Community Pride & Give Back
It’s
Derrick Breaux Publisher
hard to flip through the pages of your 92078 Magazine and not feel a certain sense of community pride. In fact, dating back to the very first zip-code-based community magazine that we published in 2009, it’s been no secret that community is an important element in all of our lives. We’ve consistently used the pages of the magazines to promote and highlight all of the good things happening in our hometown. But what if there was a way that we all could show our community pride and actually give back to the community at the same time? How can this be done? Thank you for asking! I would like to introduce www.WearYourZip.com. By jumping online and ordering your custom Zip Code shirt today, you will be donating $5 (in your name) to the local school, charity, or nonprofit organization of your choice. And if that’s not good enough, we also offer free shipping! Really cool local shirts. Giving back to the community. Free shipping. What’s not to love about that? So spread the word to all of your friends and local connections, and let’s give some money back to our local communities – together (and get an awesome shirt in the process).
Order your local Zip Code shirt today at www.WearYourZip.com

or as long as he can remember, 16-year-old Matthew Gerber has always been passionate about his two favorite hobbies: photography and camping. “I have always felt that I was meant to take part in photography,” shared Matthew, whose interest in the art form was influenced by his grandfather – a photographer for the U.S. Navy. “I grew up seeing him always behind a camera,” recalled Matthew. “I always wanted to be a photographer like him.”

Matthew’s enthusiasm for camping began while he was a Cub Scout in second grade. “Camping understandably came from my membership in the Boy Scouts,” he noted. “I feel a brilliant connection to the outdoors and the natural world around me.” Today, Matthew continues his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America as a member of Troop 709 in Vista. “I actually don’t know what first drew me to the organization, but today, I could tell you a million reasons why scouting is appealing,” said Matthew. One reason, he explained, is watching his younger peers take part in the many activities offered by the Boy Scouts. “That could be when we shoot off model rockets in the desert, finish a 25-mile canoe trip on the Colorado River, climb up 20-foot waterfalls, attend weeklong summer camps, or even do community service projects,” he stated. “I love knowing that I helped the younger scouts make memories that will last a lifetime.” Matthew currently attends Mission Hills High School as a junior. “I admire my school’s close connection between the student body and teachers,” he shared. “There are many opportunities available to students, the campus is a great environment to learn, and they have astounding teachers and unique classes.” His favorite classes are history and criminal justice. “I have always been interested in history,” said Matthew. “Criminal justice, on the other hand, is a newfound interest.” Inspired by his teachers, as well as his older brother, Matthew has been honored with many awards pertaining to leadership and camping during his time in the Scouts. “Scouting is the biggest part of my life,” shared Matthew. “It has taught me more things than I ever thought I would know. It has formed me into the person I am today.”

he Twin Oaks Valley Equestrian Association (TOVEA) hosted the Common Ground Clinic and Horse Sense 101 Sessions in mid-May to celebrate the newly proclaimed Day of the Horse at Walnut Grove Horse Park. This family-friendly event drew many participants to the Cowboy Challenge, Dressage, and Showmanship/Western Horsemanship/English Equitation clinics with instruction from top local professional trainers. Spectators experienced the wonderful world of horses through the eight Horse Sense sessions, which included demonstrations on grooming, feeding and nutrition, hoof care, wellness and medical care, tack and equipment, boarding, and therapeutic riding. All enjoyed the day outdoors in the good company of horses and horse people, witnessing firsthand how these gentle creatures give back to the community.

Passionate About the Community CITY MANAGER JACK GRIFFIN LIVES, WORKS, AND PLAYS IN SAN MARCOS by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Alicia Jeanne Photography
F
or Jack Griffin, the job of city manager for San Marcos is a perfect fit. Jack, his wife of 26 years Ginny and their daughter Shay moved to San Diego County in 2000. Jack worked in Chula Vista at the time, but visited San Marcos on several occasions and was impressed by the community as a whole and how the city government functioned. “In 2009, I took the job of city manager for Sebastopol in Sonoma County. We liked Northern California, but we realized after a few years that we would prefer to be back in the San Diego area. I saw in early 2012 that San Marcos was going to be hiring a new city manager and knew that was the job for me,” revealed Jack. As city manager, Jack takes pride in working on and completing projects that improve the community, both in obvious ways and behind-the-scenes. From parks to highly maintained streets and responsive public safety services, Jack is committed to making San Marcos a well-functioning city that residents are proud to call home. “I’m proud of the determination and desire of our city staff to deliver great services to the public. We try to be as customer service-driven as possible,” stated Jack, who added that it is rewarding to meet and exceed the service expectations of San Marcos residents. He and the city staff are excited to continue to guide San Marcos from a “growth” city to a more mature and maintenance-focused city. Throughout Jack’s career, he has served on various volunteer boards and committees and has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to make a difference within the communities he serves. Currently, he is a member of the advisory council for the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club. “San Marcos is blessed by the amazing work the Boys & Girls Club does, and I’m proud to be a supporter,” said Jack. In his spare time, Jack can often be found cheering on Shay as she competes with the Mission Hills High School surf, water polo, and swim teams. He also enjoys working on home improvement projects, and going to concerts and hockey games. “Our family is so happy that professional hockey came back to San Diego. We have season tickets to the Gulls and loved watching their great first season back in town,” related Jack.

n 2014, Perry and Tracy Chavez relocated from Denver to San Diego for a job opportunity. They settled on a home in the San Elijo Hills community of San Marcos and were greeted by an unwelcome visitor. “Our first encounter with a rattlesnake on the porch was interesting,” recalled Perry. “Tracy saw it first and we weren’t sure how to get rid of it. So I collected the snake in a five-gallon bucket, and Tracy called the fire department to dispose of the critter.” Shortly after that experience, the Chavezes spotted two tarantulas near their home. “I call Tracy the spider whisperer,” joked Perry. One would think that their run-ins with wildlife would be enough to scare Perry and Tracy right back to Colorado, but their feelings seemed otherwise. “Our journey to California has been one of the best things we have done in our marriage, as it’s given us an opportunity to explore and grow in ways that we might not have had living in Colorado,” explained the couple, who enjoy San Elijo Hills for its great views and sense of community. Perry – a process maintenance manager at Genentech in Oceanside – and Tracy – a physician’s assistant
at Scripps in Vista – are both Colorado natives and met years ago through mutual friends. “When I first met Tracy, I knew she was the one I was going to marry someday,” shared Perry. “We just celebrated our 25 th wedding anniversary in August!” The couple has three grown daughters – who all live in Colorado – and two grandchildren. “Our oldest granddaughter Jasmin lives with us in San Marcos and attends San Elijo Elementary School,” explained Perry. “She enjoys reading, math, and animals, and is a fantastic runner and one of the greatest grandkids you could have.” In their downtime, the Chavez family enjoys running, cooking, going to the beach, and fixing up their house. They are also self-proclaimed football fanatics. “Tracy and Jasmin are avid Denver Broncos fans, and I am a closet fan who claims to like the Steelers,” shared Perry. “We love football and seeing our team win the Super Bowl was very exciting!” The Chavezes are also big fans of their new San Diego lifestyle. “We have fallen in love with the San Marcos area and not having to shovel piles of snow in the winter,” said Perry. “Our plans are to remain here as transplants.”

:::: YOUR NEIGHBOR’S RECIPE
Ingredients Sauce Ingredients: 1 pound ground beef 4 cloves garlic (minced) 2 15-ounce cans of tomato sauce 2 teaspoons dried basil 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon black pepper Other Ingredients: 1 box of pasta (Karissa prefers bow tie) 1 16 ounces of ricotta cheese 2 eggs 8 ounces of shredded mozzarella
Directions 1. 2.
3. 4.
5.
Put a pan with 8 cups of water on the stove so it can heat up to a boil while you make the sauce (add pasta once water is boiling). In a medium sauce pan, brown ground beef. Add garlic to cooked meat and stir a few times. Add cans of sauce and other seasonings. Bring sauce to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Put burner on low, cover pan, and let sauce simmer. In a bowl mix the ricotta cheese with the 2 eggs. Now it’s time to build the lasagna (pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F). In a 13x9 dish, spread a thin layer of sauce. On top of that, lay out half of the cooked noodles (just spoon them in evenly). On top of the noodles, spread out half of the ricotta mixture and sprinkle on 1/3 of the mozzarella. On top of that, put half of the sauce. Repeat those steps again using the rest of the noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, and sauce. Top it off by sprinkling the top with the rest of the mozzarella, and put the dish in the oven for 35 minutes until golden brown. Note: Sauce could be made ahead of time, or jar sauce could also be used to shorten time. Makes: 6-8 servings Total Time: 2 hours

Over the years my mom has made a few changes to the sauce. I decided to change the noodles so I didn’t burn my fingers using normal lasagna noodles – with bow tie noodles, I can use a spoon. S
an Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) partnered with PFLAG San Diego County to recognize nine LGBTQ students from around San Diego County for their exemplary academic achievements and leadership vision at the 2016 Launching Leaders Scholarship Awards Luncheon in mid-May. Since 1998, PFLAG San Diego County has overseen the awarding of over 80 scholarships in the amount of more than $130,000 to LGBT scholars. The scholarships are awarded to LGBT high school seniors continuing on to higher education, or full-time undergraduate and graduate students, through a competitive application and essay process. The scholarship recipients are individuals who have not only overcome adversity but proactively addressed challenges and barriers. Recipients include: Theodore “Teddy” Bruni (SDSU), Humberto Castorena (Olympian High School), Jacob Garrett (USD), Riley Gibson (Palomar College), Brandon Ishikata (SDSU), Jairo Leon (Cal State San
Marcos/UCLA), Ash Matheson (Canyon Crest Academy), Antonio Mendivil (San Diego City College), and McKenna Roudebush (Rancho Buena Vista High School). This year’s keynote speaker was Fernando Lopez, Director of Operations for San Diego Pride and active advocate for LGBTQ student rights. “For decades community members have been working with and within the school system to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and in the last year policy changes have finally begun to be implemented,” said Fernando. “The work is far from over, but if we remain vigilant and vocal within the next couple of years our region will have a school district where 17,000 faculty have received LGBT cultural competency training, and 130,000 students a year are living and learning in an environment that is not only safe for but supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.” Funders of the scholarships include SDHDF, PFLAG San Diego County, and

THE PERFECT
PICNIC
Think Outside of the Basket with These Unique North County Picnic Spots by RANDI CANTRELL
W
hile the last days of spring linger in the air and the warm breeze of summer approaches, now is the perfect time to enjoy some carefree fun with friends and family in the beautiful outdoors. Whether you enjoy your picnics with a hint of history, want to plan a jam-packed afternoon of activities before taking a break on a blanket in the grass, or simply feel like sitting back with your toes settled in the sand, we've put together a list of a few of the top picnic spots in North County that are sure to help you get into the swing of summer with a unique picnic experience.
LAKE POWAY This spot offers plenty of outdoor recreational activities to make your picnic an all-day event. Rent a row boat, try out your aim on the archery range, or head up the mountain on a hike before enjoying your picnic at Lake Poway. Fishing permits are also available for purchase. Once you're ready for a break, the Lake Poway Concession shop has beverages and snacks available, including duck food to feed the ducks! If you plan to bring your own food and drinks, note that beer and wine are okay, but glass containers are not permitted. Lake Poway's gates open at 6 a.m. and close daily at sunset. 14644 Lake Poway Rd. Poway, CA 92064 858-668-4772 www.poway.org
MOONLIGHT BEACH STATE PARK Moonlight Beach got its name from the fact that local residents used to come to the area for midnight picnics in the early 1900s. With picnic tables available for use, as well as a snack shack, children's play area, tennis and volleyball courts, and of course swimming, surfing, and fishing, Moonlight Beach pairs the amenities of a park with the fun of the beach for the perfect picnic. Fire rings are also available for bonfires after dark – so make it a beach day, then grab your blankets and stick around for s'mores under the stars before heading home. The large parking lot is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the beach is available for use until 2 a.m. Remember that no dogs, portable grills, alcohol, smoking, or glass is allowed. 400 B St. Encinitas, CA 92024 www.ci.encinitas.ca.us
OLD MISSION SAN LUIS REY If history is your thing, pair your picnic with a visit to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, also known as Old Mission San Luis Rey. Stroll the expansive grounds – it's nicknamed the "King of the Missions" for a reason – and marvel at the mission church, which was completed in 1815. A National Historic Landmark, the church is open daily to visitors via the on-site museum. Don't miss California's oldest documented living pepper tree which was originally planted back in 1830. Settle your picnic in the grass of one of the beautiful courtyards, or head over to the nearby Heritage Park Village and snack in the shade of the gazebo. Enjoy the unique historical experience during the week from 9:30 to 5 p.m. or on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A small fee may apply for self-guided tours in the museum. 4050 Mission Ave. Oceanside, CA 92057 760-757-3651 www.sanluisrey.org

:::: COMMUNITY STUFF Get Ready for Red Shoe Day
San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House’s annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser will sweep the county on June 23 with more than 1,500 volunteers standing at roadside intersections in red tutus, bright shirts, and other wacky attire to collect donations to help support this local charity during the morning commute time of 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. The Ronald McDonald House relies heavily on the community to operate its 47 bedrooms, kitchen, and other services for families who have a hospitalized child. A community-driven event, Red Shoe Day is an annual tradition that brings neighborhoods – and even local elected officials like Chris Cate – together to raise money for this local charity. For more information about Red Shoe Day or to find out how you can help visit www.rmhcsd.org.

Richmar Park Groundbreaking
Sometimes billed as “San Parkos” for its many recreational areas, the City of San Marcos is preparing to begin construction on the community’s 35th public park. San Marcos city officials will mark the official start of construction on Richmar Park with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, June 7 at 10 a.m. The ceremony is open to the public and will take place at the park’s site, 110 Richmar Ave. The 1.8-acre park will feature a children’s play area, picnic and social spaces, walking paths, a performance area, and a central shaded gazebo. It is expected to open this fall. “The addition of a second park in the Richmar area represents amazing progress in one of our oldest neighborhoods,” said Community Services Director Buck Martin. “Through our parks and trails system, we are building value in our community and making San Marcos a vibrant recreation destination.” For more information about the new park visit www.san-marcos.net/richmarpark.
Free San Marcos Summer Activities photo by Lauren Nygard Photography
The City of San Marcos is offering a couple of free community programs for the summer. There will be two free concerts at Wood House Gardens in Woodland Park: North County singer-songwriter Cody Lovaas will perform on July 14 and acoustic rock band Headshine will perform on August 11. The Wood House provides a perfect setting for an intimate concert with convenient parking and restroom facilities close to the seating area. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. You may also attend free summer movies in Woodland park. Westside Story will show on July 8 at the Wood House and Inside Out will show on Aug. 5. Movies will be presented on a giant inflatable screen and will start at dusk. Bring beach chairs or blankets for lawn seating. For more information visit www.san-marcos.net.
CPR Classes and Water Safety
North County’s Little Rookies and Allstar Baseball and Softball Academy has been bringing the baseball fundamentals to events around town with their new portable batting cage. The cage debuted at the Ocean Air Elementary School Carnival in April, with a follow-up showing at the Kids Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “What a hit!” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, who runs the Little Rookies program and has been coaching for over 20 years. “The batting cage comes with a pitching machine, balls, bats, a screen for the pitcher, and more.” He also has an 80 by 50-foot soccer arena that comes with 12 soccer balls and drill cones – both sets of equipment set up in 10 minutes anywhere with enough space, and are available for local parties and special events.

With summer right around the corner, the San Marcos Fire Department is reminding residents of the importance of water safety at any age, but especially for children. The San Marcos Fire and Aquatics departments are teaming up for the fourth year in a row to offer poolside CPR training. Because trained professionals are rarely the first to arrive at an incident scene, the Poolside CPR program empowers others to take action and save a life if needed until professional help arrives. Lifeguards and firefighters will demonstrate and guide practice sessions for pool visitors throughout the swim season at the Woodland Park and Las Posas pools. For more information visit www.san-marcos.net. These pools will also be host locations for the seventh attempt at the Guinness World Record for largest swimming lesson ever conducted on June 24. Car buffs will enjoy viewing and talking with the owners of a wide variety of cars including race cars, sports cars, exotic cars, hot rods, classics, top fuel dragsters, and highly modified drag racers. This year, participants can compete for one of three Best of Show trophies that will be awarded each month. This is a free event for both exhibitors and spectators. Cars of all types are welcome. Taste of San Marcos
Charity Wings Art & Craft Center recently celebrated 10 years of creativity and community support with Art Decade*ence, a free, all-ages street festival at The Quad, San Marcos in North City. The festival included plenty of food, entertainment, live art demonstrations, and hands-on art activities. Kainga Music performed, Paul Knebles showcased his skills with live mural art, and Ryan Gray gave ceramic demonstrations, among other stand-outs at the all-day event. The 92078-based nonprofit art center partners with other organizations – including those serving foster families, people with disabilities, veterans, and more – to provide free arts and crafts sessions for self-expression, healing, and pure creative fun. Art Decade*nce partners and sponsors included the North City development, San Marcos Boys & Girls Club, North County Arts Collaborative, Stone Brewing, The Bellows, Urge Gastropub, 1850 Realty, and a wide variety of local artists and musicians. The San Marcos Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for the 4th Annual Taste of San Marcos this summer. The popular event brings together community members at Old California Restaurant Row to enjoy food and beverages from local establishments for a celebration of San Marcos’ unique flavors and flare. Taste of San Marcos was started by Chamber Special Events Chair Margie Fugate. She joined the Chamber’s Board of Directors in 2013 and created the Restaurant Roundtable, a group of dedicated local restauranteurs. The City of San Marcos is home to over 200 licensed restaurants, and Margie realized that a tasting festival would be the perfect opportunity to introduce North County residents to all the delicious possibilities right in their backyard. This year’s date has not yet been determined, but keep an eye out for more information on this exciting community tradition. Learn more at www.sanmarcoschamber.com.

or the last three years, Tyler Garns has been volunteering with Boy Scout Troop 609 based in San Elijo Hills. But Tyler’s scouting days go back to his own childhood when he was a scout himself. Today, Tyler is passing on these same values and responsibilities to his three young sons. “What many people don’t realize is that the Boy Scouts has far less to do with woodcarving and camping and a lot more to do with developing leaders and serviceminded community members,” Tyler shared. “All of the outdoor experiences are designed to get the young men outside of their normal environment so they let their guard down and have opportunities to teach, lead, and grow.” Name: Mission:
Website:
Boy Scouts of America, Troop 609 The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. www.sdicbsa.org
For Tyler, the greatest accomplishment of working with the scouts is to witness the leadership growth in the boys. “Sometimes you wonder if it’s all sinking in, and then you see one of the boys step up in a particular situation and lead the troop through a challenge,” Tyler acknowledged. These “weekly wins” add up over time, and Tyler greatly appreciates the impact of the scouting lessons in the boys’ future successes. Part of Tyler’s service to Troop 609 includes helping with the annual 5k fundraiser race in San Elijo. The money raised supports the cost of the scouts’ summer camp. The race is held in May and growing in popularity; entries doubled this year from last. Tyler shared that volunteers are always needed for the 5k race. Outside of his scouting life, Tyler owns a marketing agency in Carlsbad. Husband and father of four (three sons and a daughter), Tyler and his family enjoy the San Elijo Hills community, the people, and the ocean view. He also appreciates the local trails. “I don’t run or ride as much as I’d like to, but when I get out on the trails, I realize how beautiful our area is,” he said.

Transition Program Students Give Back CLASS GAINS CONFIDENCE BY HELPING LOCAL COMMUNITY
M
ichelle Kocour and Lauren Williams co-teach the San Marcos Unified School District’s Adult Transition Program for students between the ages of 18 and 22 who have moderate to severe disabilities. The program’s mission is to support students in their transition from high school to adult life through classroom and community-based experiences that build on a student’s interests and abilities, including cooking and laundry skills, mobility training, volunteer or work experiences, shopping, money skills, college fitness classes, and recreational activities. While many of the students might not be employed after school or in the future, they enjoy giving back to the community and working on projects to help others. This school year they created cards for veterans and senior citizens, as well as a paper quilt for the San Marcos fire station. The students decided, however, that they wanted to undertake
a larger community service project: to create homemade hygiene bags for those in need. Michelle’s mother made bags for the class to fill with donated hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, deodorant, soap, razors, and even small toys, hair bows, bubbles, and pencils. The assembly process was not always an easy task for the students, but they gained confidence and joy through their successes. In mid-May the class traveled to Interfaith Community Services, a center that provides shelter, food, and other services to the homeless and in-need populations of North County San Diego. The students were thrilled and proud to be able to deliver their bags to those who need them. The experience also offered the opportunity to show the community that people with disabilities do in fact have abilities that are far greater than outward appearances.

Student Award of Excellence
SMHS GRADUATE RECOGNIZED FOR TEAMWORK AND DEDICATION
S
an Marcos High School graduate Angel Gonzalez has been named the recipient of the 2016 CVS Student Award of Excellence. Each year the CVS Health Workforce Initiatives program selects one student from each of the five WorkAbility 1 regions in California to receive the award in recognition of their participation in a work experience opportunity at a CVS Health store. This is the fourth consecutive year that a student from San Marcos Unified School District’s WorkAbility 1 Region V program has won this award. Angel worked at a CVS Health store during the spring semester of his senior year. He received a perfect evaluation at the conclusion of his work experience and the store manager Lou Rugari encouraged him to apply for a permanent position when he graduated. Angel was hired in the fall of 2015 and has worked at the store full-time since then. Lou saw great potential for Angel and began to train him for a supervisory position. When a position became available for Angel at another location, Lou encouraged him to accept the position and make a transfer, which he did. Through California’s WorkAbility 1 program initiative, numerous students throughout the state have started out on a path to a better and more productive adult life. CVS Health is the WorkAbility program’s
largest business partner in San Marcos and provides work experience opportunities for students at all five of their San Marcos stores. Angel credits the WorkAbility program and CVS Health with providing valuable work experience and training and assisting him in gaining confidence and maturity as he learned how to provide excellent customer service and work with his manager, supervisors, and peers.

Girl Scout Silver Award
LOCAL’S PROJECT HELPS SENIOR CITIZENS LEARN TECHNOLOGY
92078
resident Sophia Morrison recently earned her Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award available at the Cadette level, with her Senior Tech Talk project. She is now among the 10 percent of Girl Scouts San Diego Cadettes who reach this milestone. Sophia’s project aims to bridge the generation gap between local senior citizens and High Tech Middle North County School students by creating an opportunity for the students to teach seniors how to use technology, including email, smartphones, texting, and sending and saving photos. Sophia spent over 50 hours researching and planning the project over the past two and a half years. She first interviewed seniors to see where they were lacking in the technology field, then presented her idea to her math and science instructor, Mr. Olivas, at school. He loved the idea so much that
he encouraged her to create a class elective where students would be able to visit the senior center over the course of the semester and teach them about technology. She recruited other students to attend the class and then created the elective by collaborating with her peers and coming up with the curriculum. The class is still ongoing, from which Sophia is receiving great feedback from the senior community. She and her peers are developing insightful relationships and are learning that seniors are wonderful resources and friends. Sophia has been active in Girl Scouts for over eight years and was recently awarded a proclamation from San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond for her Silver Award. She also sits on the San Marcos City Council Youth Commission to help make decisions for the youth in her community. To learn more visit www.sdgirlscouts.org.
