Creating Lasting Memories

P U B L I S HE R

Derrick Breaux

M

y wife and I have been blessed with extended families that are very involved in our lives. Being a transplant from Texas (where most of my family still lives), I can appreciate that my wife is a rare third generation San Diegan. She is lucky to have most of her family close by. While we try to spend as much time as possible with both sides of the family, sometimes it gets a little difficult to get everyone together at the same time due to busy schedules and locations. Spending time with the family creates lasting memories. Six years ago, shortly after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather decided to start a tradition of an annual family reunion trip. So each summer, my wife and I take our kids to a lake house outside of Austin, TX for the annual Breaux Family Reunion. For a week, we get to visit and catch up with multiple generations of Breauxs. Our kids hang with their cousins, and the older generation can reminisce about the good ol’ days. It’s been an awesome family tradition that my late grandfather started and left to the family for years to come. My aunt, uncles, and dad are carrying on the annual tradition. And continuing with the creating memories theme, this year my wife’s family surprised everyone with a family trip (thank you T & D). We were able to spend a week with my wife’s parents and her brother and sister’s families. As we cruised through the blue Caribbean waters and various ports of call, we all had a blast visiting and spending time together. The entire experience – the six months leading up to the vacation and the vacation itself – was amazing. Our kids and their cousins ruled the ship (or at least they thought), and all of us adults acted like kids again – even my wife’s parents! There was no shortage of laughs and memorable moments, nor is there a shortage of great photos. I guarantee that we will all be talking about this for years to come. Since these vacations have had such a positive impact on us, I wanted to take a moment to make sure that our families know how much we appreciate spending time with them (yes, some of them actually read this magazine!). Thank you to my late grandparents. Thank you to my dad. Thank you to my aunts and uncles for continuing the traditions, and thank you to my in-laws for putting together a fantastic trip. We love you guys! And thank YOU for being a reader of 92067 Magazine. Please don’t be a stranger. WESLEY ZHANG HEADS TO SOUTH KOREA TO COMPETE IN INTERNATIONAL LINGUISTICS OLYMPIAD

Name: School: Grade: Parents: Sibling:

Wesley Zhang (16) Canyon Crest Academy 12 Lily and Lian Zhang Wendy Zhang (24)

T

o say that Canyon Crest Academy senior Wesley Zhang is an academic standout is an understatement. He recently earned a spot on Team USA to compete in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) in South Korea. The IOL is a competition in which teams of young linguists from around the world gather to compete in solving linguistic puzzles using logic skills. “In order to qualify for Team USA in the IOL, students first participate in the North America Computational Linguistics Olympiad. There are two rounds in this competition, the first being the Open Round. Those that score high enough in the Open Round then compete in the Invitational Round. The top eight scorers in the Invitational Round comprise the two teams that the USA sends to the IOL,” explained Wesley, who also competed in the IOL two years ago when the event was held in Dublin, Ireland. While Wesley is looking forward to the IOL competition itself, he is also eager to meet the other participants, as well as visit sites close to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. “This plays to my interest in history,” he said. According to him, it may surprise people how interested he is in history since most of his other interests revolve around science and mathematics. However, Wesley is dedicated to learning as much as possible about the subject of history. In addition to competing in the IOL, Wesley is involved in other competitive math and science teams, such as USA Mathematics Olympiad, USA Biology Olympiad, USA Physics Olympiad, and USA Computing Olympiad. He also participates in trivia competitions, including the San Diego County Academic League, Quiz Bowl, National History Bee and Bowl, and the International Geography Bee. When he is not participating in academic competitions, Wesley enjoys solving logic puzzles, listening to classical music, programming, tutoring other students, and volunteering at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. In the future, Wesley hopes to pursue an interdisciplinary career that involves all of his interests. “Cognitive science, for one, is a field I’ve taken an interest in,” he shared, “due to its involvement with linguistics, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.” 

STUDIO WEST

E

mbarking on a new career can be a daunting task, especially when it involves diving into a high-energy, high-profile one such as audio engineering. But switching up careers later in life is something that seemed like a “no-brainer” to several audio enthusiasts after taking part in the Electronic Production Package (EPP) at Studio West. Like their fellow classmates, these students initially enrolled in the EPP program as a fun way to expand their skills in what seemed like an after-work hobby. However, once involved in the program, what started as a hobby soon began looking more like a viable career option. “Oftentimes we see some of the more casual enthusiasts enter the program with the idea that this is for fun or good for a side business. But once they start working with our instructors, getting hands-on engineering experience in a working recording studio, we see a shift in focus. Folks with a regular 9-to5 job they aren’t 100% invested in realize that their passion can be turned into a viable

career,” explained Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admissions for The Recording Arts Center (TRAC) at Studio West. Todd explained further, “When the class is over, the next logical step to launch a career in the industry is to acquire more experience and get the in-depth training that can lead to a successful career in audio engineering. Many find this in our year-long Diploma program.” One student, Isaiah, finished the EPP program last month and immediately enrolled in the Diploma Program. His classes began on Monday, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about his choice. “It was so much fun working a real recording studio. I’m really excited about my decision to start the full program!” Don’t miss out on a new career opportunity in audio engineering – try out The Recording Art Center’s Electronic Production Package now. Classes are enrolling now, so check out the full schedule at www.studiowest.com or call 858-592-9497.

pproximately 370 guests attended Serving Seniors’ 6th Annual Experience of a Lifetime Gala at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe. The “Stories for the Ages”-themed event featured a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, and a popular wine grab, raising $435,000 to support the organization’s programs and services. “The San Diego community once again came together to not only raise critical funds, but also to shine a bright light on vulnerable seniors and the daily struggles they face,” said Serving Seniors President and CEO Paul Downey. “We are honored to continue to do the good work of this organization by touching more lives and providing more nutritious meals to the thousands of San Diego seniors in need.” Serving Seniors is a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives through comprehensive

COMMUNITY STUFF

Nonprofit of the Year The 77th Assembly District’s 2019 Nonprofit of the Year is the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The organization serves an average of 350,000 people per month, distributing food directly to San Diegans in need at more than 200 sites every month as well as providing food for more than 500 other nonprofit feeding programs, such as soup kitchens and churches. “The San Diego Food Bank has served an important role in our community through the years,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who presented the award. “I truly appreciate their work providing food and other resources to those who are in need in the San Diego region.” Around 24,000 people volunteer at the nonprofit warehouse every year and provided 28 million pounds of food in 2018. “It takes a community to feed a community, and this award honors the wonderful people who make our mission possible,” said James A. Floros, San Diego Food Bank President and CEO. Learn more at www.sandiegofoodbank.org.

SDBG’s 20th Annual Gala in the Garden San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) will host its 20th Annual Gala in the Garden: Cultivating Community on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5 to 10 p.m. Guests can stroll through lush garden areas while enjoying signature cocktails, gourmet cuisine from local restaurants and caterers, live entertainment, interactive education stations, and jaw-dropping decor. The event also offers guests a special sneak peek at the Garden’s new exhibit space, the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory, named after this year’s Paul Ecke Jr. Award honorees Martin and Carol Dickinson. The conservatory – opening to the public soon – will help the Garden advance education, conservation, and community engagement for local San Diegans and visitors alike. Gala in the Garden is SDBG’s largest annual event and fundraiser, with all proceeds benefiting the Garden. Small Business of the Year Second Chance Beer Company, an independent brewery founded in Carmel Mountain Ranch, was recently named the 77th Assembly District 2019 Small Business of the Year. The business stands out for its commitment to environmental sustainability. Through its charity program, Giving Second Chances, the company donates one percent of all annual sales to organizations that serve people, animals, and the planet. More than 70% of the company’s furnishings are upcycled, recycled, and repurposed as well. “Second Chance Beer Company has served as a worthy example for many businesses to follow,” said Assemblymember Brian Maienschein. “Despite being a relatively new brewery, the company has contributed tremendously to both the economic strength and environmental sustainability of our community.” The brewery was founded by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes, and Virginia Morrison. In addition to the original Carmel Mountain Ranch brewery and taproom, they now have a tasting room in North Park.

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 31st Annual Spring Fling Gala, Our Extravagant World Tour, took place at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in June. Guests enjoyed food from 20 local restaurants, entertainment by Haute Chile Productions, and exciting silent and live auctions. The event, co-chaired by Jamie Carr and Erin Combs, raised over $445,000 to support the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center, including: saving more orphan pets through the Adoptions Transfer Program; serving more homeless San Diegans through Pets Without Walls; and continuing to provide unique opportunities to support the bond between humans and animals through the Humane Education Program. Helen Woodward Animal Center also recently celebrated the opening of its brand new pet Adoptions Building, which will help the center better serve the approximately 3,500 animals that come through its doors each year. For more information go to www.animalcenter.org.

RSF Garden Club Awards Grants The Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club recently awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to 13 local nonprofit organizations to help fund initiatives that further the mission of the organization. From great weather to award-winning schools, North County San Diego is our home sweet home. What really makes a community special, though, is neighbors taking care of each other. Our local communities are teeming with medical professionals – from dentists and orthodontists to general physicians

op-notch medical care is key to keeping our families healthy and happy – and that goes for our four-legged family members too. That’s why San Diego native Dr. Laura Greenlee Johnson grew up dreaming of becoming a small animal veterinarian. She’s worked with both human and animal patients over the course of her education and career. After graduating from University of California San Diego’s Muir College, Laura worked for several years as part of a team conducting cardiovascular health research in children through early school intervention programs, while also completing a master’s degree in exercise physiology. At 28 years of age, Laura decided it was time to follow her childhood dreams and ventured off to the Caribbean to the island of St. Kitts in order to attend Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She thrived there and even earned the seventh-semester achievement award for her class, which is given to the top student at the end of their final semester of the pre-clinical portion of studies in St. Kitts before heading off to the full clinical year at another U.S. veterinary school. Laura attended Washington State University for her senior clinical year of veterinary school and embraced the change of living in and exploring Washington, Oregon, and Idaho during this fast-paced and intensive portion of her veterinary education. Dr. Greenlee, as she was known by for the next 14 years while working at All Creatures Hospital, Inc. in Del Mar as an associate veterinarian, married her husband Brian Johnson, a longtime Fairbanks Ranch resident, in 2010 in Rancho Santa Fe. They started a family, which now consists of three boys: Nate (8) and Luke and Blake (4-year-old twins).

and specialists – who live where they work and are dedicated to helping their neighbors stay healthy and happy. With cutting-edge technology, a wealth of experience, and human compassion, they spend each day making a difference. Outside of their offices, they might be cheering next to you on the bleachers, volunteering in the same classroom, or eating at the same restaurant on a Friday night. ZCode’s 2019 Medical and Health Professionals Issue is proud to introduce you to some of these local superstars.

“We can’t wait to show you and your furry family members around our Fear Freeinspired, sPAWlike, gorgeous veterinary clinic.”

In 2018, Laura decided it was time to follow her next dream and embarked on the journey to establish her own veterinary clinic. After 16 years of practicing, Laura had established a vision of what she felt an ideal veterinary clinic would be like. She’s worked hard to bring that vision to life at Santaluz Animal Care (SAC). SAC provides general practice veterinary medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery (including spays, neuters, mass removals, and other basic procedures), and orthopedic and specialty surgeries can be scheduled at SAC with a mobile boardcertified surgeon. The practice specializes in the care of dogs, cats, and some exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and reptiles. SAC treats sick pets and handles veterinary emergencies, as well as focusing on preventative medicine and wellness visits. The office offers a variety of prescription dietary options and medicines onsite and through their competitively-priced online pharmacy. In addition to these traditional services, SAC also offers complementary therapies (alternative medicine), including acupuncture, Chinese veterinary

medicine, cold laser therapy, and regenerative medicine. Dr. Johnson and her highly trained staff also use diagnostic tools that are progressive and unique, such as digital thermal imaging, stance analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and digital radiography, as well as digital dental radiography. “The breadth of our offerings, as well as the Fear Free approach to our patients and true quality customer service, is what sets us apart and goes above and beyond the standard veterinary practice experience,” explained Dr. Johnson. Laura’s team members flocked to join her clinic’s staff upon reading about the clinic’s vision in the job descriptions. They are now a cohesive unit, and the clinic’s dream is now their dream job too. “We can’t wait to show you and your furry family members around our Fear Free-inspired, sPAWlike, gorgeous veterinary clinic,” shared Laura. “Oh – and I almost forgot – we also offer full-service pet grooming on site!”  August | September 2019 • 92067MAGAZINE.COM • 17

Pediatrics, Primary Care, and Express Care in Encinitas

U

C San Diego Health’s brand-new medical clinic is a one-stop shop for residents of Encinitas and surrounding communities. The new location, which opened in June, offers world-class care to patients of all ages in one convenient location. Infants, children, and teenagers receive compassionate care from pediatricians through all their developmental stages in a supportive, family-friendly environment. “A new patient to my practice can expect to collaborate with me on the health of their child,” said pediatrician Dr. Robert Coles. “I want parents to be involved, to ask questions, and for us to walk through the process together.” Services offered include prenatal consultations, newborn care, well-baby and well-child visits, and coordination with pediatric specialists if needed. Family medicine at UC San Diego Health offers providers who can care for the entire family, including children, adults,

and seniors. With a model of care that is based on building personal relationships and putting patients first, physicians emphasize communication, shared decision-making, and accessibility. “Family doctors take care of the whole patient, not just the medical and clinical aspect of their lives,” said primary care physician and Encinitas medical director Dr. Yewah Jung. “I like to ask my patients how their day was and how their family is, because those are often very important factors in a patient’s health.” Choosing UC San Diego Health for primary care also means that patients have access to an entire network of advanced specialty care, including the state-of-the-art Jacobs Medical Center hospital in La Jolla and various specialty services in nearby offices. For common health care needs such as coughs or ear infections, as well as wellness visits for certain kinds of

prescriptions or school health screenings, patients have a same-day access option with Express Care, available in Encinitas 12 hours a day, seven days a week. And with the Save My Spot feature, patients can check wait times online and save their spot in line so they spend less time at the clinic. UC San Diego Health is an integral part of the local community as a member of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and the North San Diego Business Chamber. All physicians and nurse practitioners are board certified and focused on the importance of accessible, personalized care. “I believe the patient and the doctor are part of a team,” said Dr. Jung. “My job is primarily to listen and figure out the tools to empower my patients to make healthy changes in their lives.” 

A Healthy Family Starts With a Doctor You Can Trust

M

anaging your family’s health care is not usually top of mind until a loved one is sick or you’ve had a life change. Choosing the right care can be overwhelming and confusing, but selecting a primary care doctor ahead of time helps ensure the best care for your family when the need arises. A primary care doctor coordinates your family’s routine and specialty care. Finding the right doctor will depend on your unique needs. If you haven’t given much thought to this important decision, here’s a good place to start: Decide which type of primary care doctor you want. There are four types of primary care doctors: • Pediatricians care for children and adolescents. • Family medicine doctors treat the whole family, from infants to older adults. • Internal medicine doctors treat adults age 18 and up. • Internal medicine/pediatric doctors are board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, and treat people of all ages.

Think about your personal preferences. • Are you more comfortable with a male or female doctor? • Do you want your doctor’s office close to your home or work? • Do you need a doctor who speaks a language other than English? • Which hospitals does the doctor admit to?

Consider convenience. Many North County families that have busy schedules look for a doctor who offers a wide variety of ways to access care. These can include: • Video and phone appointments. • The convenience of a medical center where many services, such as pharmacy, lab, radiology, and urgent care, are all under one roof. • Same-day appointments. • After-hours pediatric care for when the kids are sick. • The ability to securely manage your and your family’s health care online by messaging your doctor’s office, making appointments, viewing lab results, and more. Confirm your insurance coverage. When you find the ideal doctor, you’ll need to verify if they are in your health plan network. Call the number listed on your insurance card to confirm, and let your insurance carrier know you’ve selected that person as your new primary care doctor. Sharp Rees-Stealy can help you navigate your options and make it easy to find a doctor. Plus, they accept almost all health insurance plans. Select your doctor at sharp.com/srsdoctor or by calling 858-264-2539. 

SADDLE UP IN SAN DIEGO Take to the Trails and Make New Equine Friends This Summer by LAINEY KRAL

T

here’s nothing quite like leaning back in the saddle or petting a velvety nose while the blue summer sky stretches above you. San Diego is home to a vibrant, varied equine community. Whether you’re the parent of an enthusiastic future cowgirl, a grown-up barn kid who hasn’t ridden in years, or just plain curious, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and experience something new. Besides lessons and summer camps, guided trail rides are a great opportunity for new riders or those just getting back in the saddle. Options include giddying up through the hills of Poway, riding through the surf on a beach ride, and wine tasting adventures in Temecula. Many facilities offer both public and private rides – especially for larger groups, it’s smart to call ahead to confirm availability. Be sure to check the weather policy too, in case of cancellations. If getting in the saddle isn’t your style, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the world of horses from the ground. The Del Mar Racetrack may be San Diego’s most famous equine destination, but don’t miss the hunter, jumper, and equitation events at nearby Showpark of San Diego. The 2019 Poway Rodeo is also coming up on Sept. 27 and 28, showcasing Western disciplines like barrel racing and roping. San Diego even has a thriving polo scene – check out organizations like Lakeside Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, or San Diego Polo Club for beginner lessons or upcoming events to watch. You can also combine a love of horses with a love of making a difference. The San Diego area has a number of therapeutic riding centers and equine rescues that are often open to volunteers and support. Whatever your interests and wherever you go, whether you’re sitting astride a thoroughbred or a pony, remember to pause for a bit and just enjoy the moment. Have a good ride! 

STABLE SAFETY • Wear closed-toe shoes, and strap on your helmet before getting in the saddle. • When meeting an unfamiliar horse, always ask its owner whether it’s okay to pet it, feed treats, or take photos. • Walk, don’t run! Sudden movements and loud noises can make horses nervous. • Pay attention to facility rules and listen to your instructor – every barn and every horse is unique!

Local Star’s Great Escape JACKIE FOSTER SHARES HER VOICE IN DEBUT SINGLE

S

an Diego local and worldwide singing sensation Jackie Foster is launching the next step of her musical journey with the release of her first single and her first festival appearance. Last year, the Poway High School graduate appeared on season 14 of The Voice, reaching the semifinals under the guidance of her coach, Alicia Keys. The show was a whirlwind learning experience, and now Jackie is ready to make her individual mark on the music industry. Her single, “Great Escape,” debuted on July 26. Jackie was inspired to open up about the artistic struggles she faced after her time on The Voice ended. “I felt empty, like I lost my purpose,” she shared. “I lost the show which was like a family to me and I lost my

band all at once. But then I stopped and I realized, I’ve experienced success, I got national recognition, and I’m not going to let anything stop me from getting it again. Everything falling apart was my ‘great escape’ to finding my purpose.” She’s proud of what she’s accomplished with this song. “I sat in my room and started humming the guitar line. I couldn’t stop singing it for weeks!” she said. “My goal was to write a memorable song that was easy to sing along to but also empower listeners to face their fears and put all doubts aside.” Jackie is also looking forward to her debut festival appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago this August. Find her there or on her social media channels under the handle @itsjackiefoster. 
