Vol. 1, No. 6 TM
Publisher Derrick Breaux
92067’s 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide
I
like things that you can touch. If I can’t touch it, I at least like to be able to see it. It should come as no surprise to the people that know me that my world revolves around building things. Whether it is creating magazines, overseeing the launch of a website, starting and growing companies, remodeling a home or office space, or building a house from the ground up – I’m all in! Seeing the final product that wouldn’t exist otherwise is very rewarding. Even as a child, I would find simple pleasure in drawing floor plans of homes. In my mind, I was actually building those houses – or I was going to build them when I grew up. Although more than a few of my house designs didn’t contain some of the bare essentials that adults are accustomed to – like closets and storage areas – they certainly had amazing game rooms, huge garages, and bathtubs the size of small swimming pools. As it turns out, perhaps my 10-year-old imagination was onto something. Note to self: Revisit original concept of amazing game room (aka man cave) and huge garage (aka my favorite part of a house). We’ll table the bathtub discussion for a later time. You can definitely touch real estate. For nearly a decade in the early 2000s, I owned a real estate and mortgage company that had 97 licensed agents at its peak. Building a company from scratch to a team of 113 (counting the support personnel) was an incredible experience to say the least. I developed a profound respect for the real estate industry along the journey while overseeing thousands Derrick Breaux of transactions. I am still very close to many of the incredible professionals that Publisher made up our team. Simply put, I respect what REALTORS® do and how hard they work for their clients and the community. I value the many steps that take place during a real estate transaction. This issue of 92067 Magazine contains a very special 1st Annual REALTOR® Guide (see page 37). To be honest, I can’t believe we didn’t do this special issue sooner. There are many elements that go into building a community, and active local real estate professionals are definitely one of the key components. They are often a part of the community themselves, walking their kids to school or sitting next to us at soccer games. Many of them sponsor school programs and donate time and money to local charities and organizations. But perhaps the most important thing is that they are working with us on what is considered to be the single largest investment of our life – buying or selling our homes. While we often see the faces of our local REALTOR® celebrities in the pages of this magazine, on the real estate signs around town, on the ballpark fences, or even on the shopping carts watching us as we make the dreadful decision to go with paper or plastic, I wanted to take it one step further. Real estate is definitely hyper-local, and this REALTOR® Guide gives you a glimpse into the individual movers and shakers of our local real estate industry. The intention of the REALTOR® Guide is to create a personal introduction to the actual person – not just the REALTOR® – that dedicates their career to overseeing our local real estate market. I hope that you enjoy getting to know your REALTORS®. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them around town at Starbucks, on the fields, at the schools, or during their open houses. They are constantly working in front of and behind the scenes to keep their fingers on the real estate market pulse and see that our communities continue to move forward.

his past June, Cielo resident Emma Ritto, who will be a freshman at Canyon Crest Academy, had the opportunity to sing at the prestigous Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. After her middle school music teacher nominated her for an audition, Emma was chosen to perform as a junior finalist soprano in the Honors Performance Series. When she first found out she was accepted as a finalist for the performance, Emma recalled, “I screamed with joy!” Ever gracious, Emma was not only happy for herself but also happy to revel in the company of the other attendees. She commented, “I was most excited about meeting all of the other finalists and sharing the whole experience with them.”

Emma's passion for the performing arts began when she was just three years old and she appeared in a kids’ version of the musical Annie at the RSF Community Center. Emma stated, “I have been interested in the performing arts ever since, and my future goal is to become a film actress!” She has since performed as numerous characters in various shows including Simba in The Lion King, Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz, and most notably as the lead Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie with the Rancho Santa Fe Players. Emma even qualified for her Screen Actors Guild eligibility and in 2016 she will appear in two different programs on the Nickelodeon channel: "100 Things To Do Before High School" and “Instant Mom.” In addition to her singing and acting abilities, Emma plays the trumpet, the piano, and a little bit of guitar. She even plays on the girls’ basketball and volleyball teams. Emma admits she has a passion for writing. She revealed, “English is my favorite subject in school and I love to write stories in my spare time. I really enjoy using my imagination to create new worlds and to tell stories.” She certainly won’t have to make up stories about her own life, because Emma is already a star heading toward an exciting future.

he Helen Woodward Animal Center’s (HWAC) 27th Annual Spring Fling Gala treated 390 guests to “An Evening on the Boardwalk.” The lavish affair was held in the Fairbanks Village Plaza in Rancho Santa Fe thanks to the hospitality of Joe and Terri Davis. Guests were greeted by some friendly canine companions before enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the silent auction area. Following the silent auction attendees were served some of the finest cuisine from 18 of the top restaurants in the city. The sold-out event ultimately raised a net of over $265,000. All proceeds support the pets and programs at HWAC. “I am always inspired when I see that many people come together for the purpose of changing the world for orphan pets,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Center President and CEO Mike Arms. “Every single contributor, from the guests to the restaurants to the volunteers to the sponsors to the donors, all made a difference. It was a beautiful night.” For more information on HWAC visit www.animalcenter.org. ¢

Winning Robotics LOCAL ROBOTICS TEAM HAS SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR AT PROGRAMMING COMPETITION
M
ore than 75 students from across California recently participated in the 8th Annual International Autonomous Robotics Competition (iAROC). Out of 18 teams, R. Roger Rowe Middle School’s rookie team, the Eagles-Intergalactic Dragons, took third place overall. The competition, which was hosted by The League of Amazing Programmers, was held at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park and gave students the opportunity to program Roomba-like robots to compete in a series of races, challenges, and mazes without any human intervention. The challenges covered a range of difficulties, catering to the skill levels of the 10- to 18-year-old contestants who had anywhere from a few months to several years of programming experience. The Eagles-Intergalactic Dragons took first place in the Mars Navigation Challenge, one of three main
challenges. Winners for each challenge were determined by a panel of judges. R. Roger Rowe Middle School’s robotics team was composed of DJ Nelson, Justin Yu, James Busby, Lucas Luwa, and Daniel Scuba. They took home a $250 award for winning third place overall. “Wow, what an experience! I am so proud of our rookie team. We can’t wait till next year,” expressed team mentor David Werner. Students chose their own teams and were supported throughout the competition by skilled adult mentors. The week prior to the competition, contestants attended a free week-long camp where teams made final adjustments to their robots in preparation for the weekendlong event. For more information about R. Roger Rowe’s Middle School’s robotics program contact David Warner at dwarner@rsf.k12.ca.us. Debunking First-Aid Myths FOOD IS BEST EATEN, NOT USED FOR INJURIES Back to school can be a whirlwind of sports and new activities that result in minor injuries. Here are a few first-aid myths that may do more harm than good. Put butter on a burn. First-degree burns – the skin is red, but still feeling normal – can be treated at home, but don’t pull out the butter dish. Butter may do wonders for your mashed potatoes, but it does nothing for burns except add foreign particles and increase the risk of infection. Reach for a cool cloth and a frozen bag of vegetables instead. Minor burns need to be cooled, so run cool water over the burned area for at least 10 minutes and then apply an over-the-counter antibiotic. Throw back your head if you have a nose bleed. Never tilt your head back to stop a nose bleed as it will only make the blood flow down the throat into the lungs or into the stomach, which may cause vomiting. To stop a bloody nose, lean slightly forward and pinch your nose just below the bony part where glasses sit using your thumb and index finger. Press firmly for no less than five to 10 minutes. If a bloody nose follows an accident or injury to the head, seek medical attention immediately. Also contact your primary care doctor if you have frequent nosebleeds or if they are difficult to control.
by LAWRENCE SCHLITT, M.D.; Scripps Clinic, Del Mar
Apply cold only to a twisted knee or ankle. How you treat a twisted ankle or knee depends on the stage of the injury. If you can immediately treat the area, use RICE: rest, ice for the first 24 hours, compress gently with a bandage, and elevate the twisted area over the level of your heart. Applying ice reduces swelling and pain and limits any internal bleeding at the injury site. To use ice effectively, place it on the affected area in a thin towel for 20 minutes at a time. Apply heat to an injury after the first few days, when the inflammation has decreased and increasing blood flow to the area can provide healing nutrients. Your primary care doctor can help evaluate the injury. Apply a cold steak to a black eye. Keep the steak for dinner and bring out that bag of frozen vegetables instead. Your frozen steak may have bacteria on it, so covering your eye with it is not recommended. Instead of steak apply a crushed ice pack or the frozen vegetable package to the affected area for 10 minutes at a time. If the eyeball itself is damaged or if the vision is affected, see your doctor. Clean a cut or scrape with hydrogen peroxide. Using hydrogen peroxide to clean an injury can actually harm the tissue and delay healing. The best way to treat a minor cut or scrape is to cool and clean it with cool water, rinsing thoroughly to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria. Protect the injury with a bandage and see your doctor for a wound that is large, deep, or bleeding nonstop. ¢

Luncheon for the League FORMER ALRSD PRESIDENT HONORED BY STATE SENATOR
T
he Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito (ALRSD) recently held its June luncheon and installation of new officers at the Morgan Run County Club. The highlight of the afternoon was the honorary passing of the gavel from the outgoing President Roberta Waterman to Lois Green, who will be taking over the position and beginning her duties this month. In honor of the work she did as president, Roberta was recognized for her leadership skills and community service by the office of State Senator Patricia Bates from the 36th Senatorial District. Donna Cleary, a representative of the Senator’s office, presented Roberta with a plaque and read a California State Resolution. This luncheon was the first step for the new ALRSD members, who will become busy in the upcoming months with the duties that come with their positions. In the oncoming months ALRSD will collaborate with six other Assistant League chapters to provide back-to-school clothing and school supplies for 700 children residing in Camp Pendleton in August. On projects that are occurring later in the fall, ALRSD member Katie Fish shared, “This fall, Operation School Bell, our Chapter’s signature philanthropic program, will provide over 900 eligible north county school children with new back-to-school clothes and shoes, funded by proceeds from our Encinitas Thrift Shop.” The ALRSD is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that serves various North County communities. They strive to make a positive
difference in the lives of children and adults affected by trauma, violence, and poverty. For more information visit www.alrsd.org. ¢

Lifetime Achievement Award RESIDENT HONORED FOR HIS LIFESAVING WORK AS A TRAUMA SURGEON
R
ancho Santa Fe resident A. Brent Eastman, M.D., was presented with the 2015 Neil Morgan Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement by LEAD San Diego at their 13th Annual Visionary Awards. Nearly 900 business and community leaders attended the event to honor those who make a difference throughout San Diego and beyond. Dr. Eastman is a general, vascular, and trauma surgeon who serves as chief medical officer of Scripps Health and is the N. Paul Whittier chair of trauma at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. One of Dr. Eastman’s most notable accomplishments is his founding of the San Diego County Trauma System, which is now 30 years old and regarded as a model system worldwide. Since its development in 1984, the percentage of preventable trauma deaths in San Diego County has made a significant decline from 22 percent to just one percent.
In addition to this major contribution, Dr. Eastman is also the co-creator of the Scripps Medical Response Team. The response team is made up of doctors, nurses, and support staff who travel around the world as needed to aid those who are affected by devastating natural disasters. Dr. Eastman has provided hands-on support to the team, traveling with them to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Dr. Eastman was one of three Rancho Santa Fe residents to be awarded by LEAD San Diego this year. LEAD San Diego has provided education and dialogue on issues of regional importance for 33 years, helping a cross-section of community leaders become more informed, civically engaged, and active participants in projects that positively impact their communities. he Moss family – Josh, Kristin, and children JT and Farren – enjoy the outdoors. They camp, hike, fish, surf, swim in the ocean, and explore national parks. "Downtime and fresh air are our ingredients for a healthy lifestyle,” affirmed Kristin Moss. They moved to The Covenant in Rancho Santa Fe four years ago. Being in a rural community allows them to care for their large family: two dogs, a giant tortoise, 10 chickens, a fish, and a hermit crab. They had another tortoise but when both tortoises escaped to return

to the neighbor's house, where they lived for 25 years, only one was found. Kristin shared of the loss, "If anyone sees a 100-pound tortoise meandering around the Ranch, please let us know." Their children have summer birthdays. JT is eight. "He loves anything related to outdoor survival," mentioned Kristin. Farren – named after Kristin's mom's maiden name – is six. She's active in sports, like JT, and loves singing and being in school plays. Both kids attend R. Roger Rowe Elementary. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to send our kids to such an extraordinary public school and to be able to help make it a great place," added Kristin. This year she’s co-chair of the Rancho Santa Fe Education Foundation. Kristin’s dad was a teacher so she likes to honor her parents, who were always involved in the school and community. Josh and Kristin met while camping and surfing in Baja. “Life is decidedly less exciting these days,” Kristin joked of those carefree times. Josh holds an MBA from UCLA School of Business. He is the cofounder of EAM Investors, an institutionally focused investment management firm, and is the lead portfolio manager for international products. Kristin holds an MBA from Stanford and is a management executive working with several start-ups in the entrepreneurial finance area. They annually visit Kristin's family in Boston. Kristin has 41 first cousins. "The kids love to visit their cousins, eat clawed lobster, and cheer for the Red Sox," she added. Lately they’ve wondered if the kids would be Celtics or Lakers fans. Back home they’re grateful for the slower pace of life, which allows them to be more together. No matter the team they cheer on.

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Garden Club Sponsors Insect Festival
The Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club recently sponsored the San Diego Botanic Garden’s Insect Festival, giving guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with all sorts of creepy-crawlies. The one-of-a-kind festival, which featured thousands of different insects, attracted bug-enthusiasts of all ages. Local bug experts were available throughout the event to answer questions, and more than 20 educational booths were provided to instruct and entertain children and adults alike. In addition to live insects such as Madagascar hissing cockroaches, the festival included live lizards and snakes. Children were also treated to interactive arts and crafts and bug collections. Guests who were especially interested in getting the full experience had the chance to taste cooked mealworm larvae in teriyaki and barbeque flavors. RSF Garden Club Executive Director Erin Browne shared, “We were excited for the opportunity to support an event that encompasses our mission of promoting charitable horticulture and conservation in Rancho Santa Fe and surrounding communities.” For more information visit www.rsfgardenclub.org.
92067 Restaurant Recognized for Wine List
Wine Spectator released their list of winners for the 2015 Restaurant Awards – which honors outstanding eateries with extraordinary wine lists – and one 92067 establishment made the cut. This year, the program recognized more than 3,600 restaurants from all over the globe. Local eatery Mille Fleurs was among those recognized for their available wines, cuisine, and overall establishment. To determine who qualified for an award, Wine Spectator carefully assessed each candidate. This assessment included rigorous on-site inspections of the wine program, cellar, service, ambiance, and cuisine of the restaurants. A total of 2,563 eateries earned the program’s Award of Excellence, which recognized a well-presented and diverse wine list. Another 973 earned the Best of Award of Excellence for offering a wine list of 350 or more quality selections. For more information visit www.winespectator.com.

Local Ponies Benefit from Grant
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recently awarded Laughing Pony Rescue a grant to fund the training of two ponies – Bonnie and Clyde – that were rescued by the local organization. Bonnie and Clyde’s original owner could no longer afford their care and reached out to Laughing Pony for aid. Since taking them into their care the organization realized that the duo would need a special skill in order to be considered adoptable. The grant provided by the ASPCA will therefore be used to fund the ponies’ new skill: cart pulling. Training sessions will be open to the public every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. For more information on training sessions contact laughingponyrescue@gmail.com. Assembly Passes Bill Honoring Tony Gwynn
A portion of Interstate 15 could potentially become known as the Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway due to Assembly member Brian Maienschein’s Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 63, which passed unanimously. The bill has passed from the Assembly to the State Senate, where it will be heard in Committee at the end of August. “I am extremely pleased that my bill passed out of the Assembly today,” said Brian. “For many San Diegans like me, Tony Gwynn is the epitome of San Diego Padres Baseball. I am honored to present this bill as we commemorate the one year anniversary of Tony Gwynn’s passing.” Assemblymember Brian Maienschein represents the 77th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which covers communities such as Rancho Santa Fe, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, and more. The bill aims to honor the baseball player, who played on the Padres for 20 years, by naming the stretch of Interstate from Pomerado Rd. and West Bernardo Dr. to Scripps Poway Pkwy. and Mercy Rd. Renovated Library Patio Opens
Thanks to the generous funding of the San Diego County Library and Director Jose Aponte, the Rancho Santa Fe Library has a new patio for guests to enjoy. The project, which began June 15 and ended July 24, was on the Rancho Santa Fe Library Guild’s wish list for several years. The Guild’s goal was to create a welcoming space where visitors could relax, read, and use the library Wi-Fi in a beautiful environment. Guests can now look forward to new bench and table seating – complete with umbrellas – which was provided by a bequest from the Nan and Charles Werner Estate. Nan Werner decided to give this gift to the library prior to her passing in 2014. “We are grateful to her for her service to the Guild and, while she is dearly missed, her legacy will live on in the beauty of this patio,” said Director of Membership and Development Susan Appleby. For more information visit www.rsflibraryguild.org.
Local Girl Scouts Earn Gold Award
Laura Moon and Rachel Seidel, graduates of Canyon Crest Academy and Rancho Santa Fe residents, have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award – the organization’s highest honor – for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action in their community. In order to qualify for their award, each girl had to develop a project that made a contribution to their community. For her project, Laura saw a lack of opportunities for student musicians to perform for anyone other than their parents, so she started a series of community concerts that allowed youth to perform in different venues for diverse audiences. Rachel educated women and children at the Family Recovery Center about nutrition, exercise, and smart shopping. She earned funds for her project by recycling. Laura and Rachel are among 43 Girl Scouts in San Diego and Imperial Valley who earned the Gold Award this year. Just five percent of Girl Scouts nationwide achieve this level of recognition.

Meditation and the power of cosmic energy are the source of the artist’s creative expression. Daniel is from the Czech Republic and divides his time between San Diego and Europe. He was awarded the Laureate of European Medal of Franz Kafka from the European Circle of Franz Kafka in 2004 – past recipients of this award include Steven Spielberg and Normal Mailer. Q& A
with RSF Rotary Club Co-President
Jamie Palizban
For those who might not know, what is a Rotary Club? Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary Club of Rancho Santa Fe was founded by a group of Rancho Santa Fe residents in 1959. There were more than 25 charter members. More than 50 years later this Rotary Club has grown and we have spread our wings and grown our membership to over 80 members. We are proud of the many organizations and projects we have supported through the years and look forward to many years of supporting those in need. What types of activities is the Rotary Club involved with? RSF Rotary Club has projects on community, local, and international levels. Our areas of focus are: Community level: Community development and support Local and international level: Child health, education, and literacy International level: Water, sanitations, and basic human needs Locally, we have engaged in various activities to serve organizations such as Women Resource Center, San Pasqual Academy, Just in Time Foster Kids, San Diego Children’s Museum, Miracle Babies, and several military platforms. Rotary is an international organization with local club representation in most countries. Our club’s international projects include Water for Sudan, Mexico Blanket Drive, and supporting several orphanages. Do you hold fundraising events throughout the year? We try to have one project per month. Our biggest fundraiser is the Taste Of Rancho Santa Fe, which will take place Oct. 11 this year. Many local Rancho Santa Fe restaurants provide sampling of their culinary excellence. Top wineries, breweries, and vodka vendors serve a sampling of their top products. Money is raised for 11 charities. It is a first class event and we have a lot of fun putting it together.
F
or over 50 years the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary Club has aimed to provide their community with humanitarian services. They also maintain a strong global presence, proving that their effort to serve others has no geographical borders. With their firm belief in putting others first the club strives to uphold their mission to provide aid for those who need it most. :::: COVER FEATURE What was the inspiration behind having two club presidents? Being a Rancho Santa Fe Rotary President is a lot of responsibility and since Heather Manion and I wanted to do a good job and also balance our full-time work responsibilities, we decided to join forces. This is the first time our Rotary District has had two presidents serve one club and we have a feeling that it will not be the last. Heather and I complement each other. I am the organizer and the visionary and Heather is the force behind most of the projects. Our goal is to bring our club up a notch, do some good, and have fun in the process. How many members does your club currently have? We are currently at 80 members. For those interested in joining, how does someone become a member? How else can people contribute? Our members are introduced or invited initially. There is an application and board approval process as well. We are looking for individuals who not only believe in “Service above Self,” but who also are willing to bring their resources to serve our club. We meet
weekly and get involved in projects, so as you can see we become close friends.
RSF Community Center, Senior Center, and the Historical Society.
The best way to sponsor our club is to become a sponsor for Taste of Rancho Santa Fe. Many levels of sponsorship are available.

We are collaborating with the Del Mar Rotary Club to accomplish this wonderful project. A special luncheon is scheduled for Dec. 8. Taste of Rancho Santa Fe: Our biggest fundraiser of the year is Taste of Rancho Santa Fe, which sells out every year. What is the most exciting aspect of being a Rotarian? For me the most exciting aspect of being a Rotarian is how much we can do as a team not only locally but also internationally. Rotary’s overall contribution to the world is now in the billions. That is exciting! Polio is almost wiped off of planet earth because of the efforts and commitment of Rotarians. Where and when does your club meet? We meet every Tuesday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the RSF Golf Club. We do have dark days due to holidays or projects so check our calendar on www.rsfrotary.com.
What has been most memorable about working with the RSF Rotary Club? My most memorable times are the projects that I have included my kids in over the past 10 years. They have gone to orphanages in Mexico, passed blankets to poor families in Ensenada, and helped with gardening projects on the grounds of San Pasqual Academy. My oldest daughter Atusa just joined our club without me asking her – I think that is awesome!

Heather Manion
What is it like to be a part of the RSF Rotary Club? We are a dedicated group who support collaboration in order to achieve common goals through mutual knowledge and skill sharing. It is a door opener for members to meet leaders and professionals in different fields and work as a team contributing their specific knowledge, skills, and experience to achieve a common goal. RSF Rotary is like a family and we are all deeply committed to each other’s personal growth and success.
What kind of atmosphere can be experienced at your club’s weekly meetings? Are guests welcome? All members and their guests feel welcome at our weekly meetings that are not only interesting and informational but are a lot of fun and include a great RSF Golf Club lunch. We encourage the attendance of family, friends, and anyone who is interested in learning more about our club.
Please tell us more about how your club contributes on an international level. Each Rotary club contributes to help end polio annually with a portion of our dues. Bill Gates said, “Rotary continues to be the heart and soul of polio eradication.” You can learn more about it at www.endpolionow.org. Our local club’s most recent international projects include Project Amigo in Colima where we annually pay tuition for several high school and college students. We provide groceries and blankets each year to the Rosarito Beach Rotary Club and jointly pass out these goods to underserved families picked by the local church. We were instrumental in securing and moving discarded mobile modules to Rosarito, ultimately helping to build a school. We secured funds and built a Red Cross medical clinic in Rosarito Beach. We purchased an ambulance to be stationed some 200 miles from Rosarito Beach so rural wait times for medical assistance would not be delayed for several hours. We have partnered with Project Mercy to construct a house in eastern Tijuana where 30 or so members drove down and spent two days constructing a home set on a foundation poured by the local Playas Rotary Club. This provided much needed housing for a homeless family.

Can you give us an example of a current project? Rotary is currently partnering with the Rosarito Red Cross and one of our members, Bill Herrick, to purchase a “jaws of life” tool so accident victims along the roads in Baja can be extricated from crashed vehicles. RSF Rotary consistently funds international relief teams for disaster relief in many foreign countries (Haiti, etc.) and most recently in Nepal for earthquake relief. Our group has taken up collections and purchased a ShelterBox to be sent down to Haiti for their earthquake relief.
What else would you like to share with 92067 Magazine readers about your experience as a Rotarian? Over the years I have belonged to several philanthropic groups including Junior League of San Diego, Children’s Home Society, and the Cystic Fibrosis Society. I continue to volunteer monthly with the USO in San Diego. Each of those wonderful groups gave me valuable training and appreciation toward my present charitable passion: Rotary. I am now working with a diversified, organized group of community leaders where I am constantly learning new ways to improve my community. Each of my fellow members in Rotary inspires me to serve this community, the County of San Diego, and other countries in countless ways.
What has been most memorable about working with the RSF Rotary Club? Water for Sudan was a vision in the mind of a the Rochester New York Rotary. One of RSF Rotary’s energetic members took up the cause and our club unified to make alleviating the water crisis in the Sudan our mantra. I became a West Coast board member, speaker, and fundraiser for Water for Sudan to build self-sustaining wells throughout this African nation. Within two years this cause became an International Rotary project. I learned about individual well sponsorships, grant writing, and matching grants. I know that Rotary saved lives and turned the tide in South Sudan. I am proud to have been part of this amazing project.

fter a lengthy career in Major League Baseball, Jamie Moyer, his wife Karen, and their children wanted to settle in a family-friendly community where they could create a lifetime of memories. “This is really the first time we’ve been able to settle as a family, so it feels amazing to be surrounded by great friends in a wonderful environment like Rancho Santa Fe,” revealed Karen. With Jamie now retired from professional baseball, both he and Karen are devoted to the foundation they created to help children across the country. According to Jamie and Karen, the Moyer Foundation started in 2000 with the mission to aid children in distress. Along the way the foundation created Camp Erin and Camp Mariposa. “Camp Erin is the largest national network of free bereavement camps for children and teens with 46 locations nationwide, including a camp serving children in every Major League Baseball city. Camp Mariposa is a first-of-its-kind free camp for children ages nine to 12 impacted by substance abuse in their families. There are eight locations nationwide,” said Karen. Both camps have provided support to children in the San Diego area since 2008. Jamie and Karen encourage anyone who is interested in helping out either through donations or volunteer

opportunities to visit www.moyerfoundation.org. “For example, our 9th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic will take place Oct. 23 to 24. There are many ways to get involved with this event,” related Karen. Jamie and Karen were recently recognized for their dedication to the community with the 2015 Community Spotlight Award. The award was presented by LEAD San Diego, an organization that aims to help develop and recognize civically engaged leaders. “We were completely honored to be in a room full of amazing people all committed to making the San Diego community a better place. We look forward to learning more about the needs in the community and how we can continue to help,” stated Karen. In addition to their commitment to the Moyer Foundation, Jamie and Karen are parents to eight children, with two sons playing professional baseball, two daughters in college, and four kids in grade school. “We are an active family and all the kids are athletes,” stated Jamie. In their spare time Jamie enjoys gardening and Karen loves to cook. The family can often be seen together at the San Diego Zoo, the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, and Dog Beach.

“We are writing to express our pleasure with our real estate agent Connie Sundstrom, who represented us in our recent purchase of a vacation/second home in San Diego. Connie guided us through the entire process, from loan pre-qualification to searching for a home, to negotiating the offer and closing the deal. We credit Connie with a smooth, stress-free home-buying experience. Connie communicated with us by phone, in person, and by email each step of the way. The entire transaction Connie was organized, thorough, and we found her to be knowledgeable about the aspects of real estate that surpassed just the legalities of buying and selling properties. She was always pleasant and expedient in returning our calls. We never could have found our dream vacation home without her. We are so pleased with Connie’s service and her expertise and will highly recommend her to anyone looking for a highly effective and reliable real estate agent. – Nazih and Malak, San Diego

Increasing the Odds FIRST RESPONSE AGENCIES LEAD LOCAL CPR CAMPAIGN TO RAISE SURVIVAL RATE photo by SOUL OF PHOTOGRAPHY
S
udden cardiac arrest (SCA) can occur at any time without warning. Nationwide statistics indicate that an individual only has a six percent survival rate from a SCA occurrence; when first responders are involved, that percentage increases to 11 percent. The percentage could increase substantially if more bystanders were equipped with the knowledge to perform CPR right when the victim experiences SCA. Knowing this, County Service Area 17 (CSA 17) first response agencies – namely the Del Mar Fire Department, Encinitas Fire Department, Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, and Solana Beach Fire Department – have engaged in a hands-only CPR campaign that follows the American Heart Association’s campaign. “The goal is to empower the public, as immediate CPR can increase the survival chances by 25 percent,” said CSA 17 Emergency Services Coordinator Mary Murphy. “Way too often bystanders do not offer aid to a patient because they can’t remember all the steps to
traditional CPR, are afraid of doing it incorrectly, or are wary of giving mouth-to-mouth breaths to a stranger. The goal of hands-only CPR is to simplify the process and encourage more people to attempt life-saving measures in emergency situations.” CSA 17 agencies have been providing free CPR education to schools, churches, boys and girl scouts, and any group that has made a request to the departments. They also have a strong presence at local events and at the Santa Fe Fire Protection District’s open houses. The agencies were proud to announce that in 2014 they had a survival rate of 16 percent as verified by the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), a nationally recognized database dedicated to tracking SCA outcomes. So far this year the agencies have seen 36 percent of their CPR patients survive to be discharged home. To schedule a hands-only CPR class contact Mary Murphy at 760-685-6402. ¢

Seacoast Community Church is Committed to Spreading Love – Locally and Abroad by LYDIA COBB

n the heart of Encinitas is the soul of an outreach-oriented congregation. Founded in 1988, Seacoast Community Church is all about love. “Love God with passion. Love one another like family,” shared Lead Pastor Dale Burke, “Then go and love our city and the world.” The church exists to share the life and love of Jesus in Encinitas and beyond through its major initiatives: Love Encinitas and Love Africa. Love Encinitas connects the church with community service. Dale elaborated, “We needed to go to the city, to the schools, and ask them, ‘how can we serve you?’” Beyond Our Walls is a
church fund dedicated to the needs outside the church, with plans to double our initiatives to love Encinitas this year. Seacoast leaders met with Encinitas city council members and school administrators. What resulted are partnerships with Sunset High and Ocean Knoll Elementary. Church teams host student BBQs and awards programs at the high school “just to say we’re proud of you and we’re here for you,” added Dale. When they learned that Ocean Knoll needed some basic upkeep, the church recruited volunteers, joined by Sunset High students, to beautify the campus during Ocean Knoll Serve Day. A young church volunteer organized gourmet lunches for the Encinitas Sheriff’s Department to show love and appreciation. The following week, the congregation organized 300 compassion bags for homeless people in North County. The church is also a host site for recovery group meetings, and for parenting support and life support groups for all ages. “Seacoast’s greatest strength is the congregation, its hundreds of volunteers, and young, creative, multi-talented staff team,” added Dale.

Pastor Dale Burke joined Seacoast four years ago after serving 15 years at a large church in Fullerton. Dale is adjunct faculty at his alma mater, Dallas Theological Seminary. One of his books, How to Lead and Still Have a Life is translated into several languages as part of their Love Africa initiative in pastoral leadership training. The church’s work is captured in three steps. “Encounter God in worship,” stated Dale. “Connect to serve and grow in smaller groups, then go and love our world for Christ.” He calls it putting the love of God on display – here and overseas. ¢

TIPS FOR P E V

Know Your Sunscreen Apply sunscreen to your face, ears, neck, arms, and any other areas not covered by clothing, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day – a good rule of use is one ounce every two hours. Be sure to read the label before you pick one out. Broad spectrum sunscreens – those that protect against both UVA and UVB rays – with a SPF of at least 30 are a good place to start, though higher SPFs provide more protection for longer. Always follow directions on the label and check for expiration dates. Most

sunscreens are good for up to two to three years.
2
Wear Proper Clothing Clothing can provide different levels of sun protection, depending on the fabric, color, and of course, how much skin is being covered. Dark colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants are the most protective, and tightly-woven fabrics are best. If you hold the clothing up and can see light through the fabric, you’re still getting some UV exposure.

ith the arrival of the official season of beach days and backyard barbeques, it’s likely that you’ll be spending a lot more time outside for the next few months. While you’re putting on your swimsuit or bringing out the coolers and lawn chairs, it can be easy to forget to take the necessary steps to avoid the harmful effects of the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, which is why we’ve put together a few simple tips on how to safeguard yourself and your family this summer.
3
Head for the Shade Avoiding too much direct sunlight is simple but important, especially during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV light is strongest. UV rays can reach below the water’s surface, so you can still get a burn while relaxing in the pool – and don’t forget that sun protection is necessary even on cloudy days. Protect Your Eyes, Too! Wearing a hat and sunglasses can help protect your vision, as well as cover up sensitive areas
4
that are difficult to protect with sunscreen, such as the scalp, ears, or delicate skin around the eyes. Choose a widebrimmed hat with at least two to three inches of tightly-woven fabric all the way around and a dark, non-reflective underside. Large-framed or wraparound style sunglasses are best for covering your eyes from light coming in from different angles. Before you buy check for labels that say “UV 400 protection” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” as these indicate that the sunglasses will block 99-percent of UV rays.
5
Use the UV Index Before you head out for a day in the sun, check the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website for the UV Index. The index represents the intensity of the UV rays of the sun on a scale of one to 11 to help you decide how much UV protection you’ll need for your outdoor adventure. The National Weather Service calculates the UV Index forecast daily and the EPA publishes the information, along with other recommendations for sun protection and planning sun-safe outdoor activities at www2.epa.gov/sunwise.

What is DENTIN
HYPERSENSITIVITY?
Dentin hypersensitivity, more commonly referred to as sensitive teeth, can be defined as short, sharp pains that come from exposed dentin – the layer of tissue found beneath the hard enamel that contains the inner pulp. Individuals with sensitive teeth may find that the pain can be triggered by hot, cold, sour, or sweet beverages or foods, forceful brushing or flossing, or even by cold air.
pain. In-office treatments, such as topical agents or sealants, can be applied by a dentist to help reduce sensitivity. Of course, limiting your intake of acidic foods and beverages is always recommended.
How can I avoid dentin hypersensitivity?
Excessive consumption of acidic beverages, such as orange juice or cola, can wear down hard enamel and put you at risk for dentin hypersensitivity. Limiting your consumption of acidic foods and beverages can prevent the erosion of hard enamel. Conditions such as bulimia nervosa and acid reflux also can have similar erosive effects on tooth enamel. Abrasion of the enamel from aggressive use of a toothbrush also can lead to dentin hypersensitivity. Notify your dentist if you experience tooth sensitivity. He or she can monitor the condition and can help remedy the sensitivity. To prevent worsening, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush in a circular motion. It will minimize enamel abrasion and thus reduce sensitivity. Using toothpaste containing a desensitizing agent that protects exposed dentin by blocking the tubes connected to nerves can alleviate

HORSE WHISPERER College Student Kendall Peterkin Gives Back by Helping Rehabilitate Horses by MICHELLE TREMBLAY | photo by Soul of Photography
K
endall Peterkin is passionate about caring for animals. She and her family have five dogs, three cats, and two fish. “It can get pretty hectic at times but I wouldn’t have it any other way!” admitted Kendall, who has always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Kendall is currently staying at her family’s Rancho Santa Fe home during her summer break from college. This upcoming fall she will be attending her senior year at Princeton University, where she is team captain for the women’s volleyball team. While home for the summer, Kendall's goal was to find work that involved helping animals. “Fortunately I became aware of Laughing Pony Rescue from my mom,” shared Kendall. “I was immediately interested in helping out and becoming a volunteer.” The Laughing Pony Rescue is a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates sick, abused, and abandoned horses. “The facility also provides therapeutic riding sessions for individuals and groups with high-functioning disabilities of all ages, including veterans,” noted Kendall, who seems to have a knack for caring for the horses. “I absolutely love the hands-on experiences at Laughing Pony. The goal is to give them as much love and care as possible, rehabilitate them, and train them in basic skills.” Kendall further explained that her favorite part of volunteering has been witnessing the positive changes the horses have made since their arrival at the facility. “Sadly almost every horse has had a traumatic experience, whether it be locked in a small cage for years or put in a feedlot ready to go to the slaughterhouse,” stated Kendall. “Watching the animals transform into happy, ‘laughing,’ and loving horses is a remarkable, rewarding experience.” Kendall noted that the organization is always looking for more people to get involved. “There is a Kids Day coming up on Aug. 7,” added Kendall. “Children will have a chance to ride, brush, and feed carrots to the horses. The money raised at events like this one is used to buy food and other supplies for the animals.” As for one wish she would grant to Laughing Pony Rescue, Kendall replied, "To ensure that Laughing Pony has unlimited supplies and financial support to foster and care for the rescued horses. This would aid training and rehabilitation efforts and hopefully lead to quick adoptions so more room can be made for other neglected horses that require care.”

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Get Away to the Great Outdoors at San Diego's Beautiful Campgrounds by LAINEY KRAL
W
hether you’re complete camping novices or grizzled outdoor experts, San Diego campgrounds can be the perfect weekend destination. Pack up your car, trailer, or motor home and head out for a taste of the great outdoors. An hour east of San Diego, Lake Morena County Park is a blend of coastal, desert, and mountain terrain. Ten cabins and 86 hook-up, partial hook-up, and tent sites mean there’s a perfect campsite for any family. The Morena Reservoir is open to personal canoes and kayaks, and motorized boats are available to rent for fishing and cruising. The famous Pacific Crest Trail passes near a select number of campsites. Bonita’s Sweetwater Summit Regional Park welcomes motor homes, trailers, and tent campers alike to 112 campsites in the 500-acre park. The 15 miles of trails are open to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders – some of the campsites include corrals so equine visitors can stay the night as well. Kick back and spend the afternoon fishing at Sweetwater Reservoir, then get dinner ready at one of the picnic pavilions.
William Heise County Park offers 103 campsites, almost 11 miles of multi-use trails, and 14 cabins with internet access for those who want to stay connected in comfort. Look out for mule deer and wild turkeys among the pines and oaks. The park is 4,200 feet above sea level near the historic gold rush town of Julian – head into the city during the day to visit the Pioneer Museum or pick up one of the famous local pies. Be sure to make reservations early and stay updated on current campfire and water use regulations. Remember to check the projected weather at your destination before you finalize your packing list. Learn more or check out other campgrounds at www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks/camping.
The S'More the Merrier Standard s’mores are delicious, but sometimes it’s fun to go beyond the traditional marshmallow, chocolate bar, and graham cracker sandwich. Whether you're making them over the campfire or in your fireplace, try a few of these ideas to get some more out of your s’mores! • • • • • •
Add sliced bananas or strawberries Add peanut butter or caramel sauce Use Nutella instead of chocolate Experiment with different kinds of candy bars Use cookies instead of graham crackers Try chocolate marshmallows and chocolate graham crackers ¢

:::: REAL ESTATE WATCH
The Del Mar Racing Season is Off and Running – Are 92067 Home Prices Doing the Same?
N
ationwide reports indicate that luxury home prices are expected to continue to climb throughout 2015. JP Morgan points to six macro trends that are helping to drive up United States luxury home prices: 1. The U.S. economy is picking up speed. After several years of private sector healing we are now entering expansion of a new business cycle. 2. Higher equity prices benefit luxury housing sector. Luxury home prices have been on the upswing since 2012. 3. High-income households are more confident about the U.S. recovery. Wealthier households have more exposure to the stock market. As equity prices climb, home buyers feel more confident – further driving up competition for high-end properties. 4. Limited supply is pushing up prices. 5. Many overseas buyers add to sector strength. Overseas investors continue to see the U.S. housing market as a safe haven. 6. Even after an impressive rally, prices in the luxury market have not risen as dramatically as other market segments and there are still good deals to be had. Though interest rates may be ticking up, they remain near historic lows.
• • •
Pending sales are up 21% Active listings are down 3.9% Average time on market is down 24%
Looks like the luxury market is off to the races! But wait just a minute! If you look at year-to-date it shows that closed sales volume are up, but if you look at June 2015 compared to June 2014 it shows that only 15 homes sold this year versus 24 that sold in June 2014. That puts year-over-year closed volume down 37%. What we have to watch for now is whether this indicates a slowing trend. Stay tuned to see what happens as we round the next bend in the track!
