Now is the Time to Switch to Scripps It’s fall open enrollment—the time of year when you can choose a new health insurance plan and primary care doctor. Whether your health coverage is through an employer, Covered California or Medicare, there are now more affordable health plans than ever before that give you access to Scripps nationally ranked physicians and hospitals. Scripps is ranked best in San Diego by U.S. News & World Report, and named one of the Top 15 Health Systems by Truven Health Analytics. And we believe the best health care starts with the right primary care doctor. Whether you’re looking for family medicine, internal medicine or pediatrics, Scripps offers some of the top rated doctors in convenient locations near your home or work. Many offer early morning, evening and Saturday hours.
It’s easy to find a doctor who is right for you or your family, just call 858-496-7926 or visit Scripps.org/92064Switch.

y kids and I were in the car the other day chatting about random things. The topic turned to the holidays and their time off of school. It was a typical fall day here in San Diego. We were dressed for the occasion sporting shorts, flip flops, and sunglasses. I glanced at the dash and pointed out that the display showed 84 degrees. It was taunting us to take the boat out. I reminded the pack that we were merely days away from the holidays, and you’re not supposed to go wakeboarding this time of the year. This rationale was definitely met with a bit of teenage resistance. My daughter, to support her argument to hit the water, insisted that it didn’t feel like it was almost Christmas. In fact, she was trying to convince us that it seemed more like a hot summer day. And she was right, but we still didn’t go boating. We are spoiled here in Southern California – especially when it comes to the weather. I explained to my born-and-raised-in-Southern-California kiddos that Christmas feels a little different here than it does in other parts of the country. Although I didn’t grow up shoveling my way out of the house on Christmas morning, I do remember bone-chilling cold fronts and having four distinct seasons. I remember our tradition of heading over to our grandparent’s house bundled up in big coats. The holidays meant it was cold. And people went outside as little as possible. Shorts and sandals had long been packed away. Although my kids have never experienced that type of holiday weather, they do experience the long-standing Southern family traditions that we have kept alive. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. It’s our family Derrick Breaux tradition. And although we may pack swimsuits and sunscreen Publisher instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. Traditions are important to my wife and me, and having everyone together simply warms our hearts. To all of our friends and family close and far, may your holidays and New Year be filled with love, health, and happiness.
All the best, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

LOCAL BUSINESS VOLUNTEERS AT CAF TRIATHLON
S
taff members from local Asis Physical Therapy volunteered at a recent event in support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). The 24th Annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge (SDTC), held in La Jolla, brought 200 physically challenged athletes, 550 able-bodied athletes, celebrities, and professional triathletes together for a onemile swim, 44-mile bike ride, and 10-mile run. “The event was centered around athletes who had physical disabilities, many of whom had lost a limb or experienced physical trauma,” explained Melodie Nungesser, Clinic Manager at Asis Physical Therapy. The Asis
team was stationed to cheer on the athletes during the bike and run sections of the race. “We supported the athletes during the toughest parts of the course,” Melodie said. “We were fortunate to have the chance to cheer on, motivate, high five, and push the athletes of all ages! The passion and enthusiasm shined through in the staff of Asis as they mirrored the
enthusiasm reflected by the drive of the athletes.” Volunteering for the SDTC made a tremendous impact on the Asis team. “We are no stranger to disabilities – every day at Asis Physical Therapy, we help those with different levels of abilities pursue their various goals,” Melodie explained. “At the CAF triathlon, we were able to watch dreams in the making.” The Challenged Athletes Foundation’s mission is to provide opportunities for people with physical challenges to pursue active lifestyles and competitive athletics. Programs include camps and clinics, grants, military outreach, and community education. Learn more at www.challengedathletes.org. ¢

COMMUNITY STUFF
Bells of Freedom Serves Military Families
Girl Scouts Ballet Day
Through its Bells of Freedom program, local nonprofit Dance Hearts kicked off the annual Adopt-a-Marine Family for the Holidays event in October, culminating in The Big Thank You event at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 3. The event serves local military families during the holiday season by connecting them with community sponsors that provide emotional, spiritual, and financial help. The sponsors travel to Camp Pendleton to meet their “adopted” military families, deliver gifts, enjoy a catered lunch, visit from Santa, and a door prize drawing. Founded in 2001, Dance Hearts is dedicated to connecting in-service military men and women to the community they serve through holiday family “adoptions,” emergency support, and transitional housing for displaced women and children. Learn more at www.bellsoffreedom.org.
Southern California Ballet recently hosted a fun, unique event for local Girl Scouts. Titled Dance The Nutcracker in a Day, the event offered just that: a single afternoon introduction to The Nutcracker, choreography instruction, and a final performance. Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts from eight local troops attended the event, earning a ballet patch along the way. The afternoon started with a reading of The Nutcracker story, followed by a presentation about ballet and the creation of The Nutcracker ballet. Girls got a tour of the Southern California Ballet Studios, including costumes, props, and scenery. After a snack and craft break, they warmed up, learned the dances, and got ready to perform for their parents and guests. The event was made possible by a grant from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation. Learn more at www.southerncaliforniaballet.org.
Supporting Women’s Education American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos Branch recently granted three re-entry scholarships to Bayan Almarisa, Nasim Khamooshian, and Kelsey Baird. Bayan graduated from Miramar College in Spring 2017 and is currently attending San Diego State University. She’s majoring in microbiology clinical laboratory and public health microbiology, and she hopes to obtain her doctorate in pathology. Nasim is balancing full-time work with a full load of courses at Miramar College, where she’s majoring in biology. Her goal is to transfer to University of California Irvine and become a physician. Kelsey is currently attending California State University San Marcos and will graduate in 2018, after which she intends to pursue a dual master’s degree in public policy and social work. She advocates for disability rights and women’s health programs. Learn more about AAUW Poway-Peñasquitos at www.powayarea-ca.aauw.net.
Local Musical Talent Poway seventh grader Natasha Mar recently performed at the California Association of Professional Music Teachers Annual Young Artists’ Competition. The competition recognizes intermediate and advanced music students. Natasha performed in a number of categories and won individual first-place medals for Solo Cellist and Cello Duet. She was also in the winning orchestra and ensemble groups. Natasha has loved performing from a young age. She started piano at age three, and started playing the cello three years later. Her mom, Nikki, shared that Natasha also began dancing at age two – she currently enjoys ballet, jazz, and Flamenco, and has won a youth award for Latin ballroom dancing. Natasha has performed with the California Ballet, San Diego Junior Theatre, San Diego Youth Symphony, North County String Ensemble, Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra, and The Bishop’s School Choir.
Distinguished Local Elementary School
Tierra Bonita Elementary School (TBES) has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the third consecutive time. The Poway school now holds the distinction for 2013-2015, 2015-2017, and 2017-2019. Apple Distinguished Schools are selected for their innovative integration of Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. TBES has used iPads to expand student access to books and research materials, as well as collaborating with each other and other students around the world. “This is just one example of how we are supporting PUSD’s mission to prepare our students for college and career readiness in a digitally-rich environment,” explained TBES Principal Mandy Bedard. “I am so proud of our students, staff, and the Tierra Bonita community who have worked together to earn this distinction and make Tierra Bonita a beacon for other schools looking to approach education differently.”
Local Business Honored Poway’s Strategic Business Communications, Inc. (SBC) was recently honored with American Honda’s Premier Partner Award. Out of over 1,000 eligible suppliers across the country, only 15 were selected. “We are tremendously thankful to have the opportunity to provide our services to American Honda, and we look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come,” says Jim Hernandez, President and CEO of Strategic Business Communications, Inc. “To be recognized with such a prestigious award is truly an honor and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the SBC team, who ensures that we operate under our chase of perfect results every time.” Established in 1987, SBC is currently celebrating its 30th year in business. The company provides management training, sales and marketing planning, event planning, and market research services.

For example, we use the iTero Element to digitally scan a patient’s teeth, which can eliminate the need for messy alginate impressions,” explained Dr. Li, who sees both children and adults for such orthodontic treatments. “We also treat many adult and teen patients with Invisalign to offer a more esthetic alternative.” Dr. Li attended the University of Southern California for his undergraduate degree, dental degree, and orthodontic specialty training. “I am a Trojan through and through!” exclaimed Dr. Li. He and his wife, Dr. Natalie Li, optometrist and owner of nearby 4S Eyecare and Optometry, moved to San Diego from Los Angeles in 2005. “We wanted to settle down in a place that had a strong sense of community and small town feel, while still being in a metropolitan city,” shared Dr. Li, who since that time has been a prominent community leader. Dr. Li has been past president of the Stone Ranch Foundation and past chair of the 4S Ranch-Del Sur Community Foundation, and is currently on the Oak Valley Foundation Board. While working at his practice, Dr. Li enjoys taking the time to get to know each of his patients and makes it a top priority to give them special attention. “I am blessed to love what I do,” said Dr. Li, “and help our patients achieve a beautiful smile they can take with them for their entire life!” ¢

Guild (PACG) promoted the vast variety of local creativity. The community has enthusiastically welcomed the market from the beginning, prompting its expansion from four months a year to year-round by popular demand. Guild members and guest artists alike are excited to share their work with the community, making Saturdays in Old Poway Park a time for both education and entertainment. PACG artists celebrate the connections between modern crafts and our community’s rich heritage. We spoke with PACG President Dennis Caldwell and Boardwalk Market Committee Chair Valerie Bailey to learn more.

Q &Awith
D e n n i s C a l d w e l l a n d Va l e r i e B a i l e y What is the history behind the Poway Arts & Crafts Guild? How has it evolved over the years? Valerie: The Poway Arts & Crafts Guild was founded in 1986 “to promote the awareness of quality traditional crafts and craftsmanship in the local community and to encourage, inform, and inspire both the beginning and the established craftsperson by providing a form for exchanging ideas and concerns” (From the mission statement of PACG).
“The Boardwalk Craft Market is a vivid illustration that the past is not a series of dead historical events, but is connected to us
In 1986, PACG established a cooperative gallery for local crafts artists in what is now the Old Poway Village on Midland Rd. The founding members of the Guild had previously been involved in a cooperative gallery in San Diego and brought that experience to this new venture. After several years, it was decided to redirect efforts to a series of monthly outdoor craft fairs for guild members and guest artists. These fairs took place at various locations in the Old Poway area.

When the City of Poway acquired the property that chain of real is now Old Poway Park, PACG moved these shows people.” into the park at the corner of Midland and Aubrey on the site where the train barn was later built. The fairs relocated several times within Old Poway Park as construction of park facilities progressed. As the City of Poway finalized the general concepts of an educational heritage theme for Old Poway Park, plans were made to provide for a weekly Saturday morning farmers
market adjacent to the park. It was decided that the farmers market would sell only food and plant-based items. As plans for the farmers market were implemented, the Poway Arts & Crafts Guild began to work with the City to organize a similar event for craft artists. The concept of the farmers market was “meet the growers” and of the Craft Market was “meet the artists.” In the fall of 1993, the first Boardwalk Craft Market took place on the south boardwalk of Old Poway Park, on Saturday mornings across the railroad tracks from the farmers market, for four months: September to Christmas. The Craft Market was enthusiastically welcomed by the community and returned the next year. After five years, by public request, it expanded to year-round: on the first Saturday of the month from February through August and every Saturday from Labor Day Weekend to Christmas. A few years later, again by public request, additional markets were added on the third Saturday of June, July, and August. What is the Boardwalk Craft Market? What can visitors find there? Valerie: The Boardwalk Craft Market was conceived as a community service rather than a commercial event. It enables the public to meet with the actual craft artists in a stress-free, non-commercial, educational environment. Just as the farmers market has a process of certification to ensure the quality of the food items sold by participant growers, so the Craft Market has a jurying process to ensure the quality of goods produced by participant craft artists. All work is juried on craftsmanship and appropriateness to the historical character of Old Poway Park. As “contemporary craft artists working in traditional crafts,” participants are not restricted to making historical reproductions. Through crafts

The Boardwalk Craft Market is a vivid illustration that the past is not a series of dead historical events, but is connected to us by an unbroken chain of real people. Since 1993, the Boardwalk Craft Market has presented a wide variety of traditional crafts. Examples include: weaving, spinning, quilting, knitting, crochet, tatting, lace making, metal smithing, glass blowing, beading and jewelry making, basketry, woodworking, woodcarving, furniture making, decorative painting, candle making, soap making, pottery, ceramics, copper enameling, and stained and leaded glass. How did you get involved with PACG, and what is your current role? Dennis – President: I was

woodworking as a hobby when I joined the Boardwalk Craft Market as a guest artist in 2006. I became a member of the guild in 2007 and president in 2009. My current role is to conduct our meetings once per month and help coordinate the activities of the Guild. Valerie – Board Market committee chair and founding member: I have been a professional jeweler and silversmith for over 50 years. I have sold my work in shops, galleries, and craft fairs throughout Southern California. This includes 21 years of living history with the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in the Los Angeles/Inland Empire area portraying a 16th Century jeweler and demonstrating metal smithing and jewelry making. My jewelry is in private collections throughout the country, including those of many Hollywood personalities. I have been a Poway resident since 1971. I live in Old Poway very near Old Poway Park, and through the Poway Arts and Crafts Guild and the Boardwalk Craft Market, I spend a lot of time participating in park events. So Old Poway Park would be my favorite spot in Poway. Lorraine Gilbert – Secretary: I became involved with PACG after my husband encouraged me to jury into the Boardwalk Craft Market. After participating in several shows, I was nominated to become a guild member in 1995. I became secretary in 1996. Rick Salazar – Vice President: I am the vice president of the PACG. I am also a landscape photographer. After visiting the market one Saturday, I applied and was juried in. I enjoy meeting the people who come to the market and also seeing the art and crafts of the other people. What are some of the most rewarding and challenging parts about your work with PACG? Dennis: Most rewarding is the teachers’ appreciation of our donations each year and talking with the people who come by to admire the crafted items. The most challenging is setting up and tearing down at each show. How does PACG stay connected to the community? Dennis: We attend all meetings of the Old Poway Park Action Committee and participate closely with the City on events at Old Poway Park. When and where is it held? Is it held year-round? Valerie: The Boardwalk Craft Market is held rain or shine on the south boardwalk of Old Poway Park. The boardwalk surrounds the Hamburger Factory restaurant and the Historical Society’s museum. Dates are the first Saturday of the month from February through May, first and third Saturday June through August, and every Saturday from Labor Day Weekend to the Saturday before Christmas.
How many artists take part in the market? How many members does PACG have? Dennis: We have between 12 and 20 artists at each show, and we have about 20 members of the guild. Valerie: 2017 is the 25th season of the Boardwalk Craft Market in Old Poway Park. There are approximately 25 artists showing their work this season. Each artist chooses the dates they want to participate, so the number of artists varies at each show. There is room for approximately 16 to 18 artists, depending on the space required by each artist and whether or not they are demonstrating. This year’s artists are working in: soap making, glass blowing, sewing, knitting and crochet, quilting, silversmithing, jewelry making, beading, decorative painting, photography, woodworking, pottery and ceramics, and hand spinning and weaving. How can local artists become involved with PACG or the Boardwalk Craft Market? Valerie: Those who wish to participate should keep in mind that the Boardwalk Craft Market is not just a place to sell things. Applicants are juried on their entire body of work, which must show a comprehensive understanding of their craft. By definition, craft means made by hand. Priority is given to crafts not currently being shown on the boardwalk and some areas, such as jewelry, beading, and the fiber arts, have a waiting list. Applications require photographs
and information on how the applicant learned their craft, how long they have been working, and how their work relates to the historical aspect of Old Poway Park. Information on participation may be found at the Craft Market or by calling 858-486-3497. Can you tell us about PACG’s grant program? Who is eligible, and how can they apply? Dennis: We donate to any high school or middle school in the Poway school district. We only send invitations to the art departments of the schools because we want to help encourage young people to participate in local arts and crafts. We try to make it easier for the teachers. Who have been some of the grantees in previous years? Most of the high schools at one time or another and lately we are hearing more from the middle schools. We have donated an average of $600 per year over the last 14 years. ¢

A
true arts hub – that’s the vision of Timothy Lynch and Alexandra Dickson Lynch of the Lynch Dance Institute. “A place brimming with educational and collaborative opportunities that reach far into the community including every discipline in order to support, foster, and develop arts in a world that so desperately needs it,” explained Timothy. Today, the Lynch Dance Institute is well on its way. Nestled between Scripps Ranch and Poway, the Lynch Dance Institute offers dance education to students across San Diego. Classes range from parent and toddler to school-age children to adults. Across all ages, their core teaching philosophy focuses on developing students’ self-confidence and inspiring a love for movement to music. “We provide a joyful, professional, and respectful environment where our students will feel challenged yet accomplished,” said Timothy. “We expect our students to work hard and push themselves outside of their comfort zones, to accept challenges, and to own and celebrate their strengths.” Recently, they began the professional experience program, daytime classes for students preparing for professional dance careers. Timothy and Alexandra have a wealth of professional dance experience and training expertise that works to inspire and motivate their students. “We have traveled the globe performing and working with world renowned choreographers and teachers,” Alexandra explained. “It is this depth of experience, alongside our post-graduate studies and professional enrichment training, that makes the difference for our students.” Whether it’s ballet, tap, jazz, or hip hop, every student at the Lynch Dance Institute receives individual attention and feedback. “It is a true privilege to be a teacher, and I believe that it is my responsibility to encourage my students and to help each one of them embrace an authentic sense of self,” Alexandra said. In addition to instruction, the students also have opportunities to perform. In December, the students will be performing in Mixed Nuts and Holiday Revue, a family friendly holiday production. A spring performance is scheduled for June, as well as summer camps and intensives. Through this blend of instruction, performance opportunities, and community involvement, the Lynch Dance Institute is fostering a love of the arts in all its students. ¢

P
oway Unified School District (PUSD) staff recently participated in Operation Dress Code. This event was originally based in Sacramento, but has been held in San Diego for the past three years. Operation Dress Code helps women make the transition from military to civilian life, with the specific goal of helping them get ready for the civilian workforce. The event includes free shopping through donated clothing “The clothing donation just felt like and accessories, along with resume an extension of what we already reviews, interview tips, professional do to help our community.” hair and makeup, and headshots. PUSD staff collected clothing donations at the Career Technical Adult and Alternative Education (CTAAE) programs office. Career Education Specialist Denise McAndrews and other staff members felt the event fit well with the office’s mission to provide career support and education. “I help people understand the current job market, explore careers, and build high-quality career portfolios. The clothing donation just felt like an extension of what we already do to help our community,” said McAndrews. Operation Dress Code was brought to San Diego in partnership with Courage to Call, a local organization that provides a free, confidential, veteran-staffed helpline. SCHOOL PROFILE
A Love of Learning Grows Here Peaceful, Spacious Environment at Country Montessori School photos provided by Country Montessori School
C
ountry Montessori School (CMS) is committed to maintaining its leadership in Montessori education. Their mission is to foster independent, confident, academically prepared, and socially responsible citizens who will be lifelong learners and problem-solvers. CMS grows and evolves to meet the needs of children, parents, and community. As part of preparing students to be socially responsible citizens, CMS encompasses various community outreach events. Fifth-level students visit the Sunshine Care Community every month. They take Montessori materials for interactive activities with the residents. CMS has also adopted a beach in Solana Beach for periodic clean ups after which families get together for a potluck. Last year, the students raised over $2,000 for the World Wildlife Fund. The fifth levels researched philanthropic organizations and made presentations to the school community, who then voted on which one to support. Each classroom studied an endangered animal. The fundraiser was called “change for change.” The classroom that collected the most change had the stuffed panda live in their classroom for the next two weeks. CMS also takes part in food drives, and this year, some students will be helping at local food banks. It is important to the board of directors and staff that students have the opportunity to be involved in activities beyond the classroom. A child’s lifelong love of learning begins with
an authentic Montessori education in a peaceful, spacious environment. At CMS, children ages 2.5 to 11 transition from concrete activities to advanced abstract thinking. Highly respected in North San Diego for over 25 years and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CMS is a full member of the American Montessori Society. “The key Montessori philosophy is fostering the children’s enthusiasm for learning,” said Adela Corrales, Head of School. The school provides additional instruction in music, Spanish, art, physical education, and technology. Montessori learning materials invite discovery and grow with the child, containing multiple levels of challenge. “We are a collaborative community where older students serve as role models for our younger students,” said Adela. “Students are a part of a community, not just a school. We believe in educating the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and social.” Small class sizes and a team-teaching approach help students feel comfortable and engaged. Elementary classes have just 10 students per teacher and early childhood classes have 12 students per teacher. Each classroom is led by two to four AMS-credentialed teachers, so students can draw from the strengths of multiple teachers. For parents looking for the best learning environment for their child, a personal tour of the school is highly recommended. Adela said, “Call us for a tour and we will personally show you around the campus, introduce you to staff, and answer any questions you might have about our curriculum and our students’ success.” ¢

DOG TRAINING PROFILE
Total K9 TRaining Bridging the Gap between People and Their Canine Companions by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photos provided by Total K9 Training
S
hannon Anderson has over 25 years of hands-on experience handling and training animals. For 20 of those years, she worked as an animal care specialist for SeaWorld San Diego. “I trained animals for husbandry procedures (medical exams like blood samples and ultrasounds) as well as working with animals that were injured, ill, or pregnant,” recalled Shannon. About 15 years ago, Shannon started focusing on professionally training dogs. During that time, she was a volunteer for the San Diego Sheriff Department Search and Rescue K9 Unit with her own German Shepard dog, Sage. “I am still active volunteering for the Sheriff Department helping the new handlers and their pups with general obedience training and agility work as needed,” explained Shannon. With an exceptional resume and impressive educational background – graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in Psychology – Shannon started her own dog-training business, Total K9 Training, in 2006. “I wanted to start working with families to help bridge the gap between humans and dogs,” stated Shannon. “I am not a franchise company and pride myself on my educational background and practical life experience.”

Today, Total K9 Training works with all breeds and ages of dogs while offering private in-home training, specializing in families with children, group obedience classes, and specialized training. “I believe in blending private training with the added distraction work of group classes to help families reach their individual goals for their new puppy,” shared Shannon. “I blend positive reinforcement with balanced humane corrections to help teach the puppy what the house rules are, and I draw on several different approaches to match each client’s needs and goals.” Total K9 Training also offers certification for therapy dog work and more advanced obedience and tricks workshops. “I have trained multiple dogs that are now successful therapy dogs bringing joy to people all over San Diego,” Shannon shared. Total K9 Training has the capacity to work with families, specifically children – something that sets it apart from others in its industry. “I truly enjoy working with families with children,” said Shannon, “and I have many age-appropriate games and activities for the children to learn which helps provide appropriate interactions between the children and their new puppy.”

Abraxas Garden Project
ROTARY CLUB DONATES FRUIT TREES TO POWAY SCHOOL photos by James R. Kaspar
L
ast month, over 30 members of the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club attended the dedication of the new Abraxas Orchard in the school’s Community Garden. Rancho Bernardo Rotary recently donated 14 fruit trees to the garden. Abraxas Principal Alain Henry welcomed Rotary Club members, students, and staff to the event, explaining Abraxas’ commitment to providing personalized educational experiences for all of its students. “The donation of these trees and the expansion of the Community Garden is a perfect example of the non-traditional, cross-discipline experience that we value here at Abraxas,” Henry explained. “The orchard will expand the amount and types of produce our students grow and donate to the community.” Rotary President Michael Fuqua thanked Abraxas students and staff for their planning and labor – especially their digging the holes
for the trees. Fuqua noted, “This project exemplifies Rotary International’s Making a Difference initiative where every Rotarian, worldwide – all 1.2 million of us – will plant a tree in our communities this year. We are excited to kick off this initiative with Abraxas High’s Garden Project.” Ten student speakers explained the history of the Community Garden to the audience. Abraxas teachers Bob Lutticken and Robert Saxton have led the work in
the Community Garden since its inception in 2015. Lutticken brought a special family connection to the dedication ceremony, as his mother Judy is an active member of the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo. Rotarian Joe Max, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the trees were planted, Abraxas Leadership students and their teacher, Carole De Bruin, conducted tours of the garden. ¢

WINTER
LIGHTS Enjoy the Sights and Lights this Season in the Best-Decorated Local Neighborhoods by LAINEY KRAL
A
s the weather turns colder, San Diegans pull boxes out of storage and get ready to brighten up the winter season. The tradition of decorating homes with electric lights began taking off in the 1960s as a next step from decorated Christmas trees, and has since spread around the world. Colorful holiday and seasonal decorations can be found in most San Diegan neighborhoods, but some streets stand out for their over-the-top festive displays. Wait until the sun goes down and bring the whole family for a tour of one – or more – of these twinkling destinations.

You CAN Afford to Downsize! by CYNTHIA ELIZONDO
M
ost Californians are familiar with the 1978 California tax law reform known as Proposition 13. This law changed the way the state assesses property taxes, and made it possible for older homeowners to remain in their homes on fixed incomes, even as the home’s market value skyrocketed. But it causes problems when they decide it’s time to downsize. One of the most common frustrations I hear from clients is that as their children grow up and leave the nest, they find they no longer need all the bedrooms, bathrooms, and square feet they once did. They say they would love to be able to downsize to a more manageable home size; however, since property values have increased so much since they purchased their home, they can’t afford a smaller home, since the property taxes could be thousands more each year. The good news I tell them about is a lesser-
known tax reform, voted into law in 1988, known as Proposition 60. This proposition allows for homeowners over the age of 55 to transfer their Prop-13 base-year value to their new home, so long as it is of equal or lesser value than the one being replaced. Before this proposition, you might have had to pay higher property taxes, even if your new home was worth much less than your current home. There are some limitations to keep in mind. Most importantly, this transfer can only be used once in a lifetime, and that includes your spouse. So if you and your spouse own a home together, the one transfer counts for both of you. Second, the transfer can only be used

on primary residences and the replacement home must be purchased within two years of selling the first. Finally, if you are looking to move to a different county, only certain counties will accept the transfer, so be sure to check to ensure yours is on the list. If you have been thinking about downsizing but thought you couldn’t afford the new property taxes, talk to your Realtor. You may be surprised by how much money you can actually save. ¢
