a devout Catholic, Cynthia is also an active member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where her husband serves as a deacon. In addition to English, Cynthia is also fluent in Spanish and French. And if you speak the language of wine, she is always happy to regale you with stories of being raised in the Napa Valley.

The event was co-chaired by SIRB club members Pam Warnock and Ginny Brown. The main purpose of the annual event is to raise funds to provide a safe and supportive living environment for battered women and their children. Since 1996, the Poway and Rancho Bernardo clubs have helped over 51 mothers and 115 children reclaim their lives. After the success of last year’s event, the clubs were able to add another apartment to the Transitional Housing Program for women moving away from dependency and abuse. :::: HEALTHY SMILES

Successful treatment of periodontal disease appears to slow progression of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown an association between periodontal disease and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A new observation study out of Sweden by Dr. Holmlund of Uppsala University breaks ground in showing for the first time that among patients who seek treatment for periodontal disease, treatment responders have on average a 28 percent lower risk of fatal or non-fatal MI, stroke, or heart failure than non-responders. Commonly referred to as gum disease, periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease caused when bacteria in plaque below the gum line leads to swelling, irritation, and possibly receding gums and tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to many chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. Despite its prevalence, periodontal disease is hardly ever discussed, resulting in a lack of urgency for people to properly care for their gums. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) urges all Americans to “Love the gums you’re with” and take better care of their gums by adopting simple improvements to oral hygiene. To aid in the prevention of periodontal disease, the AAP recommends brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and discussing periodontal health with a dental professional.

:::: TITAN INSIDER by KIENAN MORRISSEY special to 92064 Magazine

Dodging Through School

W

ith an interesting twist to the normal school activities, this year Poway High School hosted a student dodgeball game from May 16 through 20. The tournament was open sign-up for all students that attend PHS, until 16 teams of eight were filled. Once the tournament began, the games were played in the gym on the basketball court, with two games at a time playing half court. The tournament was limited to the 16 teams, with no substitutes, meaning only the 128 students who got health waivers signed were able to participate. The final two teams played a full-court game on May 20.

Thanks to Ben Decker, the ASB (Associated Student Body) member who planned the tournament, the competitive game of dodgeball made its way to Poway. Before the event, Ben shared, “I am really glad I got the opportunity to plan the event, and I invested a lot of time and work into it. I even made a twitter account anyone can follow @PowayDodgeball to keep up with the event. I hope everyone enjoys the tournament and my work pays off.” “I’m really excited to go play with and against my friends in the tournament, I know my team and we will not disappoint,” Team Captain Kobe Brown said.

After weeks of great anticipation for the tournament, Poway students were excited to see the outcome of the intriguing new event on campus – and, some hoped, a new campus tradition. The winning team was a group of baseball players: Blake Wagenseller, Braeden Bentley, Clayton Zollmann, Joe Murray, Ryan Gagliano, Ryan Ryskamp, Sloan Blanscet, and Zane Thomas. ¢

New Community Health Center

POWAY CENTER TO PROVIDE HEALTHCARE FOR 7,500 RESIDENTS

P

oway’s first community health center recently had its groundbreaking ceremony. The Gold Family Health Center will help provide necessary services for thousands of low-income residents in Poway and the surrounding communities every year. In the Poway area, 5,300 people live with incomes below the federal poverty level and 12,250 residents ages 18 to 65 are uninsured. The 8,500-square-foot health center will help fill these voids and provide services ranging from primary care to lab services to managing illness. It will be created by Neighborhood Healthcare, an organization that boasts over 45 years of service at 10 sites throughout San Diego and Riverside counties, helping more than 66,000 patients each year. The project plans were displayed at the ceremony, along with remarks from several speakers discussing the history behind the project and the future of Poway. Speakers included Alan Gold, lifelong Poway

resident and major donor and advocate for this initiative; Tracy Ream, CEO at Neighborhood Healthcare; Frank Bierne, COO at Palomar Health; Councilmember Dave Grosch, City of Poway; Cathy Peterson, Board Chair of the Poway Chamber of Commerce; and Johnny Watson, Neighborhood Healthcare Board President. Community health centers across the country serve neighbors in need but also benefit the entire community by reducing income and ethnic health disparities nationwide, even in the poorest and most challenged communities; producing $24 billion in annual health system savings; reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to emergency rooms; and providing a system of preventive medicine that patients use regularly, thereby improving health outcomes. :::: IN OUR OWN BACKYARD

THE PERFECT

PICNIC

Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL

W

hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.

LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org

MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us

OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the mission church, which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org

Poway Valley Garden Club Show 38TH ANNUAL STANDARD FLOWER SHOW A SUCCESS

T

he Poway Valley Garden Club recently held their 38th Annual Standard Flower Show at Old Poway Park. The show included a variety of horticultural entries, floral designs, table artistry designs, special educational exhibits, school garden activities, and a plant sale. Horticultural entries were submitted by amateur gardeners and owners of flower gardens, vegetable and fruit gardens, and container gardens. Irises, orchids, geraniums, poppies, roses, flowering tree branches, cacti, and succulents were among those showcased in the flower displays, while fruit entries included lemons, kumquats, loquats,

and mulberries. Several special exhibits were also highlighted, including Native Pollinators, a bee exhibit from Poway Valley Garden Club member Ellen Dillion which focused on the necessity of pollinators, the decline in bee populations, and possible solutions. The exhibit received the first place award and a Flower Show Educational Award. The four elementary school gardens that comprise the Poway Valley Garden Club

Youth Club introduced themselves to the public as well. Chaparral Elementary, Rolling Hills Elementary, Innovations Academy, and Painted Rock Elementary each presented an informational board with details about their gardens as well as activities that the students participate in at school. Chair of Publicity Inge Ramirez expressed the club’s gratitude to the City of Poway for supporting the club from the beginning. They would also like to thank the community of Poway, Boy Scout Troop 688 of Poway/Rancho Bernardo San DiegoImperial Council, the Women’s Club of Poway, and the staff at Old Poway Park for helping make the show such a success. :::: REAL ESTATE WATCH

The Selling and Buying Season Is Upon Us by DAN CONWAY

T

he California Association of Realtors (CAR) wrote, “California’s housing market is expected to improve in 2016, but a shortage of available inventory and continuing high costs are expected to limit the improvement. According to CAR’s 2016 California Housing Market Forecast, existing home sales are expected to rise in 2016 by 6.3% over 2015’s expected total.” Home prices are also expected to rise this year, although at a slower rate than last year due to a still-tight inventory supply. Bottom line: get on the interest list of a community that interests you and be ready to get qualified ahead of time. That way, when you find the right fit, you are ready to go. Realtor.com lists San Diego among the nation’s 10 hottest markets, based on the company’s listing data. It was number three on their list of real estate markets to watch in 2016. San Diego’s spot as one of the top housing markets is the result of a limited supply of homes for sale and an increased demand. Look for more construction of single-family and multifamily residences this year. While supply of the mid-level homes inventory is still low, look for some relief this year. “California’s housing market is moving in the right direction as we enter the spring home-buying season, but sales growth will likely be isolated in areas where inventory is more abundant and housing affordability is less of an issue,” said CAR President Pat “Ziggy” Zicarelli.
