Creating Lasting Memories

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

M

y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92064 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. PAULA AND MARTHA CONTRERAS EMBRACE THEIR COMMUNITY AND THEIR CULTURE

P

aula and Martha Contreras are lifelong North County residents, and they love their neighborhood community. They attend Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, where Paula’s favorite subjects are history and science – she’s interested in the past and its effect on the future. Martha enjoys her studies of multiple languages: Spanish, French, and English. The Contreras sisters are first generation Americans – both parents immigrated from Mexico, and the girls are native English and Spanish speakers. They appreciate the support and opportunities they find at school. Martha mentioned Ms. Juskaitis and extra meetings to help with grammar. “This improvement would not have been possible if I did not meet with Ms. Juskaitis and if she did not care so much about her students.” Paula commented on the opportunity for global travel at Pacific Ridge. “Last year I went to China for two weeks with my classmates,” she said. “This year I spent a week in the Northern Sierras backpacking with a group of classmates.” As far as extracurriculars and

volunteerism, Martha plays varsity basketball and lacrosse, while Paula does both varsity and club lacrosse. Both are members of the Student Equity Advisory (S.E.A.), ensuring diversity on campus and that all students feel safe, strong, and represented within the community. The sisters are co-leaders of Latinos Unidos on campus, an ethnicity group that puts on events to help spread the culture and raise money to assist the Latino community. “I have volunteered in Rosarito, Mexico,” Martha shared, “where I went to an orphanage and brought kids clothes and toys – such as my precious LEGO set at the time.” Paula is in the process of creating a nonprofit with their eldest sister Andrea, helping impoverished kids underserved by the educational system in Mexico, specifically orphans living in Tijuana. “We plan on doing this by once a week giving classes: English, Computing, Current Issues, and Math Tutoring.” The twins’ future goals also align with their global outlook: Paula would like to study international relations or environmental science, and Martha’s looking at international business with hopes to study abroad for at least one year. 

MARKETING PROFILE

One Stop, Local Creative Digital Agency 2Point Helps Companies Build, Manage and Expand Their Digital Footprint by LIZ ONUFER

W

hat happens when you see an outdated website? Most of us click right past. What about no social media presence? The old adage about first impressions still holds true in the virtual world. Creating and maintaining an engaging and eye-catching internet presence is a real struggle for most businesses, who rarely have the in-house capacity to do this work well. Understanding this challenge, 2Point Digital Agency specializes in creating websites with that “it” factor, while managing content and other digital marketing services for small businesses in San Diego. In 2006, Founder and CEO Jon Dubensky saw the need for high-quality websites at affordable rates. “Business owners don’t have the time or expertise to run websites, Google ads, and social media, and they can’t afford to hire in-house,” Jon acknowledged. Thirteen years later, Jon and his team of graphic designers, programmers, and marketing specialists are serving local businesses with animated websites, custom content, and all-in-one marketing bundles. 2Point Digital Agency knows the power of a potential customer’s first click. “We produce custom websites that wow customers,” Jon explained. “First impressions are everything when it comes to competition online for any industry. Our sites make business owners stand out.” That means the custom

content for every client is created by a top-notch team of designers, programmers, and marketing specialists. “Once we understand what each client does through multiple strategy sessions, it allows us to apply high-end site design and marketing strategies for each business,” Jon shared. The businesses who use 2Point Digital Agency range from bio science to car washes to pet sitting. Small business owner Dennis Shoemaker shared, “The team at 2Point came up with a one-year marketing plan – new website, professional video, and integrated social media marketing, including monthly analytics meetings to analyze progress. Sales are up, and I can spend more time actually running my business.” That’s the specialty of 2Point – blending the knowledge of the digital world with the work of small business owners. A sign of their success is the 95% retention rate. “Most of our clients have been with us for many years and use us for multiple websites and businesses they run,” Jon said. 2Point Digital Agency hosts a digital boot camp every month at their office, providing free information to support the local business community. Knowing the importance of that first impression and the challenges of the online environment, Jon and his team are invested in seeing local small businesses succeed. 

Local Star’s Great Escape JACKIE FOSTER SHARES HER VOICE IN DEBUT SINGLE

S

an Diego local and worldwide singing sensation Jackie Foster is launching the next step of her musical journey with the release of her first single and her first festival appearance. Last year, the Poway High School graduate appeared on season 14 of The Voice, reaching the semifinals under the guidance of her coach, Alicia Keys. The show was a whirlwind learning experience, and now Jackie is ready to make her individual mark on the music industry. Her single, “Great Escape,” debuted on July 26. Jackie was inspired to open up about the artistic struggles she faced after her time on The Voice ended. “I felt empty, like I lost my purpose,” she shared. “I lost the show which was like a family to me and I lost my

Beyond providing a comfortable patient experience, Dr. Gilmore is highly qualified in his field. After serving as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, he decided to pursue his passion of dentistry. COMMUNITY STUFF

PowPAC Presents Private Lives

Small Business of the Year

PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, kicks off a new season with Private Lives. The classic comedy revolves around two ex-spouses on honeymoons with their new spouses – accidentally booking the same hotel at the same time. Old passion resurfaces, and impulsive decisions set off a humorous, tumultuous chain of changing partnerships. This production is directed by local actor and director Larry Steckling. The cast includes Linda Englund, Richard Rivera, Eliza Huf, James Winkler, and Diane Thrasher. The comedy by Noel Coward opens Friday, Aug. 9 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 8. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., with an additional Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24. Find tickets and more information at www.powpac.org.

Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. More than 70% of the company’s furnishings are upcycled, recycled, and repurposed as well. “Second Chance Beer Company has served as a worthy example for many businesses to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Despite being a relatively new brewery, the company has contributed tremendously to both the economic strength and environmental sustainability of our community.” The brewery was founded by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes, and Virginia Morrison. In addition to the original Carmel Mountain Ranch brewery and taproom, they now have a tasting room in North Park.

Local School Recognized Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) was recently voted the #1 Best Private School in the Best of North Inland 2019 Reader’s Poll, hosted by the Pomerado News. “It is a high honor to be named Best Private School in the North County Inland area. We are blessed to have a talented team of educators who are dedicated to teaching students so that they can reach their fullest potential,” shared the school. “Maranatha Christian Schools has a thriving community that is due to a large part of our supportive parents and families.” MCS is dedicated to providing a comprehensive, innovative learning environment for preschool through high school students. Recent developments include the installation of new turf for the school’s state-of-the-art athletics fields and confirming full accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for the next six years. Nonprofit of the Year The 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Nonprofit of the Year is the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The organization serves an average of 350,000 people per month, distributing food directly to San Diegans in need at more than 200 sites every month as well as providing food for more than 500 other nonprofit feeding programs, such as soup kitchens and churches. “The San Diego Food Bank has served an important role in our community through the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who presented the award. “I truly appreciate their work providing food and other resources to those who are in need in the San Diego region.” Around 24,000 people volunteer at the nonprofit warehouse every year and provided 28 million pounds of food in 2018. “It takes a community to feed a community, and this award honors the wonderful people who make our mission possible,” said James A. Floros, San Diego Food Bank President and CEO. Learn more at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 31st Annual Spring Fling Gala, Our Extravagant World Tour, took place at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in June. Guests enjoyed food from 20 local restaurants, entertainment by Haute Chile Productions, and exciting silent and live auctions. The event, co-chaired by Jamie Carr and Erin Combs, raised over $445,000 to support the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center, including: saving more orphan pets through the Adoptions Transfer Program; serving more homeless San Diegans through Pets Without Walls; and continuing to provide unique opportunities to support the bond between humans and animals through the Humane Education Program. Helen Woodward Animal Center also recently celebrated the opening of its brand new pet Adoptions Building, which will help the center better serve the approximately 3,500 animals that come through its doors each year. M

anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages. Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to? Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539. 

r. Jodi McGrady opened McGrady Dental Group with one goal: taking care of families. “I love working with kids and helping to introduce them to dentistry without fear,” Dr. McGrady explained. “By offering services for the entire family, kids don’t have to age out of our practice, and busy moms can get their teeth cleaned at the same time as the kids.” She has always had an interest in comprehensive, community-minded dentistry. After receiving her first dental degree at University of Pittsburgh, she studied hospital dentistry and trained to treat children with special needs at University of Iowa, receiving a master’s degree in dental public health. She and her husband, periodontist Dr. Michael Spilotro, practiced together in Santa Fe, NM for 10 years before relocating to San Diego. Dr. McGrady continued studying pediatric

dentistry at University of California Los Angeles and Rady Children’s Hospital, completing her pediatric residency in 2011. She remains involved with the hospital. “I’m currently the Chief of Dental Services at Rady Children’s Hospital,” she explained. “This gives us one more option for kids with health concerns or extensive treatment needs to be treated in a safe environment.” Providing safe, high-quality treatment and serving the community is a family affair at McGrady Dental Group. Dr. McGrady lives locally with her husband and three teenagers. Her husband works in the office two days a month, and two of her children join Dr. McGrady on trips to Ensenada, Mexico, volunteering with 1000 Smiles. “I enjoy the relationships you build in pediatrics and family dentistry,” Dr. McGrady concluded. “You truly watch kids grow up and get to share in their joys and successes.” 

hether in her warm, welcoming office or at home in the North County community, Dr. Susan Hong is committed to fostering lifelong relationships. Her patients’ needs and comfort are her highest priority, and she uses her years of expertise and cutting-edge technology to create lasting smiles. Dr. Hong has practiced dentistry for nearly 20 years. A native New Yorker, she ran a private practice in downtown New York City and taught at Columbia University School of Dentistry before moving to San Diego. She spent 10 years practicing downtown before deciding she wanted to connect more closely with her North County community, where she lives in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and three children. She opened her Rancho Bernardo family and cosmetic dentistry practice in 2015, continuing to provide comprehensive, compassionate care with the highest-quality technology. Her office is equipped with heated massage chairs and televisions, and she offers sedation for anxious patients, but more importantly, her focus on the whole patient creates an effective, trust-based relationship. A key part of that is staying up to date with the latest developments in dental care. Dr. Hong has recently implemented a new technology that allows for a radiation free way to examine teeth like never before. DEXIS CariVu is a new alternative to traditional X-rays that bathes individual teeth in near-infrared light while capturing live video and still images. Because it photographs the tooth from multiple angles, CariVu is especially useful for discovering cracks and early-stage cavities, letting Dr. Hong recommend preventive measures and individualized treatment. “It is a wonderful adjunct to the technology that I already use in providing comprehensive care,” Dr. Hong shared, adding that CariVu is also beneficial for young children and pregnant women who want to avoid ionizing radiation. Dr. Hong also offers Invisalign, laser periodontal treatment, metal-free restorations, implant restorations, and TMJ treatment. ne of the most rewarding aspects about being a dentist is the ability to artistically restore a person’s smile. With 33 years in practice, Dr. Howard’s patients are like family. “Being able to care for another person is one of the highest gifts a dentist can be honored with. My love for this profession has allowed me to do this for thousands of patients.” In today’s ever-demanding world of knowledge and increased consumer awareness, especially in the health care field, more and more people are looking for advanced levels of expertise in the individuals they choose to take care of themselves and their family and friends. Person-to-person referral is the best way that Dr. Nelson Y. Howard’s two very distinctive state-of-the-art dental offices have flourished over the last 27 years. Dr. Howard is the owner of the Center for Advanced Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. The original center opened in San Marcos 27 years ago and in 2009 expanded with the Rancho Bernardo location. His practices focus on the Art and Science of Cosmetic, Functional, Implant, and Restorative Dentistry for adults and children. Dr. Howard has been practicing dentistry since 1986 after graduating from the UCLA School of Dentistry and he completed a General Practice Residency at the V.A. Medical Center in West Los Angeles. “There is no better compliment than to have another person in our practices refer someone to our office because of the trust they have in us as well as the precise nature of what we do and the outstanding results we achieve for everyone who seeks the highest level of dental excellence for their own health and well-being.” Dr. Howard is one of approximately 400 dentists worldwide who has earned the honor and distinction of being an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). In order to achieve this honor, Dr. Howard has undergone extensive training in the area of cosmetic dentistry. He has proven his exceptional level of dentistry in front of the foremost leaders in the field of cosmetic dentistry, who evaluated his dentistry in over 100 different areas in multiple case types of dental care. Dr. Howard was the first dentist in all of North San Diego County to receive this award. No other dentist in all of Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Rancho Peñasquitos, San Marcos, Vista, Carlsbad, Mira Mesa, or many of the immediate areas has this distinction. That is just one of the reasons so many people come to his offices for this advanced level of cosmetic dentistry. Many people are demanding this exceptional level of dentistry now more than ever, especially after having been mistreated by someone who claims to have qualifications and skills that cannot be authenticated. Dr. Howard is an active member of the AACD’s Give Back a Smile Program, which assists in rebuilding the smiles and lives of adults who’ve suffered dental injuries from domestic and physical violence, through compassionate cosmetic dental services and support programs at no cost to the patient. If you are having a dental concern, experiencing an ongoing problem from recently completed dental care, want a second opinion, or would like to become a patient, please call either office that is most convenient for you. op-notch medical care is key to keeping our families healthy and happy – and that goes for our four-legged family members too. That’s why San Diego native Dr. Laura Greenlee Johnson grew up dreaming of becoming a small animal veterinarian. She’s worked with both human and animal patients over the course of her education and career. After graduating from University of California San Diego’s Muir College, Laura worked for several years as part of a team conducting cardiovascular health research in children through early school intervention programs, while also completing a master’s degree in exercise physiology. At 28 years of age, Laura decided it was time to follow her childhood dreams and ventured off to the Caribbean to the island of St. Kitts in order to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She thrived there and even earned the seventh-semester achievement award for her class, which is given to the top student at the end of their final semester of the pre-clinical portion of studies in St. Kitts before heading off to the full clinical year at another U.S. veterinary school. Laura attended Washington State University for her senior clinical year of veterinary school and embraced the change of living in and exploring Washington, Oregon, and Idaho during this fast-paced and intensive portion of her veterinary education. Dr. Greenlee, as she was known by for the next 14 years while working at All Creatures Hospital, Inc. in Del Mar as an associate veterinarian, married her husband Brian Johnson, a longtime Fairbanks Ranch resident, in 2010 in Rancho Santa Fe. They started a family, which now consists of three boys: Nate (8) and Luke and Blake (4-year-old twins). In 2018, Laura decided it was time to follow her next dream and embarked on the journey to establish her own veterinary clinic. After 16 years of practicing, Laura had established a vision of what she felt an ideal veterinary clinic would be like. She’s worked hard to bring that vision to life at Santaluz Animal Care (SAC). SAC provides general practice veterinary medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery (including spays, neuters, mass removals, and other basic procedures), and orthopedic and specialty surgeries can be scheduled at SAC with a mobile board-certified surgeon. The practice specializes in the care of dogs, cats, and some exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and reptiles. SAC treats sick pets and handles veterinary emergencies, as well as focusing on preventative medicine and wellness visits. The office offers a variety of prescription dietary options and medicines onsite and through their competitively-priced online pharmacy. In addition to these traditional services, SAC also offers complementary therapies (alternative medicine), including acupuncture, Chinese veterinary medicine, cold laser therapy, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Johnson and her highly trained staff also use diagnostic tools that are progressive and unique, such as digital thermal imaging, stance analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and digital radiography, as well as digital dental radiography. “The breadth of our offerings, as well as the Fear Free approach to our patients and true quality customer

service, is what sets us apart and goes above and beyond the standard veterinary practice experience,” explained Dr. Johnson. Laura’s team members flocked to join her clinic’s staff upon reading about the clinic’s vision in the job descriptions. They are now a cohesive unit, and the clinic’s dream is now their dream job too. “We can’t wait to show you and your furry family members around our Fear Free-inspired, sPAW-like, gorgeous veterinary clinic,” shared Laura. “Oh – and I almost forgot – we also offer full-service pet grooming on site!”  August | September 2019 • 92064 MAGAZINE.COM • 33

KID COACHES TRAIN THEIR OWN COACH AT THE ANNUAL COACHES CUP by KELLEY GUSICH

W

ith over $30,000 in funds raised this year, North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids have once again combined their efforts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Coaches Cup happened on June 9, gathering athletes and their coaches from North County Gymnastics/Gyminny Kids, Pacific Coast Gymnastics, Poway Gymnastics, and the Peach Pit. The event combined student demonstrations and circus performances, and in an interesting role reversal, the top fundraising athlete for each coach then got to coach that coach for the event. “Most children think an adult over the age of 14 is old,” Daniel Gundert, Director of Operations and Head Team Coach for North County Gymnastics and Gyminny Kids noted, “so the fundraising kids think the idea of their old coach competing is just hilarious!” Poway Gymnastics donated the equipment for the event, at a value well over $10,000, and the time and effort the fundraisers put into the event has proven the most heartwarming and memorable part. From lemonade stands to collecting pledges door-to-door, kid athletes for the Coaches Cup bring everyone together for the crucial cause of children’s health. “This is what we believe as a company,” Daniel affirmed, “but more importantly, this is the life lesson we want to teach our children. If you want something in life, you need to give first without expectation of anything in return. It’s not about the competition, it’s about giving back!” The goal for the Coaches Cup is to see the event grow every year, with a bigger picture vision to eventually have one in every major city across the United States. This way, any company with the title “coach” can fundraise for their local hospital. Imagine any sport: CrossFit, swimming, football, wrestling, diving, track and field – the list of possibilities is endless – with athletes giving their time and coaches getting to compete in the sport they love to benefit the greater good. “Rady Children’s has touched so many of our lives including my son, our employees, and customers, to name a few. Rady’s truly does great things for families regardless of their ability to pay for medical services,” shared Daniel. The 2019 Coaches Cup saw North County Gymnastics as its top fundraiser, followed by Pacific Coast and Poway Gymnastics. “I was sore for a week after the day of the competition, but it was the highlight of my year,” Daniel said. “That feeling of giving is something we want to pass on.” 

What Makes Poway So Appealing to Buyers by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO

W

hen relocating to a new area, there are many factors that home buyers need to consider in order to narrow down the geographic parameters of their home search. These include schools, amenities (such as parks and shopping), crime, space, parking, and of course, price. For those of us that have lived in Poway for a long time, we know that Poway checks off all the right boxes on this list, but to those who may not be as familiar with the area, we may need to break it down. 1. Schools. We all know that the Poway Unified School District is one of the best in the state (not to mention, the country). In fact, schools ranking site Niche.com ranks PUSD as #14 in the state (#5 for athletics!), and #2 in San Diego County. This alone makes Poway one of the most desirable areas in

San Diego. But there is so much more to this amazing city we live in! 2. Amenities. To anyone who has been to Lake Poway for a picnic or summer concert, hiked to Potato Chip Rock, taken their dog to the dog park, or taken their family for a ride on the train at Old Poway Park, we can easily say this place has it all. Add to that the great shopping areas, weekly farmers market, restaurants, and gyms, and you’ve got everything you need! 3. Crime. Poway was recently named one of the 50 safest small cities in the country (#1 in San Diego

FOR THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF PROPERTIES SOLD WITHIN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, VISIT 92064MAGAZINE.COM

4. Space. With relatively large lots (compared to other areas with good schools), most Powegians enjoy not being able to see what their neighbor is watching on TV and have space for their children to play in the backyard. 5. Parking. Unlike downtown or towards the coast, parking is never a problem in Poway. Even in the busy Costco parking lot, you won’t have to drive around for 10 minutes to find a spot. When coming home, the generous driveways and sidewalks mean you will be able to park your car and have company over, too.

6. Price. With a median price/sf of $398, Poway is only slightly higher than the median for the entire county of $368 (according to data from InfoSparks), and a bargain compared to the roughly $650 you would pay in other areas of the county with comparable schools. For those of us that live here, we already know the value. But if you know someone who is looking to discover how great Poway is as well, please have them contact me. I would love to show them just what makes Poway so special! 

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL

T

here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride! 

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!
