Arshia Alenaddaf Solves Community Problems Through Architectural Design
by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Forever Photography by Liberty
Arshia Alenaddaf moved from Las Vegas in 2017, bringing a love for all things architectural. Attending a magnet/technical school as a freshman with an architecture major, here at Poway High School (PHS), he wanted more offerings available, so he co-founded an Architecture club – The American Institute of Architecture Students. PHS is now one of only three chapters in San Diego, and the club serves to bolster Arshia’s favorite classes like math, civil engineering, and architecture and architectural design.
President of this AIAS club – an independent, student-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing unmatched progressive programs, information, and resources critical to architecture and the experience of education – Arshia loves the principle of student-run architectural projects. Using the AutoDesk Revit program, the first year the club created an urban fast food restaurant, and a sit-down restaurant the next year using the same program. “In our second year we competed in the SDSU Sustainable House Competition, in which we placed second and won $300. Our design was made to follow the Universal Design laws and Habitat for Humanity.” Finding the most inspiration from failures, Arshia believes they only assist in making better future improvements.
This year they’re doing a Freedom by Design project, where they must find a community problem that can be solved through architectural design. They’ve been given the opportunity to redesign the floor plan of the Poway Library. “We want to make the project an ultra-community project where all societies like the Photography Team, Poway Art Club, and Future Farmers of America can contribute to our project.” This project is part of Arshia’s volunteer work, along with Poway Robotics Team Spyder where they showcase their robot to younger students. The AIAS Club is interested in finding an architect mentor to assist through their Freedom by Design project. “I am looking for feedback and support on our Architecture Club project,” Arshia said. “When the time comes.”
“I have learned the importance of the environment people work in,” Arshia confirmed, “both the effect that the environment has on a person’s mentality and its effect on the organization.” Future plans include a B.S. in Architecture, followed by a M.S. in Structural Engineering. With the goal of becoming a CEO of a real estate corporation that uses modern technology to improve peoples’ lives and the ecosystem simultaneously, Arshia Alenaddaf is using every tool available in making the world better for everyone.
