I
’ve always had this strange relationship with time – more specifically, time passing. Of course, I realize that I’m aging each year as I roll past the day that my mother brought me into this world, but I’ve never felt like I was getting any older. I realize that my body is starting to feel older, and for some reason I don’t have as much hair as I once did (according to the mean photos that people have taken of me showing the back of my head). On the other hand, it’s definitely easier to grow facial hair these days – even those special blonde ones that my wife insists are actually grey, but that’s an ongoing debate and still inconclusive. Forget the physical aspects of age. I still feel young mentally – most of the time. While enjoying every last day as I approach the threshold of 43 years, I suddenly felt old this morning. It was an unexpected feeling, but I suppose it should have been predictable. Today, my youngest, my little sweet pea, my little Audrey Becca jumped onto a bus and headed out to sixth grade camp with her friends and classmates. This makes me sad. No, not because I have separation anxiety or I’m afraid that she will be homesick (I’m sure she is going to have a blast and everyone will be just fine – parents included). I’m sad because the years have gone by way too fast. My wife and I have a junior in college. She went to sixth grade camp nine years ago. Our seventh grade son went to camp last year. I was fine with both going. Today is different. Today is a humbling reminder that my little girl is charging life at a faster pace than I am prepared for. I remember some advice that my uncle once told me when talking about life and raising kids. He said, “Don’t blink... because you are going to open your eyes one day and your kids are going to be all grown up. It goes by fast. Cherish every minute.” Derrick Breaux I MUST HAVE BLINKED! Make no mistake about it, I’m Publisher trying not to blink again any time soon. I will take that great advice and do my best to cherish every minute moving forward. Thanks for being a reader of 92064 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. Arts in Education
TRAVELING CHILDREN’S THEATER TO RECRUIT LOCAL CAST
P
oway OnStage, through its Arts in Education Initiative, will present the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s (MCT) production of Treasure Island and a free week-long theater camp for children in March. The MCT tour team will arrive with a set, lights, costumes, props, and makeup – everything it takes to put on a play except a cast. The team will hold an open audition on Monday, March 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. to cast 50 to 60 local students ages five to 18 to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week, Monday through Friday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., culminating in two public performances on Saturday, March 18 at 3 and 7 p.m. In addition to producing this unique musical theater experience for children in the community, the Arts in Education Initiative sponsors a variety of theater arts workshops taught by MCT directors and actors to over 350 elementary students in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD). In-classroom workshop topics range from improv acting to stage makeup. This year, workshops will be held from March 14 to 16 at local PUSD elementary schools.
MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theater, bringing the performing arts to all 50 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and 16 countries. All shows are entirely original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairy tales. MCT seeks to help children grow into confident, successful citizens by utilizing the positive results of their programs, including goal achievement, communication, creativity, self-esteem, and social skills. For more information about the Arts in Education Initiative visit www.powayonstage.org. ¢

Surviving the Cure
LOCAL RESIDENT PUBLISHES MEMOIR ABOUT LIFE AFTER CANCER
P
oway High School graduate Andrew Bundy released his first memoir, Surviving the Cure: Cancer was Easy,* Living is Hard (*relatively speaking), which chronicles his experiences as a cancer survivor, in February. In 2007, at just 18 years old and three weeks before his high school graduation, Andrew was diagnosed
“Cancer doesn’t end with cancer.” with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. After six months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, Andrew entered remission. But in 2008, he developed a severe case of graft versus host disease (GVHD) and had to endure yet another set of intensive treatments to keep him alive. Those treatments spared his life, but at a price: 100 pounds of weight gain, mental and emotional trauma, drug addiction, and a degenerative bone disease that
has forced him to undergo nine joint replacement surgeries over four years. Andrew is now 28 years old and channeling his experiences as an advocate for survivorship. “There is a belief that if you survive cancer you spend a few months recovering and then return to normal life a wiser, stronger, and better person for having gone through such a rough fight. However, the truth is more complex, harsher, and surprising: cancer doesn’t end with cancer,” Andrew shared. “The side effects of treatments, and sometimes even the side effects of treating the side effects, leave a mark on almost every survivor. My memoir provides an honest look into the rarely discussed challenges people can face after they survive cancer.” Andrew hopes that sharing his story will help secure a better life for people like him and let them know that they are not alone. Surviving the Cure is available in both print and as an eBook on Amazon. Keep updated at www.survivingthecure.blogspot.com. ¢

She is the third generation of musicians in her family, with her father, Chris Danielson, being her biggest musical inspiration. “My dad taught me to play the violin when I was two years old. It was Ms. Reiner who recently offered Riley a scholarship to a well-known music camp in New York City. “I won a scholarship to Mark O’Connor’s New York City music camp last summer,” explained Riley, who was chaperoned to the camp by her father. Both Riley and Chris thoroughly enjoyed their time at the camp, and Riley was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with talented musicians and loved performing on stage. Aside from her time spent practicing music, Riley, who lives in Poway with her family, attends first grade at Community Montessori Charter School. “My favorite thing about school is my friends and my teacher Mrs. Bennett,” shared Riley. “Mrs. Bennett teaches me new lessons, and I like math because it is fun and challenging!” “My dad taught me to Riley also stays busy with play the violin when I gymnastics and enjoys reading. “My was two years old. They attend every one of Brian's baseball games and even travel on the road with the team. “In the school year we are a normal daytime family,” Maripat shared. “In the summer we are a baseball gypsy family, traveling around from city to city.” And they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We look at it like the experience of a lifetime.” When the Lawrences aren’t at a baseball park, they can be found at their second home in Big Bear, on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, golfing, or being involved in the local community. Quinn, a second grader at Painted Rock Elementary, enjoys playing softball, art, riding her bike, and playing with her sister. Bryce is a kindergartener at Painted Rock and loves softball, dancing, and animals. Maripat keeps busy as a member of the Painted Rock Elementary School Foundation Board, the Poway Girls Softball League Board, and the Painted Rock PTA, as well as volunteering in her daughters' classes on a weekly basis. Brian holds pitching lessons for local Poway Little Leaguers and plays on a men’s softball team with other Painted Rock dads in his spare time. No matter how much time the Lawrences spend away, they love calling Poway home. “We appreciate Poway so much more because of all the places we travel,” Maripat exclaimed. “There is no other place we would want to live, and trust me, we have seen it all!”

INGREDIENTS ½ 13 / ¾ 13 / 1 1
cup egg whites cup almond milk cup rolled oats cup blueberries, divided teaspoon baking powder pinch xanthan gum nonstick cooking spray sweetener of your choice, to taste
Toppings peanut butter, optional (but highly suggested) maple syrup

6. 7. 8.
Combine all ingredients in your blender or food processor. Include half of your 1/3 cup blueberries in the blender mixture, and put the rest aside for now. Blend ingredients until your mixture is the consistency of a thick batter. If your blender or food processor has a “batter” option, use that. Otherwise 30 seconds is probably sufficient. Spray your pan lightly and pour your batter into the pan. Sprinkle in a few of your remaining blueberries into the pancake batter, but be sure to save some for your second pancake. Cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes. Keep a close eye on your pancake, checking every few minutes for a golden brown bottom. With a spatula, flip when ready. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for your second pancake. Once ready, plate your delicious creation and marvel at your new breakfasting skills. Optional: top your pancakes with peanut butter (my favorite) or (the more traditional option) maple syrup.

ABOUT THE CHEF CHEF: Randi Cantrell PROFESSION: ZCode Media Associate Editor FAMILY: Husband – Collin; Cat – Kikka; Dog – Kiba HOBBIES & INTERESTS: Writing, strength training/fitness, reading, traveling FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITY: Hiking, training at Sweathaus ABOUT THE RECIPE: As a fitness enthusiast, I’m often looking for
healthier or macro-friendly alternatives to my favorite foods. I adapted this recipe from somewhere long ago, but have changed it so much over time that I now consider it my own. It’s easy to make and can be changed according to the season – skip the blueberries and add pumpkin puree instead, if that’s your jam. While they may not be like any pancake you’re used to, I think you’ll enjoy what they bring to the table. Perfect as a pre-workout breakfast! ABOUT THE CHEF: A San Diego native and word lover since birth, I think it’s pretty great that I get to spend my weekdays learning about the amazing residents of North County and spotlighting them in ZCode’s community magazines. During the weekend, I spend my time writing, exploring new spots for coffee or food, and just generally trying to take in more sunshine. ¢

Give, Receive, Share, and Lend LOCAL GROUP ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
A
Facebook-based group called Buy Nothing Poway, part of the international Buy Nothing Project, offers a new way to connect with fellow community members. The group allows people to give, receive, share, and lend goods and services, as well as express gratitude freely through a worldwide network of hyper-local gift economies. Things that have been shared in the past include clothes, food, plants, animals, laundry detergent, plastic bags, antiques, toys, flowers, furniture, and much more. There is no buying, selling, bartering, or trading allowed –

only civil and legal gifting that encourages members to develop relationships with their real-life neighbors while committing acts of kindness together. What’s more, Buy Nothing believes its local groups have a positive impact on the environment. Individuals and communities are able to reduce their dependence on single-use and virgin materials by extending the life of existing items through gifting and sharing between group members. Borrowing an item from a neighbor instead of buying the same item brand-new, for example, may reduce the
overproduction of unnecessary goods over time that end up in landfills, watersheds, and oceans. The Buy Nothing Project was started by friends Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark as an experiment on Bainbridge Island, WA. Nearly four years later, it has become a worldwide social movement, with over 280,000 members in 18 nations with 1,300 groups and over 1,700 volunteers. You may only join one group in the community in which you live. To join the group, search for Buy Nothing Poway on www.facebook.com. For more information visit www.buynothingproject.org. ¢

RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AUXILIARY RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD
T
he Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary recently received the prestigious Thomas F. Carter Leadership Award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteer leaders and philanthropists that are dedicated to the patients and families at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The award was bestowed to the Rady family in 2015 and originally given to Thomas Carter himself in 2000 for his exceptional leadership. “Rady Children’s Auxiliary is proud and honored to receive the Thomas Carter Award,” said Auxiliary President Mary Reynolds. “The Auxiliary’s mission is to advocate for, educate about, and fundraise for Rady Children’s Hospital. We have fulfilled that mission for 64 years, raising $70 million and touching every corner of the hospital. To be recognized for that
achievement is extremely gratifying.” The Auxiliary was established in 1953 as a way to promote the welfare of Rady Children’s Hospital. The group has not strayed from its original statement of purpose since then. The organization now consists of 23 units that span throughout San Diego and Riverside counties. The Poway Unit is looking forward to its annual Tabletops and Tea fundraiser in May. In addition to supporting Rady Children’s programs and services, the Auxiliary has pledged to raise $2.5 million to establish the Auxiliary Endowment for Neuroscience at the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine. The endowment will help improve patient care by providing clinical genetics, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and cutting-edge research for children with neurological diseases and disorders. For more information or to contribute to the endowment fund visit www.radyfoundation.org/auxiliary/units/poway. ¢

BUILDING HOPE
Paula Claussen and Project Mercy Give Housing and Hope to Those in Need in Mexico by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography
P
aula Claussen founded Project Mercy 26 years ago to help devastatingly poor families living along the border in Mexico. Project Mercy is now a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that builds basic but sturdy houses for the poorest families in the outlying neighborhoods or “colonias” of Tijuana, Mexico. “We have built more than 1,300 solid little houses for families living in dire poverty in flimsy shacks with dirt floors and leaking roofs. We build on a year-round basis with various local groups – rotary clubs, churches, family groups, and companies. Ninety cents of every dollar donated goes directly into construction. Our fundraising is also a year-round effort to continue to provide sanitary housing,” explained Paula, who was chosen as one of the 25 CNN Heroes in 2016. Recipients of the Project Mercy housing program are chosen based on three criteria: need, length of time in the program, and the amount of “sweat equity” given. “We ask the residents to work on at least four houses for their neighbors prior to receiving their own. This draws people together and promotes a sense of community,” stated Paula, who added that exceptions are made for single mothers and disabled persons. She is proud that the organization has grown through word of mouth over the years and has helped so many people and changed their lives for the better.
24 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2017
Growing up in England, Paula studied languages and business in school. She is currently the capital building program manager at Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista. She and her family have lived in the Rancho Arbolitos community since 1998. “My husband is a retired Naval officer, and I have two children, two dogs, and a cat. I became a grandma for the first time in February. It is a good and busy life,” related Paula. She enjoys walking her dogs, spending time at Old Poway Park, Lake Poway, and shopping at the thrift stores on Poway Rd. “I also love to travel and experience different nationalities and their way of living – it is a part of who I am,” revealed this local community hero. It is the site of a Blue Star Memorial, a marker that pays tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces, and has also had the benefit of several Boy Scouts projects over the years. FROM THE ORAL SURGEON
Wise Words About Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t usually happen. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum, and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there may be present or future problems. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid-teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Once it is decided that wisdom teeth need to be removed, the patient can elect to have them removed all at once or one or two at a time. While you do not need to remove all wisdom teeth at the same time, doing so can reduce the overall recuperation time since the patient will only have to recover once versus multiple times. Depending on the complexity of the extractions, surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, where the patient is fully awake; under general anesthesia, fully asleep; or with light sedation combined with local anesthesia.
After surgery, it is important to remember the DOs and DON’Ts of recovery: DO: • Rest the day of and day after surgery; plan on half-speed the third day. • Place ice on jaws for 72 hours as directed. • Have plenty of soft foods in the fridge. DON’T: • Smoke, dip, or chew tobacco. • Use drinking straws. • Use alcohol or mouthwash. • Lift, bend, strain, or play sports. All DON’Ts apply for seven days post-surgery.
Be Wi s e A b ou t You r Wi s d om T ee t h Dr. Albert Lin and Dr. Robert Gramins offer a full scope of oral and facial surgery ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to facial trauma reconstruction and facial cosmetic surgery.
Did You Know? The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons suggests timely removal of wisdom teeth during the teenage years. This is an ideal opportunity to remove impacted and unerupted teeth.

COMMUNITY STUFF
Country Montessori Selected as Model School
New PUSD Superintendent
Country Montessori School (CMS) of Poway has been chosen as one of three schools in San Diego by the American Montessori Society (AMS) for onsite, educational tours on March 9. More than 55 national and international participants are expected to take advantage of this unique opportunity to take a physical tour of the school, as well as attend an onsite workshop by longtime Montessorian and music teacher Frank Leto. “Being selected for this tour fulfills one of the dreams that we envisioned when we started CMS over 28 years ago – to be a model school for excellence in education for our students, parents, and teachers,” said Head of School Adela Corrales. “Students at CMS are part of a community, not just a school. I’m excited to be able to share this community with teachers and faculty from across the world as part of the AMS tour.” Founded in 1989, CMS is a nonprofit educational institution serving children in early childhood, lower elementary, and upper elementary programs. Learn more at www.countrymontessorischool.org.
After a nationwide search, the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps as the new superintendent from a pool of 91 applicants. She will not only be the first woman of color but the first woman to hold the position when her contract is approved by the board on March 7. “I am honored to have been selected as the new superintendent for Poway Unified, and I look forward to being part of a high quality team and district,” she said. “I am committed to ensuring that our children not only have the skills necessary to be college and career ready but have the skills needed to be successful in life!” Dr. Kim-Phelps has 25 years of experience as an educator, serving as an elementary and middle school teacher, vice principal, area superintendent, and as the current superintendent of Westminster School District in Orange County. “Dr. Kim-Phelps is an incredibly accomplished superintendent,” said Board President Michelle O’ConnorRatcliff. “She has outstanding credentials and brings the experience and vision needed to lead the district and embrace the community.” Learn more at www.powayusd.com.
PowPAC Presents Over the Tavern PowPAC, Poway’s community theater, will present Over the Tavern from Friday, March 24 through Sunday, April 23. Set in the playwright’s hometown of Buffalo, NY during the 1950s, Over the Tavern tells the story of the Pazinski family – mom, dad, and their children Eddie, Annie, Georgie, and Rudy. The four children are caught between the claustrophobic authoritarianism of the Roman Catholic Church and an emotionally abusive father. When 12-year-old Rudy goes up against the ruler-welding Sister Clarissa and announces that instead of being confirmed he’d rather shop around for a more “fun” religion, all hell breaks loose. It is only his mother, with her good sense, sanity, and wry humor, who keeps the family afloat. Originally published in 2006, Over the Tavern ran for over a year in Chicago and garnered critical praise. PowPAC performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 for general admission and $20 for students, seniors, and active duty military. For more information visit www.powpac.org.
San Diego Women’s Week The North San Diego Business Chamber will again present its annual Women’s Week from March 20 through 24. Events this year include Opening Day, an expo with vendors, makeovers, and breakout sessions; Dare to Dream, with wine and food tasting, shopping, and networking; The Girlfriend’s Guide to Good Health, an informational evening with appetizers, health screenings, and opportunities for one-on-one questions with health experts; and the Inspiration Conference, an all-day event with vendors, food, keynote speakers, and panel discussions. Conference speakers include U.S. Paralympic track sprinter and jumper Scout Bassett, actress Kim Coles, Co-founder and Content Chief Elliot Kotek, and Ellevest Co-founder and CEO Sallie Krawcheck. Established in 2010, San Diego Women’s Week is four days of events designed to inspire, empower, and connect women of all ages and professions. For more information go to www.sdwomensweek.com.
Poway Symphony Orchestra Concert
6th Annual Adobe Home Tour
The Poway Symphony Orchestra will perform its Audience Favorites concert on Sunday, March 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Music Director and Conductor John LoPiccolo has chosen three favorites of the Romantic period, including Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave, Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor. Established in 2005, the Poway Symphony Orchestra fills a need for classical music performances in the community and for musicians interested in playing in a full orchestra. Since its inception, the orchestra has expanded its repertoire to over 75 classical music masterpieces of the great composers, which are performed at its three annual concerts. Tickets for the Audience Favorites concert can be purchased up to three weeks prior to the performance at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Box Office, by calling 858-748-0505, or at www.powaycenter.com. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students. For more information about the orchestra visit www.powaysymphony.org.
The 6th Annual Adobe Home Tour will feature two Poway homes and three Escondido homes on Sunday, March 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. San Diego’s North County area has a rich history of adobe home construction. These homes celebrate the enduring appeal of ancient building methods and materials restored for 21st century lifestyles. Bandy Canyon Ranch will also be open to tour attendees again this year. The Adobe Home Tour was launched in 2011 to draw attention to these unique and beautiful homes by making them available for public viewing. “There are so many misconceptions about adobe,” said Ben Loescher from Adobe is Not Software (AiNS). “Opportunities like the Adobe Home Tour offer a kind of public exposure that is wonderful both for new work and those seeking to conserve existing buildings.” Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online or by mail. Proceeds benefit the Escondido History Center. For more information go to www.adobehometour.com.

Meet and Greet with José Feliciano photo by Daren Scott
Nine-time Grammy Award winning artist José Feliciano met with blind and visually impaired music students from the Braille Institute San Diego before his performance at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts in February. The students asked him questions about his music career and gave him mementos. José signed autographs and talked about the importance of Braille, despite the increasing ubiquity of audio books. “It’s really inspiring to meet someone who is a successful musician who also happens to be blind,” said Denise Bravell, a student at Braille Institute and also a volunteer teacher for the organization’s Music is Fun for Everyone Music Appreciation Class. José reminded the students that “Braille is an important language for the blind that cannot be replaced.” To learn more about the free music program and other classes at Braille Institute visit www.brailleinstitute.org.

Boardwalk Craft Market Schedule The Poway Arts & Crafts Guild’s Boardwalk Craft Market opened its 2017 season in February, continuing on the first Saturday of the month in March, April, and May, on the first and third Saturday in June, July, and August, and every Saturday from Labor Day Weekend until Christmas from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Old Poway Park. The craft market features original work by individual artists and craftsmen, who are juried on a high standard of craftsmanship, creativity, and appropriateness to Old Poway Park’s living history theme. Their work reflects a connection with traditional arts and crafts done at the turn of the 20th century, including wood, metal, glass, clay, fabric, fibers, painting, drawing, soapmaking, and photography. The Boardwalk Craft Market began in 1993 as a companion to the farmers market at Old Poway Park, adding to the education and enjoyment of park visitors. Local Grammy Education Award Finalist Bernardo Heights Middle School Orchestra Director Ulli Reiner was among the top 10 finalists for the 2017 Grammy Music Educator Award. The final garden was completely transformed into a colorful and dramatic drought-tolerant landscape, spotted with pottery and stone statuary as well as a 50-foot putting green in the backyard. Funds raised will support Gardeners Club projects in the local community. Tickets are available at Walter Andersen Nursery in Poway, by mail, at www.bernardogardeners.org, or by calling 858-432-4060.

OUTPOST SUMMER CAMPS N

Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child. Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.” Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates as a licensed, organized San Diego camp. Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
LITTLE ROOKIES & ALLSTAR BASEBALL & SOFTBALL SUMMER CAMPS L
ittle Rookies and AllStar Baseball and Softball camps offer boys and girls ages 4 to 12 the ultimate training environment. Baseball and softball programs are divided into age and skill divisions for the best individual experience. The Little Rookies division serves ages 4 to 6, and AllStar Baseball and Softball serves ages 7 to 12. Full-day, half-day, and extended options are available to fit any family schedule at locations throughout San Diego. “My goal is for each player to first have an enjoyable experience, learn all the great fundamentals of the game the right way, and round themselves out to become the complete player by playing in a live game each day,” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, owner of Little Rookies. Young players learn the fundamentals with state-ofthe-art equipment – hitting and throwing nets, baseball and softball pitching machines, portable pitching mounds, a 60 by 15-foot batting cage, and more. Every afternoon is a chance to put those fundamentals into practice with daily live games. The team spirit and camaraderie solidify the experience. “The players and families look forward to summer camp every year, and it’s a big reunion of players, friends, families, and coaches,” said Coach Kurtis. “It’s amazing to see the kids’ growth each summer as they move up in divisions.” As Brad Ausmus, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, put it, “Coach Kurtis teaches each student valuable fundamental work that connects them to the game and creates super confidence in all as they learn under him. They graduate from the clinics at a much higher level of ball.” Learn more at www.LittleRookiesTBallSchool.com and www.AllStarBaseballSoftball.com. ¢

SAN DIEGO FORCE FC S
an Diego Force Futbol Club (SD Force FC) Camps offer the exciting opportunity to experience specialized, intensive soccer training focusing on the technical, tactical, and physical demands of the game. The camps are geared toward players ages 4 to 16 who have a passion for the game and wish to enhance their technical individual skills and improve their ability to freely express themselves with the ball. Training is led by the SD Force FC technical directors of coaching – Jose Ocampo (Director); Adrian Ocampo (Assistant Director – Girls); and Paul Currie (Assistant Director – Boys) – and the rest of the coaching staff. The technical coaching staff has a combined 70-plus years of coaching experience varying from youth competitive soccer all the way to the semi-professional soccer levels. In youth soccer, the technical directors, along with their coaching staff, bring several years of experience and success in high-level soccer leagues such as Elite Clubs National League (ECNL); Academy; and several Cal South State Championships. The brand of soccer all of the coaches teach is a “Tiki Taka” style of play (quick, short-distance passing) coupled with promoting individual creativity with the ball at the player’s feet. This same method is applied to all youth teams during the camps. These camps provide players a fun environment to learn, discover new techniques that improve confidence, champion the acquired skills, and work as a team. These skills will give each player the opportunity for success at any level of soccer and give them the added benefit of building lifelong friendships. Camps will begin in April 2017! LITTLE ITALY Get a Taste of Italy Right Here in San Diego by SAMANTHA EDWARDS
N
estled along the waterfront in the northwest district of downtown, between the bustling San Diego International Airport and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, is a charming city section with a European flair. San Diego’s Little Italy was founded in the 1920s by Italian immigrant families, who built the area into a prominent fishing neighborhood during the height of the tuna industry on the West Coast. Despite suffering nearly 30 years of decline by the mid-'90s, Little Italy not only still exists today – it is a growing and thriving part of the San Diego cityscape. In fact, it has been recognized as one of the top Little Italy neighborhoods in the nation. And perhaps now more than ever, Little Italy is alive with community spirit. The streets of the 48-square-block neighborhood are studded with patio cafes, public piazzas, markets, authentic restaurants, boutiques, art displays, and other attractions that pay tribute to its rich Italian heritage. The area has been managed by the Little Italy Association of San Diego since 1996, an effort that has proven successful in preserving Little Italy as a stable ethnic business and residential community. This spring the association will complete the largest project of its kind: Piazza della Famiglia, a 10,000-square-foot European-style plaza intended to become the new
heart of Little Italy. The piazza will serve as a central community gathering place to host the area's various activities including farmers markets, concerts, cultural events, and more. So grab your family and friends, head down south, and explore all there is to do in this delightful cultural landmark. ¢

Low Inventory! by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO
T
hat’s the most common topic of conversations among Poway real estate agents these days. Anyone listening in has surely heard it. But what does it really mean? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? In real estate, low inventory means the total number of homes for sale has decreased, compared to the number of buyers, which is increasing. Specifically, there were 109 single family homes for sale in Poway in January 2016, compared to only 72 in January 2017, according to the San Diego MLS provider, Sandicor. That’s a huge decrease! This change in supply and demand resulted in an
increased median home price in Poway from $572,500 to $659,800 for the same time period. This is very good news for anyone who is considering selling their home this year. As long as there are few homes for sale, creating greater buyer demand than the supply of homes, you are likely to get your asking price, close to it, or possibly even higher. That means now is the time to sell! But what about if you are hoping to buy a home this year? Does this mean you should wait?

need to have all their documents ready, proving they are able to close escrow, if their offer is chosen. First and foremost, buyers need to get pre-approved by a lender before they fall in love with a home. This can sometimes take a few days, during which time the home of your dreams could go into contract with someone else. Bottom line, don’t wait. ¢

On the contrary, it means buyers should be confident that if they purchase a home this year, their investment will continue to increase in value. Waiting another year could mean paying significantly more for the same home. And with interest rates going up, your buying power will decrease. Buyers need to be prepared, though. A market with low inventory frequently results in homes receiving multiple offers within the first week, so buyers need to know what they want, know how much they can spend, be ready to move fast, and get creative to make their offer stand out and get noticed.
