Let’s Rock On!

A

Derrick Breaux Publisher

s many of you know, I spent a great deal of my childhood in Texas. I have fond memories of family evenings with a close friend digging into classic country and southern rock songs with nothing more than his deep voice, guitar, and love of entertaining. He was always reluctant to play at first, but after the required nudges, he coincidentally would have his guitar in the truck and treat everyone to a wonderful experience that is hard to match. My wife and I recently opened the door to music in the Breaux household by purchasing a guitar for our son and a piano for our youngest daughter. Each kid chose their own instrument. Microphones, amps, and lots of wires later, we were geared up for them to make some music. So, we found a great music instructor for weekly lessons. It was slow-going at first. While I tried offering words of wisdom (as if I had a clue) about the learning curve and ultimate satisfaction of completing their first song, our kids reluctantly pushed on. Then it happened. Our son learned the chords and vocals to an entire song – Justin Beiber’s Love Yourself. He began playing it more. He tested it out in front of his friends, eventually graduating to open mic nights at local eateries, as well as small festival performances set up by his instructor. Not wanting to be a one-song performer, my son is pushing hard to learn more songs for future shows. I think he’s caught the performing bug. Our daughter is close behind, even though she is still a little unsure about the performance part. Taking things one step further, I used an iPad (and more wires) to turn our living room into a karaoke studio. Okay, so I just made that sound better than it really is, but it’s a cool setup nonetheless. What my wife and I witnessed after was nothing short of amazing. Our kids and their friends have been singing just about every song you can think of. They sing some seriously, while others are simply for kicks. The most important thing is that they are laughing, dancing, and having a great time. I’m glad we left our bubble and opened a new opportunity for them. Even if the ultimate outcome is just for them to be able to pick up an instrument and make close friends and family feel good on a relaxing evening in the backyard – it’s worth it. Thanks for reading 92064 Magazine. Be sure to reach out to our advertising partners and let them know you saw them in the magazine.

Sun Safety

POWAY RESIDENT ADVOCATES FOR SKIN PROTECTION

M

eadowbrook Middle School eighth grader Kaitlyn Chan’s nonprofit organization, SunSafety for Schools, is making big strides in the world of skin health by recently completing its first major project. Eight months ago, Kaitlyn identified a need within the Escondido Union School District and has since worked tirelessly to help raise money for Central Elementary School to purchase a shade structure for its playground. Through proceeds from working street fairs, private donations, and other fundraising events, SunSafety for Schools was able to present a $12,500 check to the district to help fund the installation of a permanent shade structure at Central Elementary. “Achieving this goal is a great

feeling!” Kaitlyn said. “It pushes me to start the next project and the next school.” Kaitlyn started SunSafety for Schools in 2015 after noticing the value of sunshades and realizing that not all school playgrounds are equipped to keep children protected from the sun. After gaining both federal and

state agency approvals to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Kaitlyn set out to set up fundraising activities to help underprivileged schools obtain the equipment they need to keep their students safe from the sun. “Having an idea is great, but the biggest lesson I learned is that communicating a cause to convince others to donate money is not easy and requires persistence,” she said. Kaitlyn also works to advocate for sun safety education by going into classrooms and speaking to elementaryaged children about the importance of physical barriers in protecting them from excess sun exposure and high heat. F

or the last two years, Mason Kern has been a teen correspondent with the San Diego Living television program airing on XETV. Mason appears monthly as “The Sports Watchdog,” a title he created himself. “This is my own brand that I’m cultivating in my TV work, as well as my syndicated editorial pieces, radio interviews, podcast interviews with professional athletes, and other media projects. Given how much of a sports fanatic I am, coupled with my direct intention for my future career to be in the sports broadcasting field, I knew that ‘The Sports Watchdog’ brand and label would reflect my work and serve me well in the future,” explained Mason. He has delivered sports reports with radio programs across the United States, and his syndicated editorial and podcast work has run with multiple publishers and has been distributed on platforms nationwide. A senior at Poway High School, Mason also serves as editor of the sports page for the school newspaper and as the production manager of a special athletics segment for the school’s video news broadcast. It comes as no surprise that this Honor Roll student’s favorite classes are journalism and broadcast journalism. Mason also

recently attended the Cronkite Sports Broadcasting Camp at Arizona State University. “I lived in a dorm for two weeks and participated in a highly immersive program that taught me a great deal both behind and in front of the camera,” stated Mason. Mason is an accomplished athlete “I LIVED IN A DORM FOR TWO himself. He plays club soccer with the Poway WEEKS AND PARTICIPATED IN A Vaqueros and with the HIGHLY IMMERSIVE PROGRAM varsity team at Poway High. “I’ve played recreational THAT TAUGHT ME A GREAT and club soccer in Poway DEAL BOTH BEHIND AND IN for as long as I can remember. I started out FRONT OF THE CAMERA." when I was four years old, playing at North County Soccer Park. I’ve also played basketball at a recreational level for many years,” said Mason. According to him, the high intensity action of both soccer and basketball captivated him as a young child and continue to do so to this day. Looking to the future, Mason plans to attend a four-year university and continue his pursuit of a career in sports broadcast journalism. “I’m looking forward to it all – my experience at the Cronkite School this past summer gave me a taste of what college life will be like, and I’m excited for it! I’m also excited to be that much closer to my dream of becoming a working sports broadcaster and writer,” revealed Mason. 

Honoring a Hometown Hero

TONY GWYNN MEMORIAL PROJECT NEARS FUNDRAISING GOAL

T

he City of Poway recently announced that the campaign to build a community memorial honoring Poway’s “Hometown Hero” Tony Gwynn is nearing its fundraising goal. The centerpiece of the memorial, located at the edge of the Lake Poway baseball field, is a 10-foot tall bronze statue of Tony. The statue itself has been fully funded through community donations, but the campaign is still actively seeking an additional $20,000 to complete the surrounding plaza and donor recognition wall. The campaign has raised just over $166,000 so far. Tony Gwynn is widely acknowledged as the greatest San Diego Padres player in the team’s history and one of the best Major League Baseball hitters of his time. The Poway memorial aims to reflect, however, more than his athletic accomplishments – it portrays Tony as a father, friend, and celebrated community member. Over his lifetime, he was honored with the Roberto Clemente, Lou Gehrig, and Branch Rickey Awards for his sportsmanship, philanthropy, and exceptional community service. His affection for Poway

and San Diego led him to remain with the Padres throughout his 20-year Major League Baseball career. After his retirement, he coached baseball at his alma mater, San Diego State University. The memorial is expected to be completed in April. For more information or to donate go to www.crowdrise.com/tonygwynn. ¢

ary Shepardson’s connection to Poway goes back a long way. Her parents – who met at Camp Roberts in Northern California during World War II – relocated the family to Southern California when the war was over in pursuit of work in the farming industry. In 1949, shortly before Mary’s fourth birthday, the Shepardsons settled in Poway – a place in which Mary has resided ever since. “I’ve lived in Poway most of my life and have seen it change from a small town of about 300 people to a thriving city of nearly 50,000,” said Mary. “We have parks and restaurants and shopping and a host of amenities. We don’t have to travel many miles to reach a hospital and our fire and paramedic crews are outstanding.” With a love for her community and a passion for history, Mary has volunteered for the Poway Historical and Memorial Society for a long time. “When Poway Historical and Memorial Society was formed in 1964, my parents and I were all charter members,” she recalled. “I think there are only two or three of us surviving!” Mary started out researching and writing articles about Poway history and now she helps to curate the Historical Society’s digital archives, produce its quarterly newsletter, and even maintain its Facebook page. Mary’s career path began with selling real estate, primarily in the Poway area. “From there I moved to writing and editing newspapers and magazines, including special publications in the horse industry and San Diego County Society and Design Magazine,” explained Mary, whose first writing job included a high school sports column for the 16 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • January | February 2017

Poway News-Chieftain in 1962. “In late 2015, I began writing ‘Then and Now,’ a column about Poway history, also for the Poway News-Chieftain.” Following her writing career, Mary worked 25 years for Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, where she was director of publications. Perhaps Mary’s most interesting career endeavor was serving on the Poway City Council for six years and serving as Poway’s first woman mayor from April 1982 to April 1983. “The years were interesting, challenging, and rewarding,” remembered Mary. “As a new city, we had to bring together services that had been provided by several local districts (water, sewer, fire, parks), the sheriff’s department and California Highway Patrol. Even more challenging was taking over functions such as the planning and building departments that had been handled miles away by the County of San Diego. We had to develop a new General Plan for the City.” Although she is now retired, Mary remains an avid supporter of her beloved community. “I’m on the City of Poway’s Trails and Open Space Advisory Board, of which I’ve been a member since the City established it while I was still on the council,” said Mary. “What those of us who live here now need to do is be vigilant about keeping Poway ‘The City in the Country,’ and a special place to live.” 

Old Winery Estates of Poway for the past 15 ½ years. They love this quiet neighborhood, with its hiking trails and proximity to the Bernardo Winery. Bob Ulrich has owned Quest-Rep, Inc., an electronics manufacturer’s rep company, since 1986. His wife Joy worked in office administration and the restaurant business until their

first son Brandon was born. She has been a stay-at-home mom to sons Brandon and Ryan, now 16 and 14, ever since. Brandon is a junior at Poway High School (PHS), where he is on the varsity golf team. He devotes much time to practice and lessons all year long. Ryan is a freshman who’s been playing travel ball with San Diego Crush Baseball for over two years, with a goal of making the team at PHS. Brandon volunteers as a homework helper for fifth grade students at Chaparral Elementary School (CES), and both boys have helped with elementary and middle school foundation events throughout their schooling years. The boys’ parents are also busy on the volunteer front. When the boys were younger, Bob offered his time to Poway National Little League. Joy was secretary for two years and president for another two of the Chaparral Educational Foundation. She arranged many fundraisers for CES, including helping the school get a second computer lab. Joy became even busier once the boys got to Twin Peaks Middle, serving as president of the foundation for three years. She also co-chaired the Twin Peaks garage sale for three years and co-chaired their auction for two. Joy is currently donation coordinator for the Poway Titan Baseball Booster’s upcoming casino night, and the dinner and auction in January. The California State PTA took notice of Joy’s involvement, giving her an Honorary Service Award this past spring. “Our family loves that we are able to go anywhere in the community and always run into people we know!” Bob and Joy shared. They have traveled through Canada, Mexico, the San Juan Islands, and all over the Western United States on their Harleys. 

FROM THE ORAL SURGEON

Wise Words About Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t usually happen. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there may be present or future problems. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid-teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Once it is decided that wisdom teeth need to be removed, the patient can elect to have them removed all at once or one or two at a time. While you do not need to remove all wisdom teeth at the same time, doing so can reduce the overall recuperation time since the patient will only have to recover once versus multiple times. Depending on the complexity of the extractions, surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, where the patient is fully awake; under general anesthesia, fully asleep; or with light sedation combined with local anesthesia.

After surgery, it is important to remember the DOs and DON’Ts of recovery: DO: • Rest the day of and day after surgery; plan on half-speed the third day. • Place ice on jaws for 72 hours as directed. • Have plenty of soft foods in the fridge. DON’T: • Smoke, dip, or chew tobacco. • Use drinking straws. • Use alcohol or mouthwash. • Lift, bend, strain, or play sports. All DON’Ts apply for seven days post-surgery.

Be Wi s e A b ou t You r Wi s d om T ee t h Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins offer a full scope of oral and facial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to facial trauma reconstruction and facial cosmetic surgery.

Did You Know? The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons suggests timely removal of wisdom teeth during the teenage years. This is an ideal opportunity to remove impacted and unerupted teeth.

2016 Speak Up Survey The 2016 Speak Up Survey is open for students, parents, educators, and community members through Jan. 13, 2017. Poway Unified School District elementary, middle, and high schools are among the 30,000 schools that have utilized the annual survey’s data to improve learning since the project’s founding in 2003. The survey is run by Project Tomorrow and has three main objectives: to help schools and districts listen to and act upon stakeholders’ ideas; to let education stakeholders, especially students, have a voice in local and national policies and programs; and to stimulate local discussions about the use of technology in education. Findings from the 2015 data gave a comprehensive snapshot of the state of technology in education. Nationwide, 84 percent of school principals believe effective use of technology in instruction is important for student success, and half of administrators say that digital content is already leading to positive results. To take the survey or learn more visit www.speakup4schools.org/ speakup2016.

PowPAC, Poway’s community theater, will present Mothers and Sons this winter. The play, written by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally, tells the story of a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the apartment of her late son’s partner. Revisiting her past and daring to face how society has changed around her, the story explores the evolving definition of family and the healing power of forgiveness. The show opens on Friday, Jan. 27 and runs for five weekends, closing Sunday, Feb. 26. PowPAC will also be holding auditions for its spring production of Over the Tavern on Jan. 30 and 31 at 7 p.m. Children ages 12 to 16 are especially encouraged to audition. C O M PA N Y P R O F I L E

B E H I N D PAG E S Meet the

Team

Producing six issues of 14 community magazines per year is no easy feat. Our goal from the very beginning has been to create local magazines with content that people actually want to read. Luckily for us, we have an all-star squad that works together to make this vision a reality. Behind each issue is our close-knit team – editors who collect the stories, production leaders who work with our valued advertisers, photographers who capture the perfect moment, and graphic designers who make it all look pretty. And while we have different personal interests, all of us here at ZCode have one thing in common: we are passionate about what makes each of these North County communities so special. It’s because of you that we do what we do. Thank you for inviting us into your home and being a loyal reader of 92064 Magazine. We look forward to bringing you exciting community news for many more years to come.

DERRICK BREAUX | Publisher I’ve always found it rewarding to build things. I like the process just as much as I enjoy the end result. It’s great to see each issue of the magazines grow from concept to hard copy. My typical day at the office consists of interacting closely with the editorial, production, graphics, and sales teams.

LAINEY KRAL | Associate Editor I joined the phenomenal ZCode team two years ago, and the best part of my job is the opportunity to talk to all of you. I love learning about the individuals, families, and organizations that make our communities so special. A North County native currently living in North Park, I spend my weekends hanging out with friends and family, diving into fantasy novels, and riding other people’s horses.

RANDI CANTRELL | Associate Editor Like a lot of my fellow ZCoders, I was born and raised in San Diego. I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary and my second anniversary of working on the ZCode team. You can find me huddled over the latest edits or planning out our upcoming issues with one of my color-coded spreadsheets. Out of the office, I’m usually searching for that perfect cup of coffee, lifting heavy stuff at the gym, reading a good book, or running interference between my dog and cat, whose friendship is still a work-in-progress thing.

SHYANNE LOPEZ | Associate Editor Born in Los Angeles and raised in Murrieta, I’m somewhat of a newcomer to San Diego. Luckily, joining the fantastic team of creatives at ZCode has really allowed me to learn and love so much about this beautiful city I now call home. When not in the office searching for cool stories and people to feature, I can be found tending my succulent garden, “discovering” a new brewery, or taking selfies with my dog.

SAMANTHA EDWARDS | Editorial Assistant I was born and raised in North County San Diego and after spending five years away, I don’t think I’ll ever be leaving again! It has been a dream come true for me to join the ZCode team. In the office you can find me furiously typing away or sifting through piles of paper proofs. Outside of the office I’m usually baking, writing, drinking wine, walking my dog, or spending time with family and friends.

JESSICA BREAUX | Director of Business Development I am a native San Diegan and I couldn’t imagine working, playing, and raising my family anywhere else. I spend most of my evenings and weekends being a soccer mom of three. At the ZCode office one can usually find me juggling lots, just as I do at home. If I’m not at the office pushing paperwork you will find me out networking in our communities.

MARIA FERNANDEZ | Graphic Designer I was born and raised in Mexico where I was surrounded by the love of my big family and friends. Before moving to San Diego I lived in Washington state where I worked at JWT Inside and the University of Washington. I am passionate about graphic design, and I love to connect with the community through my design. It’s a pleasure to be doing what I love at ZCode, a place that has become an extension of my family. I like spending time with my family, hiking, reading, and loud laughter.

SHARI CANETE | Graphic Designer I have strong ties to Canada, but San Diego has always been my home. And I feel very fortunate to be part of the ZCode family. In the office, I’m the one clacking away on the keyboard trying to find the perfect color combo. Out of the office, I’m obsessing over ancient alien theories, running madly outdoors, enjoying San Diego cuisine, or taking my big fur-baby on adventures around the neighborhood. And I’m a huge coffee fiend.

HEATHER LOCKWOOD | Production Coordinator I am a mother to three wonderful children, and a wife to the love of my life of 20 years, with over 10 pets – dogs, cats, guinea pig, and a bird. In my free time, I enjoy making and fixing jewelry for friends and family. I’m known in the office as “Lockwood” and can usually be found sending emails and being the liaison between our marketing and graphics departments. I love seeing the magazines printed knowing I helped make it happen.

MONICA COGGER | Senior Account Executive Originally from the Midwest, San Diego has been our home since 2003. My husband John has kept me entertained, laughing, and in love for the last 17 years. We have three kids whom I often refer to as “Our Happy Trio.” At ZCode, I enjoy meeting and connecting with our community. I love my job and our magazines! Outside of work, you’d find me watching our kids’ volleyball games, basketball games, and cello performances. As a family, we love going to the beach, spending time with my parents in Rancho Bernardo, quick getaways to Palm Springs, and catching up with friends. I also enjoy CrossFit and stand-up paddleboarding — as often as I can fit either in.

ZEENA GREGG | Photographer I own Zeena Gregg Photography and specialize in high school senior portraits and families. When I’m not working, you can find me reading, working on a home improvement project, or kayaking and paddleboarding down at Mission Bay. As a photographer for ZCode, I love meeting and photographing so many wonderful families, students and individuals in our neighborhood (Rancho Peñasquitos) and surrounding communities.

WHAT DOES AAUW STAND FOR? American Association of University Women. IS AAUW A NATIONWIDE ORGANIZATION? Yes, AAUW is a national organization with approximately 170,000 members that span virtual and local communities worldwide. The national website is www.aauw.org.

AAUW

CAN YOU GIVE US SOME OF THE HISTORY BEHIND THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? The Rancho Bernardo Branch had already been formed at the time, but there was a cadre of women who saw the need to have another branch in Poway. They added Peñasquitos to widen the area so they could look for women in those communities. The branch is celebrating its 45th birthday this year! HOW HAS THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH DEVELOPED OVER THE YEARS? When the branch started in 1971, we were all in our late twenties and had

just graduated from college with new families and new jobs. All of us saw the value of getting together once a month to hear different speakers and socialize with other women who had bright ideas and the desire to do something for the community. We started out giving a small scholarship to graduating seniors at the high schools in the Poway Unified School District. Now each year we give three Re-Entry Women’s Scholarships to women who have decided to go back to college and finish their degree. WHAT IS AAUW’S OVERALL MISSION? AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

WHICH COMMUNITIES DOES THE POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS BRANCH SERVE? The Poway-Peñasquitos Branch serves Poway and Rancho Peñasquitos, however, we welcome members from the surrounding communities. WHAT PROGRAMS AND SERVICES DOES THE BRANCH PROVIDE? Our branch has a general meeting once a month with speakers discussing current politics, social change, education, and various stimulating topics. We have had programs over the years that reach out to the community to help the working woman learn about new job opportunities and find ways to

balance her busy life. Our branch also has many interest groups that cater to the needs of the members of the branch. We have three book clubs, a hiking group, and a gardening group, as well as a bridge and a travel group. This year we are starting a new group called Great Decisions, which is a nationwide discussion group addressing the social and political problems of the world. DO YOU HOLD EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR? Our branch will be holding its 20th Annual Cover to Cover fundraiser May 13, 2017 at the Maderas Golf Club. Guests listen to authors share about their books and their writing processes, and take part in a silent auction and opportunity basket drawing. The money raised from this event

helps sponsor sixth to eighth grade girls for Tech Trek and three Re-entry Women’s Scholarships. WHAT COMMUNITIES DO YOUR MEMBERS HAIL FROM? One third of our 117 members are from Poway, a third from Peñasquitos, and the rest from the surrounding communities of Scripps Ranch, Escondido, Valley Center, Ramona, Carmel Valley, Rancho Bernardo, and Santaluz. DOES THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH HAVE ANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS? An exciting new development for our branch is the AAUW partnership with San Diego Miramar College. AAUW has

partnerships with many campuses across San Diego County, and San Diego Miramar College is the most recent addition. The PowayPeñasquitos Branch recently held a voter registration event on campus and is planning future events to benefit the students at San Diego Miramar College. HOW CAN SOMEONE GO ABOUT JOINING THE POWAYPEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? Membership is open to anyone holding an associate’s (or equivalent, e.g. RN), bachelor’s, or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The annual dues include membership to the national AAUW organization, AAUW California, and the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch. Any

and receive a free e-student membership. Upon graduation, e-student affiliates receive a free one-year membership to AAUW as a graduation gift. Undergraduates can also join the PowayPeñasquitos Branch and AAUW California. Graduate students receive a discounted national rate for the first year only and can also

join California AAUW and the Poway-Peñasquitos Branch. WHEN AND WHERE DOES THE BRANCH MEET? ARE MEETINGS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC? Our branch meets at the Ranch Bernardo Swim and Tennis Club on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public. To find out about the program for the month go to our website: www.powayarea-ca.aauw.net. WHY ARE ORGANIZATIONS LIKE AAUW IMPORTANT FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES?

AT-A-GLANCE President

Mission-based organizations like AAUW help educate the public and contribute to the community. AAUW local programs benefit Tech Trek sponsorships and scholarships for local students. AAUW nationally brings awareness of issues such as unequal pay for women, violence against women, sexual assault in the military, worklife balance, and access to

healthcare. AAUW programs encourage women to aim for roles in student government, boardrooms, U.S. Congress, and the White House. AAUW has research and online tools to advocate for work-life balance, urge members of Congress to protect fair pay, or teach recent grads to negotiate their first salaries in programs such as Work Smart and Start Smart. HOW CAN SOMEONE CONTRIBUTE TO THE MISSION OF THE POWAY-PEÑASQUITOS BRANCH? The best way to contribute is to join us in our mission to advance equity for women and girls. You can join the branch and participate in our mission-based activities and interest groups or make a financial contribution directly to AAUW. The AAUW email address is connect@aauw.org. A Scout’s Honor Former Eagle Scout Ben Neill Is Passionate About Giving Back to the Boy Scouts of America by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

B

en Neill’s connection to the Boy Scouts goes back a long way. Like his father, his two brothers and four cousins, Ben was a Boy Scout during his youth and earned the Eagle Scout award – the highest recognition in Boy Scouts. “My involvement in Scouting started as a family tradition,” recalled Ben, whose father still volunteers with the Boy Scouts in Kansas. “When my oldest son came home from school with a flyer about Cub Scouts, I let him decide if he wanted to join. When he joined, I was pleased, and it was natural that I volunteer to help the Scouts.” Years later, Ben is still an avid volunteer for the Boy Scouts. “I am currently the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 625 and have been in that position for the past two years,” said Ben. “Before being Scoutmaster, I was the Cubmaster for nine years at Cub Scout Pack 608 meeting at Midland Elementary School.” Ben has also been program director for the Lake Poway Cub Scout Day Camp for three years and was the Friends of Scouting family coordinator for the Black Mountain District of Boy Scouts for two years. “In 2012, I was honored to be awarded the Boy Scout’s Black Mountain District Award of Merit,” shared Ben. Ben and his wife of 21 years, Julie, met at the University of Nebraska and have been living in Poway for the past 13 years. “After moving to the San Diego area from Midwest America, Poway was nice because it maintains the same Midwest values and sense of community,” described Ben. “I like the small town feel.” Together, the couple has raised two sons, Peter (age 18 – a senior at Poway High School) and Liam (age 14 – an eighth grader at Twin Peaks Middle School). Both boys have followed in their father’s footsteps by participating in Boy Scouts. “Personally, my wife and I are very proud of raising our two sons and for their accomplishments in Scouts, school, and life,” shared Ben. “Peter has earned the Eagle Scout award, and Liam is just two merit badges away from earning Eagle Scout.” When Ben isn’t busy volunteering for the Scouts, he can be found hiking, browsing the Old Poway Farmers Market, or enjoying music and food at the Company Pub or Mainstream Bar. “I also sing tenor in the choir at St. Gabriel Catholic Church,” he added. As for his biggest accomplishment in volunteering for the Scouts, Ben said, “It's seeing these young teenage boys grow up to be awesome well-rounded gentlemen and future leaders in our community.” 

TRUSTWORTHY CARE

Twin Peaks Dentistry Provides Patients with Expert Dental Care in a Warm and Comfortable Environment by JENNIFER FRAKES | photos by Zeena Gregg Photography

W

ith patients of all ages, Twin Peaks Dentistry is a true family dental practice. “We have many patients who grew up in the practice and are now bringing their children here. We treat our patients like family, and our dentists, hygienists, and staff are experienced and love what they do,” revealed Cindy Hartsog, office manager at Twin Peaks Dentistry. The office offers a wide range of services, including preventative and periodontal services, as well as emergency care, root canals, implant surgery, orthodontics, and cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. If a specialist is required for any reason, Twin Peaks Dentistry refers patients to the most qualified experts in the San Diego area. Twin Peaks Dentistry is a fixture in the community and the dentists, hygienists, and staff take pride in building long-term relationships with their patients. Dr. Mancuso established the practice in 1988 after moving back to Southern California from Colorado Springs. At the time, it was just Target and Twin Peaks Dentistry in the shopping center! In 2002, Dr. Robert Beavers joined the growing practice, bringing with him 20 years of experience and a kind, caring approach to dentistry. In 2016, after 35 years in practice, Dr. Mancuso decided to slow down, travel, and spend more time with his family. “We have a wonderful addition to the practice – Dr. Ziba Shirazi. She brings over

20 years of experience and is excited to get to know all the patients and continue the tradition of serving the community,” stated Hartsog. At Twin Peaks Dentistry, the focus is on trust and comfort. According to Hartsog, treatment is always explained prior to performing any procedure. A written treatment plan is provided to each patient, outlining the cost of the procedure and the estimated insurance coverage.

“We have many patients who grew up in the practice and are now bringing their children here. We treat our patients like family.” The office offers many payment options, including interest-free financing. “Ethics is a top priority for us, so we don’t recommend unnecessary treatments or bait and switch. We want to earn your respect and trust,” explained Hartsog. Ensuring the comfort of each and every patient

is also a priority for the practice. The environment in the office is warm, friendly, and relaxing. “Dentistry should be provided in a comfortable, gentle manner. When this happens, fear of going to the dentist disappears,” said Hartsog. For more information about Twin Peaks Dentistry, visit www.twinpeaksdentistry.com. ¢

ICE SKATING

THROUGH SAN DIEGO Discover One (Or More!) of San Diego’s Many Ice Skating Rinks This Winter by SAMANTHA EDWARDS

T

here aren’t many places in the world where you can lace up your skates and glide along the ice, palm trees swaying in the Pacific Ocean breeze, and then step off the rink and onto the beach in the middle of winter. Such is the case, however, at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado’s Skating by the Sea beachfront ice rink. Not only are you able to enjoy the sound of waves lapping at the shore but you will likely be swept up in the wintery cheer of it all – twinkling lights, festive music, and hot cocoa to start. But the Hotel Del isn’t the only place to ice skate this winter. Our beautiful city is home to several special holiday rinks as well as a number of rinks open yearround. Indoor ice rinks offer a variety of fun activities all year long, including public skating sessions, figure skating lessons, ice hockey leagues, broomball, ice polo, curling, and more. Some, like Escondido’s IcePlex, even have special winter-themed events to help get you in the holiday mood. While year-round rinks let you bundle up in thick socks and scarves even in the middle of July, San Diego’s holiday rinks are nothing short of magical. Viejas Outlet Ice Rink, for example, is a seasonal favorite and boasts the title of Southern California’s largest outdoor ice rink (even said to be bigger than the one at Rockefeller Center), where guests can enjoy shopping, entertainment, and a holiday water show all in one place. Poway’s Community Winter Festival features not only ice skating, but s’mores, fun decorations, and even sledding! Or you might check out the brand new outdoor rink at Point Loma’s Liberty Station, with all proceeds benefiting the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. How’s that for holiday spirit?

nterest rates are going up. It’s a fact. And when interest rates go, up, housing prices either level off or even drop. This means that if you have been toying with the idea of selling your home, this is the year to do it. You have probably heard that the best time to put a house on the market is in the spring, so hopefully you are starting to prepare now. You have probably Googled “how to prepare your home for sale” or “how to get top dollar for your house” for a list of things to do to fix up your house. But there is another step you should take before you start putting together your “honey-do” list or contacting contractors. It may sound cliché (and perhaps a little self-serving), but the first item on your to-do list really should be to contact your local Realtor. Have them

tour your house as-is. You are not contractually obligated to use whoever you call, it doesn’t cost a dime, and you may be surprised by what they say needs to be done, as well as what doesn’t. Most homeowners believe that they shouldn’t call an agent until the house is perfect, but a Realtor’s job is to make you the most money possible, which includes saving you the most money from the start. That being said, there are some other things that don’t cost a dime but make a huge impact on selling your home fast and for a good price. The most obvious

Finally, clean, clean, clean. Even older homes can look fresh and new simply by getting rid of a layer of dust on the baseboards, wiping down kitchen cabinets, and scrubbing the bathrooms. And don’t forget the windows… There may be some things that could require professional help, but find out what those things are before you spend the money. Call a Realtor. ¢

is, of course, de-cluttering. Poway has a whole strip mall of thrift stores to make it easy for you to get rid of that uncomfortable rocking chair and the toys your kids haven’t played with since they became too cool for them. Another free and easy way to make more money on your house is to stop smoking inside. Today. Nothing turns a buyer off more than the smell of cigarette smoke when they walk inside. You may not smell it, but they do. Most will not even walk in the house. They will get to the door, smell the smoke, and turn around.

KOKO fITCLUB // Lorrie Snyder

Occupation: Comptroller for the Department of Defense Hobbies: Traveling, walking half-marathons & volunteering

CLIENT PROFILE: Lorri e Sn yd e r

Traveling, walking half-marathons, volunteering with her husband for Worldwide Marriage Encounter and serving as a Comptroller for the Department of Defense keeps Lorrie a busy lady. But when the sudden loss of both her mentor and her sister to cancer within a few months of each other rocked her world, emotional eating resulted, and Lorrie turned to Koko to get back on track. A FitCoach helped design a program for Lorrie to regain lost muscle and build up her cardio capacity. A Koko Key was designed that took into account Lorrie’s range of motion, current strength levels, and got her earning points as a reward! “I really liked the Koko philosophy and approach to training. This wasn't going to be a large, intimidating gym where I'd be just another monthly membership.” Working one-on-one with a professional trainer gives Lorrie the peace of mind in knowing she wasn’t going to injure herself. “Jeff is an awesome FitCoach who encourages me and helps hold me accountable for my fitness. He makes sure I'm using the right form (“Lift with your wrists, not your fists”), pushes me (“Can you do two more?”), and makes working out fun.”

Koko is the workout club 'where everybody knows your name.' The coaches are happy to see you and greet you by name when you come in. They cheer your successes and take a personal interest in seeing you achieve your fitness goals. The atmosphere is friendly and the workouts are great.” Lorrie Snyder Scripps Ranch
