omewhere along the way, I got the reputation in my family as being somewhat of a bah humbug during the holidays. My wife and children are quick to point out my lack of interest in holiday decorating and gift wrapping. But the reality is that I absolutely love the holidays – especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. And even though I may act like hunting for that perfect tree does not interest me, it’s just an act (but I think my family may be on to me since I really love everything about it). So, I’ll have to continue complaining a little in order to keep up the façade. The fact is that I love the tradition that the holidays bring. I love the buildup, the preparation, and the anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Life can bring a lot of changes, but one thing that has been important to my wife and me is continuing the family tradition. And having everyone together warms our hearts. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or any of the other holidays that we celebrate, everyone in the family knows where we are going to be and who will be there. They look forward to it, and they expect it. As crazy as it sounds, we know what food will be served and who will prepare each dish (for each holiday). It works this Derrick Breaux way. It’s our family tradition. And although Southern Publisher California winter holidays may entail swimsuits and sunscreen instead of bulky coats, I wouldn’t change a thing – nor would they. So, if you hear me whining about decorating the Christmas tree or hanging lights around the house, just know that it’s all part of an act (sort of my own unconventional tradition). But let’s be sure to keep this as our little secret. I don’t want my wife and kids to know that I’m really a softy when it comes to the holidays. If they knew the truth, I’d have to do a lot more decorating and wear one of those silly holiday hats (sorry, that’s not gonna happen!).
Happy holidays to all, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

RSF SIBLINGS NICK AND EMMIE NIELSEN HAVE A WIDE ARRAY OF INTERESTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS by KELLEY GUSICH | photo by Soul of Photography

ifelong RSF residents 18-year-old Nick Nielsen and his 16-yearold sister Emmie love the quaint, small, and sunny community they’ve grown up in. At their school, Pacific Ridge in Carlsbad, Nick and Emmie shared their love of the way the teachers and students work together both in and out of the classroom. A mutual respect is ingrained – “The Harkness table discussions that we have make it much easier for every student to have a voice,” Emmie said, “and allow everybody to get an equal chance to voice their opinions.” Her favorite subjects there are science and psychology, and she’s a varsity starter for the basketball and lacrosse girl’s teams. Nick plays basketball and is fascinated by history, from modern world to post-colonial African. He credits his teacher, Mr. Webber, for stoking this interest. “He made learning history entertaining throughout my sophomore and junior years here at Pacific Ridge.” Although a younger Nick thought professional baseball might be his goal, once he started high school, basketball emerged as his main passion. He’s now been given the Coaches Award and Second Team All-League, also receiving a High Academic Athlete Award last year while playing for the competitive team West Coast Elite. He volunteers his time to Bird’s Nest, New Haven Night Shelter, and La Posada – service groups assisting the homeless from Carlsbad to Cape Town, South Africa. Nick wants to study sports business. Emmie’s big adventure started at Coachella last year, when she was scouted by IMG Models. Signing with the agency worldwide, she is represented in each IMG office – New York, London, Paris, and Milan. This past September, Emmie got to walk in fashion shows for five different designers, Name: School: Grade: Parents: Favorite Local Spot:

working 12 to 14 hours per day for 21 consecutive days. “It was the most challenging, yet rewarding, experience of my entire life!” Emmie exclaimed. She volunteers for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and her future goal is to live in NYC and model full-time. Both siblings rave about mom as their biggest inspiration. They highlight how she helps them push themselves and try their absolute hardest in every endeavor, whether it be academics, sports, modeling, or volunteerism. “She constantly inspires me to challenge myself, be a better communicator, a better student, and a better person,” Nick affirmed. Emmie reiterated all those sentiments, then concluded with, “And most of all, her hilarious sense of humor keeps me laughing and happy every single day.”

n 2010, Jenna Saylor began offering dance classes at a local community center. The lifelong dancer and former preschool teacher soon had a following of students that outgrew the space, so she opened her own studio in 2012: Inspired Movement Dance and Performing Arts. Today, Jenna’s new studio location in Rancho Santa Fe is equipped to serve students with even more dance offerings. Inspired Movement Dance sets itself apart from other studios through its focus on high-quality training in a healthy environment. Classes are offered to those seeking to be professional as well as recreational dancers. “It’s competitive, but not about winning,” Jenna stated. “It’s about unlocking each dancer’s potential and staying focused on the journey and the process.” From the very beginning, Jenna has been instilling confidence in all her students and helping to develop their talents and unveil their full potential. A number of dance genres are taught at the studio, including ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, acro, and musical theater. The Academy Program starts for young dancers at the age of two all the way through teens. The Inspired Movement Ballet Conservatory trains students in the highest standards of classical ballet. “The program is aimed at preparing the dancer for a professional ballet career focusing on the student’s individual goals,” Jenna said. The Inspired Movement Company Conservatory is designed to inspire students through a more diverse program. Jenna explained, “This program will equip students with the technical training and performance experience that optimally prepares dancers for future professional careers in dance, or acceptance in college bound programs.” The dance students perform at local nursing homes during the holidays as well as community events. The Nutcracker Ballet in December and end-of-year recitals are highlights to look forward to. With her focus on both a positive environment and excellence, Jenna shared, “Our students are pushed and challenged in class in a nurturing and fun atmosphere. The Vision of Children (VOC) Foundation, founded by Fairbanks Ranch residents Sam and Vivian Hardage, recently hosted its 10th World Symposium, bringing together scientists, doctors, and families from throughout the U.S., England, Germany, and Spain to present and discuss the latest vision research findings. The foundation has cultivated a reliable network of researchers from various institutions to invite each year, establishing an environment of trust and a spirit of problem solving in the hopes of finding a cure. Families directly impacted by genetic vision disorders were also given the unique opportunity to listen and learn from some of the most advanced minds in vision research, providing them with comfort, hope, and answers. The program also included dinner, entertainment by VOC’s own Vision Hero Joel Gomez, and presentation of the Vision of Children Leadership Award to Phil and Barbara Huffman. athedral Catholic High School’s (CCHS) core values of faith, knowledge, character, and responsibility have guided the development of highachieving, well-rounded leaders for over 60 years. The CCHS legacy has deep roots, though the name is only 13 years old. Cathedral Girls High School merged with University San Diego High School (UNI) in 1970 on UNI’s Linda Vista Campus. UNI transitioned to the current CCHS Campus in Carmel Valley in 2005 and took on the new name of Cathedral Catholic High School. “No matter what campus you were on, once you become a Don, you’re always a Don,” said CCHS President Mr. Stevan Laaperi. “The Dons’ legacy has never been stronger. Over 50 alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.” The professional staff is well qualified to uphold that legacy. Most teachers have a master’s degree or higher in the subject they teach, and the entire staff strives to model the values of a Catholic faith community. Therapeutic Learning Center (formerly Therapeutic Literacy Center) provides individually specialized cognitive therapy and educational services for remediation of learning disabilities and learning challenges. Individual services are designed to erase not just all kinds of learning problems but all kinds of learning disabilities too so that students can move forward in any learning environment in their future independently confident without need for accommodations.
P
arents with children that are struggling in school may want to consider the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) as a short-term investment. Since its inception in 2012, TLC has a mission to FIX learning challenges and disabilities so that students can thrive in any classroom environment with confidence and joy in learning. The program was originally called Therapeutic Literacy Center, but has recently changed its name to better represent the breadth and scope of learning skills TLC focuses on. Located in Solana Beach, TLC’s clinicians provide cognitive therapies for children and adults along with a private school option with academic classes for students in 1st through 12th grades. “We provide individual educational services with specialized cognitive therapy meant to FIX or erase of all kinds of learning difficulties and identified disabilities. After a relatively short period of time at TLC, students transition back to their traditional schools as successful and independent learners,” said school principal Maria Bagby. Individual services are designed to FIX their learning problems, so that students can independently move forward on an even playing field without the need for accommodations and extra support. “These kids are smart, but struggling. They don’t need us to ‘teach to their strengths’ as we’ve all been told. They need us to strengthen their weaknesses so that learning comes easily in any environment,” Maria explained. Maria herself is a reading specialist and works closely with a network of professionals including educational psychologists, audiologists, MFTs,

The team is dedicated to identifying and fixing the CAUSE of problems rather than focusing on symptoms that come along with frustration and difficulties in attention, motivation, and organization. Some of these symptoms come with labels such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Nonspecific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, and more. Others have no label at all. TLC is ideal for kids who are struggling in a typical school environment. The school focuses
on the science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change both its physical structure and its functional organization in response to training and experience. For many students, TLC clinicians combine proven cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program. The unique hybrid method of combining cognitive therapies with the Arrowsmith Program accelerates changes in learning success. “We don’t expect our students to stay with us more than one to two years before they are ready to reintegrate into mainstream classes with new levels of success, academically and socially. This is a short-term investment in the life of a child with permanent changes in learning skills.” In addition to their private school option, TLC offers services before, during, and after school for families that choose therapy while remaining in their current school of choice. With their new name in the new year, TLC has redesigned its financial structure with a reduced cost to families. “We have no contracts, lower hourly services, and increased student services,” Maria related. “We are listening to the parents – we are making it easier for them to give their children what they need.”

f you have a middle or high school-aged child who wants to go beyond the regimented educational system and is seeking greater connection with teachers, with peers, and with the whole learning experience, do not despair. The Grauer School in Encinitas, which happens to be the longest-serving independent school in San Diego’s North County, is a solution. Its stated philosophy reads as such: “More than just a curriculum, real teaching is the deepening relationship between teacher and student.” Established in 1991, Grauer claims to be the worldwide leader in the “small schools movement.” The school’s founder, Dr. Stuart Grauer, noted, “We have traveled far and wide studying the world’s most inspirational schools, educators, and educational movements: Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Socratic, free and democratic schooling, expeditionary learning and classical education, from oneroom schoolhouses to Peking University. We support all these great movements and traditions which have provided us with heroes, mentors, and wisdom.” Grauer Principal Dana Abplanalp-Diggs added, “The Grauer School uses the foundations of these great
traditions to infuse all that we keep learning and synthesizing. With the freedom to make choices in their education, our students are discovering their passions and becoming courageous, curious leaders.
“AT GRAUER, NO STUDENT GOES UNNOTICED – ALL ARE PROUD OF THEMSELVES, ALL ARE ENCOURAGED AND REWARDED IN FINDING THEIR VOICE AND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD. THEY’RE ADVENTURESOME. THEY’RE HAPPY!” ~ Julie D., 11th Grade Parent
And even though our focus is not on rankings and test scores, our students are getting accepted to and are succeeding at their top choice colleges.”
Engaging students in six core values – resourcefulness, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, compassion, selfadvocacy, and accountability – The Grauer School aims to develop well-rounded students who are purposeful, confident global citizens. The learning curriculum involves field trips, guest speakers, community service activities, and studentcreated programs, all of which serve to complement the required subject matters and stimulate young minds. Grauer is also the region’s only UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) affiliate school, with 176 partner schools around the world, all while gaining unbeatable college placement: 96% of top three college picks and averaging $50-60,000 in merit scholarship offers for graduating seniors. Emphasizing the concept of students taking ownership over their learning, Dana exclaimed, “In a world that often seems to put ‘standards’ before personal development, and to put institutional needs above human needs, Grauer keeps the focus on the individual student. Our students achieve and are valued because they are developing personal passions, and teens coming of age are finding their unique voices at Grauer.”

VILLAGE CHURCH PRESCHOOL
A
lifelong journey of learning and inspiration begins at The Village Church Preschool (VCP). Children ages two to five can play, learn, and grow through the school’s focus on developing the whole child. “That includes each stage of development – social, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, and gross motor, which provides for kindergarten readiness,” explained VCP Director Pamela Miller. “Our philosophy is Developmentally Appropriate Practice, which means we provide experiences and activities that are appropriate for each stage of development.” Teachers get to know each child as an individual, developing unique curriculum to engage and inspire each child’s interests. STEAM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – feature prominently in the curriculum. VCP’s rich history speaks to a legacy of support and achievement. The school was founded in 1962 by young moms at the Village Church seeking the perfect place for their children to learn and play – today, some of the earliest students are now sending their own students to VCP. The highly educated teaching staff is part of that legacy as well. “VCP is such an amazing place to teach that teachers stay for many years!” Director Miller shared. “The average length of employment for our teachers is 20-plus years; we have very low turnover.” VCP knows it takes a village to raise a child, and teachers build meaningful relationships with the entire family. Supportive, respectful relationships between children and their peers, teachers, and families are vital for healthy development. “We view parents as participants in their child’s educational life and welcome you into our classroom as an intricate part of our community of learners,” Director Miller said. ancho Santa Fe resident Dee Leone is a successful writer. In addition to penning three popular children’s books, Dee has also written educational books, poems, plays, stories, activity sheets for Highlights magazine, and numerous online articles. She recently did a reading of her second children’s book, Dough Nights and Dragons, at this year’s San Diego Festival of Books, held at Liberty Station in August. “I was thrilled to read that book at the festival, which was inspired by my wondering how doughnuts were created,” Dee commented. She added, “The most rewarding part of being an author is to get stories into the hands of young readers or listeners and to watch them smile, laugh, and get turned on by books. My goal is to write stories that will ignite an appetite for reading and set a child’s imagination on fire.” Armed with a B.S. in Education, Dee has taught elementary classes in Ohio, California, and Texas, and was even a teacher’s aide for a gifted program in Alaska. Mixing her vast experience teaching youngsters with her innate curiosity with the world around her, Dee is never at a loss for book subject ideas. Her first children’s book, Bizz and Buzz Make Honey Buns, came about because Dee is a fan of homophone wordplay. She explained, “This book is

She elaborated, “I enjoy taking photos of nature – from close-ups of flowers to wide panoramic vistas – and have had the good fortune to visit incredible places. So, when I was looking at images of swans on a glistening lake in Slovenia, or leaping dolphins off the coast of New Zealand, I was inspired to write a lullaby about them.” Forever influenced by beautiful scenery, Dee is especially grateful to call Rancho Santa Fe home. She exclaimed, “I like the quiet, natural surroundings, the hummingbirds and butterflies that flit about all over our yard, the weather, the charming village area, and the golf courses in the vicinity.” When she isn’t writing, Dee loves scrapbooking, reading, and learning to play golf.

SCIENCE DENTAL IMPLANT DENTISTRY
THE
OF
by TARKAN SIDAL, DDS, MD
A
dental implant is an artificial titanium fixture that is placed surgically into the jaw bone to substitute for a missing tooth and its roots.
There are different types of dental implants ranging from blade to cylinder to screw type, with the screw type being the most commonly accepted design nowadays. Titanium is the ninth most abundant metal on Earth. It has a light weight, is resistant to corrosion, and is biocompatible with living tissue. Swedish surgeon Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark discovered that when titanium makes contact with living bone tissue, they grow together to form a permanent adhesion. He named this process osseointegration.Osseointegration – defined as direct structural and functional connection between ordered, living bone and the surface of a load carrying implant – belongs to the category of primary bone healing. Right after implant placement, the
inflammatory bone healing phase takes place. This is followed by the proliferative phase where initial bone, known as woven bone, is formed four to six weeks after the implant placement surgery. This bone is low in density but forms rapidly. The third phase is the maturation phase, where osteoid type bone deposited. Loading the implant (using the implant) stimulates transformation from woven bone to lamellar bone. This bone is the weight-bearing bone that is formed; lastly, the resorption and remodeling phase occurs throughout the lifetime of the implant. The implant complex is composed of multitudes of structures: bone tissue, implant, abutment, abutment screw, prosthetic superstructure, retention screw, esthetic facing, chewing surface. Bone tissue, placement of implant, and generally the healing abutment is dealt with by a surgeon or the implant placing practitioner; the rest of the structures are dealt with by the restoring dentist. Your surgeon and restoring dentist work together to provide the best coordinated care.
Most people are candidates for dental implants except for a small group of patients who are compromised medically and/or dentally, demonstrating delayed healing such as immunosuppression, antimetabolic treatment, or uncontrolled diabetes. It takes time for dental implant dentistry to take place due to the rules of the physiology of osseointegration. Conventionally, after a tooth is extracted, with or without bone grafting, it takes about three to four months until the site is ready for the actual implant placement. This time period might slightly vary depending on the quality of the patient’s existing bone quality. Following the dental implant placement, roughly another four months is needed for osseointegration of the titanium to the native bone due to laws of bone physiology. Then the patient’s restoring dentist works on the actual delivery of the crown, which is the only visible portion of this complex. There are also other variations of treatment in regards to dental implant placement and bone grafting, these are discussed on a case by case basis with a patient’s restoring dentist and surgeon working together to reach a customized outcome at the patient’s best interest.
